CLEMENTON, N.J. -- Retired Navy Master Chief Petty Officer Jennings ‘‘Smitty’’ McKinnon, 68, of 633 Milbridge Apts., formerly of Raeford, N.C., died Sunday in Kennedy Memorial Hospital in Stratford.

Mr. McKinnon served in the Navy for 30 years before retiring.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in Silver Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Raeford by the Rev. J.W. Parsons and Bishop C. McKinnon. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mr. McKinnon is survived by his wife, Mary McKinnon of Deptford; three daughters, Beverly Thomas of Camden, Jennese Chabot of Ingleside, Texas, and Keely Rich of Odenton, Md.; a son, Michael J. McKinnon of Blackwood; two sisters, Vivian McAllister of Greensboro, N.C., and Beverly McRae of Raeford; two brothers, Willie J. McKinnon of Raeford and Walter McKinnon of Greensboro; and six grandchildren.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8 at Buie Funeral Home in Raeford.

Jackie T. Carter

Jackie Thomas Carter, 48, of 6360 N.C. 87 South, Fayetteville, died Wednesday in Highsmith-Rainey Memorial Hospital.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in Cross Creek Cemetery by Chaplain Bobby Bunce.

Mr. Carter is survived by two sons, Shawn Carter and Trictian Carter, both of Clinton; two daughters, Michelle Gregory of Raleigh and Kim Clem of New Hampshire; two brothers, John M. Carter of Erwin and Gary L. Carter of Hope Mills; and a grandchild.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at the home of Fraley and Mildred Windsor, 3209 Kentyre Drive and Saturday from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. at Highland Funeral Service & Crematory.

Arnett W. Brown Jr.

(Dated Friday, May 28, 1999)
Retired Army Command Sgt. Maj. Arnett Woodville Brown Jr., 77, of 6348 Kincross Ave., Fayetteville, died Thursday in Womack Army Medical Center on Fort Bragg.

During Mr. Brown’s career, he received the Army Commendation Medal, the Vietnam Commendation Medal, the Bronze Star and the Meritorious Service Medal, as well as other awards for serving in the Vietnam War and World War II.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in Arran Lake Baptist Church by the Rev. Jeff Isenhour. Burial with military honors will be in Cumberland Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Brown is survived by his wife, Mary L. Brown of the home; two sons, 1st Sgt. Dennis W. Brown of Raleigh and Maj. Gen. Bryan D. Brown of Fort Bragg; a daughter, Teresa S. McLamb of Fayetteville; a sister, Emma L. Long of Clarksburg, W.Va.; and six grandchildren.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Rogers and Breece Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Arran Lake Baptist Church or to Vietnam Veterans of America, 1224 Main St. N.W., Washington, D.C. 20005-5183.

Clarence Williams, 53, of 224 Bob St., Fayetteville, died Wednesday in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.

Raymond Hicks

Raymond Hicks, 91, of Fayetteville died Wednesday in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.

Mr. Hicks is survived by a son, Ronald D. Hicks of Fayetteville; a daughter, Sharon Schorpp of Ames, Iowa; a brother, Delbert Hicks of Moline, Ill.; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ronald D. Hicks, 160 Carver’s Falls Road, Fayetteville.

Arrangements are being handled by Highland Funeral Service & Crematory.

Memorials may be made to Archangel Michael Antiochene Maronite Catholic Church, 806 Arsenal Ave., Fayetteville, N.C. 28305; or to the charity of one’s choice.

Stanley K. Gilbert

HAMPTON, Va. -- Retired Army Col. Stanley Keith Gilbert, 77, of Hampton died Tuesday in Hampton General Hospital.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday in Chapel of the Centurion in Fort Monroe. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington. Arrangements are being handled by R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home.

Among Mr. Gilbert’s survivors is a son, Dr. Stanley K. Gilbert Jr. of Fayetteville, N.C.

Bossie Powell Jr.

Bossie Powell Jr., 61, of 2716 Fort Bragg Road, Fayetteville, died Monday in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in Dove Chapel AME Zion Church by the Rev. M.E. Stubbs. Burial will be in Royal Chapel Baptist Church cemetery in Harrells.

