SOUTHERN PINES -- Mrs. Flo Ethel Jones, 78, of 252 S. Stephens St., formerly of Raeford, died Tuesday in FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in Buie Funeral Home in Raeford by Pastor Willie M. Graham. Burial will be in Silver Grove Community Cemetery in Raeford.

Mrs. Jones is survived by a daughter, Gladys Bronson of Raeford; and five sons, Ernest L. Singletary of Southern Pines, Marion Singletary of Wagram and Robert E. Singletary, Lynwood Singletary and James Singletary, all of Raeford.

The family will receive friends today from 4 to 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Ms. Judith K. Prince (Dated Friday, Nov. 20, 1998)

SOUTHERN PINES -- Ms. Judith Kuhn Prince, 84, of Southern Pines died Wednesday in her home.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in Mount Hope Cemetery by Dr. Grady Perryman. Arrangements are being handled by Powell Funeral Home.

Ms. Prince is survived by a son, John E. Prince of Southern Pines; two daughters, Elizabeth P. Clinton of Southern Pines and Deborah P. Smith of West Townsend, Mass.; a brother, William C. Kuhn of Costa Mesa, Calif.; five grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Memorials may be made to FirstHealth Hospice, P.O. Box 1956, Pinehurst, N.C. 28370.

Mrs. Georgia C. Barber (Dated Friday, Nov. 20, 1998)

CARTHAGE -- Mrs. Georgia Collene Barber, 61, of 4948 Glendon-Carthage Road died Tuesday.

Mrs. Barber worked for Pinehurst Inc.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in Fry-Prickett Funeral Home by the Rev. Kenneth Holt. Burial will be in Cross Hill Cemetery.

Mrs. Barber is survived by her husband, Eugene F. Barber of Carthage; a son, Robert Horton of Marion, Ill.; her mother, Georgia C. Cavins of Carrier Mills, Ill.; two sisters, Juanita Crabb of Carrier Mills and Mary Ewell of Harrisburg, Ill.; two brothers, Jimmy Cavins of Carrier Mills and Charles Cavins of St. Louis; and a grandchild.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at the funeral home.

Herbert L. Smith (Dated Friday, Nov. 20, 1998)

SANFORD -- Herbert Larry Smith, 52, of 1200 Calvary Church Road died Tuesday in Betsy Johnson Memorial Hospital in Dunn.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery in Spring Lake.

Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Gayle L. Smith of Sanford; two sons, Dennie L.T. Smith of Sanford and Bryan L.T. Smith of Abilene, Texas; his mother, Thelma N. Fowler of Roanoke Rapids; his stepmother, Gladis Prange of Sanford; four brothers; three sisters; and five grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Monday from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at Adcock Funeral Home, and at other times at the home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 3109 Poplarwood Court, Suite 125, Raleigh, N.C. 27604-1043.

Miss Martha Jenkins (Dated Friday, Nov. 20, 1998)

DUNN -- Miss Martha Jenkins, 74, of Johnson Better Care Facility died Sunday in Betsy Johnson Memorial Hospital.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in Dafford Funeral Home chapel by Pastor Catherine Brown. Burial will be in Resthaven Cemetery.

Miss Jenkins is survived by a daughter, Nadine C. Blake of Bensalem, Pa.; a son, James C. McLean of Trenton, N.J.; a brother, Thomas Jenkins of Baltimore; a sister, Mary P. Williams of Dillon, S.C.; a grandson; and a great-granddaughter.

The public will be received Saturday from 2 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

The family will receive friends at the home of Wanda G. Massey, 1005 N. Wilson Ave., Dunn.

Ms. Susan H. Autry (Dated Friday, Nov. 20, 1998)

CLINTON -- Ms. Susan Diane Hardison Autry, 43, of 42 Mary Rose Lane died Wednesday in Wayne Memorial Hospital.

Ms. Autry was a machine operator for Fujicone of Clinton.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in Royal-Hall Funeral Home chapel by the Revs. Lutrell Spell and David Welch. Burial will be in Clinton Cemetery.

Ms. Autry is survived by Eddie Bass of Clinton; a son, Paul M. Autry of Turkey; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Rayford D. Hardison of Autryville; a sister, Mary R. Lewis of Hope Mills; and two brothers, Rexford D. Hardison and Rayford G. Hardison, both of Salemburg.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Retha G. McNeill (Dated Friday, Nov. 20, 1998)

Mrs. Retha Gainey McNeill, 80, of 1640 Randolph St., Fayetteville, died Tuesday in Columbia Highsmith-Rainey Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. McNeill was a retired teacher.

The funeral will be conduced at 1 p.m. Saturday in Mount Sinai Baptist Church by Dr. Aaron Johnson. Burial will be in Rockfish Memorial Park. Arrangements are being handled by Paye Funeral Home & Memorial Chapel.

Mrs. McNeill is survived by her husband, Roy McNeill Sr.; three daughters, Mary A. Gay of Glen Allen, Va., Barbara Gillespie of Capitol Heights, Md., and Cheryl Hunt of Atlanta; a son, Roy L. McNeill Jr. of Fayetteville; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Arnette McLean (Dated Friday, Nov. 20, 1998)

PHILADELPHIA -- Mrs. Arnette McLean, 59, of Philadelphia, fomerly of Council, N.C., died Monday in Temple Hospital.

The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday in Piney Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Council by the Rev. Johnnie Drye. Burial will be in Carvers Creek Church cemetery in Council. Arrangements are being handled by Johnson’s Funeral Service of Elizabethtown, N.C.

Mrs. McLean is survived by two sisters, Hester Maultsby and Rosa M. Bowens, both of Council; and a brother, Althania Jones of Wilmington, N.C.

The family will receive friends at the home of Rosa Bowens, 367 Drye Road, Council.

