Edward Joseph Winkler

Shiloh, NC - Edward Joseph Winkler, age 77, of 1383 South Highway 343, Shiloh, NC, died at his residence on Friday, October 18, 2002. He was born in Lima, Ohio, son of the late Edward John and Marie Matthiae Winkler, and was the husband of Catherine Wingling Winkler of the residence. He was retired from the U.S. Navy as a FTC and served in WWII and the Korean War. He was a member of the Fleet Reserve in Elizabeth City, Virginia Beach Masonic Lodge #174, American Association of Retired Persons, and the Knobbs Creek Seniors Club.

Besides his wife Mr. Winkler is survived by: one daughter Kathylee Pullin of Everette, Washington; one son Jonathan Edward Pullin of Beechwood, New Jersey; two sisters, Charlene Wright of Austin Texas, and Rose Marie Norton of Lima, OH; one brother Jerry Winkler of Lima, OH; three grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.

Memorial services will be conducted Tuesday, October 22, 2002 at 2:00 PM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel by Rev. David Moehring. The family will receive friends in the lobby of the funeral home after the services. Memorial donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the Wesley United Methodist Church in Old Trap, NC. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street in Elizabeth City, NC is in charge of arrangements.

RONALD B. AUSTIN

Hatteras, NC – Ronald (Big- Boy) Austin, 71, passed away quietly surrounded by family Monday, May 10th, 2004. Mr. Austin retired from the Coast Guard after 20 years of service, then worked as a ferry captain for the state of North Carolina in Hatteras.

Mr. Austin is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Dixie Gray Austin; daughters Mona Farrow of Buxton, Cathy Sears of Virginia Beach, Dewanna Williams of Corapeake, Delores Austin of Moyock; brothers Aubrey Austin of Greenville, and his twin Donald (Little-Boy) Austin; Ten grandchildren and Two great grandchildren. His son Ronald Austin Jr. precedes him in death.

A graveside service will be held at the Austin Family Cemetery, Hatteras, NC on Friday May 14th, 2004 at 1:00 PM with Rev. Dwight Burris officiating.

Hattie P. Ballance
Gates County native

Mrs. Hattie Louise Piland Ballance, age 66, of 1179 Lynch’s Corner Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died Monday, February 9, 2004, at the Albemarle Hospital. Mrs. Balance, a native of Gates County, was the wife of Jimmie Selvester Ballance of the residence and the daughter of Margaret Duck Spivey and the step-daughter of Darvin W. Spivey of Whaleyville, VA, and the daughter of the late Wiley Lawrence Piland. She was a member of Ramoth Gilead Baptist Church and a retired manager from the South Mills Supermarket.

Besides her husband and mother, she is survived by two daughters, Vanessa B. Johnson and Gloria Ballance, both of Elizabeth City, NC; a son, Lawrence Ballance of Elizabeth City, NC; three grandchildren; and one great grandchild.

A graveside funeral service will be Friday, February 13, 2004, at 2:00 PM at West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Jake Mullins officiating. The family will receive friends at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, from 7:00 to 8:30 PM Thursday evening and at other times at the residence.

MARJORIE E. GREGORY
KILL DEVIL HILLS, N. C.

Marjorie Erickson Gregory, 92 of West Airstrip Road, Kill Devil Hills, N. C., died Sunday July 4, 2004, at Brithaven of the Outer Banks.

She was born Currituck County, NC, and was the daughter of the late Thomas and Hallie McCann Wright Erickson of Norfolk, Virginia.

She and her late husband William Sanford Gregory were the retired owner and operator’s of Gregory’s Cottages and Amoco. She was a member of the Kitty Hawk United Methodist Church, a charter member of the Coinjock Chapter # 218 Order of the Eastern Star, member of the Outer Banks Community Foundation, the College of the Albemarle Foundation and the Currituck County Historical Society.

Survivors include one sister; Ruth E. Esancy of Chesapeake, Virginia and her nephews Thomas Goff Erickson, Lindsey E. Esancy, Kenneth E. Fusch, Thomas E. Taliaferro, Sr., and her late husband’s nephew Norman H. Gregory, Jr. She was preceded in death by one sister Irene E. Taliaferro and one brother Thomas Erickson.

