Harry Lee Poindexter, 22, of 342 N. McPherson Church Road, Fayetteville, died Tuesday in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.

Among Mr. Poindexter’s survivors is a sister, Ketina Holland of Fayetteville and his maternal grandmother, Kathleen Poindexter of Southport.

J. B. Carlyle

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- OS 1 J.B. Carlyle, 62, of 1928 Daton Road, formerly of Moore County, N.C., died Friday in his home.

Mr. Carlyle was a Navy veteran.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday in Putnam Friends Church near Carthage, N.C. by the Revs. Ernest Moore and D.L. Hussey. Burial with military honors will be in the church cemetery.

Mr. Carlyle is survived by his wife, Patricia T. Carlyle of the home; a daughter, Donna L. Carrop of Virginia Beach, Va.; a son, Timothy L. Carlyle of the home; his mother, Lucinda L. Carlyle of Cameron; four sisters, Stella Whitaker and JoAnn Baxley, both of Carthage, Joyce Futral of Vass and Peggy Patterson of Sanford; two brothers, David O. Carlyle of Bennett and Gerald Carlyle of Southern Pines; and three grandchildren.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at Fry & Prickett Funeral Home.

Christopher J. Smith

BLADENBORO -- Christopher Jack Smith, 31, of Horseshoe Road died Friday.

Mr. Smith was a monument designer for Hester-Modern Memorials.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Truevine Holiness Church by the Rev. James Hester. Burial will be in Memory Lane Cemetery.

Mr. Smith is survived by his parents, the Rev. and Mrs. Jack Smith of Elizabethtown; a sister, Barbara S. Meadows of Tabor City; and four brothers, Casey Smith of White Lake, Perry Smith of Bladenboro, and Jack Smith Jr. and Andrew Smith, both of the home.

The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 9 at Lewis-Bowen Funeral Home and at other times at the home of his parents, 290 Bladen Lakes School Road, Elizabethtown.

Mrs. Laura H. Blue

Mrs. Laura H. Blue, 90, of Sunrise Care and Rehabilitation Center, Fayetteville, died Tuesday in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.

Mrs. Blue was an educator in the Cumberland County School system for 46 years.

The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Mount Sinai Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Aaron J. Johnson. Burial will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Raleigh National Cemetery in Raleigh. Arrangements are being handled by Lightner Funeral Home and Cremations of Raleigh.

Mrs. Blue is survived by several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from noon to 1 p.m. at the church.

Miss Annie L. Smith

PEMBROKE, Ga. -- Miss Annie Lou Smith, 69, of Pembroke, formerly of Bladen County, N.C., died Thursday in Candler Hospital in Savannah.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in Biggs Funeral Home chapel in Lumberton, N.C. by the Rev. Stan-Gallagher Smith. Burial will be in Smith family cemetery in Lumberton.

Ms. Smith is survived by three daughters, Shirley Smith and Judy Harris, both of Pembroke, and Linda Early of Savannah; two brothers, George Smith of Hope Mills, N.C., and Wilson Smith of Kelly, N.C.; two sisters, Sarah Vause of Elizabethtown, N.C., and Ada L. Smith of Savannah; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at the funeral home.

Ms. Mary H. Jones (Dated Monday, August 9, 1999)

FALCON -- Ms. Mary Eva Hall Jones, 79, of Golden Years Nursing Home, formerly of Dunn, died Sunday in Betsy Johnson Memorial Hospital in Erwin.

The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Tuesday in Glad Tidings Church. Burial will be in Devotional Gardens.

Ms. Jones is survived by three sons, James Jones and Ronald Jones Sr., both of Dunn, and Tony Jones of Trenton, N.J.; a daughter, Pamela J. Tew of Dunn; three brothers, Hubert Hall of Burlington, Rupert Hall of Wade and David Hall of Douglasville, Ga.; four sisters, Eutha Tew of Long Island, N.Y., Willa D. Norris of Beaumont, Texas, Peggy Jumalon of Fayetteville and Eunice Kline of Pittsburgh; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Skinner Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Ronald Jones, 608 S. Layton Ave., Dunn.

K. Ray Turnage Sr. (Dated Monday, August 9, 1999)

FOUR OAKS -- Kenneth Ray Turnage Sr., 53, of Boyette Road died Saturday in Kitty Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro.

Mr. Turnage was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War. He was a member of Unity Advent Christian Church.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Rose & Graham Funeral Home chapel in Benson by the Rev. Billy Keene. Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery in Benson.

