Eleanor Geiser Wirth

MANTEO, NC - ELEANOR GEISER WIRTH, 87. of Manteo, died, Monday, October 4, 2004, in Nags Head. Mrs. Wirth was born in Queens, New York and was a member of the Catholic Church and a homemaker.

She was the daughter of the late Bernard and Mary Geiser and the wife of the late Charles Wirth.

Surviving are two sons; Charles Wirth, Jr of Wading River, N.Y. and Douglas Wirth of Kill Devil Hills, one sister; Gertrude Lawlor of Dix Hills, N.Y., Five grandchildren; Christopher Wirth, Charles Wirth, Ryan Wirth, Colleen Hogan and Meryl Wirth. Mrs. Wirth was also survived by her special companion Harry Palmer of Manteo.

A Service of Remembrance will be held Friday, October 15, 2004, at 11:30 a.m. in Calverton National Cemetery Long Island, N.Y. Twiford Colony Chapel Manteo is handling arrangements.

Jeannette Wise

Manteo, NC - Jeannette Baines Wise, 82, of 407 Sir Walter Raleigh Street, Manteo, NC, died Saturday, September 25, 2004 at her residence. She was born in Gates County, NC to the late Lee Roy and Gussie Kelley Baines. Mrs. Wise was the wife of Robert Willis Wise of the home, and was a member of the First Assembly of God.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Wise is survived by a daughter, Elaine Wise Minton of Point Harbor, NC; a son, Bobby Wise of the residence; two sisters, Dorothy Judkins and Minnie Robertson both of Suffolk, VA; three grandchildren, Derek Minton and wife Kathy, Laura Davies and husband Matt, and Jason Minton; and four great grandchildren, Kimberly and Michael Minton and Anna and Kelly Davies.

A funeral service will be conducted on Monday, September 27, 2004 at 11:00 AM at First Assembly of God by Pastor Ron Denham. Burial will follow at Manteo Cemetery. The family will receive friends and relatives at the Twiford’s Colony Chapel on Sunday from 7:00 to 8:30 PM and at other times at the residence.

Edith Barnett

BUCKINGHAM, VA / FRISCO, NC - EDITH WILLIS FARROW BARNETT, 97, of Buckingham, VA and formerly of Frisco, NC died Tuesday, August 3, 2004 at her residence. Mrs. Barnett, born in Portsmouth Island, located in Carteret County, NC, was a homemaker and one of the founding members of Frisco Assembly of God. She was the daughter of the late William J. and Vandilia Beasley Willis and the widow of Sherman W. Barnett. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Zelma J. Brinson and a son, Murray L. Farrow.

Mrs. Barnett is survived by two grandsons, William Brinson, Sr. of Buckingham, VA and Michael Brinson of Norfolk, VA; four great-grandchildren, William Brinson, Jr., Steven Brinson and wife, Mary all of Buckingham, VA, Matthew Brinson of Norfolk, VA and Laura Brinson of SC; and a loving granddaughter-in-law, Judy Brinson of Buckingham, VA.

Funeral services will be held at Frisco Assembly of God on Saturday, August 7, 2004 at 11:00 am with Rev. Roger Barnett and Rev. Rick Sonnycalf officiating. Burial will follow in the Barnett Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church on Friday evening from 7:00 to 8:30 pm.

Sylvia Jones Witt
Resident of Elizabeth City, NC

Sylvia Jones Witt, age 64, of 121 Ferry Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died Sunday, May 25, 2003 at Albemarle Hospital. She was born in Pasquotank County, NC, daughter of Pearl J. Jones and the late Willard Jones and the wife of Donald W. Witt of the residence. She was a member of Berea Baptist Church and worked as a secretary for J. W. Jones Lumber Company.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Witt is survived by a daughter, Tina Mihaloew; a son, Eddie Natoli; two step daughters, Kim Witt and Stephanie Lawson; a sister, Angela Simpson; a brother, Marion Jones; seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held Wednesday, May 28, 2003 at 2:00 PM in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Glenn Greenway officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home, Tuesday evening from 7:00 until 8:00 and at other times at the residence. Jon Vanscoy

Elizabeth City, NC - Jon Vanscoy, age 27, of 103 Bobwhite Drive, Elizabeth City, NC, died Thusday, July 15, 2004. He was a native of Elizabeth City, NC, and was the son of Harry Elsworth Vanscoy and Twila Jean Kesling Vanscoy. He was the husband of Melanie Jo Culpepper Vanscoy of the residence. He worked with the Great Lakes Dock and Dredging Company and was a former employee with the Norfolk Dredging Company. He was a member of Salem Baptist Church and the I.U.O.E. Local 25.

