PINEHURST -- David Michael Freeman, 52, of Pinehurst died Wednesday in his home.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday in Powell Funeral Home chapel in Southern Pines by the Rev. Rick Wilkie. Burial will be in Pinelawn Memorial Park.

Mr. Freeman is survived by his wife, Debra L. Freeman; two daughters, Heather Freeman of Charlotte and Jennifer Freeman of Pinehurst; his mother, Mary E. Freeman of Pinehurst; a sister, Jane F. Bunch of High Point; and a brother, Basil J. Freeman Jr. of Las Vegas.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 434 Fayetteville Street Mall, 2 Hanover Square, Suite 1600, Raleigh, N.C. 27601; or to the charity of one’s choice.

Delois M. Dwyer

ERWIN -- Mrs. Delois McNeill Dwyer, 58, of 5429 Titan Roberts Road died Tuesday in Wake Medical Center in Raleigh.

The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Sunday in Oak Grove AME Zion Church by the Rev. A.L. Ferguson. Burial will be in Riverside Community Cemetery.

Mrs. Dwyer is survived by a son, Shelby McNeill of Fort Dix, N.J.; three daughters, Sharon Dwyer of Kearney, N.J., Pamela M. Grant of Queens, N.Y., and Marcia Dwyer of the home; her mother, Ella McNeill of Erwin; a sister, Pearl Grady of Bronx, N.Y.; and four grandchildren.

The public will be received today from 2 to 7 p.m. at Dafford Funeral Home in Dunn.

Theodor A. Berghahn

WHISPERING PINES -- Retired Army Capt. Theodor A. Berghahn, 60, of Whispering Pines died Thursday in his home.

Mr. Berghahn was a certified financial planner.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in Boles Funeral Home chapel in Pinehurst.

Mr. Berghahn is survived by his wife, Catherine Berghahn; two sons, Theodor Berghahn Jr. of Shelbourne, Vt., and Craig Berghahn of Thornwood, N.Y.; a daughter, Donna Berghahn of Poughkeepsie, N.Y.; two brothers, Walter Berghahn of Scotch Plains, N.J., and Robert Berghahn of Milbrook, N.Y.; and two grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1-800-ACS-2345.

CLINTON -- Paul Beard Sr., 76, of 704 Byrd Yancey Bass Road died Tuesday in Mary Gran Nursing Center.

Mr. Beard is survived by his wife, Mary Beard of the home; four sons, Paul Beard Jr. of Linden, Edward Beard of Fayetteville and David Beard and Willie M. Beard, both of Clinton; two daughters, Lola M. Faison of Goldsboro and Christie Best of Clinton; four sisters, Louella Peterson and Rose M. Pierce, both of Clinton, Lola Vann of Ingold and Margaret Vann of Washington, D.C.; a brother, Arthur Beard of Clinton; eight grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

The public will be received today from noon to 6 p.m. at Brock Memorial & Worley Funeral Home.

Mrs. Douglas Everett Yarboro, 73, of 3543 Rolls Ave., Fayetteville, died Saturday in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.

Mrs. Yarboro is survived by two sons, Dr. C. Henri Yarboro III of Cleveland and Dr. Timothy E. Yarboro of Herndon, Va.; two daughters, Helen B. Whitley of Stamford, Conn., and Martha Y. Coates of St. Paul, Minn.; two brothers, John D. Jackson of Tacoma, Wash., and Harold O. Jackson of Stamford; four sisters, Dorothy V. Jackson, Niza J. Cureton and Miriam Bowden, all of Fayetteville, and Josie M. Cohen of Miami; and 10 grandchildren.

The public will be received today from 1 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

The family will receive friends at the home of Dorothy Jackson, 216 Temple Ave., Fayetteville.

Mrs. Ransome was a member of Church of God.

The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Thursday in Saint Pauls Funeral Home Wallace Chapel by the Rev. Floyd Helms. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Cemetery.

Mrs. Ransome is survived by two sons, Robert Ransome and James Ransome, both of St. Pauls; a daughter, Willie Mae R. Owens of St. Pauls; a sister, Sarah Pridgen of Marion, S.C.; two stepsisters, Iona Phipps and Christine David, both of St. Pauls; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at the funeral home and at other times at the home.

LUMBERTON -- Ms. Julia Duncan Pittman, 73, of 802 E. Ninth St. died Monday in Southeastern Regional Medical Center.

Ms. Pittman is survived by six sons, Richard K. Pittman, Earnest J. Pittman, David Z. Pittman, Danny S. Pittman, Henry P. Pittman and William A. Pittman, all of Lumberton; a half brother, J.T. Phillips of Lumberton; a stepbrother, Wilton Phillips of Wilmington; a stepsister, Velma Helgren of Lumberton; 23 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.

MARSTON -- Ms. Virginia McRae Newton, 80, of 25040 Newton Road died Monday in her home.

Newton of Elizabethtown, Chester P. Newton of Atlanta, Leo F. Newton of Newark, N.J., Oscar A. Newton of Greensboro, Herbert L. Newton of Augusta, Ga., and Theodore R. Newton of Morganton; a sister, Phronia L. Garner of Spartanburg, S.C.; a brother, Nathaniel McRae of Charlotte; 27 grandchildren; and eight grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 6 to 7 p.m. at Jackson Funeral Home in Laurinburg.

SANFORD -- Mrs. Mildred Mabe Merritt, 82, of 2234 Cool Springs Road died Monday.

Mrs. Merritt was a member of First Baptist Church. She was a dietitian at Lee County Hospital before retiring.

The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. today in First Baptist Church chapel by the Revs. Eric Porterfield and D.E. Parkerson. Burial will be in Lee Memory Gardens. Arrangements are being handled by Rogers-Pickard Funeral Home.

Mrs. Merritt is survived by her husband, Ralph C. Merritt of Sanford; a daughter, Kay S. Heckman of Sanford; a son, Danny Merritt of Dobson; two sisters, Mary Jane Mabe of Greensboro and Boyd Mabe of Hunstville, Ala.; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends today from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the church.

WHITEVILLE -- Mrs. Evelyn Inez Nobles Long, 86, of Burkhead Street died Monday in Century Care.

The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Thursday in Worthington Funeral Home by the Rev. Cecil Hammond. Burial will be in Ward’s Station Church of God cemetery.

Mrs. Long is survived by a son, Nathan Long of Chadbourn; five daughters, Evelyn Ward of Tabor City, Velma Spruill of Edenton, Doris Strickland and Brenda Hilbourn, both of Cerro Gordo, and Deborah Etheridge of Whiteville; her stepmother, Dorothy Nobles of Chadbourn; two sisters, Maybell Batten and Annabelle Soles, both of Chadborn; four stepbrothers, Joe Nobles and Murray Nobles, both of Thomasville, and Wade Nobles and Emory Nobles, both of Chadbourn; two half sisters, Eloise Williams and Lucy Penny, both of Chadbourn; 18 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at the funeral home.

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. -- Mrs. Celestia Jewel Waller Leigh, 74, of 300 Chalmers Drive died Monday in Halifax Regional Hospital.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in Halifax Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Robert I. Heim. Arrangements are being handled by Powell Funeral Home.

Among Mrs. Leigh’s survivors is a daughter, Elizabeth A. Richardson of Fayetteville, N.C.
