ROWLAND -- Mrs. Minnie Bell Thomas, 63, of Route 2, Box 50, died Friday in Scotland Memorial Hospital in Laurinburg.

Murdock E. Kelly Jr. (dated Saturday, Dec. 27, 1997)
SOUTHERN PINES -- Murdock Edward Kelly Jr., 56, of Southern Pines died Wednesday in St. Joseph of the Pines nursing home.
Mr. Kelly is survived by four sisters, Mary Marsh and Effie Morrison, both of Carthage, Juanita Sims of New York, and Annie Johnson of Southern Pines; six brothers, John D. Kelly of Eastwood, Sam Kelly of Aberdeen, Alex “Robert” Kelly of Carthage, Tom Kelly of New York, Pete Kelly of Durham, and George Kelly of Hoffman.
The public will be received Sunday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Purcell Funeral Home. The family will be present after 3 p.m.
Clarence Brown (dated Saturday, Dec. 27, 1997)
Retired Army Sgt. Clarence Brown, 82, of 112 Enoch St., Fayetteville, died Tuesday in his home.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in Smith Chapel Free Will Baptist Church by Elder Elijah Fulcher III. Burial will be in Rockfish Memorial Park.
Mr. Brown is survived by his wife, Viola Brown; a daughter, Mattie L. Strong of Wilmington; four brothers, Leroy Brown of Wilmington, and Benjamin Scott, James Scott and Charlone Scott, all of Leland; two sisters, Daisy M. Scott and Elizabeth McDonald, both of Leland; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the home. The public will be received today from 1 to 8 p.m. at Wiseman Mortuary.
Leroy Council (dated Saturday, Dec. 27, 1997)
WINSTON-SALEM -- Leroy Council, 94, of Winston-Salem, formerly of Lumberton, died Wednesday in his home.
The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. today in Saints Home United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Local arrangements are being handled by McMillan Funeral Home of Lumberton.
Mr. Council is survived by two sisters, Elizabeth Singletary of Lumberton and Sallie Early of Richmond, Va.

ROWLAND -- Nick Locklear of Route 1 died Friday in Duke University Medical Center in Durham.

Thomas Cooney (dated Sunday, Dec. 28, 1997)
Retired Army Sgt. 1st Class Thomas Cooney, 64, of 4707 Bent Pine Drive, Fayetteville, died Wednesday in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.
He was a retired state director of Moose International of South Carolina.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in Reeves Funeral Home chapel by Chaplain J.O. Jernigan. Burial with full military honors will be in Main Post Cemetery on Fort Bragg.
Mr. Cooney is survived by his wife, Bonnie D. Cooney; four sons, John Cooney of Belmont, Joe Cooney of Charlotte, Jeff Cooney of Fayetteville and Jason Cooney of Lancaster, S.C.; three daughters, Cathy Anthony of Palmer, Ark., Candy Thompson of Midland and Carla McCaskill of England; a sister, Catherine Kruk of Nanticoke, Penn.; and 11 grandchildren.
The family will receive friends today from 2 to 5 p.m. at Reeves Funeral Home in Hope Mills.

CLINTON -- Ms. Barbara Leake, 87, of 1118 Russell St. died Friday in Southwood Nursing Home.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in Clinton Chapel AME Zion Church by the Rev. John Melvin. Burial will be in Sandhill Cemetery.
Ms. Leake is survived by two sisters, Katherine Hargrove and Ethel Best, both of Clinton; and four grandchildren.

Miss G. Montgomery (dated Sunday, Dec. 28, 1997)
ANGIER -- Miss Geraldine Montgomery, 43, of 109 Knollwood Court died Thursday in her home.
The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Dafford Funeral Home chapel in Angier by the Rev. Naomi Douglas. Burial will be in Angier Community Cemetery.
Miss Montgomery is survived by three daughters, Donnaphine Rogers and Susan A. Martin, both of Angier, and Annette L. Maxwell of Lillington; a son, David L. Chalmers of Cameron; two sisters, Mildred Thomas and Francine McKinnon, both of Angier; and six brothers, Ray Lockamy, Roy L. Montgomery, Wallace Montgomery, Sammy Montgomery, Donnie Montgomery and Bobby Montgomery, all of Angier.
The public will be received Monday from 3 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

ROSEBORO -- Mrs. Elvia Draughon, 81, of Route 2 died Saturday in Sampson Regional Medical Center in Clinton.

Alvin K. Charles (dated Sunday, Dec. 28, 1997)
Retired Army Col. Alvin Kenneth Charles, 81, of 2413 Dartmouth Drive, Fayetteville, died Wednesday in his home.
He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean and Vietnam wars and retired after 35 years of military service.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in Main Post Cemetery on Fort Bragg.
Mr. Charles is survived by two sons, Thomas Charles of Greenville and Jim Charles of Spartanburg, S.C.; two daughters, Pamela Franklin of Charlotte and Mary C. Miles of Fayetteville; and six grandchildren.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home.

Mr. Surles is survived by his wife, Juanita G. Surles of the home; two sons, James C. Surles of Newark, N.J., and Jason L. Surles of the home; two daughters, Ja’mala L. Surles and Veronica Green, both of the home; his father, W.C. Surles of Angier; a sister, Beatrice McEachern of Angier; five brothers, Bobby L. Surles and George K. Surles, both of Coats, John F. Surles and Glenn E. Surles, both of Raleigh, and Willie J. Surles of Burgaw; and two grandchildren.

CLINTON -- Cary Speller, 82, of of 921 Southwest Blvd., died Friday in Guardian Care Nursing Center in Kenansville.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in First Baptist Church by the Rev. Marvin T. Clowney. Burial will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park.
Mr. Speller is survived by a daughter, Jacqueline Speller of Washington, D.C.; six sisters, Hattie Hutt of Laurelton, N.Y., Lucille Hunt, Wilma Chamblee and Zenobia Tomlinson, all of Ahoskie, Maggie Speller of Alexandria, Va. and Carlise Wilson of Amityville, N.Y.; and two grandchildren.

Benjamin J. Reichert (dated Sunday, Dec. 28, 1997)
Retired Army 1st Sgt. Benjamin John Reichert, 69, of 1865 Ashton Road, Fayetteville, died Thursday.
He was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars.

Mr. Reichert is survived by two sons, Richard E. Reichert and Marlowe A. Reichert, both of Fayetteville; his mother, Roma Reichert of Plymouth, Wis.; and one grandson.

LAURINBURG -- Ms. Betty “Gerri” Fowler, 45, of Gill Street died Thursday in Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, Ga.
She worked for Pic Kwik in North Carolina.

Ms. Fowler is survived by a son, Mitch Baxley of Augusta; a daughter, Melissa Baxley of Laurinburg; two brothers, Kenneth Fowler of Wagram and Charles Fowler of Laurel Hill; and two grandchildren.
