John T. Gibson, ex-chairmanof Redevelopment Commission

John T. Gibson, a retired educator and longtime member of the Fayetteville Redevelopment Commission, died Friday in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. Mr. Gibson, of 1869 Gola Drive, Fayetteville, was 78.

Mr. Gibson was an Army veteran of World War II.

He was a teacher for 30 years and was ‘‘Teacher of the Year’’ for Fayetteville City Schools in 1976.

Mr. Gibson was a founder and past board chairman of United National Bank.

He was a member of the Redevelopment Commission for years, serving as its chairman for much of his tenure.

Mr. Gibson was also a past board member of College Heights Credit Union. He was past president of the N.C. A & T University Alumni Association.

He was also an organizer and past president of Rockfish Memorial Park.

He was a member of Mount Sinai Baptist Church and a licensed real estate broker.

The funeral will be conducted at noon Monday in Mount Sinai Baptist Church by Dr. Aaron Johnson. Burial will be in Rockfish Memorial Park.

Mr. Gibson is survived by his wife, Gertha Gibson of Fayetteville; three daughters, Robertha P. Gibson of Englewood, N.J., Denise Gibson-Bailey of Washington, D.C., and Valda O. Gibson of Atlanta; two sisters, Spence O. Baird and Dorethia Andrews, both of Fayetteville; and two grandchildren.

The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 7:30 at Paye Funeral Home & Memorial Chapel.

Dr. Ellenbogen, physician,founder of Duke AIDS Clinic

Dr. Charles Ellenbogen, a prominent Fayetteville physician, died Saturday in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. Dr. Ellenbogen, of Fayetteville, was 60 years old.

Dr. Ellenbogen was a physician for 35 years. He established the first AIDS clinic at Duke University Medical Center.

Dr. Ellenbogen had been an Air Force colonel and accomplished author. He was awarded the Silver Award from the Medical Writer’s Association for an article published in Up & Coming magazine. He also wrote 33 articles that were published in medical journals, three books and a monthly newsletter under a grant from Roche Laboratories. His book titled ‘‘The FAHEC Clinical Manual’’ is used as the medical handbook for health-care workers who work with AIDS patients. He was chairman of the Cumberland County HIV Task Force.

Dr. Ellenbogen was a member of the State Board of Diabetes Association, the Cumberland County Medical Society, the North Carolina Medical Society, the American Medical Association, the American College of Physicians, Infectious Disease Society of America and the American Society of Microbiology. He was the chairman of various professional committees

The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. today in Beth Israel Synagogue by Rabbi Yosef Levanon. Burial will be in Beth Israel cemetery.

Arrangements are being handled by Rogers and Breece Funeral Home.

Dr. Ellenbogen is survived by his wife, Patricia Ellenbogen of the home; a son, Daniel Ellenbogen of Greensboro; a stepson, Kurt Meyer of Fayetteville; daughter, Jennie Ellenbogen of Cary; three stepdaughters, Gretchen Bezrutch of Hernando, Miss., Heidi Evans of Wahiana, Hawaii, and Ingrid Rafei of Fayetteville; his stepmother, Helen Ellenbogen of Mercer Island, Wash.; a sister, Elizabeth Welch of Portland, Ore.; two stepbrothers, Steve Chess of Mercer Island and Rodger Chess of Seattle; and seven grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Beth Israel Synagogue, 2204 Morganton Road, Fayetteville, N.C. 28303; or to Friends of the Cancer Center, care of Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, P.O. Box 2000, Fayetteville, N.C. 28302.

Elizabeth C. Dunn (Dated Sunday, October 10, 1999 )

BLADENBORO -- Mrs. Elizabeth Capel Dunn, 85, of Bladenboro died Saturday in Southeastern Regional Medical Center in Lumberton.

The funeral will be conducted at 4 p.m. Monday in First Baptist Church by Dr. Russell Cherry and the Revs. Lloyd Jackson and Robert Caldwell. Burial will be in Pinecrest Cemetery.

Mrs. Dunn is survived by four nieces.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Lewis Funeral Home.

Kaylia Davis (Dated Sunday, October 10, 1999 )

SPRING LAKE -- Miss Kaylia Davis, 14, of 350 Sierra Trail died Friday.

Arrangements will be announced by Adcock Funeral Home.

Gordon L. Chapman (Dated Sunday, October 10, 1999 )

HOFFMAN -- Gordon L. Chapman, 86, of Hoffman died Friday in FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.

A private service will be held. Arrangements are being handled by Boles Funeral Home.

