Charles Hough
Charles Allen Hough, 74, died December 7, 2002 at his home in Midland. A funeral service was held December 10 at Bethel United Methodist Church, in Midland. with Rev. Rex Gibbs presiding.

Mr. Hough was born August 8, 1928, the son of Charles Presley and Mamie Estelle Newell Hough.

He was a Realtor with Don Hyler Realty, Concord. He was also a member of the Lions Club in Midland. He was a Sunday School teacher for the Danny Gray Sunday School class.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Frances Hough of the home; a son, William Allen and wife Jackie Hough of Charlotte; two daughters, Teresa Beth and husband Jasp Koestal of Waterloo, Belgium and Pamela June and husband John Brock of Hickory; two grandsons, Johnathan Stewart Hough and Noah Allen Hough, both of Charlotte; and one sister, Barbara Hough Lane of Concord.

Billy Joe Morton
A funeral service for Billy Joe Morton, 74, of Richard-Sandy Road, Oakboro was held Monday, October 7 at Aquadale Baptist Church, Rev. Robert Ellis and Rev. Tony Allen officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Mr. Morton died on October 5, 2002 at Northeast Medical Center. He was born February 13, 1928, in Stanly County to Rosa Smith and George Ellis Morton.

Mr. Morton was self-employed as a building contractor and served in Korea in the Army.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Arthur Morton and Ray Leamon Morton.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Orene Allen Morton of Oakboro; daughters, Mrs. Amy Michelle Miles of Kannapolis, Mrs. Rita Elaine Lykke of Oakboro, Mrs. Lydia Jo Parker of Eden; brothers, Reece Morton of Oakboro, Vance Morton of Locust, Warren Morton of Davidson, Bruce Morton of Polkton, and Robert Morton of Oakboro; sisters, Mrs. Rachel Little of Kannapolis and Mrs. Carrie Gilbert of Oakboro; grandchildren, Hans Lykke, Joanna Lykke, Ricky Parker, Maverick Miles.

Memorials may be made to Aquadale Baptist Church, 32871 Church Street, Norwood, N.C. 28128.

Jeffrey Brantley
Jeffrey Keith "Spider" Brantley, 43, died October 3, 2002 at his residence in Norwood. A funeral service was held October 7 at Hartsell Funeral Home's Lefler Memorial Chapel with Rev. Barry Whitley presiding. Burial was in Friendship United Methodist Church cemetery in Albemarle.

Mr. Brantley was born August 10, 1959 in Albemarle. His parents were Jonathan Brooks Brantley and Virgie Almond Brantley Harward. He was a painter by profession.

Survivors include his wife, Rita Gail Shank Brantley of Ocean Isle; a son Jason Brooks Brantley of Norwood; two daughters, Jessica Brantley Bearden of Polkton and Jennifer Gail Brantley of Ocean Isle; his step-father, Keith Harward of Albemarle; four sisters, Marlene Helms, Debra Poplin and Peggy Almond, all of Norwood and Patricia Surratt of Polkton; and two grandchildren, Kristopher Ryan Bearden and Taylor Kristine Bearden.

Memorials may be sent to the Jeff Brantley Relief Fund, PO Box 7, Albemarle, NC 28002-0007.

Raiford Hinson
a funeral service for Raiford Lee Hinson was held October 6 at First Baptist Church in Locust with Dr. Kinney Wallace and Rev. Mike Dunn officiating. Mr. Hinson died October 3, 2002.

He was born October 11, 1941 in Cabarrus County. His parents were Elias Melville and Anne Buris Smith Hinson. He was a truck driver. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Locust.

Survivors include his wife Brenda Ann Efird Hinson of Locust; a son and wife, Richard L. and Wendy Hinson of Locust; a daughter Melissa and Brad H. Holbrooks of Stanfield; a sister, Gabriella and Jeff Troutman of Locust; a granddaughter, Courtney Holbrooks and a grandson, Byron Holbrooks.

Herbert Roberson
Herbert Ray Roberson, 72, of Albemarle died October 1, 2002 in Stanly Memorial Hospital. A funeral service was held October 3 at Stanly Memorial Chapel with Rev. Jesse Dennis presiding. Burial was in Stanly Gardens of Memory with full military graveside rites conducted by the Stanly County DAV Ritual Team.

Mr. Roberson was born March 14, 1930 in Blount County, Tenn., the son of Robert Lincoln and Minnie Sparks Roberson. He was a retired employee of Wiscassett Mill Co. He was a member of Paul's Crossing Baptist Church and a veteran of the United States Army, Korean Conflict. He was married icon to the late Jeanette H. Roberson who preceded him in death in May, 2001.

Survivors include two sons, Ronald R. Roberson of Stanfield and Darrell M. Roberson of Albemarle; three daughters, Teresa R. Blalock of Albemarle, Janice r. Misenheimer of Mt. Gilead and Terina M. Roberson of Charlotte; four brothers, Reid Roberson, Ernest Roberson, Sam Roberson and Glenn Roberson, all of Albemarle; three sisters, Helen Frick of Albemarle, Maxine Curlee of Richfield and Marie Misenheimer of Richfield; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Sarah Hargett Sellers
Funeral services for Mrs. Sarah Elizabeth Hargett Sellers, 64, of 2804 Plantation Road, Concord, were held June 6 at North West Baptist Church in Concord, Rev. Ed Hall presiding. Burial was in Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis.

