HAMLET -- Mrs. Annie Fisher McManus, 70, of 401 Carr St. died Saturday in Hamlet Hospital.

Arrangements will be announced by Nelson Funeral Service.

Mrs. Mollie T. Evans (Dated Sunday, Nov. 1, 1998)

FALCON -- Mrs. Mollie Thornton Evans, 87, of Golden Years Nursing Home died Friday.

Mrs. Evans was a member of Culbreth Memorial Pentecostal Church.

The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. today in Culbreth Memorial Pentecostal Church by the Rev. Danny Nelson. Burial will be in Falcon Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Cromartie-Miller & Lee Funeral Home.

Mrs. Evans is survived by a stepson, Carey Evans of Columbia, S.C.; eight stepdaughters, Lessie Edwards and Mary Sharp, both of Florence, S.C., Esther Doby of Asheboro, Jeanette Bailey of Deland, Fla., Mildred Montgomery and Ruth Cahn, both of Greenville, S.C., and Nina Neese and Frances Clyburn, both of Columbia; and a sister, Katie T. Smith of Clinton.

Mrs. Ruth Robinson (Dated Sunday, Nov. 1, 1998)

PHILADELPHIA -- Mrs. Ruth Robinson, 87, of 125 School House Lane, formerly of Turkey, N.C., died Friday in Germantown Hospital.

Arrangements will be announced by Brock Memorial & Worley Funeral Home of Clinton, N.C.

Mrs. Virginia L. Aaron (Dated Sunday, Nov. 1, 1998)

HAMLET -- Mrs. Virginia LeVola Aaron, 74, of 116 W. Ave. died Friday.

The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday in St. Peter United Methodist Church by the Rev. Larry Robinson. Burial will be in Lincoln Memorial Park. Arrangements are being handled by Nelson Funeral Service.

Mrs. Aaron is survived by a sister, Helen A. Mumford of Hamlet; two brothers, Henry A. Aaron of Hamlet and Robert B. Aaron of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and a grandson.

Ms. Hattie Morris (Dated Sunday, Nov. 1, 1998)

RAEFORD -- Ms. Hattie Morris, 84, of Raeford died Friday in FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.

The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Tuesday in Walls Chapel United Methodist Church by the Rev. E. Gates. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Ms. Morris is survived by two sons, John Purcell and Frank Purcell, both of Fort Washington, Md.; three daughters, Beatrice Purcell of Raleigh and Bessie Ray and Blanche Moore, both of Raeford; a brother, George Purcell of Washington, D.C.; and two sisters, Doris Jackson of Washington, D.C., and Sarah Purcell of New York.

The public will be received Monday from 2 to 7:30 p.m. at Jackson Funeral Home.

Harold R. Johnson (Dated Sunday, Nov. 1, 1998)

SANFORD -- Harold Reynolds Johnson, 77, of Sanford died Friday in Central Carolina Hospital.

Mr. Johnson co-owned and operated Sanford Motor Sales for more than 35 years. He was a Naval Air Corp veteran of World War II. He was also a member of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday in St. Luke’s United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Buffalo Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Miller Funeral Home.

Mr. Johnson is survived by his wife, Evelyn B. Johnson of Sanford; two sons, Harold R. Johnson Jr. of Sacramento, Calif., and Robert B. Johnson of Sanford; two daughters, Mary Jo Parks and Joy J. Pearce, both of Sanford; a brother, Paul L. Johnson Jr. of Sanford; and two grandsons.

The family will receive friends at the home.

Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 3109 Poplarwood Court, Suite 125, Raleigh, N.C. 27604, or to the charity of one’s choice.

Harry L. Stewart (Dated Sunday, Nov. 1, 1998)

SEVEN LAKES -- Harry L. Stewart, 78, of 134 Sunset Way died Friday in his home.

Mr. Stewart was a member of West End United Methodist Church.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday in West End United Methodist Church by the Rev. Ron Dietrich. Arrangements are being handled by Boles Funeral Home & Crematory.

Mr. Stewart is survived by his wife, Mildred Stewart of Seven Lakes; a son, Edward H. Stuart of Warwick, N.Y.; a daughter, Susan J. Charity of Goshen, N.Y.; a sister, Frances J. Patterson of Lakewood, Fla.; and two grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to West End United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 276, West End, N.C. 27376.

Clelon H. Benson (Dated Sunday, Nov. 1, 1998)

HIGHLAND, Ind. -- Clelon H. Benson, 70, of Highland, formerly of Benson, N.C., died Thursday.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Rose & Graham Funeral Home chapel in Benson by the Revs. Randy Lucas and Steve Lawson. Entombment will be in Roselawn Cemetery in Benson.

Mr. Benson is survived by his wife, Ruth Benson; two daughters, Rhonda Redar of Schererville and Lynn Rogers of Holbrook; a son, Mark C. Benson of Benson; his mother, Ellen W. Benson; a sister, Margaret Butler of Clinton; a brother, Jesse Benson of Indian Head, Md.; and a grandson.

The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home and at other times at the home of Mark C. Benson, 912 E. Main St. in Benson.

Mrs. Geneva Murphy (Dated Sunday, Nov. 1, 1998)

CLINTON -- Mrs. Geneva Murphy, 73, of 221 W. Boney St. died Saturday in Duplin General Hospital in Kenansville.

Arrangements will be announced by Dafford Funeral Home of Dunn.

Mrs. Irene Williams (Dated Sunday, Nov. 1, 1998)

DUNN -- Mrs. Irene Williams, 71, of 203 N. Wilmington Ave. died Saturday in her home.

Arrangements will be announced by Dafford Funeral Home.

