ALICE DAWSON BERRY
Retired accountant

Alice Dawson Berry, 64, of 102 Hickory Hill Drive, Grandy, NC died Monday, October 14, 2002, in the Barco Sentara Nursing Home. She was born in Appalachia, Virginia to the late Harper and Zelma Hocutt Dawson. Mrs. Berry was a retired accountant and a member of the Coinjock Baptist Church.

She is survived by a daughter, Tina Berry Craddock and husband, Steven, of Grandy, NC, a son, Ellis Harper Berry and wife, Virginia, of Greensboro, NC; two sisters, Laura Catherine Fortune of Alta Vista, VA and Ruth Midgette of Grimesland, NC; a brother, Lewis Dawson of Jonesboro, GA and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Michael Robert Berry.

Graveside services will be in the Hampton Cemetery, Waterlily, Thursday, October 17, 2002 at 11:00am by the Rev. Charles H. Wellons. The family will receive friends and relatives at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City Wednesday evening from 7:00 until 8:30pm and at other times at their residence, 102 Hickory Hill Drive, Grandy. NC. Twiford Funeral Home, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, NC is in charge of arrangements.

Clayton L. Armstrong

Clayton Luther Armstrong, 77, of 721 Creek Road, Elizabeth City, NC died Wednesday, June 26, 2002 at his residence. Born in Tyrrell County, NC, he was the son of the late Roland R. and Beatrice A. Armstrong and was the husband of Thelma Brewer Armstrong of the residence. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army having served in World War II and was a recipient of the Purple Heart.

Besides his wife, Mr. Armstrong is survived by five daughters, Helen Armstrong Enbrock of Denver, CO, Beatrice Armstrong Minshew of Mobile, AL, Patricia Brewer Hankins of Goldsboro, NC, Theresa Brewer Van Aulen of Lancaster, PA, and Kathy Armstrong Howard of Austin, TX; three sons, Henry Clay Armstrong of Zebulon, NC, James Bill Brewer, Jr. of Statesville, NC, and Freddy Arnold Brewer of Elizabeth City, NC; two sisters, Sadie Armstrong Hobbs and Elma Armstrong Onley both of Elizabeth City, NC; one brother, Robert Armstrong of Elizabeth City, NC; sixteen grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be conducted on Saturday, June 29, 2002 at 2:00 PM at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witness by Ed Spence, Minister. The family will be at the residence.

Kimberly Ann Zarko
Pittsburg, PA native

Kimberly Ann Zarko, age 40, of 1012 Maple Street, Elizabeth City, NC, died Monday, August 11, 2003. Kimberly, a native of Pittsburg, PA, was the daughter of Joseph D. Beining, Sr., of Jacksonville, FL, and the late Cheryl Wolf Beining, and was the companion of Elbert Andrew Johnson of the residence. She was a Certified Nursing Assistant with Albemarle Home Health Care and had worked at Little Sisters Nursing Home in Pittsburg, PA, and was a Catholic.

She is also survived by four daughters, Kala A. Zarko of Pittsburgh, PA, Camre Johnson, Jaquellya Johnson and Sedonia Johnson all of the residence; two sons Deroca Johnson and Feronte Johnson both of the residence; two sisters, Melissa Battles and Michelle McHugh, both of Jacksonville, FL; a half sister, Sherrie Senchisen of Pittsburg, PA; and two brothers, Joseph D. Beining, Jr., and Donald Beining both of Jacksonville, FL.

Funeral services will be Friday, August 15, 2003 at 2:00 PM at Twiford’s Northside Chapel. Burial will follow in New Hollywood Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday evening from 7:00 to 8:30 PM and at other times at the residence.

Kathleen Hagan Zeiss
Evanston, IL native

Kathleen Hagan Zeiss, age 55, of 257 Neck Road, Shiloh, NC, died Tuesday, July 8, 2003, at her residence. Mrs. Zeiss, was the wife of Fred Ralph Zeiss, Jr., of the residence and the daughter of Ellen Sennett Hagan of the residence and the late Elmer E. Hagan. She was the owner and manager of several ladies clothing store and a member of the Society of Friends.

Besides her husband and mother she is survived by two daughters, Katherine Zeiss of Santa Barbara, CA and Jennifer Zeiss Keith of Alpharetta, GA; two sons, Michael Ralph Zeiss of Green Brae, CA and William Patrick Zeiss of Raleigh, NC; a sister, Sue Hagan Zimmerman of Mill Valley, CA; and three grandchildren.