Funeral services will be conducted Sunday July 11, 2004, at 4:00 P. M. from the Twiford Memorial Chapel in Elizabeth, City N. C. by the Rev. Richard L. Stone. Burial will follow in the New Hollywood Cemetery in Elizabeth City, N. C. The family will receive friends Saturday afternoon July 10, 2004, from 4:30 P. M. to 5:30 P. M. at Twiford Funeral Home in Elizabeth City, N. C.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be directed to; the Kitty Hawk United Methodist Church 803 West Kitty Hawk Road, Kitty Hawk, N. C. 27949 or the charity of one’s choice.

George C. Wilson, Sr.

Elizabeth City, NC - George Carlie Wilson, Sr., 75, of 113 Grove Street, Elizabeth City, NC, died Tuesday, October 15, 2002 at Sentara Center – Currituck. He was born in Lumberton, NC, the son of the late Thomas McCoy and Fletta Mae Stogner Wilson and was the widower of Addie Mae Forbis Wilson. He was a retired carpenter, a member of the Honor Guard with the William Clarence Jackson V. F. W. Post 6060, and was a veteran of the U. S. Navy having served during World War II.

Mr. Wilson is survived by four sons, Wayne Wilson and wife Judy of Elizabeth City, NC, Ray Wilson of Jupiter, FL, Michael Wilson and wife Delene of Wake Forest, NC, and Gary Wilson and wife Phyllis of Dunn, NC; ten grandchildren and six great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Carla Wilson; a son, George Wilson, Jr.; two sisters, Edna Probst and Helen Rogers; and three brothers, Alfred, L. W. and Arthur Wilson.

A funeral service will be conducted on Thursday, October 17, 2002 at 3:00 pm in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. F. Joe Griffith officiating and military honors provided by the William Clarence Jackson V. F. W. Post 6060. Burial will be in New Hollywood Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the lobby of the funeral home immediately following the service, at the funeral home on Wednesday from 7:00 to 8:00 pm, and at other times at the residence of Wayne and Judy Wilson, 113 Grove Street, Elizabeth City, NC.

Virginia Barnett

Elizabeth City, NC - Virginia Ferrell Barnett, 80, of 113 Harrell Street, Elizabeth City, NC died Sunday, June 15, 2003 at her residence. She was born in Elizabeth City, NC to the late Claude Eure and Evelyn S. Ferrell and was the widow of Henry Grady Barnett. She was a retired telephone operator and supervisor with Carolina Telephone Company, a member of First Baptist Church, the Pasquotank Arts Council, and was a graduate of Elizabeth City State University.

Mrs. Barnett is survived by a son, Michael Barnett of the home and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother, Claude E. Ferrell, Jr.

A funeral service will be conducted on Tuesday, June 17, 2003 at 2:00 PM at First Baptist Church by the Rev. Dr. Lamar Eiland. Burial will be at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the parlor of the church immediately following the service and at other times at the residence. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to First Baptist Church, P. O. Box 402, Elizabeth City, NC 27909.

Paulette Fratello Kempinger
Long Island, NY native

Paulette Kempinger, age 56, of 406 Pasquotank Station Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died Sunday, April 27, 2003 at her residence. Mrs. Kempinger, a native of Long Island, NY, was the wife of Francis William Kempinger of the residence and the daughter of the late Charles Fratello and Pauline Jankow Fratello. Mrs. Kempinger was an Episcopalian and a retired surgical nurse.

Besides her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Deborah Xavier-Wells of Tacoma, WA; a son, Kenneth Charles Xavier of IA; a sister, Frances Bellak of NJ; a brother, Michael Fratello of NJ; and two grandchildren. She was predeceased by two sons, Joseph F. Kempinger and William F. Kempinger.

A memorial service will be Thursday, May 1, 2003, at 2:00 PM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. John Dunton officiating.