Besides his wife and parents Mr. Vanscoy is survived by one son, Blake Everett Vanscoy of Elizabeth City, NC; two sisters, Barbara V. Vogt of Elizabeth City, NC, and Lois V. White of Edenton, NC; one brother, Joel Vanscoy of Chesapeake, VA.

A memorial service will be Sunday, July 18, 2004, at 3:00 PM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church Street with the Rev. Clay Manos officiating. The family will join friends in the lobby of the funeral home immediately following the service. At other times the family will be at the residence of his parents, Harry and Twila Vanscoy, 113 Nancy Drive, Elizabeth City, NC. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Scholarship Fund for his son, Blake E. Vanscoy, % BB&T; Bank, PO Box 2366, Elizabeth City, NC 27909. Alfred "A. C." Shannonhouse

Alfred Carver “A.C.” Shannonhouse, 91, formerly of the 105 South Griffin St., Elizabeth City, NC died Sunday, December 28, 2003, in a Charlotte NC nursing home. He was born in Perquimans County, NC to the late James Watson and Ella Goodman Shannonhouse and was the widower of the late Hannah Stephens Shannonhouse. Mr. Shannonhouse was retired from the Elizabeth City U.S. Coast Guard Air Station as an electrician and was a member of the First United Methodist Church.

Mr. Shannonhouse is survived by a daughter, Gail S. Buckley and husband Dr. Thomas Buckley of Charlotte, NC; a son, James S. “Jim” Shannonhouse and wife Sandra of Arlington, TX; seven grandchildren, Ed, Teresa, Kelly, Neil, Mike, Lori and Denisse; and nine great grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, December 30, 2003 at 1:00pm at West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery with Rev. Clyde Denny officiating. The family will receive friends at the Twiford Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, NC Monday evening from 7:00 until 8:30. Edward J. Wolfe

AVON, NC - EDWARD JOHN WOLFE, 71, of Avon, NC died Thursday, August 7, 2003 at his residence. Mr. Wolfe, born in Bronx, NY, was retired from AT&T; as a government contractor. He was a veteran, having serviced in the U.S. Air Force and was a Catholic.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Josephine Guarino Wolfe.

Mr. Wolfe is survived by two daughters, Julia and Laura; two sons, Joseph and Edward, Jr.; and three grandchildren, Shannon, Hannah and Megan.

A graveside service will be held in the Hatteras Community Cemetery on Sunday, August 10, 2003 at 3:00 pm with Rev. David Waterfield officiating. The family will receive friends at the Cape Hatteras Baptist Church, Frisco, on Saturday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.

Thomas James Wolfe

Knotts Island, NC – Thomas James Wolfe, 58, died June 9, 2004 at home with his family at his side. Mr. Wolfe was born in Norfolk to the late Edna Des Marais Wolfe. He was a veteran, having served in the USMC. Mr. Wolfe worked as a supervisor in the Sheet Metal Shop of a loving and caring company, Bay Mechanical, and was a member of the Knights of Pythias, Chapter 10. In addition to his mother, he was predeceased by his loving aunt, Florence Des Marais who helped raise him.

Survivors include his bride of 32 years, Doris Ann Davis Wolfe; two daughters, Debra Ann Tando and husband Michael of Knotts Island and Sheila M. Huber and husband Thomas of Chesapeake; three sons, Jack Poff and wife, Marie of Knotts Island, Richard Poff and wife, Anna of Chesapeake, and Michael Poff and wife Dana of Norfolk; one brother, Richard “Dickie” Wolfe of Norfolk; a very special granddaughter, who was like a daughter, Ruby Darnell Gaddis and her husband Casey of Knotts Island; and ten other grandchildren and six great grandchildren, his beloved mother-in-law, Ruby W. Davis of Knotts Island and extended family and faithful dog “Shea”.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 2:00 pm at Knotts Island United Methodist Church with Pastor Robert Green and Frank Jennings officiating. Burial will follow at Knotts Island Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Twiford’s Colonial Chapel, Chesapeake on Friday from 7:00 until 8:30 pm. In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made to the Knotts Island UMC or the American Cancer Society.

