Paula McCord

Currituck, NC - Paula H. McCord, “Memaw”, 50, of Currituck, NC, died Tuesday, September 24, 2002 at Albemarle Hospital. Born in Wake County, NC, she was the daughter of Hazel R. Harmon and the late Claxton P. Harmon.

Paula was a loving wife, mother, and friend. She touched many lives with her kindness. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

She is survived by her husband, Dennis “Eddie” McCord; a daughter, Beth Williams and her husband Rusty; a son, Kevin McCord and his wife Alexis; and two grandchildren, Justin McCord and Grant Williams all of Currituck.

A funeral service will be conducted on Friday, September 27, 2002 at 2:00 pm at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with Minister Dennis Crehan officiating. Burial will follow in Moyock Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 7:00 to 8:30 pm and at other times at the residence.

Etta P. Mann

Mrs. Etta Pierce Mann, 90, formerly of Northside Road, Elizabeth City, NC died Monday, October 14, 2002 at Carolina Living in Elizabeth City. She was a native of South Mills, NC; daughter of the late Charlie Henry and Narcissia Laurietta Stewart Pierce and was the widow of Rex Mann.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Elizabeth City, NC and retired in 1973 from Hopkins Brothers as a bookkeeper.

Mrs. Mann is survived by a step daughter, Jean M. Wallace, four step grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be conducted on Wednesday, October 16, 2002 at 2:00 pm in New Hollywood Cemetery with the Rev. Glenn Greenway officiating. The family will receive friends at the residence of Audrey Harris, 1690 Morgan’s Corner Road, Elizabeth City, NC. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church Building Fund, P. O. Box 401, Elizabeth City, NC 27907.

Clara S. Leary

Clara Sears Leary, 86, of Shawboro, NC died Thursday evening, November 28, 2002, in the Winslow Memorial Home. She was born in Currituck County, NC to the late Robert Edward and Luna Alden Barnard Sears and was the widow of the late Christopher Columbus Leary, III. She was a member of the Providence Baptist Church.

Mrs. Leary is survivied by a daughter, Rosa “Stevie” Northwood of Elizabeth City; two sons, Christopher C. Leary IV of Shawboro and Wayne Sears Leary of Camden; a sister, Anne Sears Meads of Shawboro; a brother, Howard M. Sears of Chesapeake, Va. and a grandson, Mark H. Johnston of Nags Head.

The family will receive family and friends at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, Church St., Elizabeth City, Sunday, December 1, 2002, from 3:00 until 5:00pm. The family suggests in lieu of flowers memorial gifts be made to the Salvation Army, P. O. Box 1967, Elizabeth City, NC 27909. The body will be cremated and no services are planned at the present time.

Earl Clifton Lane
Retired Pasquotank Deputy Sheriff

Earl Clifton Lane, age 85, of 397 Hog Neck Road, Hertford, NC, died Tuesday, November 5, 2002, at his residence. Mr. Lane a native of Perquimans County, was the husband of Nellie Maude Smith Lane of Elizabeth City, NC, and the son of the late Joshua Lane and Sara Taylor Lane. He was a WW II Veteran of the US Navy. From 1940 to 1942 and from 1945 to 1961 he was a long distance truck driver. He was a Pasquotank County Deputy Sheriff from 1961 to 1982 and a security guard at S & R Supermarkets from 1982 to 1991. He was an honorary member of the Perquimans Ruritan Club, a member of the Perquimans Masonic Lodge # 106, the Scottish Rites Bodies, and attended Woodville Baptist Church.

Mr. Lane is survived by two daughters, Earline L. Meads and her husband, Nicky, of Elizabeth City, NC, and Linda L. Goldstein of Sarasota, FL; two grandchildren, Stephen E. Meads and his wife, Sharon, and Christy M. Graves and her husband Jimmy; and one great grandson, Ryan M. Meads. He was predeceased by a sister, Mary Hurdle, and two brothers, Willis Lane and Spurgeon Lane.

