Miss Johnsie L. Covington (dated Friday, Dec. 12, 1997)

HAMLET -- Miss Johnsie L. Covington, 81, of Highway 74 East died Saturday in Hamlet Hospital.

She was a member of Poplar Springs Baptist Church and was a retired seamstress.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in Poplar Springs Baptist Church by the Rev. Purnell McQueen. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Miss Covington is survived by several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 7:30 at Nelson Funeral Service.

Mrs. Cynthia L. Jerald (dated Friday, Dec. 12, 1997)

LUMBERTON -- Mrs. Cynthia Leach Jerald, 47, of Lumberton died recently in Southeastern Regional Medical Center.

Arrangements will be announced by McMillan Funeral Home.

Curtis L. Burns (dated Saturday, Dec. 13, 1997)

SANFORD -- Curtis Lee Burns, 72, of 1901 Woodland Ave., died Thursday in Central Carolina Hospital.

He was an Air Force veteran of World War II and was a retired civil service worker.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. Dale Miller. Burial will be in Lee Memory Gardens.

Mr. Burns is survived by his wife, Juanita G. Burns; three daughters, Glenda Beal and Debbie Burns, both of Goldston, and Becky Patterson of Broadway; a sister, Lucy Thomas of Creedmore; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 8:30 at the funeral home and at other times at the home.

Mrs. Bessie J. Ray (dated Saturday, Dec. 13, 1997)

Mrs. Bessie Jane Ray, 81, of Fayetteville, died Friday in Rock Hill, S.C.

Arrangements will be announced by Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home.

Joseph O. Gregory (dated Saturday, Dec. 13, 1997)

LILLINGTON -- Joseph O. Gregory, 81, of Lillington died Thursday in Britthaven Nursing Home in Erwin.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in O’Quinn-Peebles Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. Hubert Morgan. Burial will be in Harnett Memorial Park.

Mr. Gregory is survived by his wife, Irene M. Gregory of the home; three daughters, Joyce Harrelson and Dottie Hood, both of Lillington, and Peggy S. Powell of Fuquay-Varina; a son, Jerry Gregory of Erwin; a sister, Ethel Capps of Coats; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at the funeral home and at other times at the home of Joyce Harrelson.

Mrs. Dorothy K. Jones (dated Saturday, Dec. 13, 1997)

HAMLET -- Mrs. Dorothy Kate Jones, 81, of Britthaven of Hamlet nursing home died Wednesday in Hamlet Hospital.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in Pemberton Temple Church of God in Christ by Superintendent John Spruill. Burial will be in Northside Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Charles McNeill Funerals.

Mrs. Jones is survived by two sons, William Jones of Red Springs and Roosevelt Jones of Hamlet; three daughters, Amelia Barnes and Shirley Jones, both of Hamlet and Valerie Blackwell of Rockingham; a brother, Cornell Cosby of Greenville, S.C.; three sisters, Bernice Sherman and Adabell Kennedy, both of Greenville and Evelyn Talbert of Richmond, Va.; 14 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Mrs. Inez Sturgis (dated Saturday, Dec. 13, 1997)

HAMLET -- Mrs. Inez Sturgis of 170 Fifth Street Ext., died Friday in Palmer Hinson Care Center.

Arrangements will be announced by McNeil Funerals.

Mrs. Mildred W. Tillman (dated Saturday, Dec. 13, 1997)

CARTHAGE -- Mrs. Mildred Warren Tillman, 85, of 2420 Cool Springs Road died Friday in Pinehurst Nursing Center.

She was formerly a sales clerk for Mack’s Dime Store, a member of Cool Springs United Methodist Church and a Sunday school teacher.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in Cool Springs United Methodist Church by the Revs. Mary E. Bender and Jeff Davis. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Tillman is survived by a son, Warren G. Tillman of Glendon; two brothers, Eugene Warren of Glendon and Lee Warren of Sanford; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; and six step-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Kennedy Funeral Home in Robbins and at other times at the home of Warren G. Tillman, 1956 Putnam-Glendon Road, Glendon.

Oscar C. Hudson (dated Saturday, Dec. 13, 1997)

HIGHLAND, Calif. -- Oscar C. Hudson, 69, of Highland, formerly of Fayetteville, N.C., died Monday in his home.

The funeral service was conducted Friday.

Mr. Hudson is survived by a son, Melton Hudson of the home; a daughter, Susan Clark of San Bernardino; five sisters, Irene Thomas and Kathleen Hackney, both of Fayetteville, Dorothy Pitts of Springfield, Va., and Jane Stannard and Lillian Kraycik, both of Easton, Penn.; and one grandchild.