Douglas Wolfert

Elizabeth City, NC - Douglas John Wolfert, age 64, of 525 Liberator Street, Elizabeth City, NC, died Wednesday, March 3, 2004 at his residence. He was born in Sheboygan, WI, son of the late Douglas Wolfert and Nelda Rimkus Wolfert. He was the husband of Connie Gray Wolfert of the residence. Mr. Wolfert served in the US Navy for 20 years, and was retired from the BAE systems in Chesapeake, VA. He was Catholic.

Besides his wife he is survived by two daughters, Kirsten Williamson of Lovettsville, VA, and Lisa Cullipher of Hertford, NC; one sister, Jarleth Hermann of WI; one brother Timothy Wolfert of WI; two grandchildren, Darrell Johnson and Bobby Williamson; several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be conducted Saturday, March 6, 2004 in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery at 10:30 AM with the Father Jim Buchholz, with Military Honors by the VFW Post 6060. The family will be at the residence, 525 Liberator Street, Elizabeth City, NC. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Robert V. Womack
Floyd County, GA native

Robert Vergil Womack, age 63 of 1205 A Byrd Street, Elizabeth City, NC, died Tuesday, January 27, 2004, at the Albemarle Hospital. Mr. Womack, a native of Floyd County, GA, was the husband of Martha Louise Thompson Womack of the residence and the son of the late Emmette Jasper Womack and Arrie Rebecca Jinkins. He was a retired truck driver and attended The Salvation Army Church.

Besides his wife he is survived by a brother, Jackie Womack of Florida; and sever nieces and nephews.

Lena Ballance

Lena Tarkington Ballance, age 64, of 750 Shawboro Road, Shawboro, NC, died Friday, March 26, 2004 at the Albemarle Hospital in Elizabeth City, NC. A native of Pasquotank County, NC, she was the daughter of the late Millard Elmer and Evie Simpson Tarkington, and the wife of Robert C. Ballance of the residence. Mrs. Ballance was a homemaker and a member of Providence Baptist Church.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Ballance is survived by: two sons Randy Ballance of Moyock, NC, and Bob Ballance of Cartersville, GA; three sisters, Kay Trueblood and Janice Jones, both of Elizabeth City, NC, and Christine Stokley and husband Jerry of West Point, VA; two brothers, Edward Tarkington and wife Jean of Elizabeth City, NC, and Clifford Tarkington and wife Julia of Newbern, NC; and one aunt Mamie Brickhouse of Columbia, NC. Mrs. Ballance was predeceased by: one son, Ricky Ballance; two sisters, June Tarkington and Ann Dunn; and three brothers, Marvin, Millard, and Ronnie Tarkington.

Graveside services will be conducted Monday, March 29, 2004, at 11:00 AM in Moyock Cemetery with the Rev. Charles Wellons officiating. The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 7:00 to 8:00 PM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church, Elizabeth City, NC. At other times the family will be at the home of Phyllis Taylor, on Sanderlin Road in Currituck County, NC.

Annie Wood

Annie Bell Alexander Wood, 93, of 1700 West Ehringhaus Street, Elizabeth City, NC, died Sunday, January 12, 2003 at Winslow Memorial Home. She was born in Elizabeth City, NC, the daughter of the late John Bush and Martha Leola Weston Alexander and was the widow of Benjamin F. Wood. She was retired from Davis’s Nursing Home in Chesapeake, VA after 16 years of service and was a member of Grace Baptist Temple in Chesapeake, VA.

Mrs. Wood is survived by one daughter, Deborah Dodson of Lanham, MD; one son, Donald R. Wood of Chesapeake, VA; one niece, Mazie Parker of Elizabeth City, NC and three grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted on Tuesday, January 14, 2003 at 11:00 AM at Old Hollywood Cemetery. The family will be at the residence of Edgar and Mazie Parker, 1044 U. S. 17 South, Elizabeth City, NC.

Leslie White Wood, 87, of 1509 Crescent Drive, Elizabeth City died Friday morning, March 7, 2003, in the Albemarle Hospital. He was born in Pasquotank County, NC to the late Jesse Edward Wood and the late Glennie White Wood. Mr. Wood was president of The Style Center, a member of the Mt. Hermon United Methodist Church, a member of the Improved Order of Red Men, Tribe #8, a member of the Pasquotank County Ruritan Club, a member of the Woodmen of the World and was a founding member and former treasurer of the Downtown Business Association.