Mr. Turnage is survived by a son, Kenneth R. Turnage Jr. of Hampton, Va.; his mother, Viola B. Turnage of Four Oaks; four sisters, Glenda T. Jackson of Siler City, Patricia T. Stanley and Carolyn T. Allen, both of Four Oaks, and Janice T. Wood of Benson; five brothers, Lloyd C. Turnage of Dunn, J.W. Turnage of Four Oaks, Larry R. Turnage of Holden Beach, Floyd L. Turnage of Benson and Danny L. Turnage of Farmville; and a granddaughter.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at the funeral home and at other times at the home of Floyd Linwood and Sharon Turnage, 2209 N. Wall St., Benson.

Mrs. Cathy Gillis Holmes, 31, of 6337 Hawfield Drive, Fayetteville, died Sunday in her home.

Rev. Ronnie C. Robertson (Dated Monday, August 9, 1999)

LINDEN -- The Rev. Ronnie Clayton Robertson, 62, of 6930 Moray St. died Sunday in his home.

The Rev. Robertson was the pastor of Pleasant Hill Advent Christian Church.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Hollandale Advent Christian Church in Spring Lake by the Revs. Brent Carpenter, John E. Hedgepeth and Larry Withrow. Burial will be in Riverview Memorial Gardens in Spring Lake.

The Rev. Robertson is survived by his wife, Sandra H. Robertson of Linden; two daughters, Renee R. McLamb of Fayetteville and Kay R. Autrey of Columbia, S.C.; a son, Ronnie C. Robertson Jr. of Charlotte; a brother, Earl Robertson of Augusta, Ga.; three sister, Ethel Clark, Dorothy Carroll and Lillian Suggs, all of Augusta; and two grandsons.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Adcock Funeral Home in Spring Lake.

HOPE MILLS -- Air Force Airman Cedrick S. McNair, 20, of 1962 Smith Road died Sunday.

Mrs. Margaret Chavis (Dated Monday, August 9, 1999)

PEMBROKE -- Mrs. Margaret Chavis, 83, of 608 McCormick Circle died Saturday in Southeastern Regional Medical Center in Lumberton.

The funeral will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday in Sycamore Hill Holiness Church in Maxton by the Revs. Billy Clark, Terry Cummings and Jerry Groves. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Revels Funeral Home.

Mrs. Chavis is survived by her husband, the Rev. John C. Chavis of Pembroke; a daughter, Elizabeth C. Locklear of Pembroke; a son, Clarence Chavis of Greensboro; three sisters, Alice Oxendine of Rowland, Josephine Woodell of Pembroke and Nieveah Locklear of Greensboro; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at the church.

Ms. Martha L. Hill (Dated Monday, August 9, 1999)

ABERDEEN -- Ms. Martha Louise Hill, 59, of 7008 Callaway Road died Sunday in Manor Care of Pinehurst.

A graveside service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the Watson family cemetery.

Ms. Hill is survived by a son, Jerry Hill of Sanford; two brothers, Buddy Hill of Lemon Springs and Leo Watson of Knob Noster, Mo.; and two sisters, Edna Hill of Johnsonville and Betty Lowery of Aberdeen.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Rogers-Pickard Funeral Home.

CLINTON -- Andrew Evans, 37, of 613 Winfrey St. died Sunday in Duke University Medical Center in Durham.

Mrs. Irene Ford, 70, of 6324 Glenlee Circle, Fayetteville, died Sunday in Forest Hill Rest Home.

Fred D. ‘Freddie’ Powell (Dated Monday, August 9, 1999)

LUMBERTON -- Fred Douglas ‘‘Freddie’’ Powell, 73, of 1712 Maryland St. died Friday in Highsmith-Rainey Memorial Hospital in Fayetteville.

The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Tuesday in Star Bethlehem Baptist Church in Fairmont by Dr. W.C. Marable and the Rev. Vernon C. King. Burial will be in Fairmont Cemetery.

Mr. Powell is survived by his wife, Elizabeth G. Powell of the home; three daughters, Patricia F. Fulmore and Anita E. Powell, both of Fairmont, and Erica Powell of Laurinburg; a sister, Polly Barr of Camden, N.J.; four brothers, Paul Baker Jr., Peter Baker, John Baker and Daniel Baker, all of Fairmont; and two grandchildren.

The public will be received today from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Hill’s Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 2 to 3 p.m. at the church.