No services are planned at this time. Memorial donations may be made to the American Friends Service Committee, 1501 Cherry Street, Philadelphia, PA 19002

Justin K. Yopp

Avon, NC - Justin Keith Yopp, 18, died on Wednesday, March 3, 2004 in Salvo. Justin was born in Elizabeth City, NC, attended St. John’s United Methodist Church and was a 2003 graduate of Cape Hatteras High School. He was the son of Donald Keith Yopp of Avon and Teresa Miller Midgett and husband Barry, also of Avon.

Besides, his father, mother, and step-father, survivors include one step-sister, Amanda Midgett also of Avon.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the St. John’s United Methodist Church on Saturday, March 6, 2004 at 2:00 PM. Burial will follow in the Miller Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends at St. John’s on Friday, March 5th from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM.

Twiford’s Island Chapel, Hatteras, is assisting the family with these arrangements.

Richard Younkman

Camden, NC - Richard D. Younkman, HMC USN RETIRED, died April 25, 2004 in Sentara Nursing Home in Currituck County, NC. He was born in Detroit, Michigan, on February 20, 1918. He also retired from the Virginia State Health Department as a registered sanitarian and health educator in 1980.

Mr. Younkman’s Navy service included tours aboard the USS Chaumont, USS Henderson, USS Blackhawk, USS Seekonk, USS Tumult, and USS Buckley. He also served at the US Naval Hospital, Newport, RI, and the US Naval Hospital, Canacao, Philippines. Other service included Marine Detachment, Tientsin, China, Recruiting Duty, Manhattan, NY, and District Medical Office, Philadelphia, PA. Some of his service awards and medals include the China Service Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre of War, Good Conduct Medal, American Defense, Victory Medal, American Campaign, Korean Service, WWII Service, and Philippine Liberation.

After retiring from the Navy, Mr. Younkman continued to serve in various organizations until his death. He was Past Regional President of the East Coast Region of the Fleet Reserve Association, and Past President of Branch 60, Norfolk, VA, and Past President of Branch 40, Chesapeake, VA Fleet Reserve Associations. He was also a Past Commander and life member of Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 26, Chesapeake, VA. Other life memberships include American Legion Post 204, Norfolk, VA and the Virginia Government Employees Association.

For fifty-two years, Mr. Younkman was active in the Boy Scouts of America! As an adult leader, he served as Cubmaster, Scoutmaster for three different troops, Campmaster, District Training Chairman of three districts in the Tidewater Council, and District Commissioner. He was honored with the following awards: Cubmasters Key, Scouters Key, Scoutmasters Key, District Award of Merit, Commissioners Key, and the Silver Beaver.

Survivors include his wife of forty-four years, Jane H. Younkman, and two sons, George V. Younkman and Richard Younkman, Jr. of Lester, PA. He is also survived by five grandchildren: Greg, David, Kathleen, Kristen, and Marie, and four great grandchildren: Jacob, Caleb, Kyle, and Gianna Rose.

A funeral service will be conducted at Twiford’s Funeral Home in Elizabeth City, NC on Tuesday, April 27, 2004, at 11:00 AM. A Fleet Reserve Ritual will be conducted by the Fleet Reserve Association, Branch 40, Chesapeake, VA, and led by W. Ralph Holcombe. The Reverend David Combs will also assist. The family will receive friends at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel on Monday, April 26, 2004, from 7:00 to 8:30 PM.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Tidewater Council Boy Scouts of America, 1032 Heatherwood Drive, Virginia Beach, VA 23455.

Willard J. Wilson

Shiloh, NC - Willard Journeay Wilson, age 85, of 1264 South 343, Shiloh, NC, died Thursday, October 2, 2003 at his residence. He was born in Currituck County, NC, son of the late Samuel and Myrtle Crain Wilson. He was the husband of Mildred Bray Wilson of the residence. Mr. Wilson was a retired machinist with Norfolk Naval Shipyard, he also served in the Merchant Marines as a Warrant Officer. He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, and Hall Masonic Lodge # 53 AF & AM, Shawboro, where he was a Past Master and served as secretary for many years. He was a member of the York Rite Bodies and also a member of Order of Eastern Star Chapter #319 where he had served as Past Worthy Patron.