Glenn McDonald

Elizabeth City, NC - Glenn Albert McDonald, Sr., 79, of 1502 Pot O’ Gold Trail, Elizabeth City, NC, died Saturday, May 3, 2003. He was born in Pasquotank County, NC to the late Samuel and Bertie Jones McDonald and was the widower of Josephine Curles McDonald. He was a retired production controller with the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, a lifetime member of the V. F. W. Post 6060, a veteran of the U. S. Army having served during World War II, and owned an industrial mowing company for the last 26 years.

Mr. McDonald is survived by his fiancée, Patricia Kunze of Elizabeth City, NC; two daughters, Linda Turner and husband Johnny of Chesapeake, VA and Connie Lunsford and husband David of Elizabeth City, NC; two sons, Sam McDonald and wife Betsy of Greenville, NC and Jay McDonald and wife Elaine of Camden, NC; nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted on Tuesday, May 6, 2003 at 3:00 PM at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery by the Rev. A. G. Parker with full military honors provided by V. F. W. Post 6060. The family will receive friends at the residence.

Elijah Keel
Edgecomb County native

Elijah Keel, age 86, of 154 Wharf Road, Shiloh, NC, died Wednesday, March 26, 2003, at the Albemarle Hospital. Mr. Keel, a native of Edge- comb County, NC, was the widow of Hazel Virginia Braddy Keel and the son of the late James Keel and Mattie Louise Watson Keel. He was a pipe fitter with the Norfolk Naval Shipyard and a US Army veteran of WW II.

Mr. Keel is survived by a daughter, Virginia Louise Driggs of Plant City, FL; two sons, Jimmy Elijah Keel of Plymouth, NC, and Bennett Ray Keel of Shiloh, NC; a sister, Maggie Davenport of Tarboro, NC; a brother, Daniel Keel of Tarboro, NC; eight grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Saturday, March 29, 2003, at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel at 2:00 PM with the Rev. Richard Thomas officiating. Burial will follow in New Hollywood Cemetery with military honors provided by the William Clarence Jackson VFW Post 6060. The family will receive friends Friday from 7:00 to 8:30 at the funeral home and at other times at the residence of Mrs. Hilda Sawyer, 1002 Maple Street, Elizabeth City, NC.

Michael McCarthy

HATTERAS, NC - MICHAEL DENNIS McCARTHY, 49, of Hatteras, died, Tuesday, January 20, 2004, in Hatteras. Mr. McCarthy was born in Worcester, Mass and was a plastics technician. Mr. McCarthy was a member of the Catholic Church and enjoyed fishing and his grandchildren. He served his country honorably in the U.S. Navy.

He was the son of Margaret McGrath McCarthy and the late Warren McCarthy and was the husband of Brenda Minor McCarthy.

Besides his wife surviving are one daughter; Tara McCarthy Reid of Kannapolis, N.C. and one son; Ryan Michael McCarthy of Hatteras, three sisters; Kelly Grant, Kathleen Pastore and Bridgett McGovern, one brother; Mark McCarthy and four grandchildren; Matthew McCarthy, Ashton Reid and Logan Reid and Mickey McCarthy.

A funeral service will be held at Our Lady of the Sea Catholic Church, Friday, January 23, 2004, at 1:00 p.m. by Father Andre’ Izac. Friends may join the family at Twiford’s Funeral Home, Thursday from 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Salvation Army, 602 N. Hughes Blvd, Elizabeth City, N.C. 27909. Twiford’s Island Chapel Hatteras is assisting the McCarthy family.

Janet Lynn McCaskill

Wanchese, NC - Janet Lynn Caudill McCaskill, 46, died Sunday, August 22, 2004, at her residence. She was born in Sparta, NC and was a retired mate on the Hobo Charter Fishing Boat. Mrs. McCaskill attended Wanchese Assembly of God and Manteo Baptist Church. She was the daughter of the late Clay Franklin Caudill and the late Pearl Upchurch Caudill and the wife of John Stephen McCaskill of the home.