Mr. Chapman is survived by his wife, Edna H. Chapman; two daughters, Carol Chapman of Denver and Suzanne Ascher of New York; and two grandchildren.

Billy R. Byrd (Dated Sunday, October 10, 1999 )

MOUNT GILEAD -- Billy Ray Byrd, 65, of 124 Nathan Byrd Drive died Friday.

The funeral will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. today in Hamer Creek Baptist Church by the Rev. Alex Willoughby. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by McKeithan Funeral Home.

Among Mr. Byrd’s survivors is a daughter, Deborah B. Morris of Bladenboro.

Magdalene B. Butler (Dated Sunday, October 10, 1999 )

LUMBERTON -- Mrs. Magdalene Bell Butler, 85, of 506 Mount Olive Church Road died Saturday in Southeastern Regional Medical Center.

The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Tuesday in Mount Moriah Church. Burial will be in Oxendine Cemetery.

Mrs. Butler is survived by a son, James Butler of the home; a daughter, Ola B. Emanuel of Lumberton; a sister, Betty Brich of Jacksonville, Fla.; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Floyd Mortuary & Crematory.

Juanita S. Britt (Dated Sunday, October 10, 1999 )

DUNN -- Mrs. Juanita Smith Britt, 88, of Route 3 died Saturday in Mary-Gran Nursing Center.

Mrs. Britt was a member of Lee Chapel Free Will Baptist Church. She worked for Belk Department Store before retiring.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in Royal-Hall Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. Phillip Boykin. Burial will be in Devotional Gardens.

Mrs. Britt is survived by a brother, Joseph D. Smith of Clinton.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at the funeral home.

Walter Brewer (Dated Sunday, October 10, 1999 )

PEMBROKE -- Walter Brewer, 79, of Pembroke died Saturday.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in Mount Airy Baptist Church by the Rev. Steve Strickland. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mr. Brewer is survived by two brothers, James Brewer of Greensboro and Sanford Brewer of Alexandria, Va.; and three sisters, Elizabeth B. Locklear of Pembroke and Dilila Sanderson and Rosia L. Oxendine, both of Fairmont.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Locklear & Son Funeral Home.

Cecilia W. Womack (Dated Wednesday, October 13, 1999 )

ABERDEEN -- Mrs. Cecilia Whitlock Womack, 34, of 147 Forest Drive died Monday in FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.

Arrangements will be announced by Simon Funeral Home of Southern Pines.Jimmy R. WilliamsSANFORD -- Jimmy Robert Williams, 59, of 1917 Whip-Poor-Will Lane died Monday in Central Carolina Hospital.

The funeral will be conducted at 4 p.m. Thursday in Shallow Well United Church of Christ by the Rev. Donald Thompson. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mr. Williams is survived by his wife, Betty M. Williams; two sons, Jason Williams of California and Ricky Taylor of Sanford; two daughters, Michelle Sharpe of Sanford and Barbara Downs of Burlington; his father, Curtis R. Williams of Sanford; a brother, Gary Williams of Sanford; three sisters, Sandra Tabayoyon, Karen Clack and Linda Starr, all of Sanford; and five grandchildren.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home.

Bobby Whitfield (Dated Wednesday, October 13, 1999 )

Retired Army Master Sgt. Bobby Whitfield, 67, of 1536 Strickland Bridge Road, Fayetteville, died Friday.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in New Bethel AME Zion Church by the Rev. Jessie W. Whitfield. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mr. Whitfield is survived by his wife, Luegusta Whitfield of Fayetteville; three sons, David A. Whitfield of Minneapolis and Terry W. Whitfield and Robert E. Whitfield, both of Fayetteville; a daughter, Janet W. Benton of Bamberg, Germany; three brothers, Jessie Whitfield and Howard Whitfield, both of Chicago, and J.D. Whitfield of Waynesboro, Miss.; two sisters, Marva Johnson and Darlene Embry, both of Chicago; and five grandchildren.

The public will be received today from 1 to 8 p.m. at Wiseman Mortuary.

The family will receive friends at the home.

Katie T. White (Dated Wednesday, October 13, 1999 )

SWANSBORO -- Mrs. Katie Tyree White, 84, of Yaupon Drive died Monday in Carteret General Hospital in Morehead City.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in Pleasant Hill Baptist Church by the Rev. Ricky Donaldson. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Among Mrs. White’s survivors are her husband, Arthur L. White of the home; and a son, Cecil Ikner of Fayetteville.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Worthington Funeral Home in Chadbourn.
