Ms. Gwendolyn T. Brooks (Dated Tuesday, Oct. 27, 1998)

SANFORD -- Ms. Gwendolyn Teresa Brooks, 44, of 1406 Washington Ave. died Monday in Central Carolina Hospital.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Andrews Chapel AME Zion Church in Bunnlevel by the Rev. Charles Chalmers. Burial will be in Lee Memory Gardens. Arrangements are being handled by Horton Funeral Home.

Ms. Brooks is survived by her father and stepmother, the Rev. Freeman and Susan Brooks of Sanford; and three sisters, Deloris B. Lee and Marvinia McCormick, both of Sanford, and evangelist Sandra Brooks of Raleigh.

The family will receive friends at the home.

Ms. Wendy E. Russ (Dated Tuesday, Oct. 27, 1998)

ELIZABETHTOWN -- Ms. Wendy Evette Russ, 28, of 3164 Mercer Mill Road died Saturday in Bladen County Hospital.

The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday in Mount Olive AME Zion Church by the Rev. David Foy. Burial will be in Mount Olive Cemetery.

Ms. Russ is survived by a daughter, Nebria Russ of the home; a son, Teddy Russ of the home; her mother, Fannie Russ of Elizabethtown; two brothers, Roscoe Russ Jr. of Lumberton and Anthony Russ of Dublin; her grandmothers, Loistine Young and Catherine Russ, both of Clarkton; and her grandfathers, Steven Brooks of Elizabethtown and Fletcher Young of Clarkton.

The public will be received today from 1 to 6 p.m. at F.W. Newton & Sons Mortuary.

Derek J. Parker (Dated Tuesday, Oct. 27, 1998)

CLINTON -- Derek J. Parker, 14, of 38 Tarheel Drive died Monday in Sampson Regional Medical Center.

Arrangements will be announced by Brock Memorial & Worley Funeral Home.

Ms. Mary C. Owens (Dated Tuesday, Oct. 27, 1998)

SANFORD -- Ms. Mary Elizabeth Cain Owens, 58, of 1710 Spring Lane died Monday in her home.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Salem United Methodist Church by the Rev. Ray Whitman. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Ms. Owens is survived by two sons, James W. “Jimmy” Owens of Sanford and Jeffery C. Owens of Raleigh; a brother, Earl Cain of Sanford; a sister, Gilda Horne of Fayetteville; and a granddaughter.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Rogers-Pickard Funeral Home.

Ms. Lena B. Oxendine (Dated Tuesday, Oct. 27, 1998)

RAEFORD -- Ms. Lena Bell Oxendine, 73, of 801 Aribia Road died Sunday in her home.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Hoke County Holiness Church by the Rev. Gene T. Chavis. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Ms. Oxendine is survived by four sons, Graham Jones, Jerry Oxendine and Terry Oxendine, all of Raeford, and Larry Oxendine of Red Springs; two daughters, Patsy Cummings of St. Pauls and Sarah Locklear of Raeford; four sisters, Annie Locklear, Iula Lowery and Cinderella McGirt, all of Raeford, and Bernie Chavis of Red Springs; a foster sister, Doris Locklear of Raeford; 23 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Red Springs Funeral Home.

Mrs. Emma McLean (Dated Tuesday, Oct. 27, 1998)

RAEFORD -- Mrs. Emma McLean, 89, of 1816 Cockman Hill Road died Monday in her home.

Arrangements will be announced by Buie Funeral Home.

Antonio A. Gutliffe (Dated Tuesday, Oct. 27, 1998)

RED SPRINGS -- Antonio A. Gutliffe, 66, of 604 W. Fourth Ave. died Sunday in his home.

Arrangements will be announced by L.E. Floyd Funeral Home.

Mrs. Lutie D. Carr (Dated Tuesday, Oct. 27, 1998)

CLINTON -- Mrs. Lutie Daughtry Carr, 92, of Clinton died Sunday in Britthaven of Chapel Hill.

Mrs. Carr was the pianist for Carr Memorial Christian Church.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Carr Memorial Christian Church by Dr. Bob Opperman. Entombment will be in Clinton City Cemetery.

Mrs. Carr is survived by two daughters, Violet C. Penny of Decatur, Ala., and Carol C. Williams of Raleigh; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Crumpler-Honeycutt Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Carr Memorial Christian Church, 91 Carr Church Road, Clinton, N.C. 28328.

Ms. Elizabeth R. Clifton (Dated Tuesday, Oct. 27, 1998)

FAISON -- Ms. Elizabeth Royall Clifton, 86, of 112 N. Faison Ave. died Monday in Classic Country Care of Kinston.

