Ms. Gwendolyn Sampson (Dated Saturday, July 3, 1999)

GLENDALE, Calif. -- Ms. Gwendolyn Femi Sampson, 48, of Glendale, formerly of Fayetteville, N.C., died Monday in Glendale Memorial Seventh Day Adventist Hospital.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in Abney Chapel Seventh Day Adventist Church in Fayetteville by the Rev. Anthony Medley. Burial will be in the Murphy’s family cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Paye Funeral Home & Memorial Chapel of Fayetteville.

Ms. Sampson is survived by a daughter, Sabah L. Sampson of Lakeport; her parents, George H. and Mary T. Sampson of Lakeport; six brothers, George H. Sampson Jr. of Columbia, Md., James C. Sampson of Walnut, Dr. Reginald Sampson of Whittier, Dr. Alan D. Sampson of Kelseyville, Dr. Carlton B. Sampson of Downey and Michael D. Sampson of Highland; and five sisters, Paula K. Brown of Nashville, Tenn., Dr. H. Vernetta Johnson of Lakeport, Arlene L. Johnson of Hendersonville, Tenn., Devora R. Winkfield of Silver Springs, Md., and Sonya M. Sampson of Los Angeles.

The family will receive friends at the home of Mildred McSwain, 2324 Regan St., Fayetteville.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Needy-Worthy Students Fund, Oakwood College, Huntsville, Ala., care of Mildred McSwain, 2324 Regan St., Fayetteville, N.C. 28301.

Mrs. Teresa Hemingway (Dated Saturday, July 3, 1999)

HOMESTEAD, Fla. -- Mrs. Teresa Denise Langston Hemingway, 30, of 15485 S.W. 288th St., formerly of Dunn, N.C., died June 22.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in Spring Hill Free Will Baptist Church in Godwin, N.C., by elder W.H. Currie. Burial will be in Resthaven Cemetery in Dunn.

Mrs. Hemingway is survived by two sons, Detwoine Langston and Derrick Liles Jr., both of Coats, N.C.; a daughter, April S. Liles of Coats; her parents, Charles ‘‘Billy’’ and Connie Langston of Dunn; four sisters, Angeline Smith, Toni Frye and Felicia Langston, all of Columbus, Ga., and Cynthia Davis of Miami; and three brothers, Charles Langston Jr. and Antonio Langston, both of Dunn, and Charles Covington of Eastover, N.C.

The public will be received today from 2 to 8 p.m. at Dafford Funeral Home in Dunn.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8 at the funeral home and at other times at the home of Billy and Connie Langston, 1009 N. King Ave., Dunn.

Mrs. Lena M. Suggs (Dated Saturday, July 3, 1999)

WHITE OAK -- Mrs. Lena McMillian Suggs, 86, of 9953 N.C. 53 West died Friday in Bladen County Hospital in Elizabethtown.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in White Oak Baptist Church by the Rev. Scott Lewis. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Suggs is survived by five daughters, Ruth Owen of Port St. Lucie, Fla., Marilyn Heath, Margaret Melvin and Joan Hulon, all of Fayetteville, and Carol Adkins of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; two sons, Dewey L. Suggs of Raeford and David H. Suggs of Fayetteville; a sister, Flora Sholar of Elizabethtown; four brothers, Austin McMillian and Harry McMillian, both of Fayetteville, and M.G. McMillian and Paul McMillian, both of Elizabethtown; 12 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Butler Funeral Home.

Mrs. Clara W. Butts (Dated Saturday, July 3, 1999)

SMITHFIELD -- Mrs. Clara Wiggins Butts, 95, of Smithfield died Friday in Britthaven of Smithfield.

Mrs. Butts was a member of Providence Presbyterian Church. She was a homemaker.

A graveside service will be conducted at 4 p.m. today in Providence Presbyterian Church in Angier by the Rev. Mark Scott.

Mrs. Butts is survived by a half brother, David Wiggins of Trenton; and two half sisters, Eliza Eubanks of Kinston and Thelma Lafferty of Rocky Mount.

The family will receive friends today from 2 to 3 p.m. at Rose & Graham Funeral Home in Benson.

Jared M. Wright (Dated Saturday, July 3, 1999)

WHITE OAK -- Jared Michael Wright, 20, of White Oak died Thursday in Duke University Medical Center in Durham.

The funeral will be conducted at 4 p.m. Sunday in White Oak Baptist Church by the Rev. Scott Lewis. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Kinlaw Funeral Home.

Mr. Wright is survived by his parents, Gary and Beverly Wright of White Oak, three sisters, Beth A. Myers of Katonah, N.Y., and Andrea J. Wright and Amanda L. Wright, both of White Oak; and two brothers, Gary Wright Jr. of Spartanburg, S.C., and Timothy A. Wright of West Haven, Conn.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at the church.

Mrs. Anna M. Smith (Dated Saturday, July 3, 1999)

BALTIMORE -- Mrs. Anna Monds Smith, 74, of Baltimore, formerly of Dunn, N.C., died Tuesday.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday in Resthaven Cemetery in Dunn by the Rev. Marvin Lee.

Mrs. Smith is survived by her husband, James V. ‘‘Bro’’ Smith of Baltimore; five daughters, Jeanette H. Wallace, Vernell Revell, Jamie McKoy, Celeste Smith and Lillian Edwards, all of Baltimore; two sons, William A. Smith and James H. Smith, both of Baltimore; two brothers, William McKinley of Detroit and David Monds of Dunn; two sisters, Nellie Brown of Florida and Lula Brockington of Lumberton, N.C.; 20 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

The public will be received Sunday from 2 to 8 p.m. at Dafford Funeral Home in Dunn.