A funeral service will be Thursday, November 7, 2002 at 11:00 AM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with Masonic Rites and full Military Honors provided by the William Clarence Jackson Post # 6060. Burial will follow in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends immediately after the service in the funeral home lobby and at other times at the residence of the daughter, Mr. & Mrs. Nicky Meads, 481 Meadstown Road, Elizabeth City, NC. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, % Hazel Anderson, 106 South Ashe Street, Elizabeth City, NC 27909.

Carol D. Lamb

Carol Dempsey Lamb, age 70, of 859 Four Mile Desert Road, Hertford, NC, died Tuesday, November 26, 2002, at the Albemarle Hospital. Mr. Lamb, a native of Perquimans County, was the widower of Renia Meads Lamb and the son of the late Louis Dempsey Lamb and Mary Ellie Ferrell Lamb. He was the owner and operator of C. D. Lamb, Inc.

Mr. Lamb is survived by two daughters, Donna Stevenson, and her finance Neil Norman, and Glennett Spruill, and her husband Wesley, all of Hertford, NC; two brothers, Maxie Lamb, Sr., and James Lamb, both of Hertford, NC; two sisters, Hattie Harris and Florence Boone, both of Elizabeth City, NC; a half sister, Mildred Papouchous of Virginia Beach, VA; five grand children, Brad Stevenson and his wife Michelle, Kim Harris and her husband Buddy, Anne Cuthrell, Tyler Spruill, and Glenda Spruill; two great grand children, Ethan Stevenson and Haley Stevenson; his mother-in-law, Delia Meads of Elizabeth City, NC, and a son-in-law, Tommy Speight of Hertford, NC. He was predeceased by a daughter, Carolyn Lamb Speight.

Funeral services will be Friday, November 29, 2002, at 2:00 PM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. William Rembert and the Rev. Roland Cooper officiating. Burial will follow in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Stuart Meads officiating. The family will receive friends at the residence of the daughter, Mr. & Mrs. Wesley Spruill, 869 Four Mile Desert Road, Hertford, NC.

George Key

George Russell Key, Sr., age 70, of 1309 West Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC, died Saturday, November 30, 2002 at Albemarle Hospital. He was born in Pasquotank County, son of the late George and Mary Bray Key, and was the husband of Marjorie Hall Key of the residence. He was a retired employee of Elizabeth and Suburban Gas Co., had been in the U.S. Army, and a Baptist.

Besides his wife, Mr. Key is survived by: three daughters, Mary White and husband Henry of Elizabeth City, Alma Gause and husband George of Hertford, NC, and Linda Layden and husband Russell of Elizabeth City; two sons: Romie Brickhouse and wife Carolyn, and George Key, Jr. all of Elizabeth City; two sisters: Mae Tarkington of Camden, NC, and Edith Weidner of Kentucky; twelve grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren.

Memorial services will be conducted Monday, December 2, 2002 at 2:00 PM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street. The family will be at the residence.

Samuel Jolly, Jr.

Col. Ret. Samuel B. Jolly, Jr., 72, of Swan Circle, Point Harbor, NC, died Monday morning, November 25, 2002, at his residence. He was born in Wilmington, NC to the late Samuel B. and Adelle Singletary Jolly. Col. Jolly retired from the U. S. Air Force after 24 years of service; he was a member and deacon of the Powells Point Baptist Church and was very active in the Chowan Baptist Association.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Jo Ann Maultsby Jolly; two sons, Stephen A. Jolly of Virginia Beach, VA and Joseph S. Jolly of Richmond, VA; a daughter, Jennifer Marsh of Chapin, SC; and four grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, November 27, 2002, at 2:00pm in the Powells Point Baptist Church by Revs. Herbert Hemingway and Eugene McLawhorn. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery with military honors. The family suggests memorial gifts may be made to Powells Point Baptist Church, P. O. Box 328, Powells Point, NC 27966 or to the Lower Currituck Co. Volunteer Rescue Squad, P. O. Box 486, Grandy, NC 27932. Twiford’s Funeral Home, 405 E. Hugh M. "Monty" Jolley

Hugh Montgomery Jolley, III “Monty”, 56, of 5208 Virginia Dare Trail, Kitty, Hawk, NC, died Wednesday, October 2, 2002 at Albemarle Hospital in Elizabeth City, NC after a long battle for 5½ years with pulmonary cancer. He was born in Craven County, NC, the son of Audrey H. and C. O. McMullan of Elizabeth City and the late Hugh M. Jolley, Jr.

