LAUREL HILL -- Mrs. Katherine S. Massengill of 17446 St. John’s Church Road died Sunday in Hamlet Hospital.

Mrs. Massengill was a homemaker. She was a member of Laurel Hill Baptist Church.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Hillside Memorial Park by the Rev. Don Malpass.

Mrs. Massengill is survived by two sons, Donald G. Massengill of Clemmons and Wayland B. Massengill Jr. of Crouse; two daughters, Lucille M. Hill of Duluth, Ga., and Beverly M. McLauchlin of Laurel Hill; two sisters, Josephine E. Crowe of Seminole, Fla., and Beverly S. Jordan of Siler City; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at McDougald Funeral Home & Crematorium.

Memorials may be made to Laurel Hill Baptist Church, P.O. Box 367, Laurel Hill, N.C. 28351.

Elwood J. Marshall
(Dated Monday, December 13, 1999)
VALDOSTA, Ga. -- Elwood J. ‘‘Woody’’ Marshall, 79, of Valdosta died Saturday.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Carson McLane Funeral Home by the Rev. Mike Nelligan. Burial will be in McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens.

Among Mr. Marshall’s survivors is a son, Peter Marshall of Hope Mills, N.C.

Otha Worthy
(Dated Monday, December 13, 1999)
VASS -- Otha Worthy, 79, of Vass died Thursday in Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Fayetteville.

The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Tuesday in Frye’s Chapel Free Will Baptist Church. Burial will be in Frye’s Chapel Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Knotts Funeral Home of Sanford.

Mr. Worthy is survived by a daughter, Lisa Chavis of the home; a son, Thomas J. Worthy of the home; two sisters, Lizzie Ritter and Lillie Freeman, both of Raleigh; and five grandchildren.

A wake will be held tonight from 7 to 8 at the church.

Naomi J. Howard
(Dated Monday, December 13, 1999)
BEULAVILLE -- Mrs. Naomi Jones Howard, 68, of Beulaville died Saturday in Duke University Medical Center in Durham.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Community Funeral Home chapel. Burial will be in Devotional Gardens in Warsaw.

Mrs. Howard is survived by four daughters, Ann Chaney of Winterhaven, Fla., Helen Bennett of Fayetteville, Connie Deaver of Deep Run and Tammy Howard of Chapel Hill; and eight grandchildren.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Sarecta Free Will Baptist Church.

Grace Hilger

LAURINBURG -- Mrs. Grace Hilger of 2200 Elm Ave. died Saturday in Scotia Village.

Arrangements will be announced by McDougald Funeral Home & Crematorium.

James F. Gibson Sr.
(Dated Monday, December 13, 1999)
James Farley Gibson Sr., 74, of Fayetteville died Friday in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.

Mr. Gibson was in the Army for 24 years before retiring. He was a veteran of World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He was a member of American Legion No. 1788. He was a greeter for Wal-Mart.

A graveside service with military honors will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Cross Creek Cemetery by the Rev. Bobby Tyson.

Mr. Gibson is survived by three sons, James F. Gibson Jr. and Alton H. ‘‘Al’’ Gibson, both of Fayetteville, and Patrick C. Gibson Sr. of Lafargeville, N.Y.; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home.

Conley A. Jacobs Sr.
(Dated Monday, December 13, 1999)
PEMBROKE -- Conley A. Jacobs Sr., 77, of J.C. Hut Road died Saturday.

The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Tuesday in Harpers Ferry Baptist Church by the Revs. Gary P. Thompson and Horace Oxendine. Burial will be in Tribal Mound Cemetery.

Mr. Jacobs is survived by his wife, Clara Jacobs of Pembroke; a son, Conley Jacobs Jr. of Pembroke; and a grandson.

The family will receive friends tonight beginning at 7 at Thompson’s Funeral Home.

Cora H. Nunnery
(Dated Monday, December 13, 1999)
Mrs. Cora Hattie Nunnery of 2400 Lake Upchurch Drive, Fayetteville, died Sunday in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.

Mrs. Nunnery was the owner and operator of Nunnery’s Florist before retiring. She was a member of Cumberland United Methodist Church.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Hope Mills Cemetery by the Rev. Hope Vickers. Arrangements are being handled by Hamilton-Porter Funeral Home of Hope Mills.

Mrs. Nunnery is survived by her husband, Willie Nunnery of the home; a daughter, Betty L. Sealey of Parkton; a son, Larry F. Nunnery of Fayetteville; a sister, Jean Morse of Atlanta; a brother, Jeff Johnson of Morehead City; and three grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the home.

John E. Richardson
(Dated Monday, December 13, 1999)
CLARKTON -- John Eugene Richardson, 85, of 367 Railroad Ave. died Sunday in Bladen County Hospital in Elizabethtown.

The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Tuesday in Clarkton Baptist Church by the Rev. Michael Thompson. Burial will be in Clarkton Cemetery.

Mr. Richarson is survived by his wife, Mildred Richardson of the home; four sons, Jimmy Richardson of Bladenboro, Bobby Richardson and Steve Richardson, both of Clarkton, and Mickey Richardson of Lumberton; three daughters, Millie Guyton of Bladenboro, Gayle Faircloth of Roseboro and Judith Hayes of Cerro Gordo; a sister, Eva M. Tyner of Florence, S.C.; 14 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Lewis-Bowen Funeral Home in Bladenboro.

Milan Murja
(Dated Monday, December 13, 1999)
Retired Lt. Col. Milan Murja, 69, of 681-7 Bartons Landing, Fayetteville, died Friday in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.

Mr. Murja was a chaplain in the military for 25 years. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War.

The funeral will be conducted at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday in Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home chapel by Father Nicholas Czaruk and the Rev. Milan Savich. Burial with military honors will be in Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery in Spring Lake.

Mr. Murja is survived by his wife, Bridget Murja of the home; a daughter, Melanie Leja of Cary, Ill.; a son, Gregory Murja of Louisville, Ky.; two stepchildren, Tommy Pawlak and Patricia Warren; three sisters, Sarah Ogden of Salt Lake City and Mille Vukovich and Coakey ‘‘Sophie’’ Vukovich, both of Butte, Mont.; four grandchildren; four step-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at the funeral home.

Elizabeth M. Lawson

ORRUM -- Ms. Elizabeth M. Lawson, 84, of 1385 S. Creek Road died Sunday in her home.

Ms. Lawson was a homemaker.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Orrum Baptist Church by the Revs. Sydney Britt and Robert Britt. Burial will be in the Lawson family cemetery.

Ms. Lawson is survived by two sons, Jerry Lawson of Calabash and Dennie E. Edwards of Charlotte; five daughters, Dale L. Nay, Faye L. Foley, Lynda L. Prevatte and Gayle L. Wilkes, all of Orrum, and Debra L. O’Tuel of Navarre Beach, Fla.; 10 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Floyd Mortuary & Crematory.

Gertie Stone

LUMBERTON -- Ms. Gertie Stone, 83, of 63 Beulah Church Road died Saturday in Southeastern Regional Medical Center.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Floyd Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Ronald Long. Burial will be in Gardens of Faith Cemetery.

Ms. Stone is survived by a son, W.J. Stone of Lumberton; a daughter, Judy S. Monroe of St. Pauls; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Floyd Mortuary & Crematory.
