STEDMAN -- Retired Air Force Staff Sgt. Denver Johnson, 71, of Stedman died Sunday in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville.

Arrangements will be announced by Highland Funeral Service & Crematory in Fayetteville.

Michael E. Hill Jr. (dated Tuesday, Dec. 30, 1997)

Michael E. Hill Jr., 21, of 1099 Pleasant Oak Drive, Fayetteville, died Friday in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. today in Paye Funeral Home chapel.

Mr. Hill is survived by his mother, Cynthia Smith of the home; his father and stepmother, Michael and Grace Hill; a sister, Yontia Hill of the home; two brothers, William Smith and Darryl Donaldson, both of Fayetteville; two stepbrothers; one stepsister; his maternal grandparents, Willie and Lucille Smith of Brunswick, Ga.; and his paternal grandmother, Georgia Hill of Savannah, Ga.

James B. Chesnut (dated Tuesday, Dec. 30, 1997)

RED SPRINGS -- James Buford Chesnut, 79, of 118 Brooks Ave., died Monday in Southeastern Regional Medical Center in Lumberton.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Red Springs Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. David Hodge. Burial will be in Alloway Cemetery.

Mr. Chesnut is survived by his wife, Estlle S. Chesnut of the home; three daughters, Linda G. Horne of Red Springs, Sybil Chamberlain of Fairburn, Ga., and Donna Garber of Concord; three sisters, Elvie Lawrance and Velma Whitaker, both of Bonifay, Fla., and Flora Moore of Marianna, Fla.; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Red Springs Funeral Home.

Charles D. Gilmore (dated Tuesday, Dec. 30, 1997)

Charles D. Gilmore of 6105 Kimbrook Drive, Fayetteville, died Saturday.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in New Hope Baptist Church in Wade by Pastors Edward Jones and Larry D. McLaughlin. Burial will be in Lafayette Memorial Park.

Mr. Gilmore is survived by his wife, Ireatha B. Gilmore of the home; a daughter, Tonya Gilmore of the home; a son, Charles W. Gilmore of the home; two sisters, Mary F. Davis of Fayetteville and Carolyn Farmer of Charlotte; a brother, Leroy Gilmore of Pittsboro; and two grandchildren.

The public will be received tonight from 5 to 8 p.m. at Wiseman Mortuary. The family will receive friends at the home.

Mrs. Sallie D. White (dated Tuesday, Dec. 30, 1997)

ROSEBORO -- Mrs. Sallie Durham White, 64, of 2150 Huntley School Road died Saturday.

She was a teacher at Rockfish Elementary School in Hope Mills.

The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday in Clinton Pentecostal Holiness Church by the Revs. T. Elwood, K.E. White and David Butts. Burial will be in Sunrise Memorial Gardens in Salemburg.

Mrs. White is survived by her husband, the Rev. Thad M. White of the home; a daughter, Beth Rodriguez of Fayetteville; a son, Ritchie White of Raleigh; five sisters, Helen S. Strobel and Marie S. Davis, both of Goldsboro, Dorothy L. Shalloup of Norfolk, Va., Lillian S. Wade of LaGrange and Ruby Barnes of Black Creek; two brothers, Robert M. Sauls of Winston-Salem and Billy Sauls of Siler City; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Butler Funeral Home and at other times at the home.

Mrs. Noble S. Jacobs (dated Tuesday, Dec. 30, 1997)

LUMBERTON -- Mrs. Noble Mae Sampson Jacobs, 74, of 2903 Hedge Drive died Sunday in Southeastern Regional Medical Center.

She was a member of Deep Branch Baptist Church and a homemaker.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Biggs Funeral Home chapel by the Revs. James A. Hunt and James M. Bell. Burial will be in Lumbee Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Jacobs is survived by a son, Woodrow Jacobs of the home; two daughters, Joanne Ransom and Vickie R. Jacobs, both of Lumberton; a brother, Chason Sampson of Jacksonville; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at the funeral home and at other times at the home.

Mrs. Elvia Draughon (dated Tuesday, Dec. 30, 1997)

ROSEBORO -- Mrs. Elvia Draughon, 81, of Route 2, died Saturday in Sampson Regional Medical Center in Clinton.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Elisabeth Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Jones. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Draughon is survived by a sister, Selene Hobbs of Salemburg.

The public will be received today from 2 to 7 p.m. at Dafford Funeral Home of Dunn.

Mrs. Mary J. Greer (dated Tuesday, Dec. 30, 1997)

CALHOUN, Ga. -- Mrs. Mary Jeanne Greer of Calhoun, formerly of Fayetteville, N.C., died Monday in Columbia-Redmond Regional Medical Center in Rome.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Overlook Cemetery in Eden, N.C. Arrangements are being handled by Fair Funeral Home of Eden.

Mrs. Greer is survived by two sons, John Greer of Hampton and David Greer of Eden; four daughters, Claudia Colter of Winston-Salem, N.C., Eileen Melton of Calhoun, Susan Jones of New London, N.C., and Anne Manis of Mount Eden, Ky.; 18 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Elba L. Bowie (dated Tuesday, Dec. 30, 1997)

Mrs. Elba L. Bowie, 71, of Fayetteville, died Sunday in Catawba Memorial Hospital in Hickory.