Besides her husband, she is survived by one daughter, Mary Lorrain “Rainnie” McCaskill of the home; four brothers, Timothy George Caudill of Nags Head, Phillip Cleave Caudill of Knotts Island, NC, Jerry Clay Caudill of Kings Mountain, NC and Dale Franklin Caudill of Boone; her in-laws, James T. and Mary C. Jones of Winston Salem.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Wanchese Assembly of God on Friday, August 27, 2004 at 3:00 PM with Dr. David Dalton officiating. Burial will take place in the Whitehead-Joines Cemetery in Sparta, NC. The family will receive friends at the church for a time of fellowship immediately following the service and at other times at the residence. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Wanchese Assembly of God, P.O. Box 201, Wanchese, NC 27981.

Warren Lee Williams, Sr.

Elizabeth City, NC - Warren L. Williams, Sr. age 60, of 768 Okisko Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died Wednesday, October 30, 2002 at his residence. He was born in Pasquotank County son of the late Alton Williams, and Mary Wright Williams Goodwin of Hertford, NC, and was the husband of Louise Weaver Williams of the residence. Mr. Williams worked as an electrician for the Cotton Mill, and was former owner of Winfall Auto Tech, and he loved to fish.

Besides his wife and mother he is survived by two daughters, Rhonda Bradley of Moyock, NC, and Monica Onley of Elizabeth City, NC; two sons, Warren Williams, Jr. and Terry A. Williams, both of Elizabeth City, NC; two sisters, Alice Faye Jones and Vivian L. Hale, both of Edenton, NC; four grandchildren.

A funeral service will be conducted Sunday, November 3, 2002 at 2:00 PM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Reverend Kelly Lacy officiating. Burial will follow in New Hollywood Cemetery. The family will receive friends and relatives at the funeral home Saturday evening from 7:00 PM till 8:00 PM. At other times the family will be at the residence, 768 Okisko Road, Elizabeth City, NC. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Doyle Lyfette Williams

Doyle Lyfette Williams, age 65, of 222 Powers Drive, Elizabeth City, NC, died Friday, December 20, 2002 at his residence. He was born in Vandale, AR, son of the late Bailey Williams and Cora Woolbright Williams. He was the husband of Laura Decker Williams. Mr. Williams was a retired floor installer with Local #1310 Union Building.

He is survived by two daughters, Patti Cotton and Susan Hunt of Lawrenceburg, TN; one son, Scott Gresham of New Market, AL; five sisters, Audrey Reagle of Batesville, AR, Ruby Cook of Gary IN, Nellie Clemons of St. Louis, MO, Shawlene Tolbert of Florissant, MO, Lenora Pitts of St. Louis, MO; two grandchildren.

Funeral service will be Sunday, December 22, 2002 in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel at 10:00 AM with the Rev. Ricky Cotton officiating. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Diane Midgett

Powells Point, NC - Diane Midgett, age 60, of 8341 A, Caratoke Highway, Powells Point, NC, died January 26, 2004 at Albemarle Hospital. She was born in Pasquotank County, NC, daughter of the late Ezekiel M. Midgett and Lucy Sawyer Midgett.

Mrs. Midgett is survived by a daughter, Stacie Davis of Point Harbor, NC; three sons, Vernon Twiford of Powells Point, NC, Jeff Davis of Amelia, OH, and Kevin Davis of Grandy, NC; a brother, Ezekiel W. Midgett of Harbinger, NC, and eight grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Vernon Ray and William A. Midgett.

A funeral service will be held Friday, January 30, 2004 at 2:00 pm in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with Rev. Walter Ray Gallop officiating. Burial will be in New Hollywood Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 7:00 until 8:30 pm, and Friday before the service from 12:00 until 2:00 pm, and at other times at the residence of the daughter, Stacie Davis, 150 Oakwood Trail, Point Harbor, NC. Sherry White

Sherry Hall White, 54, of 561 Gaulberry Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died Sunday, December 1, 2002 at her residence. She was born in Pasquotank County, NC, the daughter of Valerie Byrd Hall of Elizabeth City, NC and the late Lemuel Hall and was the wife of David M. White of the home. She was a nurse.

