ST. PAULS -- Enoch Council Jr., 83, of St. Pauls died Thursday in Southeastern Regional Medical Center in Lumberton.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in First New Light Baptist Church in White Oak by the Rev. Calvin Brewington. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mr. Council is survived by five daughters, Mable Carver and Carrie Whitted, both of Tar Heel, Estella Council and Ophelia Thompson, both of Bronx, N.Y., and Marzella Guions of St. Pauls; a son, Albert Council of Manhattan, N.Y.; his stepmother and stepfather, Louise and Donald Phillips of Fayetteville; two brothers, Vander Washington and Rogers Council, both of Lumberton; 20 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

The public will be received today from 1 to 7 p.m. at Wiseman Mortuary in Fayetteville.

The family will receive friends at the home.

Joseph M. Williams

ANGIER -- Joseph M. Williams, 90, of Angier died Thursday.

The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. today in Kennebec Baptist Church. Burial will be in Lakeside Memorial Gardens. Arrangements are being handled by Overby-Johnson Funeral Home.

Mr. Williams is survived by nine daughters, Judy Wilkins, Janet Smith, Estelle Baker, Dot Wood, Pearl Grady, Kramer Sullivan, Gloria McLamb and Becky Currin, all of Angier, and Brenda Stephenson of Four Oaks; three sons, J.M. Williams, Junior Williams and Johnny Fortin, all of Angier; three brothers, John Williams of Angier and Mack Williams and Add Williams, both of Fayetteville; 25 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Mr. Cummings is survived by his parents, Harvey B. and Viola B. Cummings of the home; three sisters, Valorie Hardin, Carol S. Cintron and Cynthia Thomas, all of Lumberton; and two brothers, James E. Cummings of Lumberton and Willie Cummings of Philadelphia.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Biggs Funeral Home.

Mrs. Lucy D. Burney

CLARKTON -- Mrs. Lucy Daniel Burney, 92, of Clarkton died Friday.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday in White Plains Presbyterian Church by the Rev. James D. Bartlett. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Burney is survived by two daughters, Jeanette B. Bridgers and Carolyn B. Clark, both of Clarkton; five sons, Gethro Burney and Fred Burney, both of Clarkton, Earl Burney of Kelly, Leon Burney of Greenville and Charles Burney of Leland; 16 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Kinlaw Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to White Plains Presbyterian Church.

Mrs. Eva R. Garner

Mrs. Eva Riley Garner, 85, of 5911 Fisher Road, Fayetteville, died Friday in Fayetteville Health Care Facility.

Mrs. Garner retired from the Cumberland County school system. She was a member of Cumberland United Methodist Church.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in Cumberland United Methodist Church by the Rev. Hope Vickers. Burial will be in Cumberland Cemetery.

Mrs. Garner is survived by her stepmother, Margaret Riley of Fredericksburg, Va.; a brother, James R. Riley of Fayetteville; a sister, Dorothy Cain of Cumberland; and two stepsisters, Linda Hargis of Fayetteville and Kay Page of Fredericksburg.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Hamilton-Porter Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Courtney I. Caldwell

CAMERON -- Retired Air Force Master Sgt. Courtney Ian Caldwell, 63, of 1477 N.C. 24/87 died Thursday in his home.

Mr. Caldwell was a veteran of the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He was a member of Center Baptist Temple Church in Sanford.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday in Adcock Funeral Home chapel in Spring Lake by the Rev. Mike Oldham. Burial will be in Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery in Spring Lake.

Mr. Caldwell is survived by his wife, Sherbyteen Caldwell of Cameron; a son, Christopher Caldwell of Concord; three stepsons, George K. Shavers of Alaska, Ricky L. Shavers of Raleigh and Robert E. Shavers of Oklahoma; his mother and stepfather, Vivian and Bill Urvan of Paris, Texas; two sisters, Hope Waller and Sonja Buchanan, both of Sherman, Texas; two grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 the funeral home.

Emmett Steele III

EAST ORANGE, N.J. -- Emmett Steele III, 45, of East Orange, formerly of Raeford, N.C., died Mar. 26 in Orange Memorial Hospital.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Monday in Mount Olive Church of God in Fayetteville, N.C., by Bishop Booker T. Whitted. Arrangements are being handled by Buie Funeral Home.

Mr. Steele is survived by a daughter, Aisha-Zakia Steele of East Orange; a foster daughter, Da’nah Steele of East Orange; his parents, Emmett and Priscilla Steele of Raeford; a brother, Anthony Steele of East Orange; and a sister, Veronica Steele of East Orange.

Charlie C. Scearce Jr.
(Dated Sunday, April 4, 1999)
Retired Army Command Sgt. Maj. Charlie Carter Scearce Jr., 61, of 5121 Pala Verde Drive, Fayetteville, died Wednesday in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.

Mr. Scearce was a veteran of the Vietnam War. During his military career he was awarded the Bronze Star, the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry and the Combat Infantryman Badge.

A graveside service with military honors and Masonic rites will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery in Spring Lake by Chaplain Steve Cantrell.

Mr. Scearce is survived by his wife, Betty C. Scearce of the home; a son, Charlie C. Scearce III of Holden Beach; a daughter, Catherine S. Pace of Leavenworth, Kan.; and four grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Disabled American Veterans Fund, Chapter No. 46, 520 Johnson St., Fayetteville, N.C. 28303.

Mrs. Douglas is survived by six daughters, Sadie M. Thompson of the home, Hattie Williams, Sallie Sinclair Ora M. Sealey and Margaret Smith, all of Lumberton, and Janice Douglas of Spring Lake; three sons, Nathaniel Douglas of Hamlet and Evander Douglas and Alfred Douglas, both of Lumberton; three sisters, Margie Hall of Denver, Juilia McDonald of Spring Lake and Lillie McNair of Philadelphia; 42 grandchildren; 60 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
