HALLSBORO -- John Edward Freeman, 79, of Hallsboro died Saturday in Century Care Center in Whiteville.
The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday in Mount Hebron AME Zion Church by the Rev. William Ballard. Burial will be in Mount Hebron Memorial Park. Arrangements are being handled by Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville.
Mr. Freeman is survived by his wife, Nellie D. Freeman; a daughter, Nellie Mae Freeman of Whiteville; a son, Wilbert Jacobs of Hallsboro; two sisters, Mary J. Smith of Plainfield, N.J., and Della Mae Nichols of Hallsboro; and two brothers, Robert J. Freeman of Hallsboro and Arthur Freeman of Pensacola, Fla.
Stella H. McDuffie

COUNCIL -- Ms. Stella Bolton Hatcher McDuffie, 76, of 649 Baltimore Road died Sunday in Bladen County Hospital in Elizabethtown.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in Carver’s Creek United Methodist Church by the Revs. David Wade and Sidney Britt. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Ms. McDuffie is survived by two daughters, Judy Crain of Blue Springs, Mo., and Sylvia Bickell of Dell City, Okla.; five sons, George McDuffie of Wenatchee, Wash., Jack McDuffie of Elizabethtown, Don McDuffie of Council, Edward McDuffie of San Antonio and Beau McDuffie of Roanoke Rapids; a sister, Ann Taylor of Gatesville; and a brother, John M. Hatcher of Charlottsville, Va.; 24 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 to 9 at Kinlaw Funeral Home.

Betty J. Ward

ST. PAULS -- Ms. Betty Jenkins Ward, 64, of 539 N. Fourth St. died Monday in her home.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Saint Pauls Funeral Home’s Wallace Chapel. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Cemetery.
Ms. Ward is survived by two sons, Mike Jenkins of Florence, S.C., and Frankie Jenkins of Conway, S.C.; two daughters, Diane Edge of St. Pauls and Tammy Stevens of Nakina; a sister, Joyce Cameron of St. Pauls; seven grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at the funeral home and at other times at the home of Diane Edge, 1296 Covington Farm Road, St. Pauls.
Ms. LaVada P. Ziggas (Dated Monday, July 19, 1999)
Ms. LaVada Pearl Ziggas, 84, of Fayetteville died Saturday in Highland House Nursing Home.
The funeral will be conducted at 5 p.m. Tuesday in Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home by the Rev. Samuel Walls. A private burial will be held at a later date.
Ms. Ziggas is survived by two daughters, Roxann Dent of Stafford, Va., and Sandra Collingsworth of Kent, England; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Smith, Booker T. Smith and James E. Smith, all of Erwin, Norvell Smith of Bronx, N.Y., and Eugene Smith of Bunnlevel; two sisters, Herlene Blount of Bunnlevel and Anna Smith of Erwin; and three grandchildren.