Besides his wife Mr. Wilson is survived by two sons, David Wilson of Alexandria, VA, and Gerald Wilson of Williamston, NC; four grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Saturday, October 4, 2003 in Wesley United Methodist Church at 2:00 PM with the Rev. David Moehring officiating.

Burial will follow in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery with Masonic Rites. The family will receive friends Friday evening 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel 405 East church St. Elizabeth City NC and at the residence all other times. Flowers are welcomed, however anyone wishing to, may make contributions to Wesley United Methodist Church, 152 Alder Branch Road, Shiloh, NC 27974. Sandra Wilson

MANTEO, NC - SANDRA CATHERINE WILSON, 56, died on Wednesday, October 29, 2003 at her residence. Ms. Wilson was born in Tarboro, NC and was a Registered Nurse for Edgecomb County Hospital and later worked for the NCDOT and was a certified EMT. She was the daughter of the late William Wilson and Mrs. Mary Grimmer Wilson of Tarboro.

Besides her mother, she is survived by one son, Warren Langley, Jr. of West Palm Beach, FL, and of Manteo; one sister, Joyce Wilson of Maryland; one brother, Jerry Wilson of Tarboro, four grandchildren and significant other, William H. “Buster” Braddy of Manteo.

A Service of Remembrance will be held on Saturday, November 1st at 6:00 PM at Twiford’s Colony Chapel, Manteo. Memorial Donations may be made to the Dare County Hospice, P.O. Box 1000, Manteo, NC 27954.

Arrie Wilson

Hertford, NC - Arrie Lee Wilson, age 75, of 1005 Woodville Road, Hertford, NC, died Friday, April 9, 2004, in the Albemarle Hospital. He born in Pasquotank County, NC, son of the late John “Jack” Lewis Wilson, and Margaret Ivey Wilson, and was the husband of the late Alice Gertrude Bundy Wilson. Mr. Wilson was a retired farmer and he was a Baptist.

He is survived by three daughters, Margaret Sawyer and Connie Duncan both of Hertford, NC; and Gertrude “Trudy” Miller of Chesapeake, VA; one son, Lee Wilson of Hertford, NC; three sisters, Lottie Lamb and Gertrude Colson both of Hertford, NC, and Nell Jordan of Richmond, VA; one brother, John Wilson of Elizabeth City, NC; thirteen grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. He was predeceased by three sisters, Lizzie Peele, Evelyn Eure, Grace Barnes and Lina Smithwick; and three brothers, Elbert Wilson, Wilbert Wilson, and Raymond Ivey.

A funeral service will be Monday, April 12, 2004, at 2:00 PM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Max Edwards officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the residence of the daughter, Margaret Sawyer, 987 Woodville Road, Hertford, NC. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, NC, is in charge of arrangements.

Michael Wilson

Michael Earl Wilson, 37, of 136 Edgewater Dr., Grandy, NC died Saturday, August 21, 2004 as a result of a boating accident. He was born in Portsmouth, VA to Karen B. Eagleton of Petersburg, VA and the late Earl Curt Wilson and was the husband of Rebecca Coffman Wilson. Mr. Wilson was the owner/operator of Sunrise Maintenance.

Besides his wife and mother, Mr. Wilson is survived by two sons, Christopher Wilson of Grandy, NC and Tyler Wilson of Greensboro, NC; maternal grandparents, Lewis and Carrie Burris. Also, he is survived by an aunt, Sylvia Wilson, an aunt Brenda Baker, an aunt and uncle, Dennis and Navieda Burris, four cousins, Amber Burris, Karina Burris, Matthew Baker, and Jayne Baker and other extended family. Besides his father, he was preceded in death by his grandfather, Houston Curt Wilson, grandmother, Lonna Mae Wilson and a sister, Jennifer Eagleton.

A gathering of family and friends to celebrate Mike’s life will be Sunday, August 29, 2004, from 1:00 until 4:00pm at the residence, 136 Edgewater Drive, Grandy, NC. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Twiford Funeral Home, 1115 N. Road St., Elizabeth City, NC is assisting the Wilson family.

George C. Wilson, Sr.

Elizabeth City, NC - George Carlie Wilson, Sr., 75, of 113 Grove Street, Elizabeth City, NC, died Tuesday, October 15, 2002 at Sentara Center – Currituck. He was born in Lumberton, NC, the son of the late Thomas McCoy and Fletta Mae Stogner Wilson and was the widower of Addie Mae Forbis Wilson. He was a retired carpenter, a member of the Honor Guard with the William Clarence Jackson V. F. W. Post 6060, and was a veteran of the U. S. Navy having served during World War II.