John L. Garner (Dated Thursday, Nov. 19, 1998)

SANFORD -- John Larkin Garner, 14, of 2406 Sheriff Watson Road died Tuesday in his home.

John was a student at West Lee Junior High School.

The funeral will be conducted at 4 p.m. today in Lemon Springs Baptist Church by the Rev. Stephen Burrow. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home.

John is survived by his parents, Richard L. and Vickie S. Garner of Sanford; two sisters, Brittany Garner and Laura Garner, both of Sanford; his paternal grandparents, James L. Garner and Arliss and Nancy O. Upchurch, all of Sanford; and his maternal grandparents, Kenneth and Peggy Simpson of Sanford.

John F. ‘Freddy’ Hayes Sr. (Dated Thursday, Nov. 19, 1998)

McCOLL, S.C. -- John Frederick “Freddy” Hayes Sr., 54, of 301 Roosevelt St. died Tuesday in his home.

Mr. Hayes was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War. He was a former correction officer at the S.C. Department of Correction.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in Boles Funeral Home chapel in Laurinburg, N.C., by the Rev. Billy Gillard. Burial will be in Roger’s Cemetery.

Mr. Hayes is survived by his wife, Nancy I. Hayes of McColl; two sons, John F. Hayes Jr. of Missouri and Bill N. Chestnut of McColl; three daughters, Tammy M. Hayes, Sherrie Hayes and Victoria A. Hayes, all of Kenneth, Mo.; his mother, Margaret D. Skipper of Bennettsville; a brother, Charles Skipper of Virginia; a sister, Frankie D. Dugan of Bennettsville; and five grandchildren.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at the funeral home.

William T. ‘Bill’ Norris (Dated Thursday, Nov. 19, 1998)

William T. “Bill” Norris, 68, of Route 7, Box 166 K-19, Fayetteville, died Wednesday in his home.

Mr. Norris was a veteran of the Korean War.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday in New Hope Church of God by the Rev. Gerald McDowell. Burial will be in Fayetteville Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Norris is survived by two daughters, Becky Norris of Naples, Fla., and Robin Melvin of Fayetteville; two sons, Stephen Norris and William Norris, both of Fayetteville; two sisters, Marjorie Parrish of Fayetteville and Betty R. Nobles of Hope Mills; two brothers, Bobby Norris and Johnny Hill, both of Fayetteville; seven grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Rogers and Breece Funeral Home.

Durham Hammond (Dated Thursday, Nov. 19, 1998)

BLADENBORO -- Durham Hammond, 73, of 306 Grace St. died Tuesday in Columbus County Hospital in Whiteville.

The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Friday in Bethel Emmanuel Holiness Church by the Rev. Jerry Edge. Burial will be in Lewis Cemetery.

Mr. Hammond is survived by a sister, Dosha Hammond of Bladenboro; and two brothers, John L. Hammond and James T. Hammond, both of Bladenboro.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Lewis Funeral Home.

Mrs. Bettie E. Roach (Dated Thursday, Nov. 19, 1998)

ROCKINGHAM -- Mrs. Bettie Doris Easterling Roach, 68, of 169 Stelley’s Tabernacle Church Road died Saturday in Richmond Memorial Hospital.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in Providence Baptist Church by the Revs. J. Vincent Terry and Michael Massey. Burial will be in Northside Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Nelson Funeral Service.

Mrs. Roach is survived by her husband, John H. Roach of the home; four daughters, Betty D. McGrady, Mae C. Roach and Bathsheba Maultsby, all of Rockingham, and Janet M. Roach of Charlotte; and a son, Henry S. Roach of the home.

Ms. Ida M. Ellerbe (Dated Thursday, Nov. 19, 1998)

ROCKINGHAM -- Ms. Ida Mae Ellerbe, 89, of 108 Ida Ellerbe Drive died Monday in Palmer Hinson Care Center.

The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday in Holly Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Carrie Jones. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Nelson Funeral Service of Hamlet.

Mrs. Ellerbe is survived by a brother, Johnnie Ellerbe.

Ralph Smith (Dated Thursday, Nov. 19, 1998)

Retired Army Sgt. Maj. Ralph Smith, 68, of 1134 Landau Drive, Fayetteville, died Monday in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.

Mr. Smith retired from the Army after 32 years. He also retired from the civil service at Fort Bragg.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. today in Fort Bragg Main Post Chapel by the Rev. Sheridan Knight. Burial with military honors will be in Cumberland Memorial Gardens. Arrangements are being handled by Paye Funeral Home & Memorial Chapel.

Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Effie A. Smith of Fayetteville; three daughters, Beverly Stokes of Hampton, Va., Novella Smith of Chesapeake, Va., and Deborah Smith of Hopkinsville, Ky.; a son, Ralph Smith Jr. of Oakland, Calif.; his mother, Eva Reynolds of Tampa, Fla.; and a brother, Dr. Walter Smith of Gainesville, Fla.

Mrs. Carolyn L. Messer (Dated Thursday, Nov. 19, 1998)

LILLINGTON -- Mrs. Carolyn Lee Messer, 53, of Lillington died Wednesday in UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.

Mrs. Messer worked for Morganite of Dunn.

The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Friday in O’Quinn-Peebles Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. Wanda Bayles. Burial will be in Westview Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Messer is survived by her husband, James A. “Ted” Messer; two sons, Stevie Messer of Lillington and Tony Messer of Sanford; eight sisters, Iris Coleman of Bunnlevel, Deloris Hart of Linden, Annette Godfrey of Sunset Beach, Grace Gilbert and Shirley Johnson, both of Angier, and Maxine Blanchard, Brenda Lee and Laverne Stallings, all of Lillington; a brother, Terry Lee of Holden Beach; and three grandsons.

The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 8:30 at the funeral home.