Mr. Jolley was a graduate of Elizabeth City High School and Western Carolina University having earned a B. A. and later a B. S. degree in Education at Elizabeth City State University. He was a sales representative, past president of the Elizabeth City Jaycees, a member of the First Christian Church, and taught in the Camden and Currituck County School Systems.

Other survivors include a sister, Wanda McMullan of Elizabeth City, NC; a daughter, Dana Michelle Collier and husband Brian of Falls Church, VA; a step grandfather, Walton Straley of Kitty Hawk, NC; and a truly devoted, loving, caring fiancee, Carol Umphlett of the home. Mr. Jolley is also survived by a large family consisting of uncles, aunts, and cousins.

A graveside service will be conducted on Friday, October 4, 2002 at 3:00 pm at Old Hollywood Cemetery with the Rev. Glenn Brigman and the Rev. Eugene McLawhorn officiating. The family will receive friends at the cemetery following the service and at other times at the home of C. O. and Audrey McMullan, 801 West Colonial Avenue, Elizabeth City, NC. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the First Christian Church Building Fund, 701 Parsonage Street, Elizabeth City, NC 27909, or to the American Cancer Society, c\o Hazel Anderson, 106 S. Ashe Street, Elizabeth City, NC 27909, or to a charity of one’s choice.

MARY ELIZABETH IVEY JOHNSON
Perquimans County native

Mary Elizabeth Ivey Johnson, 77, of 19 Beth Drive, Moorestown, NJ died Friday, December 20, 2002, at her residence. She was born in Perquimans County, NC to the late Redden and Ruth Layden Ivey and was the widow of the late Marius Johnson. Mrs. Johnson was a retired salesperson for Pomeroys.

She is survived by three daughters, Jennifer Besnoff of Moorestown, NJ, Barbara Grabert of Narlton, NJ and Claudia Kutch of Mt. Holley, NJ; seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted Monday morning, December 23, 2002, at 11:00am in the Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, NC by Rev. F. Joe Griffith. Burial will be in the New Hollywood Cemetery. The family will greet friends and relatives in the lobby of the funeral home immediately following the chapel service. Twiford’s Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Vernon Grant James, Sr.

Elizabeth City, NC - Vernon Grant James, Sr., 92 of Pasquotank County, NC died Monday, October 21, 2002 at his residence. He was born in Pasquotank Co., NC, son of the late John Calvin and Fanny Coppersmith James and was the husband of Thelma Sanders James. He was a charter member of the NC 4-H Honor Club, The NC House of Representatives for 26 years, Salem Baptist Church, Eureka Lodge 317 AF & AM, Elizabeth City York Bodies and Sudan Shrine Temple of New Bern, NC.

Besides his wife, Mr. James is survived by a daughter, Joyce Beutler of Mapleton, UT; a son, Alan Sanders of Hickory, North Carolina; two sisters, Jemima Markham and Irene Roberson, both of Elizabeth City, NC; a brother, William James of Winfall, NC; twelve grandchildren, eighteen great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his first wife, Selma Harris James; two sons, John Thomas James, Sr. and Vernon Grant James, Jr.; four sisters, Vivian Daniels, Louise Morrisette, Myra Trueblood, and Elizabeth Williamson and two brothers, Rueben James and Ernest James.