Ms. Clifton was a schoolteacher before retiring.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Faison United Methodist Church by the Rev. Jim Lowe. Burial will be in Faison Cemetery.

Ms. Clifton is survived by a son, William R. Clifton Jr. of Kinston; a daughter, Susan Baker of Kinston; two grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; and six step-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Crumpler-Honeycutt Funeral Home.

Ms. Wixie Yarber (Dated Tuesday, Oct. 27, 1998)

CLINTON -- Ms. Wixie Yarber, 92, of 3823 Mount Moriah Church Road died Sunday in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Clinton.

Ms. Yarber was a member of Sharon Pentecostal Holiness Church and the Women’s Home Demonstration Club.

The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday in Sharon Pentecostal Holiness Church by the Revs. J. Donner Lee, Paul Jackson and Michael Carter. Burial will be in the McArthur family cemetery.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Crumpler-Honeycutt Funeral Home.

Smith M. Cummings (Dated Tuesday, Oct. 27, 1998)

SOUTHERN PINES -- Smith M. Cummings, 69, of Youngs Road died Monday in FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.

Mr. Cummings was a golf course superintendent.

The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday in Manly Presbyterian Church by Dr. William Rolland. Burial will be in Bethesda Cemetery.

Mr. Cummings is survived by his wife, Barbara M. Cummings of Vass; three sons, Donnie M. Cummings of Olivia, James C. Cummings of Knightdale and Glen A. Cummings of Garner; two daughters, Linda P. Smith and Charissa A. Parrish, both of Olivia; a stepson, David P. Button Sr. of Peirson, Fla.; a brother, Charles G. Cummings of Vass; three sisters, Frances Connelly and Mae Miller, both of Vass, and Bessie Brown of Leesburg, Fla.; several grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Boles Funeral Home.

Ransom P. Hall (Dated Tuesday, Oct. 27, 1998)

SOUTHERN PINES -- Ransom P. Hall, 83, of 927 Knollwood Village, formerly of Sanford, died Sunday in FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.

The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Thursday in St. Luke United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Buffalo Cemetery.

Mr. Hall is survived by his wife, Betty F. Hall of Southern Pines; a son, Bradford P. Hall of Canton, Ohio; four stepdaughters, Nancy O. Liner of Alexandria, Va., Sally O. Decker of Dallas, Peggy O. Smith of Columbus, Ohio, and Kim F. Jordan of Cameron; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Rogers-Pickard Funeral Home.

Michael A. Hall (Dated Tuesday, Oct. 27, 1998)

CHARLOTTE -- Michael Anthony Hall, 35, of Charlotte, formerly of Fayetteville, died Saturday.

Mr. Hall was a member of St. Patricks Catholic Church in Fayetteville.

A graveside service will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in Forest Lawn Cemetery by the Rev. Don McConnell. Arrangements are being handled by Almond, Raymer & McConnell Funeral Home of Huntersville.

Mr. Hall is survived by his wife, Angela M. Hall; a daughter, Danielle R. Martin-Hall of Charlotte; two brothers, Vincent Hall of Snowmass, Colo., and Carl Hall of Xenia, Ohio; and three sisters, Mary L. Hansen of Knoxville, Tenn., Veronica Hall of Aspen, Colo., and Marie Shields of Falls Church, Va.

Mrs. Stella M. Perkins (Dated Tuesday, Oct. 27, 1998)

PARKTON -- Mrs. Stella M. Perkins, 79, of Route 1 died Thursday in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in McKoy & Sons Mortuary Chapel in St. Pauls by the Rev. Mark Johnson. Burial will be in Rockfish Memorial Park in Fayetteville.

Mrs. Perkins is survived by a son, Artis Perkins of Parkton; a daughter, Vicky Perkins of Parkton; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8 at the funeral home.

Jeff Johnson (Dated Monday, Oct. 26, 1998)

Jeff Johnson, 75, of 1621 Newark St., Fayetteville, died Saturday in Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

The funeral will be conducted at noon Tuesday in Southend Baptist Church by the Rev. Clarence Patterson. Burial will be in Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery in Spring Lake.

Mr. Johnson is survived by three sons, Lee Johnson of New Jersey and Reginald Johnson and Craig Johnson, both of Fayetteville; five daughters, Helen Hawkins and Catherine Johnson, both of Fayetteville, and Catherline Monase, Gwendolyn Johnson and Muriel Johnson, all of New Jersey; a stepson, Jerome Jones of Fayetteville; several grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

The public will be received today from 1 to 8 p.m. at Wiseman Mortuary.

The family will receive friends at the home of Pauline Jones, 5523 Livingston Drive in Fayetteville.