Mr. Powell is survived by his wife, Caroline C. Powell; two sons, Jason O. Powell and Bossie Powell III, both of Fayetteville; his mother, Blanchie Powell of Fayetteville; two sisters, Dorothy Gurganious of Camp Spring, Md., and Willa Dorsie of Fayetteville; two brothers, Wavley Powell and Tyrone Powell, both of Fayetteville; and four grandchildren.

The public will be received today from 1 to 7 p.m. at Carter Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends at the home of Willa Dorsie, 5150 Wichita Drive, Fayetteville.

Ms. Gwendolyn P. Tullar

Ms. Gwendolyn Potter Tullar, 94, of 2325 Rolling Hill Road, Fayetteville, died Wednesday in Village Green Care Center.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in Rogers and Breece Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. C. Wayne Ham. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Fort Dodge, Iowa.

Ms. Tullar is survived by a daughter, Sid K. Mozena of Fayetteville; a sister, D.F. MacLachlan of Redlands, Calif.; two grandsons; and two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Saturday from 1 to 2 p.m. at the funeral home.

CERRO GORDO -- Ms. Chronia Henry Hayes, 77, of Hayes Road died Thursday in Columbus County Hospital in Whiteville.

The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday in Cedar Grove Baptist Church by the Revs. Howard W. Fowler, Thomas Fairfax and Garland Long. Burial will be in Chadbourn Memorial Cemetery.

Ms. Hayes is survived by a son, James H. Hayes of Cerro Gordo; two daughters, Frances H. Stephens of Brunswick and Margie H. Dillard of Evergreen; two sisters, Essie H. Mercer of Chadbourn and Veda Bucklew of Albertsville, Ala.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

BLADENBORO -- Eric Stefan Pait, 19, of 73 Hemlock Drive died Wednesday in New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington.

Mr. Pait is survived by his wife, Mandi Gause of Bladenboro; a son, Eric S. Pait II of Bladenboro; his mother, Teresa P. Hoskins of Bladenboro; his father, Woody C. Pait of Hope Mills; two sisters, Tiffany F. Parnell and Shenna V. Parnell, both of Bladenboro; his maternal grandmother, Amanda Sellers of Whiteville; his paternal grandfather, James Pait of Alabama; his paternal grandmother, Helen Pait of Bladenboro; and his great-grandmothers, Ruth Sellers and Virginia Bullard, both of Whiteville.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Lewis-Bowen Funeral Home.

WADE -- Mrs. Doretha Elliott McArthur, 57, of Route 2 died Tuesday in her home.

The funeral will be conducted at 4 p.m. Saturday in Bethlehem Free Will Baptist Church by elder Catherine Elliott. Burial will be in LaFayette Memorial Park in Fayetteville.

Mrs. McArthur is survived by her husband, Hubert McArthur of Wade; four daughters, Priscella Agosta of Fort Knox, Ky., Erical McArthur and Tonya McArthur, both of Fayetteville, and Arical McArthur of Wade; four sons, Alexander McArthur and Anthony McArthur, both of Fayetteville, and Eric McArthur and Herbert McArthur, both of Wade; a stepdaughter, Gieniel Bryant of Brooklyn, N.Y.; her stepfather, Cleveland Smith of Wade; seven sisters, Delores Armstrong of Washington, D.C., Margaret Howard of Fayetteville, Fannie Parker of West Virginia and Regina Parker, Thelma Smith, Betty Harvey and Viola Smith, all of Wade; 16 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

The pubic will be received today from 1 to 8 p.m. at Wiseman Mortuary in Fayetteville.

The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Friday in Union Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Paul Honeycutt. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Williams is survived by a son, D.M. Williams Jr. of Autryville; three sisters, Victoria Butler of Greensboro and Thelma Tyndall and Lola Odom, both of Erwin; a brother, Edgar Spell of Sanford; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Butler Funeral Home.

Bobby C. Vamper (Dated Thursday, July 8, 1999)

HAMLET -- Bobby Cobb Vamper, 48, of 204 Bridges St. died Monday in Hamlet Hospital.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday in Prayer and Faith Temple Church of God in Christ by Superintendent T.R. Legrand. Burial will be in Dobbins Memorial Cemetery.

Mr. Vamper is survived by four brothers, Robert Vamper, James Vamper and Roosevelt Vamper Jr., all of Miami, and Cloudy Vamper of Southern Pines; and a sister, Liza Kemp of Miami.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8 at McNeill Funerals.