Arrangements will be announced by Highland Funeral Service & Crematory.

Mrs. Etta G. Humphrey (dated Tuesday, Dec. 30, 1997)

ST. PAULS -- Mrs. Etta G. Humphrey, 88, of St. Pauls died Friday in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Pleasant Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Bobby McKoy. Burial will be in the King family cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by McKoy and Sons Mortuary.

Mrs. Humphrey is survived by four sons, Edward Humphrey and Leon Humphrey, both of St. Pauls, Thomas Humphrey of Amityville, N.Y., and John Humphrey of Raleigh; two daughters, Doris Wilson of Chapel Hill and Annie L. Perry of Eagle River, Alaska; a brother, the Rev. Fred D. King of St. Pauls; two sisters, Bertha Humphrey of St. Pauls and Mable Lang of Greenville; 25 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8 at the church.

Mrs. Ada R. Melvin (dated Tuesday, Dec. 30, 1997)

Mrs. Ada R. Melvin, 99, of Fayetteville, died Monday in Bethesda Health Care Facility in Eastover.

Arrangements will be announced by Wiseman Mortuary.

The family will receive friends at the home of Caroline Carr, Route 1, Box 474, Fayetteville.

Nrs. Arpha Brown (dated Tuesday, Dec. 30, 1997)

ST. PAULS -- Mrs. Arpha Brown, 85, of U.S. 301 South, died Sunday in Southeastern Regional Medical Center in Lumberton.

Arrangements will be announced by McMillan Funeral Home of Lumberton.

Ms. Frances A. Mason (dated Wednesday, Dec. 31, 1997)

AUTRYVILLE -- Ms. Frances Adella Mason, 73, of 181 Hunterview Drive died Monday in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville.

She was a registered nurse and served as a Pink Lady at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center and a member of St. Patricks Catholic Church in Fayetteville.

A graveside service will be conducted at 9 a.m. Thursday in the Main Post Cemetery on Fort Bragg by Father John Durbin.

Ms. Mason is survived by a daughter, Marsha Horne of Stedman; two sons, Robert Mason of Lexington, Ky. and Michael Mason of Las Cruces, N.M.; and three grandchildren.

The family will receive friends tonight from 5 to 6:30 at Rogers & Breece Funeral Home in Fayetteville.

Mrs. Audrey M. Blalock (dated Wednesday, Dec. 31, 1997)

HOPE MILLS -- Mrs. Audrey Faye Maynor Blalock, 40, of 3022 Woolard Drive died Monday in her home.

She was a member of Calvary Assembly of God Church and a Sunday school teacher.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday in Calvary Assembly of God by the Revs. Tony Legear and Mike White. Burial will be in Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery in Spring Lake.

Mrs. Blalock is survived by her husband, Robert D. Blalock of Hope Mills; two daughters, Melissa Blalock and Deana Blalock, both of Hope Mills; three sons, Brandon Blalock, Joshua Blalock and Jeremiah Blalock, all of Hope Mills; her parents, Roy and Lula Maynor of Hope Mills; two brothers, Roy E. Maynor of Baltimore and Kenneth Maynor of Berkeley, Calif.; and two sisters, L. Carol Brooks of Baltimore and Sheila Valcarcel of Riverside, Calif.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Rogers & Breece Funeral Home in Fayetteville and at other times at 3014 Woolard Drive, Hope Mills.

Bert G. Davis (dated Wednesday, Dec. 31, 1997)

Bert G. Davis, 78, of 7216 Shady Grove Lane, Fayetteville, died Thursday in his home.

Burial will be at a later date in Dothan Memorial Park in Dothan, Ala. Arrangements are being handled by Cunningham and Sons Mortuary.

Mr. Davis is survived by a son, James R. Davis of Fayetteville; two grandsons; two step-grandchildren; two step-great-grandsons.

Mrs. Lucy H. Tolson (dated Wednesday, Dec. 31, 1997)

WHISPERING PINES -- Mrs. Lucy Harris Tolson, 84, of Whispering Pines died Tuesday in FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.

Arrangements will be announced by Powell Funeral Home and Crematory of Southern Pines.

William W. Pitts Jr. (dated Wednesday, Dec. 31, 1997)

Retired Army Staff Sgt. William Wesley Pitts Jr., 70, of 6937 Radnor St., Fayetteville, died Monday in Womack Army Medical Center on Fort Bragg.

He was a retired civil service purchasing contractor.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in Bible Baptist Church in Hope Mills by the Revs. Jay Foster and Paul Presley. Burial with full military honors will be in Main Post Cemetery on Fort Bragg. Arrangements are being handled by Rogers & Breece Funeral Home.

Mr. Pitts is survived by his wife, Gerda E. Pitts of the home; three sons, William Pitts III of Hopewell, Va., Larry M. Pitts of Page, Ariz., and James E. Pitts of Albuquerque, N.M.; three daughters, Sherry P. Turner of Walstonburg, Sally P. Gray of Page and Patricia A. Pitts, both of Page; two sisters, Betty Huff of Oakdale, Calif., and Ester Taylor of Las Vegas; a brother, George Pitts of Austin, Texas; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the church.