Mr. Wilson is survived by four sons, Wayne Wilson and wife Judy of Elizabeth City, NC, Ray Wilson of Jupiter, FL, Michael Wilson and wife Delene of Wake Forest, NC, and Gary Wilson and wife Phyllis of Dunn, NC; ten grandchildren and six great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Carla Wilson; a son, George Wilson, Jr.; two sisters, Edna Probst and Helen Rogers; and three brothers, Alfred, L. W. and Arthur Wilson.

A funeral service will be conducted on Thursday, October 17, 2002 at 3:00 pm in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. F. Joe Griffith officiating and military honors provided by the William Clarence Jackson V. F. W. Post 6060. Burial will be in New Hollywood Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the lobby of the funeral home immediately following the service, at the funeral home on Wednesday from 7:00 to 8:00 pm, and at other times at the residence of Wayne and Judy Wilson, 113 Grove Street, Elizabeth City, NC.

LILLIAN CRAIN WHITSON
Native of Chesapeake, VA

Lillian Crain Whitson, 84, of Waterlily Rd., Coinjock, NC died Wednesday, April 14, 2004, in the Sentara Barco Nursing Center. She was born in Chesapeake, VA to the late Walter Royal and Sarah White Crain and was the widow of John Woodrow Whitson.

Mrs. Whitson is survived by a daughter, Dorothy Whitson Henley of Waterlily and a son, Wilbert Woodrow Whitson of Waterlily, NC; five grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

Graveside services will be conducted Friday, April 16, 2004, at 4:00pm in the Hampton Cemetery, Waterlily, by Rev. C. H. Wellons. Twiford Funeral Home, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, NC is in charge of arrangements. The family will be at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Bobby and Dorothy W. Henley, 1135 Waterlily Rd., Coinjock, NC.

Chris Wingenroth

Nags Head, NC - Chris Cusano Wingenroth, 42, died Friday, June 25, 2004 at his residence. Mr. Wingenroth was born in Ephrata, PA and graduated from Rolling Road School in Maryland. Prior to his illness, Chris was a resident of the Dare County Group Home in Manteo for 10 years and participated in A.D.A.P., also located in Manteo. He was a member of the Kitty Hawk United Methodist Church. He was the son of Vernon C. and Gloria M. Wingenroth of Nags Head.

Besides his parents, he is survived by two brothers, Michael C. Wingenroth and wife, Theresa of Kill Devil Hills and Jeffrey L. Wingenroth and his wife, Susanna of Cape Coral, FL; four nieces, Kristen, Lauren, Leah, Emily and one nephew, Jordan.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Kitty Hawk United Methodist Church on Tuesday, June 29, 2004 at 7:00 PM with Rev. Spotswood Graves and Rev. Richard Stone officiating. The family will receive friends at Twiford’s Colony Chapel on Monday, June 28th from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Kitty Hawk United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 900, Kitty Hawk, NC 27949 or to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, National Headquarters, 3300 East Sunrise Drive, Tucson, AZ 85718-3208.

Catherine Winkler
Native of Grafton, VA

Catherine Yingling Winkler, age 74, of 1383 South 343, Shiloh, NC, died Wednesday, October 22, 2003, at the Albemarle Hospital. Mrs. Winkler, a native of Grafton, VA, was the widow of Edward Joseph Winkler and the daugher of the late Caroll Robert Yingling and Nettie Hornsby Yingling. She was a homemaker and a member of Wesley United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Winkler is survived by a son, Jonathan Edward Pullin, and wife Krista, of Beachwood, NJ; a daughter, Kathy Lee Pullin, Grant’s Pass, OR; three grandchildren, Jeremey, Mark, and Michael all of Longview, WA; and five great grandchildren, Nicholas, Maegan, Rachel, Alissa, and Kayla.

A memorial service will be Saturday, October 25, 2003, at 11:00 AM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC, with the Rev. David Moehring officiating. The family will receive friends at the residence Friday, October 24 after noon and after the service in the lobby of the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to Wesley United Methodist Church, 188 South 343, Camden, NC 27921.

Eleanor Winlsow
Native of Pasquotank Co.