Mr. Wood is survived by his wife, Ruby Lane N. Wood of the home, a daughter, Becky W. Davis and husband C.W., of Chesapeake, VA., three grandsons, Erich H. Davis of Elizabeth City, NC, Brian W. Davis and wife, Pam, of Chesapeake, Va. and Troy S. Davis of Chesapeake, VA., three great grandchildren, Chandler Davis, Blake Davis, and Hayden Davis all of Elizabeth City, NC, three step children, Stanley Newbold and wife, Retha, of Durham, NC, Paul Newbold and wife, Cheryl, of Elizabeth City, NC and Charles Newbold and wife Carol, of Pittsboro, NC; six step grandchildren and five step great grandchildren; a sister, Elizabeth Duncan of Elizabeth City and a brother Ralph Wood of Elizabeth City. Mr. Wood was preceded in death by his first wife, Alma M. Wood, three brothers and one sister.

Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, March 9, 2003, at 2:00pm in the Twiford Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, NC by the Rev. Haywood Gillikin. Burial will follow in the West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the residence, 1509 Crescent Drive, Elizabeth City. Ralph Edward wood

Ralph Edward Wood, age 83, of 1376 US 17 South, Elizabeth City, NC, died Tuesday, December 9, 2003 at Albemarle Hospital. He was born in Pasquotank County, son of the late Jesse Edward and Glennie White Wood and was the husband of Eleanor Eure Wood of the residence. He was a member of Mount Herman United Methodist Church, and retired owner/ operator of Wood’s Repair Center.

Besides his wife, Mr. Wood is survived by a daughter, Alma Jean Paschal and husband Bill of Chesapeake, VA; two sons, Ralph Edward Wood, Jr. and wife Donna of Waynesboro, VA, and Jesse Eure Wood and wife Rhonda of Elizabeth City, NC; a sister, Elizabeth W. Duncan and husband Ed of Elizabeth City, NC; five grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Glennie Bell Downer, and four brothers, Gerald, Leslie, Orville, and Waverly Wood.

A funeral service will be held Friday, December 12, 2003 at 11:00 am in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Haywood Gillikin officiating. Burial will be in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 7:00 until 8:00 and at other times at the residence. Clifton Burgess

Clifton Burgess, age 80, of 950 South 343, Shiloh, NC, died Monday, November 10, 2003, at Albemarle Hospital. Mr. Burgess, a native of Camden County, was the widower of Mary Gibson Burgess and a son of the late Ralph N. Burgess, Sr., and Mary Blackburn Burgess. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran, a retired foreman from the Virginia Department of Trans-portation, and a member of Shiloh Baptist Church.

Survivors include three daughters, Nan Hurst of Florida, Carol Ann Collins of Texas, and Teresa Wommer of Pennsylvania; one son, Tom Burgess of Oregon; three sisters, June Forehand, Carolyn Hopper and Isabel Burgess; two brothers, Edward Burgess and Douglas Burgess; twelve grandchildren; and eighteen great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be Wednesday, November 12, 2003 at 4:00 PM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC, with the Rev. Dave Combs officiating. The family will receive friends in the lobby of the funeral home immediately after the service and at other times at the residence of Robert Sawyer, 103 Rosewood Avenue, Elizabeth City, NC.

Virginia Newbern Willingham

Virginia Newbern Willingham, 94, of Elizabeth City, NC died Thursday morning, May 22, 2003, in the John Randolph Nursing Home, Hopewell, Virginia. She was born in Bertie County, NC to the late Alfred E. and Maggie Baker Newbern and was the widow of the late Preston Willingham. Mrs. Willingham was a retired clerk, a member of the Blackwell Memorial Baptist Church and EC Senior Citizen Club.

She is survived by two sons, John F. Williams of Duluth, GA and T. C. “Jack” Williams of Dewitt, VA; three sister-in-laws, Alethia Newbern of Elizabeth City, NC, Josephine Newbern of Ahoskie, NC and Theresa Dail of Hertford, NC.

Graveside services will be conducted Tuesday, May 27, 2003, at 2:00pm in the Ahoskie Cemetery, Ahoskie by Rev. Dr. Bob Crisp. Memorial gifts may be made to the American Cancer Society. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC is in charge of arrangements.