A funeral service will be conducted on Thursday, October 24 at 10:00 AM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, NC with Rev. Michael Jordan officiating. Burial will follow in the Salem Baptist Church Cemetery. A memorial service will held at the Fine Arts Center of ECSU at 4:00 PM Thursday. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday evening from 7:00 until 8:30 PM. In lieu of flowers, it was Mr. James’s wish that any donations be made to the Vernon James Scholarship, c/o 4-H Development Fund, Box 7645, Raleigh, NC 27695-7645.

HUBERT GLENN “SKEETER” HUGHES, JR.
Native of New Bern, NC

Hubert G. “Skeeter” Hughes, Jr., 53, of 408 Alton Street, Elizabeth City died Sunday evening, October 27, 2002, in the Albemarle Hospital. He was born in New Bern, NC to the late Hubert Glenn Hughes, Sr. and Laura Daughtery Hughes. He was a retired long shore man with the Portsmouth International Terminal.

Mr. Hughes is survived by a very close companion, Cindy Mitnick of the home, and several aunts, uncles and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday afternoon, October 30, 2002, at 2:00pm in the Twiford’s Northside Chapel, 1115 N. Road St., Elizabeth City. Burial will be in the West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will greet friends and relatives in the lobby of the funeral home immediately following the funeral service and at other times at the residence. Twiford’s Northside Chapel, 1115 N. Road Street is in charge of arrangements.

John Edward Hughes

Boca Raton, FL - John Edward Hughes, Jr. died August 8, 2002 at his home in Boca Raton, Florida. He was born February 26, 1918 in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. Preceding him in death were his parents John Edward Hughes and Edna Kramer Hughes. He attended the Elizabeth City schools and was a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, North Carolina. During World War II he served in the United States Navy, continuing a career with the Navy following the War, retiring as a full Commander. Before moving to Florida, he maintained a home in Virginia Beach, Virginia, for many years.

Besides his many friends, he is survived by six first cousins; Elizabeth Hughes Falardeau of Rochester, New York, Betty Griffin Ingram of Elizabeth City, North Carolina, William Edward Griffin, Jr. of Herford, North Carolins, Ann Ray Kramer Hillier of Bluefield, West Virginia, Virgilia Leggett Church of Henderson, North Carolina, and Jean Leggett Shuping of Raleigh, North Carolina.

Graveside services will be held on Saturday, September 28, 2002 at 2:00 PM in the Old Hollywood Cemetery, the Allen Kramer lot, with the Rev. Fredericka Steenstra officiating. Memorial gifts may be made to Christ Episcopal Church in Elizabeth City, or a charity of your choice. The family may be contacted through Mrs. Betty G. Ingram. 2121 Rivershore Road, Elizabeth City or Mrs. Ann K. Hillier, 1016 Dogwood Lane, Bluefield, West Virginia 24701. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Jean C. Newsome Honeycutt

Elizabeth City, NC - Jean C. Newsome Honeycutt, 66, of 786 Dryridge Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died Wednesday, November 6, 2002 at Albemarle Hospital. She was born in Salisbury, NC, the daughter of the late Irving Ingle and Louise Wright Newsome and was the wife of Fred W. Honeycutt of the home. She was a civil service worker with the United States Coast Guard in the Procurement and Provisioning Services, a member of the Trinity Baptist Fellowship, and a member of the C. P. O. A. Auxillary.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Honeycutt is survived by two daughters, Deana Honeycutt and Donna H. Creasy both of Elizabeth City; one son, Christopher W. Honeycutt of Elizabeth City; one brother, Bobby Newsome of Albemarle, NC; seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be conducted on Saturday, November 9, 2002 at 2:00 pm at First Baptist Church by the Rev. David Mansingh and the Rev. Michael Jordan. Entombment will follow in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Friday from 7:00 to 8:30 pm at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel and at other times at the residence.

Luther Douglas Holmes

L. Douglas Holmes, 76, of 104 Scotland Drive, Elizabeth City died Wednesday night, December 11, 2002, in the Winslow Memorial Home. He was born in Pasquotank County to the late Edward Wallace and Beuna Vista Brinson Holmes. He was retired from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, a member of the Blackwell Memorial Baptist Church and served in World War II with the merchant marines.

