LILLINGTON -- Neal Cary Chalmers, 82, of Harnett Manor died Friday.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. today in Williams Chapel Presbyterian Church in Broadway. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Knotts Funeral Home of Sanford.

Mr. Chalmers is survived by his wife, Layton C. Jones of Fayetteville; two daughters, Jeanette Hinton of Fayetteville and Marilyn Moore of New York; two sons, James C. Chalmers of Spring Lake and Curtis R. Jones of Bronx, N.Y.; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Mary Patten (Dated Tuesday, Oct. 13, 1998)

Mrs. Mary Patten, 64, of 1146 Sleepy Hollow Drive, Fayetteville, died Sunday in her home.

Arrangements will be announced by H.M. Colvin Funeral Home.

James H. Turner (Dated Tuesday, Oct. 13, 1998)

CAMERON -- James H. Turner, 55, of Cameron died Saturday in UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.

Arrangements will be announced by Knotts Funeral Home of Sanford.

Mrs. Sachiko Perry (Dated Tuesday, Oct. 13, 1998)

SPRING LAKE -- Mrs. Sachiko Perry, 67, of 1013 Karen Circle died Sunday in her home.

Arrangements will be announced by Rogers and Breece Funeral Home of Fayetteville.

Mrs. Helen L. Richardson (Dated Tuesday, Oct. 13, 1998)

RALIEGH -- Mrs. Helen Louise Richardson, 69, of Raleigh, formerly of Fayetteville, died Saturday.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in First United Pentecostal Church. A graveside service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Thursday in LaFayette Memorial Park in Fayetteville. Arrangements are being handled by Brown-Wynne Funeral Home.

Mrs. Richardson is survived by two sons, Robert A. Richardson of Wendell and David H. Richardson of Colorado Springs, Colo.; two brothers, William Leonard and James Leonard, both of Raleigh; and two grandchildren.

Joseph D. Evans Sr. (Dated Tuesday, Oct. 13, 1998)

SMITHFIELD -- Joseph David Evans Sr., 68, of Smithfield, formerly of Elizabethtown, died Monday.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in First Baptist Church of Smithfield by the Rev. Lee Colbert. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park. Arrangements are being handled by Parrish Funeral Home of Selma.

Mr. Evans is survived by his wife, Sylvia O. Evans; two sons, Joseph D. Evans Jr. of Princeton and Charles B. Evans of Smithfield; two daughters, Melissa A. Evans and Nell-Margaret E. Archer, both of Smithfield; and five grandchildren.

Mrs. Marcella West (Dated Tuesday, Oct. 13, 1998)

CLINTON -- Mrs. Marcella West, 79, of Clinton died Monday.

The family will receive friends at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J.D. Brewington, John Nunnery Road, Stedman.

Arrangements will be announced by Dafford Funeral Home of Dunn.

William ‘Bill’ Lake (Dated Tuesday, Oct. 13, 1998)

CARTHAGE -- Retired Air Force Tech Sgt. William “Bill” Lake, 62, of 872 McCrimmon Road died Sunday in his home.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Union Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Max Gilmore. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mr. Lake is survived by a daughter, Teresa L. Horne of Sanford; two sons, Bobby Lake and Cary Lake, both of Carthage; two brothers, Barry Damitz of Galesburg, Ill., and Larry Damitz of Moline, Ill.; and seven grandchildren.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at Fry-Prickett Funeral Home.

George Watkins (Dated Tuesday, Oct. 13, 1998)

ROCKINGHAM -- George Watkins of 1071-N. U.S. 1 died Monday in Hamlet Hospital in Hamlet.

Arrangements will be announced by McEachern Funeral Home.

Mrs. Pauline Bass (Dated Tuesday, Oct. 13, 1998)

RED SPRINGS -- Mrs. Pauline Bass, 83, of 60 Beck St. died Monday in Southeastern Regional Medical Center in Lumberton.

Mrs. Bass was the owner and operator of Pauline and Pa’s Grill.

The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Crumpler Funeral Home by the Rev. Paul Jones. Burial will be in Alloway Cemetery.

Mrs. Bass is survived by two sisters, Gertrude Littleton of Greenville and Edowise Johnson of Jacksonville, Fla.; and three grandchildren.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Ruth C. Gibson (Dated Tuesday, Oct. 13, 1998)

Mrs. Ruth Clark Gibson, 73, of 3750 Clinton Road, Fayetteville, died Monday in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Cross Creek Cemetery by the Rev. David Taylor.

Mrs. Gibson is survived by her husband, James F. Gibson Sr. of Fayetteville; three sons, James F. Gibson Jr. and Alton “Al” Gibson, both of Fayetteville, and Patrick Gibson of LaFargeville, N.Y.; a sister, Joan C. Faircloth of Fayetteville; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Adalberto Ruiz (Dated Tuesday, Oct. 13, 1998)

Retired Army Sgt. 1st Class Adalberto “Jerry” Ruiz, 73, of Fayetteville died Friday in his home.

Mr. Ruiz was a member of the 187th Rakkasans, the 82nd Airborne Association, the Retired Military Association and the Knights of Columbus.

A mass will be celebrated Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. in St. Patrick’s Catholic Church by Father Ryszard Kolodziej. Burial will be in Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery in Spring Lake.

Mr. Ruiz is survived by his wife, Mary C. Ruiz of the home; a son, James Ruiz of San Bernardino, Calif.; two daughters, Gloria Ruiz of Fayetteville and Carrol Trantanella of Denver; two brothers, Raymond Ruiz of Downey, Calif., and Gilbert Ruiz of Buena Park, Calif.; two sisters, Carmen Medina of Lamirida, Calif., and Josie Espita of Paramount, Calif.; and five grandchildren.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to N.C. Cancer Society.