Mrs. Sellers died on June 4, 2002 at her home. She was born May 20, 1938 in Monroe and worked as office manager at Silver Maples Community for 20-plus years. She was a charter member of North West Baptist.

Her late parents were Hessie Aldridge and Charlie T. Hargett.

Survivors include her husband, Donald Leon Sellers of the home; sons, Rodger Dale Sellers of Marietta, Ga., and Ricky Leon Sellers of Myrtle Beach; brothers, James j. Hargett and Donald Edward Hargett of Concord, and J.S. Hargett of Greenback, Tenn; and six grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to her church, 3500 Trinity Church Road, Concord, N.C. 28027.

John Everett Cotton
Funeral services for John Everett (Jack) Cotton, 89, of 620 Heathwood Drive, Albemarle were held June 7 at Fairview Memorial Park in Albemarle, Rev. Robert E. Romanello presiding.

Mr. Cotton died on June 5, 2002 at Stanly Memorial Hospital. He was born September 30, 1912 in Richmond County to Judith Ledbetter and James Thomas Cotton. He was married icon to the late Ruth Frye Cotton and was retired as a right-of-way landscaper with the State Highway Department.

He served as a Stanly County deputy under Ralph McSwain. His church membership was at Badin United Methodist.

Survivors include a daughter, Mildred Redwine of Ocala, Fla.; sister, June Hoover of Candor and formerly of Rockingham; nephew and wife, Harold and Judy Cotton of Albemarle, and Sam and Bessie Cotton of Albemarle; and a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Ellen Blackwelder Ferguson
Funeral services for Ellen Blackwelder Ferguson, 66, of 1012 East Main Street, Albemarle were held June 11 at Central United Methodist Church in Albemarle, Rev. Ben Wilson, Dr. Bill Medlin, and Bishop Charlene Kammerer presiding. Burial was in Stanly Gardens of Memory Mausoleum in Albemarle.

Mrs. Ferguson died on June 6, 2002 at NorthEast Medical Center. She was born July 18, 1935 in Cabarrus County to Cora Eury and Gurley Ross Blackwelder.

She was a retired secretary with the Stanly County Board of Education and former secretary of Cabarrus County School System. She received many professional awards including Long Leaf Pine Award, Leadership Award from SCEAOP 1963-1965, and NCEOP 1976-1977. Civic awards included Club Woman of the Year in 1993 from the Albemarle Women's Club.

Mrs. Ferguson was a member of Eastern Star, Albemarle and Central Methodist and was the recipient of many church awards. Attending Central UMC women were seat as honorees.

Surviving are her husband, Rev Avery Ferguson of the home and sister-in-law Helen and Tommy Shinn of Mt. Pleasant.

Memorials may be made to Central Methodist, 172 North Second Street, Albemarle, N.C. 28001.

Rev. James Pressley
The Rev. James B. Pressley of Liberty Hill Church Road, Oakboro passed away June 5, 2002 at his home.

He was born near Wingate on August 8, 1918 to the late Oscar Sanford Pressley and Florence Pressley Simpson. He was predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Elizabeth Rice Pressley, who passed away April 2, 2002.

Rev. Pressley is survived by his three children, James (Jim) S. Pressley and wife Frances of Chocowinity; Linda L. Pressley of Raleigh; and William (Tim) Pressley and wife Deborah of Albemarle. Also surviving are his four grandchildren. They are James Marcum Pressley and wife Helene of Glenview, Ill., Jessica W. Hamm and husband Andrew of Canton, Steven Pressley and Jennifer Pressley of Albemarle. One great grandchild, Alex Hamm of Canton, also survives him.

A dear aunt by marriage, Arlene Taylor, and a special uncle by marriage, Rev. Tommy Deese and wife Betty of Morganton survive. He also is survived by three sisters-in-law, Dorothy Holmes of Monroe, Frances Winchester and husband Ralph of Hamlet, and Daphine Bevins and husband Jack of Rock Hill. He is survived by many paternal and maternal cousins.

Rev. Pressley served in the Navy during World War II. He attended Wingate College, Clear Creek College in Pineville, Ky., and Southwestern Seminary in Fort Worth, Tex. He was ordained to the ministry by the North Monroe Baptist Church in 1946.

His first fulltime pastorate was the Liberty Baptist Church in London, Ky. During his ministry, he served churches in Cabarrus, Union, Anson, Robeson and Stanly counties and Darlington, Chester and Union counties in South Carolina.

Rev. Pressley retired in 1978 from the fulltime ministry but continued to serve several churches as an interim pastor until January, 2000. His last interim was at Palmerville Baptist Church where he and Mrs. Pressley were members.

Funeral service for Rev. Pressley was held June 7 graveside at Midway Baptist Church cemetery in Wingate, conducted by Rev. Farrell Shimpock, Dr. Jim Pressley and Rev. Tommy Deese.
