James R. Gray
Retired public school teacher

James Robert Gray, age 64, of 1600 Parkview Drive, Elizabeth City, NC, died Monday, September 16, 2002, at his residence. Mr. Gray was a native of Rutherfordton, NC, and a retired public school teacher. He was the son of the late Willie Lee Gray and Nellie Callahan Gray and the husband of Grace Whiteman Gray of the residence.

Besides his wife, Mr. Gray is survived by a son, Jonathan Gray, and his wife Jennifer, of Camden, NC. He was predeceased by a sister, Margaret Gray Mahaffee, and a brother, William H. Gray.

A memorial service will be conducted Friday, September 20, 2002 at 2:00 PM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. F. Joe Griffith officiating.

The family will receive friends at the residence and immediately after the memorial service in the lobby of the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society - Central Control, PO Box 26777, Raleigh, NC 27611-6777.

Madge S. Goodwin

Madge Simpson Goodwin, 79, of 203 Queen Street, Elizabeth City, NC died Thursday, October 3, 2002 at Albemarle Hospital. She was born in Perquimans County, NC, the daughter of the late Matthew Grover and Ella Mae Beale Simpson and was the widow of Thomas Roy Goodwin. She was a former nurse at the Chowan and Albemarle Hospitals and was a member of the Blackwell Memorial Baptist Church and the Nurse’s Association.

Mrs. Goodwin is survived by one daughter, Joan Goodwin Forehand of Portsmouth, VA; one sister, Myrtle Davenport of Edenton, NC; two grandchildren, Cindy Harris and husband Darren and Matt Forehand all of Chesapeake, VA; and two great grandchildren, Brandon and Rachel Harris both of Chesapeake, VA. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Bradley Louise Goodwin and two sisters, Louise Pratt and Doris Forehand.

A funeral service will be conducted on Sunday, October 6, 2002 at 3:00 pm at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Bob Crisp officiating. Burial will follow in Beaver Hill Cemetery, Edenton, NC. The family will be at the residence. Flowers are accepted or memorial donations may be made to the Blackwell Memorial Baptist Church Building Fund, 700 North Road Street, Elizabeth City, NC 27909.

Fannie Forbes Gallop

Fannie Forbes Gallop, 97, of 162 Texas Road, Shiloh, NC, died Thursday, December 12, 2002 in South Port, NC. She was born in Camden County, NC to the late Jonathan Parker and Mary Elizabeth Riggs Forbes and was the widow of Sim Forbes Gallop. She was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church and its United Methodist Women.

Survivors include four sisters, Martha Vaughn and Nellie Forbes both of Perry, GA; Dorothy Forbes of Statesville, NC; and Isabelle Kight of Shiloh, NC; a brother, Elton Forbes of Chesapeake, VA and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday morning, December 14, 2002, at 11:00am in the Wesley United Methodist Church by Rev. David Moehring. Burial will be in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will be at the home of Gid and Isabelle Kight, 118 Texas Road, Shiloh, NC.

William Woodley Foreman

Elizabeth City, NC - William Woodley “Woody” Foreman, 85, retired businessman, died Tuesday morning in Albemarle Hospital. Woody was born on February 12, 1917 in Elizabeth City, NC and was the son of the late Annie Woodley and James Wesley Foreman. He graduated from Elizabeth City High School, where he excelled in all sports; serving as captain of the baseball, basketball and football teams his senior year. He is often said to be the most outstanding all-around athlete to have attended Elizabeth City High School. Following high school, Woody continued his education and pursuit of sports at Augusta Military Academy, Duke University and Poughkeepsie Business College.

Woody married icon Dorothy Blair Thurman of Raleigh in 1941 and joined his father in the timber and livestock business. During World War II, he served in the U. S. Coast Guard, and thereafter operated Foreman Dairies Company.

He was a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church and a founding member of the Elizabeth City Golf Club. Woody was president of several organizations including Museum of the Albemarle, Elizabeth City Rotary Club and United Way. In 1951, he received the Jaycees’ Distinguished Service Award and was recognized as a lifetime member of the College of the Albemarle Foundation.

