Minnie Hicks
Minnie Victoria Foreman "Bill" Hicks, of Albemarle, died Sunday, January 12, 2003, at Britthaven of Piedmont. She was 90. A funeral service was held January 16 at Porter Baptist Church with Rev. Yates Brooks and Rev. Fred Hopkins presiding. Burial was in the church cemetery in Norwood.

Mrs. Hicks was born January 15, 1912 in Stanly County. Her parents were Lilla Kimrey and Claude Livingston Foreman. She was a nurse at Stanly Memorial Hospital and was married icon to the late Lemmie Hicks. She was a member of Porter Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, John Hicks of Albemarle; two grand sons Larry Hicks and Roger Hicks and two great-grandsons, Joshua and Justin Hicks, all of Albemarle.

Valeria Hardister
Valeria Young Hardister, 81, of Badin, died January 11, 2003 at Stanly Memorial Hospital. A funeral service was held at Hartsell Funeral Home's Lefler Memorial Chapel with burial in Stanly Gardens of Memoru in Albemarle.

Mrs. Hardister ws born February 18, 1921 in Stanly County, the daughter of William Rogers and Elia Gertrude Penny Young. She was a housewife and member of Badin Baptist Church. She enjoyed sewing, crafts and golf.

Survivors include her husband, Allen Everette Hardister of Badin; a son, Roger Allen Hardister of Cairo, Egypt; two daughters, Penny Eudy of Locust and Debrah Lovan of Wilmington; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be sent to Badin Baptist Church, PO Box 337, Badin, NC 28009-0337.

Betty Jean Leonard Tucker
A service at Oak Grove Baptist Church was held on January 13 for Betty Jean Leonard Tucker, 69, of Albemarle. She died January 10,.2003 at Stanly Memorial. Hospital. Rev. Reece English presided and burial was in Fairview Memorial Park in Albemalre.

Me. Tucker was a 1951 graduate of Albemarle High School and was a member of the Oak Grove Baptist Church choir and The Master's Five church quartet.

Survivors include her husband, William H. "Bud" Tucker of Albemarle; two sons, Jimmy Leonard Tucker Sr., of Oakboro and Steven Douglas Tucker of Albemarle; a grandson, Jimmy Leonard Tucker Jr., and a great-grandson, Kameron Chase Tucker.

Memorials may be sent to Hospice of Stanly County, 960 North First Street, Albemarle, NC 28001.

Mabel Fraley
Mabel Herlocker Fraley, 77, of Albemarle, died January 8, 2003 at Forrest Oakes Healthcare Center in Albemarle. A funeral service was held January 11 at Fairview Baptist Church where she was a member. Rev. Delane Burris presided and burial was in anderson Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Albemarle.

Mrs. Fraley was born August 8, 1925 in Stanly County, the daughter of Walter Seymour and Jennie Prudence Laton Speights. She was a retired pharmacist technician at Eckerd Drug Company.

She was a member of the Anderson Grove Baptist Church Golden Yers Club. She was active in her Sunday School class at Fairview Baptist Church. She also sang in the choir and was an avid gardener. She was a member of Fairview Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Wayne Lafayette Fraley of the home; three sons, James Calvin Herlocker Jr. and wife Margaret; Thomas Eugene Herlocker and wife Patsy B., and Keith Craig Herlocker and ife Linda B., all of Albemarle; two daughters, Carolyn Herloocker Sides and late husband Butch Sides of Salisbury, and Linda H. Sides and husband Robert of Albemarle; two brothers, Roy Speights and Grover Speights, both of Albemarle; three sisters, Lillian Mauldin and Ozell Pigg, both of Albemarle and Betty Burr of Wadesboro; 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Mildred Nordan
Mildred Dickens Carrick "Tiny" Nordan, 86, of Badin, died January 9, 2003 at NC Lutheran Nursing Homes, Inc. A memorial service will be held January 19 at 3 pm at Badin Baptist Church with Rev. Dan Abernathy presiding. Burial will be private.

Mrs. Nordan was born August 6, 1916 in Moore County. Her parents were Thomas Henry and Ida Mae Dickens Carrick. She was married icon to the late Henry Lee Nordan.

She was employed with Alcoa, Badin as a laboratory technician during World War II and later retired as a textile worker. She was a graduate of Badin High School and was a member of the Badin Baptist Church for over 70 years. She was secretary of Sunday School for Badin Baptist Church for over 35 years and was also a mmber of the choir. She ws a charter member of the North Carolina Singing Americans of Stanly County.

Survivors include a sister, Miss Stella Mae Carrkck of Albemarle; a brother, Donald B. Carrick of Albemarle; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Betty Herlocker Nordan of Bethesda, Md.; a granddaughter, Mrs. Laura Nordan Gerbis of Phoenix, Az.; and a grandson, Jeff Nordan of New York, NY.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Badin Baptist Church, PO Box 337, Badin, NC 28009-0337.

Bessie Smith
Bessie Lee Herlocker Smith, 83, died December 8, 2002 at Stanly Memorial Hospital. A funeral service was held at Hartsell Funeral Home's Lefler Memorial Chapel with Elder Rom Kerley and Brother Mark Medlin presiding. Burial was in Highland Baptist Church cemetery in New London.

