LUMBER BRIDGE -- Johnny Baldwin, 84, of 6116 Arabia Road died Sunday in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville.
The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Friday in Laurel Hill Baptist Church by the Rev. Douglas Johnson. Burial will be in Laurel Hill Church cemetery.
Mr. Baldwin is survived by his wife, Esther Baldwin of the home; a daughter, Carolyn Baldwin of Lumber Bridge; an adopted daughter, Jenene White of Dayton, Ohio; a foster daughter, Rorene Farmer of Fayetteville; a foster son, Dan Ferguson of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a brother, Jay T. Baldwin of White Plains, N.Y.; two sisters, Lena B. Scrivens and Mable Baldwin, both of Brooklyn; two granddaughters; and nine great-grandchildren.
The public will be received today from 1 to 7 p.m. at Butler Funeral Home in Raeford.
Miss Meta A. Turner (Dated Thursday, Oct. 8, 1998)
COATS -- Miss Meta A. Turner, 90, of Coats died Tuesday in Harnett Manor Nursing Home in Lillington.
Miss Turner was a member of Little Fellowship Primitive Baptist Church and the Coats Senior Center.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. today in Rose & Graham Funeral Home by elders Derle McGee and Raymond Wyatt. Burial will be in Devotional Gardens in Dunn.
Miss Turner is survived by four foster sisters, Willadean Powell, Eloise Lee and Carol McGee, all of Coats, and Margeline Myatt of Willow Spring; and a foster brother, Gayle Pope of Coats.
The family will receive friends at the home of Derle and Carol McGee, 353 Willis Pope Road, Coats.
Mrs. Janet G. Lorenzen (Dated Thursday, Oct. 8, 1998)
RAEFORD -- Mrs. Janet Garner Lorenzen, 51, of 242 Jody Lane died Tuesday in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville.
Mrs. Lorenzen owned and operated Creative Hairstyling Salon.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in Galatia Presbyterian Church by Dr. Gene Miller.
Mrs. Lorenzen is survived by her husband, Jerry Lorenzen; a daughter, Pandora E. Lorenzen of Smithfield; a son, Jerry S. Lorenzen of Fayetteville; her mother, Dotty S. Garner of Vass; two sisters, Delores Kimball of Holden Beach and Sharron Fry of Carthage; and five grandchildren.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Reeves Funeral Home in Hope Mills.

David E. Byrd (Dated Thursday, Oct. 8, 1998)
LUMBERTON -- David Earl Byrd, 93, of 1900 E. Fifth St. died Tuesday in Southeastern Regional Medical Center.
A private service will be held. Arrangements are being handled by Floyd Mortuary & Crematory.
Mr. Byrd is survived by a son, Charles E. Byrd Sr. of Lumberton; two daughters, Ruby L. Grainger and Betty L. Hunt, both of Lumberton; eight grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the home.
Joseph L. Lloyd (Dated Thursday, Oct. 8, 1998)
FAIRMONT -- Joseph Lavelle Lloyd, 72, of Route 2, Box 369-B, died Wednesday in Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Fayetteville.
Mr. Lloyd was a member of First Baptist Church and Pembroke VFW No. 2843. He was an Army veteran.
A graveside service with military honors will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Chadbourn by the Rev. Hilton Deese.
Mr. Lloyd is survived by a brother, H.L. Burchette of Greensboro; three sisters, Kathleen Bullock of Chadbourn, Billie R. Smith of Wilmington and Edith Atkinson of Orrum; three grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Margaret K. Swink (Dated Thursday, Oct. 8, 1998)
Mrs. Margaret Kelly Swink, 86, of Bethesda Health Care Facility, Fayetteville, died Wednesday.
Mrs. Swink was a civil service worker for the Veterans Affairs Medical Center for 38 years before retiring.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in Hay Street United Methodist Church by the Rev. Carl Frazier. Burial will be in LaFayette Memorial Park.
Mrs. Swink is survived by two nieces and a nephew.

SANFORD -- Mrs. Thelma Baker, 84, of Sanford died Tuesday.

Mrs. Baker is survived by a son, Charles Baker of Sanford; a daughter, Faye Abel of Las Vegas; a sister, Maris Williams of Wilson; a brother, Onedell Lamm of Rocky Mount; five grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

SANFORD -- Mrs. Letha Irene McMullen, 86, of 1801 Wicker St. died Tuesday.