Ms. Joycie A. Oxendine (Dated Saturday, July 3, 1999)

HIGH POINT -- Ms. Joycie Ann Oxendine, 27, of 618 South Road, formerly of Fairmont, died Thursday in her home.

Ms. Oxendine was a member of Pentecostal Holiness Church.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in Floyd Funeral Services chapel in Fairmont by the Rev. James Hunt. Burial will be in Family Cemetery in Pembroke.

Ms. Oxendine is survived by her parents, Mary L. and Larry Oxendine of the home; and four sisters, Norma Grand of Pembroke, Elizabeth Tyler and Shelia Oxendine, both of High Point, and Tina Locklear of Lumberton.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at the funeral home.

James R. Connor (Dated Saturday, July 3, 1999)

CERRO GORDO -- James Riley Connor, 54, of Cerro Gordo died Friday in Columbus County Hospital in Whiteville.

The funeral will be conducted at 4 p.m. Sunday in Worthington Funeral Home by the Rev. Tim Moore. Burial will be in Chadbourn Memorial Cemetery.

Mr. Connor is survived by Martha Burnette of the home; two daughters, Amy Canady and Angela Connor, both of Cerro Gordo; four brothers, Grady Connor of Whiteville, Zon Connor of Chadbourn and Dan Connor and Tim Connor, both of Cerro Gordo; two sisters, Mervine King of Chadbourn and Patricia Williamson of Evergreen; and a grandchild.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at the funeral home.

J. Howard Patterson (Dated Saturday, July 3, 1999)

BROADWAY -- J. Howard Patterson, 69, of Broadway died Thursday in his home.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. today in Holly Springs Baptist Church by the Revs. Leary Knight and Jerry Parson. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by O’Quinn-Peebles Funeral Home of Lillington.

Mr. Patterson is survived by his wife, Lois H. Patterson of the home; three sons, Jeffrey Patterson of Sanford and Mickey Patterson and Scott Patterson, both of Broadway; two brothers, David Patterson of Sanford and Ronald Patterson of Mamers; and eight grandchildren.

Dougle L. Davis (Dated Saturday, July 3, 1999)

CLARKTON -- Dougle Lee Davis, 81, of 2463 Burney Ford Road died Wednesday in Bladen County Hospital in Elizabethtown.

The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday in Savannah Temple AME Zion Church by the Rev. Thomas Baldwin. Burial will be in McCall Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Carter Funeral Home.

Mr. Davis is survived by his wife, Clauddia P. Davis; a stepdaughter, Francis Harvey of Wilmington; and a sister, Leola Grant of Lumberton.

Jack F. Cardwell (Dated Tuesday, July 6, 1999)

ROCKINGHAM -- Jack Flippen Cardwell, former commander of the North Carolina Highway Patrol, died Wednesday in Horton Medical Center in Middletown, N.Y. He was 70.

Mr. Cardwell, of 219 Greenlake Road, was an Army veteran of World War II. He joined the Highway Patrol in 1951 and held all ranks from trooper to colonel before being appointed commander of the Highway Patrol by Gov. Jim Martin in 1985. He retired at that rank in 1989. Mr. Cardwell was a member of Green Lake United Methodist Church.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Sierra Christian Center by the Rev. Eric Joyce. Burial will be in Green Lake United Methodist Church cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Watson-King Funeral Home.

Mr. Cardwell is survived by his wife, Essie D. Cardwell of the home; two sons, Jack F. Cardwell Jr. of Raleigh and Robert P. Cardwell of Carthage; three sisters, June Cardwell and Janie Kinney, both of Ellerbe, and Jeanette Pratt of Burleson, Texas; and a grandson.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Sierra Christian Center.

Memorials may be made to Greenlake United Methodist Church memorial fund, 1329 Roberdel Road, Rockingham, N.C. 28379.

Mrs. Annie L. Gilmore (Dated Tuesday, July 6, 1999)

ST. PAULS -- Mrs. Annie L. Gilmore, 82, of 649 N. Alford Road died Saturday in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville.

Arrangements will be announced by McKoy & Sons Mortuary.

Willie W. Williams (Dated Tuesday, July 6, 1999)

MARSTON -- Willie Wadus Williams of 16202 Zion Road died Monday in Autumn Care of Raeford.

Arrangements will be announced by Morris Funeral Home.

Hardy R. Royal (Dated Tuesday, July 6, 1999)

CLINTON -- Hardy Rassie Royal, 81, of 51 Red Oak Lane died Monday in his home.

Mr. Royal was a farmer before retiring.

The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday in Crumpler-Honeycutt Funeral Home by the Rev. Jimmy Swinson. Burial will be in Grandview Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Royal is survived by his wife, Audrey M. Royal of Clinton; two sons, James ‘‘Jimmy’’ Royal and Edward C. Royal, both of Clinton; two sisters, Ruby Pope and Hazel Bradshaw, both of Clinton; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at the funeral home.

Silas Williams Jr. (Dated Tuesday, July 6, 1999)

SANFORD -- Silas ‘‘Tency’’ Williams Jr., 73, of 645 Center Grove Church Road died Monday in his home.

Arrangements will be announced by Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home.

Ms. Loretta J. Rosenberg (Dated Tuesday, July 6, 1999)

SANFORD -- Ms. Loretta J. Rosenberg of Sanford died Monday in Parkview Retirement Center.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in Jonesboro United Methodist Church by the Rev. Jeff Davis. Arrangements are being handled by Miller-Boles Funeral Home.

Ms. Rosenberg is survived by a son, William C. Rosenberg of Waukesha, Wis.; a daughter, Carol Krombos of Sanford; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Jonesboro United Methodist Church building fund, 407 W. Main St., Sanford, N.C. 27330.
