NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- James L. Prevatte of Nashville, formerly of Fairmont, N.C., died Nov. 21.
The funeral was conducted Monday in Harpeth Hills Funeral Home by the Rev. Peter Eyes. Burial with military honors was in Harpeth Hills Memory Gardens.
Mr. Prevatte is survived by his wife, Jean Prevatte of Nashville; a daughter, Carolyn Prevatte of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.; a son, Stephen Prevatte of Nashville; a brother, Chick Prevatte of McDonalds, N.C.; and two grandchildren.
Mrs. Lavern R. Lawrence (dated Friday, Nov. 28, 1997)
STEDMAN -- Mrs. Lavern Reaves Lawrence, 88, of 6617 Morning Glory Drive died Tuesday in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in First Baptist Church in Chadbourn by the Rev. Jessie Timmons. Burial will be in Belvue Cemetery in Chadbourn. Arrangements are being handled by Tucker & Sons Funeral Home of Fayetteville.
Mrs. Lawrence is survived by two daughters, Swannie Reaves and Lois Lesane, both of Chadbourn; a son, the Rev. Adolphus Lawrence of Stedman; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren.
The public will be received Saturday from 9 to 11 a.m. at the church.

HOPE MILLS -- M.J. Taylor, 73, of Hope Mills died Thursday in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville.

Ray C. Williams (dated Friday, Nov. 28, 1997)
SALEMBURG -- Ray Charles Williams, 37, of 798 Lakewood School Road died Nov. 22 in Sampson Regional Medical Center in Clinton.
The funeral will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in Evergreen Holiness Church by Elder Joseph Moore. Burial will be in Bearskin Church cemetery.
Mr. Williams is survived by three daughters, Jenay Williams and Barbie Williams, both of Dunn, and Pamela Lamb of Maryland; a son, Rico Williams of Salemburg; his mother, Alice P. Williams of Salemburg; three sisters, Hazel Jones and Kathleen McNeil, both of Salemburg, and Alice Williams of Clinton; and three brothers, Roy L. Williams and Jackie Williams, both of Salemburg, and Elbert Boykin of Newburgh, N.Y.
The public will be received today from noon to 6 p.m. at Brock Memorial & Worley Funeral Home in Clinton.
Mrs. Eva J. Bryant (dated Friday, Nov. 28, 1997)
CLINTON -- Mrs. Eva Jacobs Bryant, 74, of 19-A Winterwood Apartments died Sunday in Sampson Regional Medical Center.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses by Brother Howard Kelly. Burial will be in the Jacobs family cemetery.
Mrs. Bryant is survived by two daughters, Jean Beckford and Sharon Rogers, both of Clinton; three sons, Marvin Jacobs and George Jacobs, both of Clinton, and Floyd Jacobs of Chicopee, Mass.; two sisters, Mary Burgess of Coats and Mattie Rogers of Jonesboro, Ga.; two brothers, William Blackmon of Clinton and Morris Blackmon of Jonesboro; 18 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
The public will be received today from 1 to 6 p.m. at Brock Memorial & Worley Funeral Home.
Elizabeth Arrowsmith (dated Friday, Nov. 28, 1997)
FLORENCE, S.C. -- Mrs. Elizabeth Young Arrowsmith, 74, of 423 Winston St., formerly of Columbus County, N.C., died Wednesday in Florence Hospital.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in Mount Hope Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home.
Mrs. Arrowsmith is survived by a son, Johnny D. Young of Lake Waccamaw, N.C.; and three grandchildren.

LILLINGTON -- A. Roosevelt Smith, 65, of Lillington died Wednesday.

Mr. Smith is survived by two daughters, Rebecca S. Carroll of Lillington and Sharon S. Carroll of Willow Springs; a son, Alvin R. Smith Jr. of Willow Springs; two brothers, Bobby Smith and James L. Smith, both of Lillington; four sisters, Lillian Moore of Mamers, Christine Vinson of Autryville, and Jean Upchurch and Vivian Rainbolt, both of Olivia; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Henry is survived by several nieces and nephews.

ELIZABETHTOWN -- Mrs. Ora Davis Singletary, 84, of Elizabethtown died Thursday in Bladen County Hospital.

Mrs. Singletary is survived by two daughters, Judith S. McLaurin of Fayetteville and Doris S. Vines of Elizabethtown; two sons, Rowland J. Singletary Jr. of Goose Creek, S.C., and Glenn Singletary of Whiteville; two sisters, Sarah D. Singletary of Lumberton and Margaret D. Hester of Bladenboro; three brothers, George Davis of Duluth, Minn., and Luther Davis and Ewen Davis, both of Bladenboro; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

EFFINGHAM, S.C. -- Mrs. Naomi Spivey Hooks, 87, of Effingham, formerly of Chadbourn, N.C., died Wednesday in Commander Nursing Center in Florence.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in Chadbourn Memorial Cemetery in Chadbourn by the Revs. Merle Johnson and Joe Sellers.
Mrs. Hooks is survived by three sons, Robert D. Hooks Sr. of Effingham, Bruce Hooks of Stanfield and Edward C. Hooks of Monroe; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

ROCKY MOUNT -- Robert Charles Ballenger, 64, of 301 Mallory St. died Wednesday in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville.

Among Mr. Ballenger’s survivors is a daughter, Sonya B. Spejcher of Fayetteville.

WHITEVILLE -- L.A. Hinson, 74, of Whiteville died Wednesday.

Gurney E. McLaughlin (dated Friday, Nov. 28, 1997)
SANFORD -- Gurney Edward McLaughlin, 77, of 5001 Cardinal Circle died Wednesday in his home.
Mr. McLaughlin was retired from the Navy Reserves and was a member of the Sanford Rotary Club. He retired after 35 years from Havens & Emerson Consulting Engineers. Mr. McLaughlin was a member of the National Society of Professional Engineers, and the Professional Engineers of North Carolina, where he served as governor of the Fayetteville chapter for eight years.
A graveside service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday in Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery in Spring Lake.
Mr. McLaughlin is survived by his wife, Olive H. McLaughlin; a daughter, Susan Toukonen of Jefferson, Ohio; two sons, William McLaughlin of South Euclid, Ohio, and David McLaughlin of Cleveland; a sister, Louise Tansey of Contona, Italy; and five grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. at Rogers-Pickard Funeral Home.