Woody served as a member of the Board of Directors of numerous corporations including Southern Loan and Insurance, Atlantic Discount Corporation., First Union National Bank and Norfolk Carolina Telephone and Telegraph Company.

Woody will be remembered for his sense of humor and wit, and his ever-present kindness and generosity. A caring father and devoted husband, Woody will be missed.

Woody is survived by his three children, William Woodley Foreman, Jr. of Kitty Hawk, NC, Allan Charles Foreman of Manteo, NC, and Blair Foreman Jackson of Elizabeth City, NC; eight grandchildren, Brooke and Shea Foreman of Kitty Hawk, NC; Philip, Charles and Stuart Foreman of Manteo, NC; Jenny and Kate Jackson of Elizabeth City, NC and John Jackson of Newport Beach, CA; and devoted friends, Caldonia Overton and Louise Thompson of Elizabeth City, NC.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by two sisters, Camilla Foreman Daniels and Marion Cook Foreman and two brothers, James Wesley Foreman, Jr. and Norton Blades Foreman.

A funeral service will be held at 12:00 noon on Friday, November 8, 2002 at Christ Episcopal Church where his ashes will be interred alongside his beloved wife. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to Albemarle United Way or the charity of one’s choice.

Vivian Fay Brinson Daveiro

Vivian Fay Brinson Daveiro, 72, of 104 Gaston Drive, Elizabeth City, NC, died Tuesday, October 15, 2002 at Albemarle Hospital. She was born in Elizabeth City, NC, the daughter of the late James and Margaret Forbes Brinson and was the widow of Louis Alfred Daveiro. She was a homemaker and a member of Elizabeth City Rebecca Lodge # 62.

Mrs. Daveiro is survived by a daughter, Sherry Godfrey and husband Wayne of Elizabeth City; a son, Louis Alfred Daveiro, Jr. and wife Susan of Elizabeth City; a brother, James Brinson of Elizabeth City; and four grandchildren, J. W. Godfrey, Jamie Daveiro, Janna Godfrey, and Josie Daveiro all of Elizabeth City. She was preceded in death by a sister, Charlotte Godfrey, and two brothers, Hubert and George Brinson.

A graveside service will be conducted on Thursday, October 17, 2002 at 2:00 pm at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Clay Manos officiating. The family will receive friends at the residence of Louis and Susan Daveiro, 104 Gaston Drive, Elizabeth City, NC.

Nellie Mae Owens Coppersmith

Mrs. Nellie Mae Owens Coppersmith, age 82, formerly of Taylor’s Beach, Camden, NC, died Thursday, December 19, 2002 at Winslow Memorial Nursing Home. Mrs. Coppersmith, a native of Camden County, NC, was the widow of Harry Washington Coppersmith, Sr., and the daughter of the late Walter Doyle Owens and Rovena Holmes Owens. She was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church. She worked for 30 years as a waitress at Comstock’s Confectionary on Water Street in Elizabeth city, NC, and prior to that she worked as a waitress at the Virginia Dare hotel Restaurant.

Mrs. Coppersmith is survived by two sons, Harry W. Coppersmith, Jr., of Little River, SC, and Thomas Willard Coppersmith of Odenton, MD; a daughter, Wilhelmina Marie Coppersmith Blair of Fredericksburg, VA; three brothers, George Owens of Shirley, MA, Thomas W. Owens of Elizabeth City, NC, and Jim Owens of Little River, TX; six grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren. She was predeceased by two brothers, Calvin Holmes Owens and Wid Owens.

A graveside service will be Sunday, December 22, 2002, at 2:30 PM in Shiloh Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. David Combs officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday from 7:00 to 8:30 PM.

Myron Willis Chamberlin

Myron Willis Chamberlin, age 95, of 58 Hickory Trail, Southern Shores, NC, died Sunday, December 8, 2002 in Albemarle Hospital. He was born in Three Rivers, MA, son the late Myron Kinney and Fannie E. Calkins Chamberlin. He was the widower of Helen Hendrie Chamberlin. Mr. Chamberlin was a retired Civil Service worker for the US Naval Oceanographic Office in Norfolk, VA and served as a Merchant Marine during World War II serving with the Esso Company. He was a First Mate on the SS Abrams which was torpedoed off the coast of Hatteras during World War II. He graduated from the Massachusetts Maritime Academy, and was a member of the Thomas Lodge A.F. & A.M.