Oscar C. ‘O.S.’ Williams (Dated Tuesday, Oct. 13, 1998)

DUNN -- Oscar Clifford “O.S.” Williams, 67, of Parrish Nursing Center died Sunday in Good Hope Hospital in Erwin.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. today in Skinner Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. Frank Neville. Burial will be in Veteran’s Memorial Park.

Mr. Williams is survived by two sons, Wayne Williams of Carrollton, Ga., and Ricky Williams of Unadilla, Ga.; a daughter, Vicky Jordon of Virginia Beach, Va.; his mother, Katie B. Johnson of Dunn; three sisters, Lois Neighbor, Willadean Lee and Darlene Altman, all of Dunn; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Avia G. Smith (Dated Tuesday, Oct. 13, 1998)

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. -- Mrs. Avia Gray Smith, 62, of New Rochelle, formerly of Whiteville, N.C., died Thursday.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday in Peoples Funeral Home chapel in Whiteville by the Rev. David Flowers.

Mrs. Smith is survived by five daughters, Shirley Kenyon and Carmella Smith, both of Mount Vernon, Delphine Dean of Washington, D.C., Minnie Tyrell of Stone Mountain, Ga., and Darlene Wells of Baharain; three sons, James Smith and Harold Smith, both of Mount Vernon, and Tommy Smith of Landover, Md.; four brothers, Frank Thompson of Yonkers, George Thompson of Mount Vernon, Clarence Thompson of Raeford, N.C., and David Thompson of Whiteville.

Ms. Catherine Cromartie (Dated Tuesday, Oct. 13, 1998)

CLARKTON -- Ms. Catherine D. Cromartie, 63, of 1764 Vause Road died Friday in Bladen County Hospital.

The funeral will be conducted at noon today in New Hope Baptist Church in Lisbon by the Rev. William McDow. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville.

Ms. Cromartie is survived by a son, Michael Cromartie of Charlottesville, Va.; four sisters, Revie C. Johnson and Ida C. DeCosta, both of Clarkton, Kinnie C. Wilson of New York, Magdalene C. Fitzgerald of Washington, D.C.; and two brothers, Hosea Cromartie of Louisburg and John D. Cromartie of New York.

Willie A. Dowe Jr. (Dated Tuesday, Oct. 13, 1998)

FAIR BLUFF -- Willie A. Dowe Jr., 33, of Swamp Fox Road died Saturday.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in Hickory Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Thomas Nelson. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville.

Mr. Dowe is survived by his parents, Willie and Bertha Dowe of Chadbourn; four sisters, Willa J. Dowe of Fair Bluff, Mae H. Dowe and Martha A. Dowe, both of Chadbourn, and Roxanne Haney of Tabor City; and a brother, Jimmy L. Fairley of Cerro Gordo.

Theodore Swindell (Dated Tuesday, Oct. 13, 1998)

CLARKTON -- Theodore Swindell, 86, of 544 Swindell-Rogers Lane died Saturday in Bladen County Hospital.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Piney Grove AME Zion Church by the Rev. Aaron Moore. Burial will be in Clarkton Community Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville.

Mr. Swindell is survived by a daughter, Phyllis Swindell of the home; a son, Curby Swindell of Charlotte; a stepdaughter, Louise Wilson of Greensboro; and two stepsons, Lafayette Brown and Leslie Brown Jr., both of Durham.

Ms. Lillian Bratcher (Dated Tuesday, Oct. 13, 1998)

RAEFORD -- Ms. Lillian “Sally” Bratcher, 42, of 403 Stevens St. died Sunday in her home.

Arrangements will be announced by Doby’s Funeral Home.

Ronnie L. Chavis (Dated Tuesday, Oct. 13, 1998)

LUMBERTON -- Ronnie Lee Chavis, 55, of 71 Mount Olive Church Road died Sunday in Pemberton Nursing Center.

The funeral will be conducted at 4 p.m. Wednesday in Antioch Baptist Church by the Revs. Jerry McNeill, Starling Chavis and Crafton Chavis. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mr. Chavis is survived by his wife, Rosie S. Chavis of the home; a son, Derrick Chavis of the home; a daughter, Tammy Chavis of Reed Spring, Mo.; his mother and stepfather, Madeline and Moses Chavis of Lumberton; two brothers, Abner “Buddy” Chavis of Lumberton and Michael Chavis of Louisiana; three sisters, Linda L. Brayboy of Virginia, Barbara Mendoza of California and Rita Chavis of Lumberton; and two grandchildren.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Floyd Mortuary and Crematory.

Mrs. Viola A. Nance (Dated Tuesday, Oct. 13, 1998)

LUMBERTON -- Mrs. Viola Atkinson Nance, 80, of 140 Macon St., died Monday in Southeastern Regional Medical Center.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in North Lumberton Baptist Church by the Revs. Mark Phillips and Baxter Leigh. Burial will be in Gardens of Faith Cemetery.

Mrs. Nance is survived by three sons, Tommy Nance of Angier, M.C. Nance and Gene Nance, both of Lumberton; a daughter, Glenda McLean of Leland; two brothers, Clarence Atkinson of Orrum and Jimmy Atkinson of Spring Lake; two sisters, Mae B. Lawson of Lumberton and Annie L. Ballentine of Fayetteville; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Floyd Mortuary and Crematory.