Mildred Burkett

Elizabeth City, NC - Mildred Skinner Burkett, 95, of 1700 West Ehringhaus Street, Elizabeth City, NC died Sunday, June 15, 2003 at Winslow Memorial Home. She was born in Suffolk, VA to the late Theodore and Lina Mae Norfleet Skinner and was the widow of Cecil R. Burkett. She was a member of Parkview Baptist Church, Portsmouth, VA.

Mrs. Burkett is survived by one son, Cecil R. Burkett, Jr. of Camden, NC; five grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara Burkett Tanner.

A memorial service will be conducted on Wednesday, June 18, 2003 at 2:00 PM at Parkview Baptist Church, Hatton Street, Portsmouth, VA. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Parkview Baptist Church of the church of one’s choice. LILLIE MAE BRILEY BUNTING
Retired Public School Teacher

Lillie Mae Briley Bunting, 74, of 152 Puddin Ridge Road, Moyock, NC, died Monday, May 10, 2004, in the Sentara Barco Nursing Home. She was born in Pitt County, NC to the late Alton C. and Blanche Lee Bradley Briley and was the widow of the late Ken Maynard Bunting. Mrs. Bunting was a retired schoolteacher and a member of the Moyock United Methodist Church.

She is survived by two brothers, H. Ray Briley of Washington, NC and Dalton C. Briley of Port Orange, Florida. She was preceded in death by a brother, Curtis L. Briley.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, May 12, 2004, at 11:00am in the Moyock United Methodist Church by Rev. Vic Culberson, Pastor Ron Stewart and Rev. Jim Powell. Burial will be in the Moyock Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends and relatives one hour prior to funeral service at the church. Floyd Jump

Manteo - Floyd Robert Jump, 80, died Wednesday, February 25, 2004 at an Outer Banks Medical Facility in Nags Head. Mr. Jump was born in Johnson County, Tennessee and was a retired Welder for the Department of Transportation Ferry Division and was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He was a Veteran having served in the U.S. Army during WWII. Mr. Jump was the son of the late Carl and Gertrude Jump and was the widower of Esther O’Neal Jump.

Survivors include two daughters, Frances Brinn and Cheryl Simmons both of Manteo; four sons, Robert “Bobby” Jump of Manns Harbor, David Jump, Cecil Jump and Ralph, “R.C.” Jump all of Manteo; two sisters, Flora Hinson and Naomi Carver, both of North Carolina; fourteen grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild; he was preceded in death by one sister, Clara Weaver.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Twiford’s Colony Chapel, Manteo, on Saturday, February 28, 2004 at 1:00 PM with Dr. Jeff Jacobson, President of the Nags Head Branch of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Burial will take place in the Roanoke Island Memorial Gardens. The family will be receiving friends at the funeral home on Friday, February 27 from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM.

Louise Weeks Burnham

Louise Weeks Burnham, 95, 278 Horseshoe Road, South Mills, NC died Friday, June 26, 2003, in the Albemarle Hospital. She was born in Pasquotank County, NC to the late Paul B. Weeks, Sr. and Eunice Williams Weeks and was the widow of the late Isaac Almond Burnham. Mrs. Burnham was a retired seamstress with Supak, a member and former clerk for Ebenezer Baptist Church and a member and past Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, South Mills Chapter #270.

She is survived by a daughter, Myra Gregory and husband, Joe H., of Brandon, FL; a son, Franklin Burnham and wife, Karen, of South Mills, NC; five sisters, Eunice Banks of Ahoskie, NC, Dora Craddock of Virginia Beach, VA, Ida Kitchen of Yale, VA, Irene Woolston of Southerland, IA, and Johnny Stallings of Elizabeth City; three grandchildren and two great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by five brothers, Herbert Weeks, Job Weeks, Paul B. Weeks, Jr., William Roy Weeks, and Charlie W. Weeks. Also, Mrs. Burnham was preceded in death by a grandson, Chris Burnham.

Graveside services will be conducted Saturday, June 28, 2003, at 2:00pm in the South Mills Cemetery by Rev. Frank Thigpen. The family suggests memorial gifts be made to the Ebenezer Baptist Church, P.O. Box 219, South Mills, NC 27976. The family will be at their residence. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC is in charge of funeral arrangements.