Mrs. Theresa R. Gatto (dated Saturday, Dec. 13, 1997)

Mrs. Theresa J. Romano Gatto, of Fayetteville died Dec. 4.

A prayer service will be held at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday in Busch Family Funeral Home chapel in Cleveland. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery in Cleveland. Local arrangements are being handled by Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. and Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. in Busch Family Funeral Home Chapel.

Reedis Brooks (dated Saturday, Dec. 13, 1997)

CAMERON -- Reedis Brooks, 80, of 53 Brinkley Lane died Friday in Central Carolina Hospital.

The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Sunday in Williams Chapel Presbyterian Church cemetery by the Rev. Chalmers McDougald. Arrangements are being handled by Horton Funeral Home.

Mr. Brooks is survived by his wife, Irene Brooks of Cameron; a daughter, Willie M. Brinkley of Cameron; five grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the home.

Bennett A. Sigman (dated Saturday, Dec. 13, 1997)

BOLTON -- Bennett A. Sigman, 91, of Bolton died Friday in Columbus County Hospital in Whiteville.

The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday in Carvers Creek United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mr. Sigman is survived by his wife, Pauline H. Sigman of Bolton; a son, Claude Sigman of Hickory; a daughter, Margie S. Turner of Hickory; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at McKenzie Mortuary.

Ms. Mary M. Bryant (dated Saturday, Dec. 13, 1997)

CAMERON -- Ms. Mary M. Bryant, 58, of 180 Donathan Road died Friday in FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.

She formerly worked for Ithica Industries.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in Calvary Baptist Church by the Rev. Leonard Moore.

Ms. Bryant is survived by a daughter, Terry Bryant of Cameron; a son, Jimmie Bryant of Cameron; her mother, Jona M. Lambert of Robbins; a brother, Clarence Lambert Jr. of Robbins; and two grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Fry-Prickett Funeral Home in Carthage and at other times at the home.

James C. ‘Pa’ Locklear (dated Saturday, Dec. 13, 1997)

MAXTON -- James Clayton “Pa” Locklear, 59, of 1228 Jacobs Road died Wednesday in Southeastern Regional Medical Center in Lumberton.

The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday in Back Swamp Tabernacle by the Revs. Lamon Locklear, Edward Brooks, William Chavis and James E. Scott. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Locklear & Son Funeral Home.

Mr. Locklear is survived by his wife, Lena Locklear of the home; four sons, Jerry Locklear and Frank Locklear, both of Maxton, Ronald Locklear of Pembroke and Currie Locklear of Davy, W.Va.; four daughters, Anita Deal and Corinthia Locklear, both of Rowland, and Patsy Oxendine and Jewel Lowery, both of Maxton; three brothers, Billy D. Locklear of Charlotte, Brady J. Locklear of Lumberton and Joe Locklear of Rennert; three sisters, Mazel Brayboy of Charlotte, Estelle Locklear of Maxton and Sally A. Brayboy of Hamlet; 18 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends tonight after 5 at the church.

James Locklear (dated Saturday, Dec. 13, 1997)

LAURINBURG -- James Locklear, 52, of 925 Biggs St., died Friday in Scotland Memorial Hospital.

The funeral will be conducted at 4 p.m. Monday in Good News Chapel Church by the Rev. S. Barton. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mr. Locklear is survived by his wife, Vera Locklear of Laurinburg; two sons, James S. Locklear and Stephen Locklear, both of Laurinburg; a daughter, April Locklear of the home; his father, James Scott of Pembroke; two sisters, Janie Clark of Laurinburg and Betty White of Charlotte; and six grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 at Butler Funeral Service.

Ambrose Chavis Jr. (dated Saturday, Dec. 13, 1997)

LUMBERTON -- Ambrose Chavis Jr. of Nealy Avenue died Thursday in Southeastern Regional Medical Center.

He was retired as owner and operator of Chavis’ Funeral Home and retired after 32 years with Robeson County schools.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Sunday in Deep Branch Baptist Church by the Revs. Coolidge Cummings, James A. Hunt, Charles Maynor and Terry McNeill.

Mr. Chavis is survived by two daughters, Donna C. Locklear of Lumberton and Gail C. Evers of Lexington; a sister, Lois C. Dalton of Fredrick, Md.; a brother, Albert C. Hunt of Pembroke; and three grandchildren.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Revels Funeral Home in Pembroke.