Mrs. Smith was born January 30, 1919 in Stanly County. Her parents were Lock Dean and Alice Jeanette Hatley Herlocker. She was a homemaker and a member of Highland Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Jethro Glenn Smith of New London; three sons, Dwight Franklin Smith of New London, Glenn Lee Smith and wife Linda R. of Monroe and Clifford Ray Smith of Richfield; two daughters, Nancy Jeannette Miller and husband of New London and Brenda Sue Poplin and husband of New London; two sisters, Leuine Smith of Albemarle and Annie Laura Freeman of Bolivia, N.C.; 10 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

Instead of sending flowers contribute directly to a worthy cause.

Hubert Barnes
Hubert Howard Barnes died December 8, 2002 at his home in Albemarle. He was 85. A funeral service was held at North Albemarle Baptist Church on December 11 with Dr. Grady Taylor presiding. Burial was in Fairview Memorial Park.

He was the son of Thomas J. and Ada Stallings Barnes and was born December 14, 1816. He was a retired employee of Service Distributing Company, Inc., and a member of North Albemarle Baptist Church. where he was a former church deacon. He was a Veteran of World War II serving in the United States Navy.

He is survived by his wife, Mildred Council Barnes of the home; one daughter, Trena B. Morris of Albemarle; two brothers, James Donald Barnes of Calusa, Calif., and Tommy Barnes of Badin; two sisters, Elinor Thomas of Sykesville, Md., and Gladys Southern of Elkin; and two grandchildren, grandson Rodney Morris of New London and granddaughter, Krystal Christopher of Matthews.

Rebecca Smith
A funeral service for Rebecca Geraldine Lomax Smith, 81, of Albemarle, was held December 12 at Plyler Baptist Church where she was a member.

Mrs. Smith died December 9, 2002 at Forest Oaks Healthcare Center in Albemarle. Burial was in the church cemetery and Rev. Alvin Melton presided.

She was born March 9, 1921 in Stanly County. daughter of George Henry and Pearlie Ethel Rogers Lomax. She was a homemaker. Memorials may be sent to Plyler Baptist Church organ fund, 25958 Austin Rd., Albemarle, N.C. 28001.

Her husband, Samuel Otto Smith died in 1989. Survivors include one son, William Roger Smith and wife Patsy of Albemarle; one daughter, Joyce Rhune and husband Lee of Albemarle; two brothers, Boyce Worth Lomax of Gold Hill and Wade W. (Tom) Lomax of Richfield; three sisters, Ruby G. Hatley of Albemarle; Hilda Frick of New London and Lois Goodman of Gold Hill; one granddaughter, Sharon Brown and husband Mark, and two grandchildren, Dylan Brown and Kris Honeycutt.

Lavada Paschal
Lavada Galloway Doby Paschal of Misenheimer, died December 7, 2002 at her home. She was 67. A funeral service was held December 9 at Hartsell Funeral Home's Lefler Memorial Chapel with Rev. Grady Taylor and Rev. Tony Parsons officiating. Burial was in Fairview Memorial Park, Albemarle.

Mrs. Paschal was born November 14, 1935 in Darlington County, S.C. Her parents were Toye E. "T.E." and Mazalee Chapman Doby Galloway. She was the owner of Whispering Pines, BBQ in Albemarle. She was a member of North Albemarle Baptist Church and was a Hospice volunteer.

Survivors include her husband, Eddie Paschal of Misenheimer; one son, Neil Doby of Albemarle; six brothers,. Bernard Galloway and Darrell Galloway, both of Rockwell, Lester Galloway and Earl Galloway, both of Richfield and Allen Galloway of Hartsville, S.C.; and four sisters, Helen G. Brady of Gold Hill, Gaynell G. Funderburk of Kannapolis and Edith G. Almond of Albemarle.

Jewell Burris
Jewell Louise Efird Burris, 79, of Oakboro died December 5, 2002. She was retired from Cannon Mills in Concord as a weaver. In her retireasndment she was employed at Rocky River Springs Fish House. She enjoyed cooking, gardening and fishing, and most of all she enjoyed being a loving mother and grandmother.

Her parents were Shuford Alonzo and Zula Hatley Efird . She was married icon to the late Julius Eugene Burris.

She is survived by her loving children, sons Julius "Buster" Burris Jr., of Locust, Boyd Burris of Oakboro, and Blaine Burris of Kannapoilis. Also by daughters Barbara burris Coley of Oakboro and Brenda Burris Davis of Albemarle.

She is also survived by one brother, Kermit Efird of Norwood, five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Her funeral service was held December 8 at Hartsell Funeral Home's Lefler Memorial Chapel with Elder Richard Almond and Rev. David Alexander presiding. The eulogy was by Tammy Nelson, her niece.

Memorials may be made to Bear Creek Primitive Baptist Church cemetery fund, in care of Jimmy Dunn, 200 Holt Road, Albemarle, N.C. 28001.

Interment was in Bear Creek Primitive Baptist Church cemetery.
