Mrs. Viola M. Bridges (dated Saturday, Dec. 27, 1997)
RAEFORD -- Mrs. Viola McNeill Bridges, 75, of 6240 Turnpike Road, died Wednesday in her home.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in Shady Grove Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Johnnie W. Gorham. Burial will be in Oak Hill Baptist Church cemetery in Wagram.
Mrs. Bridges is survived by five daughters, Josephine McMillan of Raeford, Bernice Lewis of Freeport, N.Y., Alice Bridges of Roosevelt, N.Y., Gracie Gilliard of Greensboro and Lillie Melvin of Hempstead, N.Y.; two sons, Elijah Bridges of the home and Donnell Bridges of New York; three sisters, Lillie M. Jenkins, Earlene Cook and Mamie Graham, all of Greensboro; five half sisters, Ruby McNeill and Gretrude McNeill, both of Durham, Peggy McNeill of Lillington, Sally McNeill of Wagram and Patricia McNeill of Laurinburg; a brother, Willie L. McNeill of Greensboro; a half brother, Eana McNeill of Durham; 16 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends today from 1 to 7 p.m. at Butler’s Funeral Home of Raeford.
Edward A. Powell (dated Saturday, Dec. 27, 1997)
ST. PAULS -- Edward A. Powell, 76, of St. Pauls, died Tuesday in Southeastern Regional Medical Center in Lumberton.
He was a deacon and a member of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. James Robinson. Burial will be in St. John’s Church cemetery in Shannon.
Mr. Powell is survived by two daughters, Evelyn Lewis and Mary A. Jones, both of St. Pauls; two sons, Minister Perry Shipman and Alexander Powell; six sisters, the Rev. Elizabeth Ray of Virginia, and Stella W. Reeds, Mary K. Allen, Helen Hill, Shirley R. Powell and Katherine Wilson, all of New Jersey; three brothers, Robert Powell of New Jersey, Wade Powell of New York and Emory Powell.
The family will receive friends today from 1 to 7 p.m. at Butler’s Funeral Home in St. Pauls.
Kenneth D. McGrayne (dated Saturday, Dec. 27, 1997)
WHISPERING PINES -- Kenneth Dawson McGrayne, 89, of 108 S. Lakeshore Drive died Wednesday in FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.
Arrangements are being handled by Powell Funeral Home and Crematory of Southern Pines.
Mr. McGrayne is survived by his wife, Mary M. McGrayne; two sons, Christopher S. McGrayne of Asheville and Jeffrey K. McGrayne of Carthage; and five grandchildren.
Mrs. Vergie L. Smith (dated Saturday, Dec. 27, 1997)
WADE -- Mrs. Vergie Langley Smith, 90, of Koa Wade-Stedman Road, formerly of Hope Mills, died Wednesday in Bethesda Health Care Facility.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in Hamilton-Porter Funeral Home chapel in Hope Mills by the Rev. Jim Betts. Burial will be in Gilmont Cemetery in Hope Mills.
Mrs. Smith is survived by a son, Edward M. Smith of Wade; a brother, Dewey Langley of Bladenboro; 12 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and 20 great-great-grandchildren.

ROCKINGHAM -- Mrs. Margaret Covington, 84, of 804 Long Drive died Thursday in Windsor House.

Earl S. Sloan Sr. (dated Saturday, Dec. 27, 1997)
SANFORD -- Earl Shaw Sloan Sr., 87, of 2610 Sloan Lane died Thursday in his home.
He was a building contractor and a member and former trustee of Salem Presbyterian Church.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in Salem Presbyterian Church by the Revs. Robert Bradham and Melinda King. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Mr. Sloan is survived by his wife, Anna T. Sloan; two sons, Earl Sloan Jr. and Benny Sloan, both of Sanford; two daughters, Edna Sharpe and Sandra Trogdon, both of Sanford; a sister, Jessie Griffin of Sanford; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

William W. Bishop Jr. (dated Saturday, Dec. 27, 1997)
SANFORD -- William Watson Bishop Jr., 69, of 8805 Deep River Road died Thursday in Central Carolina Hospital.
He was a Navy veteran of World War II and a member of the Elks and Lions clubs.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. today in Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. Gordon West. Burial will be in Gilmont Cemetery in Hope Mills.
Mr. Bishop is survived by a son, Bill Bishop of Greensboro; a daughter, Allyson Atkinson of Wendell; a sister, Louise B. Atkins of Deep River; a brother, Eugene P. Bishop of Sanford; and five grandchildren.
The family will receive friends today from 10 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home and at other times at the home.

SANFORD -- Andrew Curtis Hales, 80, of 7945 White Hill Road died Thursday in Central Carolina Hospital.
The funeral will be conducted at 4 p.m. Sunday in Ephesus Baptist Church by the Rev. Robert Morrison. Burial will be in Buffalo Cemetery.
Mr. Hales is survived by his wife, Lillie F. Hales; a daughter, Helen H. Collins of Sanford; a sister, Alice Breedlove of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; and one grandchild.

CLINTON -- Ms. Barbara Leak, 87, of 1118 Russell St., died Friday in Southwood Nursing Home.

Mrs. Margaret D. Glover (dated Saturday, Dec. 27, 1997)
ERWIN -- Mrs. Margaret Dupree Glover, the wife of Erwin’s Mayor, James E. Glover, died Friday after a seven year battle with cancer.
Mrs. Glover was active in religious, civic, political and social affairs until her illness. She was Erwin’s Woman of the Year for 1974-75 and Shrinette of the Year in 1991. Mrs. Glover was president of the Dunn Shrinette Club. Mrs. Glover was a Sunday school director and Circle Leader and worked with the Harnett County Council on Ageing.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in Erwin First Baptist Church by the Rev. Jerry Hicks. Burial will be in Erwin Memorial Park.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Glover is survived by a son, Barry Glover of Erwin; her mother, Bessie M. Dupree of Erwin; three sisters, Edith D. Sessoms of Dunn, Elizabeth D. Moore of Erwin and Peggy D. Murfee of Richmond, Va.; a brother, Allen S. Dupree of Tarboro; and two grandsons.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Price Funeral Home and at other times at the home, 202 S. Eighth St., Erwin.
Charlie Jackson (dated Saturday, Dec. 27, 1997)
SANFORD -- Charlie Jackson, 70, of Sanford, died Thursday in Central Carolina Hospital.

Mrs. Nannie S. Mickey (dated Saturday, Dec. 27, 1997)
LAKE WACCAMAW -- Mrs. Nannie Ruth Short Mickey, 89, of 914 Canal Cove Road died Thursday in Columbus County Hospital in Whiteville.
She was a homemaker and a member of Lake Waccamaw Baptist Church.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in First Baptist Church. Burial will be in Lake Waccamaw Cemetery.
Mrs. Mickey is survived by two sons, Richard F. Mickey Jr. of Lake Waccamaw and Bobbie J. Mickey of Charleston, S.C.; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

WEST END -- Mrs. Rosa Lee Gillespie Malloy, 70, of West End died Tuesday in FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.
The funeral will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in Cedar Grove Baptist Church in West End. Arrangements are being handled by Jones & Little Funeral Services in Aberdeen.
Mrs. Malloy is survived by two sisters, Annie M. Goins and Mary Smitherman, both of West End; and five brothers, Howard Gillespie, Roland Gillespie, James Gillespie, and Johnny Gillespie, all of West End, and David Gillespie of Eastwood.
