LAUREL HILL -- Mrs. Rachel Pearl Johnson Fairley, 53, of 22580 Bunch Road died Monday in Scotland Memorial Hospital in Laurinburg.

Arrangements will be announced by Jackson Funeral Home of Laurinburg.

Mrs. Annie J. Davis (dated Tuesday, Dec. 9, 1997)

PATERSON, N.J. -- Mrs. Annie L. Johnson Davis, of Paterson, formerly of Laurel Hill, N.C., died Saturday.

Arrangements will be announced by Jackson Funeral Home of Laurinburg, N.C.

Lester D. Smiling (dated Tuesday, Dec. 9, 1997)

MAXTON -- Lester David Smiling, 73, of Smiling Road died Sunday in Southeastern Regional Medical Center in Lumberton.

He was a farmer.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Union Light Baptist Church by the Rev. Romie Revels. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mr. Smiling is survived by his wife, Bertha Smiling; a son, Davis Smiling of Maxton; three daughters, Margie J. Smiling and Teresa K. Locklear, both of the home, and Jane Locklear of Wagram; a brother, Lonnie Smiling of Maxton; four sisters, Leattie M. Oxendine, Virginia Hunt and Ruth Goins, all of Maxton, and Bertha Smith of Red Springs; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Butler Funeral Service in Laurinburg.

Mrs. Lela ‘Bobbie’ Bobbitt (dated Tuesday, Dec. 9, 1997)

ABERDEEN -- Mrs. Lela Dunn “Bobbie” Bobbitt, 67, of Aberdeen died Monday in her home.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Page Memorial United Methodist Church by the Revs. Julian Scott and Wilbur Jackson. Burial will be in Bethesda Cemetery.

Mrs. Bobbitt is survived by her husband, David G. Bobbitt; a daughter, Barbara B. Williams of Aberdeen; a sister, Edna D. Donathan of Aberdeen; her mother, Ina G. Dunn of Pinehurst; and one grandson.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Powell Funeral Home in Southern Pines.

Franklin F. McRae (dated Tuesday, Dec. 9, 1997)

BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- Franklin Foster McRae, 58, of Brooklyn, formerly of Wagram, N.C., died Sunday.

LAURINBURG -- Mrs. Pearlie Williamson of 1004 McGirt Bridge Road died Monday.

MARSTON -- Russell Ewing, 77, of 25260 Newton Road died Monday in Autumn Care of Raeford nursing home.

Arrangements will be announced by Morris Funeral Home of Laurinburg.

Richard P. Cherry (dated Tuesday, Dec. 9, 1997)

LAKE WACCAMAW -- Richard P. Cherry, 76, of 206 Chauncey Town Road died Dec. 4 in his home.

The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday in Second St. Paul Baptist Church in Hallsboro by the Rev. Joseph Bryant. Burial will be in Mt. Hebron Memorial Park in Hallsboro.

Mr. Cherry is survived by a son, Richard M. Cherry; and four daughters, Hawallion Cherry and Dorothy Marsh, both of Irvington, N.J., Palm L. Little of Newark, N.J., and Margaret Dewitt of Conway, S.C.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6 to 7 p.m. at Peoples Funeral Home in Whiteville.

Willie Thurman (dated Tuesday, Dec. 9, 1997)

GAITHERSBURG, Md. -- Willie Thurman, 52, of Gaithersburg, formerly of Hallsboro, N.C., died Sunday in UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill, N.C.

Lonnie Davis (dated Tuesday, Dec. 9, 1997)

FAIR BLUFF -- Lonnie Davis, 64, of 350 Rogers St. died Monday in Columbus County Hospital in Whiteville.

Rufus C. McMillian (dated Tuesday, Dec. 9, 1997)

CLARKTON -- Rufus C. McMillian, 84, of 73 McMillian Drive died Monday in Bladen County Hospital in Elizabethtown.

Arrangements will be announced by Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville.

Dwight A. White (dated Tuesday, Dec. 9, 1997)

Dwight Alston White of 205 Sharpsburg Road, Fayetteville, died Thursday.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in St. Paul AME Church in North Charleston, S.C. Burial will be private. Arrangements are being handled by Fielding Home for Funerals in Charleston.

Mr. White is survived by two daughters, Angela White of Oklahoma and Jacquelyn White of Fayetteville; a son, Anthony White of Oklahoma; a stepdaughter, Tina Berg of Fayetteville; his father, Frank Glover; three brothers, Frank Glover, Tyrone Glover and Kevin Glover; two sisters, Rita Faison and Jacquetta Carpio; two stepsisters, Emma Means and Annie Gadsen; and several grandchildren.