Mrs. McMullen is survived by a daughter, Sue Busch of Mequon, Wis.; a son, R. Joseph McMullen of Sanford; four grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

SMITHFIELD -- Thomas Jefferson Coates Jr., 76, of 103 W. Wilson St., formerly of Pinehurst, died Monday in Duke University Medical Center in Durham.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Friday in Pinelawn Memorial Park Mausoleum in Southern Pines by the Rev. Chris Moore-Keish. Arrangements are being handled by Powell Funeral Home.
Mr. Coates is survived by a son, Thomas J. Coates III of New York; and two sisters, Margaret Strickland of Mount Olive and Elizabeth Beaver of High Point.
Mrs. Nellie L. Huggins (Dated Thursday, Oct. 8, 1998)
WHITE OAK -- Mrs. Nellie Louise Huggins, 60, of 99 Devane Lane died Monday in her home.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday in White Oak Church of God of Prophecy by the Revs. Ronald Peeden and Samuel Watkins. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Huggins is survived by two daughters, K. Eloise Hill of White Oak and Deborah Phillips of Tar Heel; two sons, Thomas P. Huggins Jr. and Kenneth R. Huggins, both of White Oak; her mother, Nellie Monroe of White Oak; a sister, Evelyn Simmons of White Oak; three brothers, Roger Devane and Bobby Devane, both of White Oak, and James Devane of Atkinson; and four grandchildren.

Mrs. Judith Ann Whaley, 59, of 1006 Hay St., Fayetteville, died Wednesday in her home.
Mrs. Whaley owned and operated J.A. Whaley Insurance Agency.
The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Friday in Rogers and Breece Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. Sandy Saunders. Burial will be in Fayetteville Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Whaley is survived by her husband, Joseph E. Whaley Sr. of Fayetteville; two sons, Joseph E. Whaley Jr. of Concord and Mark A. Whaley of Fayetteville; her mother, Bernice E. Murphy of Petersburg, W.Va.; two sisters, Jacquetta Owen of Winchester, Va., and Shelby Tombras of Centerville, Va.; a brother, Joseph D. Murphy of Springfield, Va.; and five grandchildren.

ELIZABETHTOWN -- Mrs. Jamie M. Jankovics of Elizabethtown died Wednesday in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville.

William A. Conrad (Dated Thursday, Oct. 8, 1998)
Retired Army Master Sgt. William Alfred Conrad, 72, of 633 York Road, Fayetteville, died Tuesday in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.
Mr. Conrad was retired from Special Forces where he earned two Bronze Stars and a Commendation Certificate from the Republic of Vietnam.
The funeral will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday in JFK Chapel on Fort Bragg by Chaplain Maj. Gerald Bebber. Burial will be in Fairhaven Memorial Park in Santa Ana, Calif. Arrangements are being handled by Rogers and Breece Funeral Home.
Mr. Conrad is survived by his wife, Jean M. Conrad of the home; a daughter, Billie A. Rahimi of Desert Hot Springs, Calif.; two sons, William A. Conrad of Rapid City, S.D., and Steven W. Conrad of Palm Springs, Calif.; a stepson, Bill Cook of Houston; a stepdaughter, Patricia Holt of Valdosta, Ga.; three sisters, Marjorie McCants of Newcomerstown, Ohio, and Betty Dumanski and Charlotte DeHorse, both of Fayetteville; and four grandchildren.

LAURINBURG -- Julian Cousar Parnell, 79, of 815 Sunset Drive died Wednesday in Scotland Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Parnell was a member of First Baptist Church and Rockingham VFW. He retired as the superintendent of Leggett-Platt Paper Manufacturing Plant.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday in First Baptist Church by the Rev. Lawrence Coleman. Burial will be in Hillside Memorial Park.
Mr. Parnell is survived by his wife, Betty S. Parnell of the home; four sons, J.C. “Buster” Parnell Jr. of Salisbury, Charles Parnell of Lexington, Benny Parnell of Reidsville and Michael Parnell of Charlotte; two sisters, Hazel McDaniel of Isle of Palms, S.C., and Helen Boyd of Mangum, Okla.; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