Mrs. Margaret M. Smith (Dated Sunday, Nov. 1, 1998)

LILLINGTON -- Mrs. Margaret McNeill Smith, 83, of 325 Norrington Road died Friday in her home.

Arrangements will be announced by Dafford Funeral Home.

John H. Martin (Dated Sunday, Nov. 1, 1998)

ELIZABETHTOWN -- John Howard Martin, 76, of 1210 McLean St. died Thursday in Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Fayetteville.

The funeral will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. today in Mount Olive AME Zion Church by the Rev. David Foy. Burial will be in Mount Olive Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by F.W. Newton & Sons Mortuary.

Mr. Martin is survived by a sister, Martha J. Lewis of Bladenboro; a brother, Thomas Martin Jr. of Washington, D.C.; four stepsisters, Shirley Carter, Jackie Smith, Deloris Smith and Gloria McGill, all of Elizabethtown; and three stepbrothers, Johnny McKoy, Clyde McKoy and Kenneth McKoy, all of Elizabethtown.

Mrs. Lillian H. Elkins (Dated Sunday, Nov. 1, 1998)

CLARKTON -- Mrs. Lillian Hayes Elkins, 83, of Clarkton died Friday in Rex Hospital in Raleigh.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in Clarkton Cemetery.

Mrs. Elkins is survived by a daughter, Diane E. Lambeth of Raleigh; three sons, R. Edison Elkins Jr. of Washington, D.C., H. Roy Elkins of Clarkton and Thomas W. Elkins of Raleigh; a sister, Willette Gooding of Elizabethtown; and four grandchildren.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Kinlaw Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to White Plains Presbyterian Church.

Mrs. Cleo S. Bethea (Dated Sunday, Nov. 1, 1998)

LAKE WACCAMAW -- Mrs. Cleo Stephens Bethea, 85, of Premier Living Nursing Home died Tuesday.

Mrs. Bethea was a member of Butler Branch Baptist Church.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in McCormick’s Chapel AME Church in Lumberton by the Revs. A.R. Jenkins and T. Campbell. Burial will be in Alligator Cemetery in Marietta.

Mrs. Bethea is survived by a daughter, Irish W. Broughton of New York; two sisters, Geneva Powers of Lumberton and Josephine Varner of Newport News, Va.; three grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 8 p.m. at Maultsby & Sons Funeral Home in Lumberton.

Memorials may be made to McCormick’s Chapel AME Church, Lumberton, N.C.

Marshall Covington (Dated Sunday, Nov. 1, 1998)

LAUREL HILL -- Marshall Covington, 50, of 9100 Peele’s Chapel Road died Thursday in Scotland Memorial Hospital in Laurinburg.

The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Tuesday in Beautiful Zion Baptist Church by the Rev. Glenn Bright. Burial will be in Robinson Chapel cemetery. Arrangments are being handled by Morris Funeral Home.

Mr. Covington is survived by his mother, Geneva Breeden of the home; four sisters, Lela M. Hursey of Mount Vernon, N.Y., Dannie Wilson of Laurel Hill, Linda G. Hursey of Newport News, Va., and Vanessa C. Norton of Dyess Air Force Base, Texas; and a brother, Henry Spencer of the home.

The family will receive friends at the home.

Ronnie R. Fisher (Dated Sunday, Nov. 1, 1998)

ERWIN -- Ronnie Robert Fisher, 86, of 306 Butch St. died Saturday in Good Hope Hospital.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in Butler Funeral Home by the Rev. Thomas Rupp. Burial will be in Brock Cemetery.

Mr. Fisher is survived by six daughters, Delora E. Ennis of Erwin, Minnie P. Honeycutt of Dunn, Lonnie Hales of Roseboro, Clara Nichols and Doris C. Jackson, both of Jacksonville, and Nellie M. Bass of Wilmington; a son, Charlie R. Fisher of Roseboro; a brother, Arby Fisher of Autryville; 23 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Diane McKenzie (Dated Sunday, Nov. 1, 1998)

STEDMAN -- Mrs. Diane McKenzie, 55, of 214 Carol St. died Friday in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville.

Mrs. McKenzie retired from Carolina Telephone. She was a member of Stedman Baptist Church.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday in Stedman Baptist Church by the Revs. Phil Spears, Virgil Wilson and Bob Phipps. Burial will be in Macedonia Baptist Church cemetery.

Mrs. McKenzie is survived by her husband, Edwin McKenzie of Stedman; a daughter, Deborah Mitchell of Fayetteville; a son, Bryan McKenzie of Fayetteville; two sisters, Dorcas Brock of Fayetteville and Shirly Matthews of Piedmont, S.C.; and five grandchildren.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home in Fayetteville and at other times at the home of Deborah Mitchell, 3422 Sunnyview Lane in Fayetteville.

Ms. Mae N. Johnson (Dated Sunday, Nov. 1, 1998)

CLINTON -- Ms. Mae N. Johnson, 45, of 310-B Lane St. died Thursday in UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.

Arrangements will be announced by Robinson Funeral Home.

Herbert W. Ballance (Dated Sunday, Nov. 1, 1998)

CLINTON -- Herbert Wesley “Hub” Ballance, 67, of 5233 Taylors Bridge Highway died Saturday in Sampson Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Ballance was a member of Mount Gilead Baptist Church. He was a retired school bus mechanic.

The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Monday in Mount Gilead Baptist Church by the Revs. Oliver Skerrett and Fulton Thomas. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mr. Ballance is survived by his wife, Helen C. Ballance; two daughters, Rebecca Ballance of Fayetteville and Jennifer B. Edge of Clinton; four sons, Jimmy Ballance, Hardy Ballance and Rodney Ballance, all of Clinton, and Douglas Ballance of Roseboro; and six grandchildren.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Royal-Hall Funeral Home.