Other survivors include a daughter, Melissa Cartwright of Elizabeth City, NC; a son, Stephen White of Elizabeth City, NC; two sisters, Sybil Baccus of Hertford, NC and Sheri Hammonds-Gerard of Redding, CA; a brother, Randy Hall of Elizabeth City, NC; a grandson, Dylan Cartwright of Elizabeth City, NC; a step mother, Dorothy Easley of California and several aunts, uncles, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her biological father, Al Hammonds and a brother, Eddie Hammonds.

A memorial service will be conducted on Tuesday, December 3, 2002 at 11:00 am at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Larry Frank. The family will receive friends at the funeral home immediately following the service and at other times at the residence.

Sara Margaret Bright Twiford

Elizabeth City, NC - Sara Margaret Bright Twiford, age 87, of Elizabeth City, NC died Monday, November 11, 2002 in Guardian Care Nursing Home. She was born in Pasquotank County, daughter of the late Ernest LaSalle Bright and Christian Cornelius Warden Bright, and was the widow of Leslie J. Twiford. Mrs. Twiford was retired from Emmanuel Day Care Center and was a charter member of Emmanuel Baptist Church.

She is survived by three daughters, Melva T. Hardison and husband, Charles, of Camden, NC, Dawn Miller and husband, David, of Elizabeth City, NC, and Velma Dean Saunders and husband, Buck, of Zephyrhills, Fl.; one son, John Thomas Twiford of Elizabeth City, NC; one sister Vilma Umphlett of Elizabeth City, NC; ten grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be conducted Thursday, November 14, 2002, at 11:00am in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Ed Hawkins officiating. Burial will be in Old Hollywood Cemetery. The family will greets friends and relatives in the lobby of the funeral home immediately following the service.

Linda Louise Trueblood
Perquimans County Resident

Linda Louise Trueblood, age 38, of 116 Longview Estates, Hertford, NC, died Saturday, November 2, 2002, at her residence. She was the daughter of Roger Lee Trueblood, Sr., and Edna Allen Trueblood of Elizabeth City, NC. She was a native of Pasquotank County and a bakery manager for Golden Corral.

Besides her parents, she is survived by a daughter, Holly Michelle Bundy; and a son, Howard Wesley “BJ” Bundy, Jr., both of Elizabeth City, NC; a sister, Sherry Trueblood Gibbs, and her husband Leonard of Elizabeth City, NC; a brother, Roger Lee Trueblood, Jr., and his wife Jean of Elizabeth City, NC. She is also survived by close friends, Wes and Jamie Bundy, Mabel Bundly, Mike Bowen, Christy Bowen, and Christopher (Buddy) Bowen. She was predeceased by a brother, Cary Glenn Trueblood.

A memorial service will be Thursday, November 7, 2002, at 2:00 PM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. David Mansingh and Ernest Cole officiating. The family will receive friends in the lobby of the funeral home immediately following the service.

Albert W. Leary

Albert Wayne Leary, age 66, of 110 South McMorrine Street, Elizabeth City, NC, died Wednesday, October 2, 2002 in Albemarle Hospital. He was a native of Camden County / Old Trap, NC; son of the late John Mitchell and Elsie Harrison Leary. He was a brick mason and was a Methodist.

Mr. Leary is survived by a daughter, Cynthia Leary Hampton and husband, Russ “Cricket”, of Coinjock, NC; a son, Kelly Wayne Leary of Camden, NC; a sister, Sylvia Crank of Elizabeth City, NC; and two grandchildren, Victoria and Isabella Hampton. He is predeceased by a sister, Angeleen Riggs Jones, and four brothers, Jack, Douglas, Arliss, and Phillip Leary.

A graveside service will be held Saturday, October 5, 2002, 2:00 PM at Wesley United Methodist Church Cemetery in Old Trap with the Rev. David Moehring officiating. The family will receive friends and relatives in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, NC on Friday evening from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM and at other times at the home of Cynthia and Cricket Hampton, 1171 Waterlily Road, Coinjock. Memorial donations may be made to Elizabeth City Shrine Club, B.P.O.Elks # 856, or to the family.