Mr. Chamberlin is survived by a stepson, Robert Kettell and his wife Carolyn of Cincinnati, Ohio; several nieces and nephews; three step grandchildren and two step great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at a later date in Massachusetts. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Louise Isadora Andrews
Native Rhode Island

Mrs. Louise Isadora Andrews, age 76, of 2310 Caratoke Highway, Moyock, NC, died Thursday, June 17, 2004, at the Albemarle Hospital in Elizabeth City, NC. Mrs. Andrews, a native of RI, was the daughter of the late Frank Lloyd Andrews and Isadora Louise Cooke Andrews. She was a homemaker and a member of McBride United Methodist Church.

She is survived by a daughter, Beverly Specht of Moyock, NC; and a son, Bradley Specht of Pollock Pines, CA.

A visitation will be from 2:00 to 6:00 PM Sunday, June 20, 2004 at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC. Burial will be in Highland Memorial Cemetery in Johnston, RI.

Lessie Mae Johnson Burton

Lessie Mae Johnson Burton, age 93, of 901 West Elizabeth Street, Elizabeth City, NC, died Wednesday, October 23, 2002, at the Albemarle Hospital. Mrs. Burton was a native of Chowan County, NC, the widow of Ralph Jerome Burton, and the daughter of the late James Washington Johnson and Laura Virginia Sawyer. She was the retired president, owner, and saleslady for Burton Mercantile Company. Having lived most of her live in Elizabeth City she was the oldest member of Fountain of Life Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Mrs. Burton is survived by a son, Monty M., and his wife Joyce, Marsh of Elizabeth City, NC; a sister, Selma, and her husband Elwood, Ritchie of Elizabeth City, NC; a grandson, Terry, and his wife Catherine, Marsh of Gretna, LA; two grandchildren, Jennifer, and her husband Mike, Waters, and Terry Marsh, Jr.; one great grandson, Joseph Monty Waters, and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be Saturday, October 26, 2002, at 2:00 PM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Bill Mayo officiating. Burial will be in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends immediately after the service in the lobby of the funeral home and at other times at the residence of the son, Mr. & Mrs. Monty M. Marsh, 905 West Elizabeth Street, Elizabeth City, NC.

Evelyn G. Brashear

Evelyn Marie Greenway Brashear, 81, of 103 Pierce Ave., South Mills, NC, died Tuesday, October 1, 2002 at Albemarle Hospital. She was born in Clearview, PA, the daughter of the late Amos P. and Christine Weller Greenway and was the widow of Harold Earl Brashear. She was a former self employed seamstress, a member of Faith Baptist Church, a member of the Widowed Ladies Club of Faith Baptist Church, and a member of the Camden Senior Citizens.

Mrs. Brashear is survived by one daughter, Carol Humbert of South Mills, NC; one son, Robert Horas Brashear of Yardley, PA; two grandchildren; seven step grandchildren; five step great grandchildren and one step great-great grandchild. She was preceded in death by a brother, Amos Greenway.

A funeral service will be conducted on Friday October 4, 2002 at 10:00 am in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Al Thompson officiating. Burial will be in Glenwood Memorial Gardens, Broomall, PA on Monday, October 7, 2002 at 2:00 pm. The family will receive friends at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel on Thursday evening from 7:00 to 8:30 pm and at other times at the residence. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Faith Baptist Church Building Fund, 113 Foxboro Dr., Elizabeth City, NC 27909.