He is survived by his wife, Lora Fay Norfleet Holmes of the home, two daughters, Ellen Holmes Russell of Elizabeth City, NC and Teresa Holmes Richardson of Simpsonville, NC; three sons, Terry Douglas Holmes of Shreveport, LA, Mark Alan Holmes of Elizabeth City and Kevin Paul Holmes of Raleigh, NC; and nine grandchildren.

A gathering of family and friends will be Saturday evening, December 14, 2002, from 7:00 until 8:30pm at Twiford's Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, NC. There will be a private memorial service at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Blackwell Memorial Baptist Church, 700 North Road Street, Elizabeth City, NC 27909 or to The Salvation Army, P. O. Box 1967, Elizabeth City, NC 27906-1967.

Charles Hodges

Camden, NC - Charles Hodges, 71, of 118 US 158 West, Camden, NC died Wednesday, November 6, 2002. He was born in Camden; son of the late Harry and Laura Lamb Hodges and was the husband of Jean Lamb Hodges. He retired as an engineer from Norfolk and Southern Railroad and was owner and operator of Charlie’s Country Store in Camden. Mr. Hodges was a member of Sawyer’s Creek Baptist Church and the Widow’s Son Masonic Lodge # 75 AF & AM.

Besides his wife, Mr. Hodges is survived by a daughter, Charlene H. Loope and her husband, David, of Columbia, SC; a son, Chuck Hodges and his wife, Lynn, of Camden, NC; a sister, Faye Webb of Camden, NC and three grandchildren. He was predeceased by a sister, Virginia H. Bray.

A graveside service will be conducted on Saturday, November 9 at 11:00 am in New Hollywood Cemetery with Rev. Tom LeGrand officiating. The family will be at the residence and asks that memorial donations be made to Sawyer’s Creek Baptist Church.

Gettis Harris, Jr.
Native of Currituck Co., NC

Gettis Harris, Jr., 75, of 356 N. Spot Road, Powells Point, NC died Sunday morning, November 24, 2002, in the Sentara Barco Nursing Home. He was born in Currituck County to the late Gettis and Ruth Mercer Harris and was the widower of the late Wilma Sawyer Bohannon Harris. Mr. Harris was retired from the Ford Motor Company, a member of the Powells Point Baptist Church and member of the Currituck Masonic Lodge #463 AF & AM.

He is survived by two daughters, Ruth Ann Perry of Powells Point, NC and Dottie B. Jordan of Aydlett, NC; two sons, Gettis Michael Harris of Harbinger, NC and William P. Bohannon III of Bladenboro, NC; three sisters, Elma George, Frances Moore both of Virginia Beach, VA and Gloria Poyner of Coinjock, NC; eleven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a grandson.

A memorial service will be conducted Wednesday morning, November 27, 2002, at 11:00am in the Powells Point Baptist Church by Revs. Eugene McLawhorn and Larry Benson. The family will be at 356 N. Spot Road, Powells Point. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, Church St., Elizabeth City is in charge of arrangements.

W. R. "Reggie" Gregory

Elizabeth City, NC - W. R. “Reggie” Gregory, age 93, of 486 Firetower Rd., Elizabeth City, NC died Sunday, September 22, 2002 at Albemarle Hospital. He was a native of Pasquotank County, NC; son of the late William James and Anna Turner Gregory and was the widower of Evelyn Bright Gregory. He retired from the N. C. Forestry Service and was a member of Newland United Methodist Church.

Mr. Gregory is survived by a son, William Wilson Gregory of Virginia Beach, VA; two grandchildren, William Arnold Gregory of Elizabeth City, NC and Joy G. Kupetz of Kill Devil Hills, NC; and four great grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted on Wednesday, September 25, 2002 at 11:00 AM at the Stokley Family Cemetery in Newland with Rev. Toni Wood officiating. The family will be at the residence.