R. Max Abbott (dated Tuesday, Dec. 9, 1997)

Dr. R. Max Abbott, 71, of 203 Rush Road, Fayetteville, died Sunday in Duke University Medical Center in Durham.

He retired as superintendent of Fayetteville city schools.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Haymount United Methodist Church by the Rev. William E. Braswell. Burial will be in Lafayette Memorial Park.

Mr. Abbott is survived by his wife, Tommie Abbott of the home; a daughter, Leslie Abbott of Raleigh; a son, R.M. Abbott Jr. of Fayetteville; and one granddaughter.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home.

Grover C. King (dated Tuesday, Dec. 9, 1997)

CLINTON -- Grover Clarence King, 89, of 311 E. Johnson St. died Monday in Sampson Regional Medical Center.

He was a member of Hillsberry Free Will Baptist Church and a retired used car dealer.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Royal-Hall Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. Carl Thigpen. Burial will be in Grandview Memorial Gardens.

Mr. King is survived by his wife, Ada K. King; a daughter, Deloris Bonpietro of Saddlebrook, N.J.; three sons, Clarence H. King of Berryville, Va., Eddie King of Greensboro and Carlton King of Fredricksburg, Va.; three sisters, Hilda K. Warren of Faison, Doris K. Hargrove of California and Jeanette K. Davis of Raleigh; four brothers, Estel King of Faison, Kermit King of Turkey, Charles King of California and Donald King of San Diego; 14 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at the funeral home and at other times at the home.

Mrs. Louise D. Mayo (dated Tuesday, Dec. 9, 1997)

Mrs. Louise Dixon Mayo of Fayetteville died Monday.

A graveside service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Fayetteville Memorial Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Rogers & Breece Funeral Home.

Talmadge C. Tyler (dated Tuesday, Dec. 9, 1997)

Talmadge Carlise Tyler, 65, of 2661 Wingate Road, Fayetteville, died Saturday in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Cape Fear Baptist Church by the Rev. Jerry Groves. Burial will be in Cumberland Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Tyler is survived by his wife, Betty J. Tyler of the home; two daughters, Bettina D. Tyler of the home and Peggy J. Wood of St. Pauls; two sons, Brandon C. Tyler of Hope Mills and Kenneth E. Jacobs of Fayetteville; a sister, Jeannette Hunt of Maxton; and six brothers, Wilbert Tyler of Shannon, Redell Tyler and Marvin Tyler, both of Maxton, Elwood Tyler of Clinton, Lannie R. Tyler of Red Springs and Ronald Tyler of Fayetteville.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Rogers & Breece Funeral Home.

Miss Leona D. Smith (dated Tuesday, Dec. 9, 1997)

WINTERVILLE -- Miss Leona Delores Smith, 57, of Winterville, formerly of Cumberland County, died Monday in Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday in Foursquare Church in Greenville. Arrangements are being handled by Wilkerson Funeral Home of Greenville.

Miss Smith is survived by a brother, Tony Smith of Winterville; and two sisters, Betty S. Briggs of Crestview, Fla., and Dorothy S. Boughnou of Fort Walton Beach, Fla.

Ms. Vanessa H. Jacobs (dated Tuesday, Dec. 9, 1997)

ROWLAND -- Ms. Vanessa Hunt Jacobs, 38, of 540 Union School Road died Monday in her home.

Arrangements will be announced by Floyd Funeral Services of Fairmont.

Norman ‘Buster’ Murphy (dated Tuesday, Dec. 9, 1997)

HARRELLS -- Norman “Buster” Murphy, 84, of 6346 N.C. 210 East died Monday in Sampson Regional Medical Center in Clinton.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Murphy’s Chapel AME Church by the Revs. McAfee Bannerman and Johnny B. Murphy. Burial will be in the Murphy family cemetery.

Mr. Murphy is survived by his wife, Georgiana T. Murphy; two daughters, Shirley M. Turnage of Elizabeth City and Melba J. Harris of Herndon, Va.; two sons, Norman D. Murphy and Ronald G. Murphy, both of Harrells; a brother, Loston Murphy of Harrells; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The public will be received today from 1 to 8 p.m. at Summerville-Boykin Mortuary in Garland. The family will receive friends at the home of Norman D. Murphy, 6306 N.C. 210 East, Harrells.