Howard Ange

Nags Head, NC - Howard Mitchell Ange, 81, of 5102 Cleek Court, Nags Head, NC, died Thursday, February 12, 2004 at Albemarle Hospital. He was born in Plymouth, NC, son of the late Phillip Ange and Mattie Pritchard Ange Herrington. He was a retired farmer and merchant and was a resident of Dare County for over 39 years. Mr. Ange was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served during World War II in the 2nd Calvary under Gen. Patton and participated in five battles which include Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes, and Central Europe. He was a member of Mount Olivet United Methodist Church, Manteo Masonic Lodge #521 AF & AM, Scottish Rites of New Bern, Sudan Temple of New Bern, past president of Manteo Shrine Club, past Commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars of Manteo, American Legion Post 26 of Manteo, a former member of the Edenton Rotary Club, and a former member of the Nags Head Lions Club.

Mr. Ange is survived by his wife of over 55 years, Artie Bass Ange; two daughters, Sanfra Ange Foshee and husband Craig of Jackson, MS and Harla Kay Ange of Fort Lauderdale, FL; one sister, Lula A. Deaton of Roper, NC; two granddaughters, Shane F. Hobgood and husband Dr. Rhett Hobgood of Jackson, MS and Shelley F. Hughes and husband Whitt of Madison, MS; and a great grandson, Phillip Hughes of Madison, MS.

A funeral service will be conducted on Monday, February 16, 2004 at 11:00 AM at Mount Olivet United Methodist Church by the Rev. George Speake and the Rev. Robert White. Burial will be at Beaver Hill Cemetery, Edenton, NC at 3:00 PM with Masonic Rites provided by Manteo Lodge #521 AF & AM and military honors provided by V.F.W. Post 6060. The family will receive friends at Twiford’s Colony Chapel on Sunday from 7:00 to 8:30 PM and at other times at the residence, 5102 Cleek Court, Nags Head, NC. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 930 B Wellness Drive, Greenville, NC 27834 or to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 5216, Glen Allen, VA 23058-5216. Andrea McGranahan

DUCK, NC - ANDREA McGRANAHAN, 43, of Duck, NC died suddenly on Friday September 12, 2003 at her residence. Mrs. McGranahan was born on April 30, 1960 in Manhatten, NYC. She moved to the Outerbanks from Connecticut in 1991. Mrs. McGranahan was a graduate of Ridgefield, CT High School and the Katherine Gibbs School.

For the past ten years Mrs. McGranahan served as Office Manager at the Cardiac Rehab Beach Program of the Albemarle Hospital. She was an active member of the Duck United Methodist Church. She was the wife of Mr. William S. McGranahan and the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Vito Ninivaggi, of Bethel, CT.

Ms. McGranahan is also survived by her siblings, Mary Cox of Mansfield, CT; James Ninivaggi of Ridgefield, CT; Susan Daly of Bethel, CT; and Caroline Schestag of Manhattan, NYC; and five nieces and four nephews.

A memorial service will be held at St. Mary’s RC Church, Bethel CT, on Friday, September 19, 2003 at 10:00 am. Memorials may be made to the Duck United Methodist Church Agape Fund, PO Box 8180, Duck Station, NC 27949.

She will be remembered by her family as a loving, kind and generous person.

Gabriella Van Patten McDowell
Native of Norfolk, VA

Mrs. Gabriella Madison Van Patten McDowell, age 88, of the 901 Halstead Boulevard, Elizabeth City, NC, died Sunday, June 13, 2004, at Guardian Care Nursing Home. Mrs. McDowell, a native of Norfolk, VA, was the widow of William Patton McDowell, Jr., and the daughter of the late Isaace Toll Van Patten, Jr., and Carolyn Luceila McClain Van Patten. She was a homemaker and a member of the First United Methodist Church in Elizabeth City. The McDowell’s made their home in Elizabeth City during the forties and fifties before moving to Virginia Beach. Mrs. McDowell returned to make her home in Elizabeth City in the early nineties.