Eleanor Ralph Winslow, age 94, of 1535 North Road Street, Elizabeth City, NC died at Albemarle Hospital on Saturday evening, November 22, 2003. Born in Pasquotank County, NC, she was the daughter of the late Joe and Clotilda Munden Ralph, and was the widow of Hallet Jeptha Winslow. She was retired from the Elizabeth City Hosiery Mill and attended Berea Baptist Church.

Mrs. Winslow is survived by: one daughter Margaret Pritchard of Elizabeth City; one son Harry E. Winslow and wife Polly of Chesapeake, VA; six grandchildren, Barbara Fitchett of Elizabeth City, NC, Craig Winslow of Bethesda, MD, Billy Pritchard of Elizabeth City, NC, Beth Hibben of Tampa, FL, Pam Collins of Camden, NC and Chuck Pritchard of Elizabeth City, NC; and seven great grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted Tuesday, November 25, 2003, at 11:00 AM in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday evening, November 24, from 7:00 to 8:00 PM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel. At other times the family will be at her residence. Hallet Jeptha Winslow

Elizabeth City, NC - Mr. Hallet Jeptha Winslow, age 93, of 1535 N. Road Street, Elizabeth City, NC died Wednesday, February 19, 2003 at Albemarle Hospital. Mr. Winslow was born in Pasquotank County, the son of the late Jeptha and Maria Antoinette Tuttle Winslow and was the husband of Eleanor Ralph Winslow, which they would have celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary in April. He was a machinist for 31 years with the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Portsmouth, VA and was a Baptist.

Besides his wife, Mr. Winslow is survived by one daughter, Margaret Pritchard of Elizabeth City, NC; one son, Harry E. Winslow and wife, Polly, of Chesapeake, VA; six grandchildren, Barbara Fitchett, Billy Pritchard and Chuck Pritchard of Elizabeth City, NC; Craig Winslow of Bethesda, MD; Beth Hibben of Tampa, FL; and Pam Collins of Camden, NC; and seven great grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted Saturday, February 22, 2003, at 11:00 AM at Westlawn Memorial Park with the Rev. Glenn Greenway officiating. The family will receive friends Friday, February 21, 2003 from 7:00 to 8:00 PM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel and other times at the residence. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to one’s favorite charity.

Pauline Winslow

Pauline Bateman Winslow, 82, of the 1000 block of Northside Road, Elizabeth City, NC died Friday, December 26, 2003, in the Albemarle Hospital. Mrs. Winslow was born in the community of Burgess in Perquimans County. In her early years, she attended Burgess school and was taught there by her aunt, Pauline Spruill, for whom she was named. She later graduated from Central High School, where she played on the championship girl’s basketball team. Mrs. Winslow was preceded in death by her parents, George R. Bateman and Minnie Matthews Bateman, brothers, Wade M. Bateman and Grant R. Bateman. She was a member of the West Road Church of Christ, Chesapeake, VA.

She is survived by her husband, J. Aubrey Winslow, who loved, indeed adored her for more than sixty years; twenty five of those years in various locations during his 30 years in the US Coast Guard. A sister, Pattie B. Townsend of Salisbury, MD. and her two daughters, Nancy Brittingham, her son, Mike Davis and wife, Kim and their two young children, Morgan and Molly, also Susan N. Townsend of Owings Mills, MD. A nephew, David Bateman of Chesapeake, VA and his four daughters, Rebecca B. Raper and husband, Jody, and their two quite young daughters, Dakota and Willow, and daughters, Stephanie, Michelle and Elizabeth Bateman all of Chesapeake, VA.

Mrs. Winslow began her walk with the Lord at the Bethlehem Church of Christ, Hertford, NC. As she moved from place to place with her husband, she taught children of various ages in Bible Schools. Having sung with Roanoke Bible College’s Choral Club in the early days of its history, Mrs. Winslow put what she learned in that experience to work as she served the Lord’s church. She led the song services and taught classes in vacation bible schools and with her husband was youth sponsors for teens. She formed and directed youth choirs in widely separated places such as St. Louis, MO., Troy, IN., Elizabeth City, NC and Chesapeake, VA. She was known and loved by many and was called affectionately “Miss Polly”.

Funeral services will be conducted Monday, December 29, 2003, at 11:00am in the Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, Church St., by Rev. David Bateman and Mathew Knight. Burial will be in the West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends and relatives in the lobby of the funeral home immediately following the funeral service and at other times at their residence, 1001 Northside Rd., Elizabeth City.