Mrs. McDowell is survived by one daughter, Gabriella “Billy Gay” McDowell Singletary and husband, Gene Singletary of Camden, NC; four sons, William Patton McDowell, III, and wife Dianne Pritchard McDowell of Elizabeth City, NC, Charles Samuel McDowell and wife, Mary Louis Thrush McDowell of Wilmington, DE, Archiebald McKay McDowell and wife, Teresa Wright McDowell of Virginia Beach, VA, and William Woodley McDowell and wife, Bonnie Fisher McDowell of Virginia Beach, VA; three sisters, Margaret Van Patten Cowell of Seattle, WA, Dinah Bradford Van Patten of Phoenix, AZ, and Dula Van Patten Fuller of Asheville, NC; one brother, Isaac Toll Van Patten, III of Virginia Beach, VA; fourteen grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; and three special “family, ” Thelma Gray, Shirley Ferebee and Janie Thomas. She was predeceased by a sister, Lucelia Van Patten White.

A graveside memorial service will be Wednesday, June 16, 2004, at 11:30 AM in Forest Lawn Cemetery with the Rev. Clyde Denny officiating. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6:00 to 9:00 PM at the residence of the son, Mr. & Mrs. William Patton McDowell, III, 1701 Parkview Drive, Elizabeth City, NC, and after the service at the residence of the son, Mr. & Mrs. Archie McDowell, 1200 Colwyck Court, Virginia Beach, VA. Memorial donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church, PO Box 401, Elizabeth City, NC 27907, or American Parkinson’s Disease Association, 60 Bay Street, Suite 401, Staten Island, NY 10301.

Sarah F. Brabble

Sarah Forbes Brabble, age 85, of 228 Maple Rd., Maple, NC died Monday, November 25, 2002 at Albemarle Hospital. She was born in Currituck Co., NC; daughter of the late John S. and Elizabeth Sawyer Forbes and was the widow of Johnny Brabble. She was a member of Rehoboth Baptist Church.

Mrs. Brabble is survived by several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be conducted on Friday, November 29, 2002 at 2:00 PM in Rehoboth Baptist Church with Rev. Dale Pace and Rev. Bobby Owens officiating. Burial will follow in the Snowden Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church immediately following the burial.

Steven Craig McGarvey

Manteo, NC - Steven Craig McGarvey, Sr., 45, died Monday, May 31, 2004 at his residence. Mr. McGarvey was born in Malone, NY and was a former mechanic and truck driver for Coastal Contractors. He was the son of the late Kenneth McGarvey and the late Gertrude Niles McGarvey and the husband of Gail Manning McGarvey of the home.

Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, Michael McGarvey of Malone, NY and Steven, G. McGarvey, Jr., of the residence; two step-daughters, Heather Gilmet of Saranac Lake, NY and Nancy Nixon of Kitty Hawk; Hazel Duboise of Franklin, NC and Patricia Blanchard of Saranac Lake, NY; one brother, Kenneth McGarvey also of Saranac Lake, NY and four grandchildren.

A funeral service and burial will be held at a later date in New York.

Lewis B. Blanchard, Jr.

Lewis Beacher Blanchard, Jr., 63, of 270 North Indiantown Road, Shawboro, NC, died Monday, November 25, 2002 at Albemarle Hospital. He was born in Maple, NC, the son of Ruby Carawan Blanchard of Barco, NC and the late Lewis Beacher Blanchard, Sr. and was the husband of Rosa Roberts Blanchard of the home. He was a retired automotive school teacher with the Currituck County High School and was a member of the Emmanuel Baptist Church.

Besides his wife and mother, Mr. Blanchard is survived by three daughters, Becky Thompson of Rockford, MI, Karen Allen of Buzzard’s Bay, MA, and Donna Perdue of Shawboro, NC; one son, William Blanchard of Elizabeth City, NC; three sisters, Ann Wendling of Eagle Rock, VA, Anita Williams of Virginia Beach, VA, and Carolyn Litchfield of Clinton, MD; four brothers, James Blanchard of Virginia Beach, VA, Wayne Blanchard of Gatesville, NC, Thomas Blanchard of Harbinger, NC, and Edwin Blanchard of Cary, NC; and five grandchildren.

A funeral service will be conducted on Friday, November 29, 2002 at 11:00 am at Emmanuel Baptist Church by the Rev. Ed Hawkins. Burial will be at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church immediately following the service and at other times at the residence.
