Patricia Wood

Elizabeth City, NC - Patricia Dunbar Wood, age 61, of the 400 block of Firetower Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died Saturday, April 17, 2004, at her residence. A native of Pasquotank County, she was born the daughter of the late Cecil Benjamin and Lona Meiggs Dunbar, and was the wife of Raymond Lee Wood of the residence. She was a homemaker and a member of First Christian Church.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Wood is survived by; one daughter, Crystal Dawn Wood of Louisville, KY; two sons, Eric Lee Wood of Elizabeth City, NC, and Joshua Benjamin Wood of the residence; one sister, Gail D. Stokley, of Elizabeth City, NC; and one grandchild.

A memorial service will be Tuesday, April 20, 2004, at 2:00 PM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Johnnie Ikner officiating. The family will receive friends immediately after the service in the lobby of the funeral home.

Cassie Woodcock

Edenton, NC - Cassie Mae Smith McLawhorn Woodcock, age 83, of 148 Willow Drive, Edenton, NC, died Monday, August 9, 2004 in Guardian Care Nursing Home. She was a native of Pitt County, NC, and was the daughter of the late Joseph Smith and Mattie Stokes Smith. She was retired from the Elizabeth City Cotton Mill and attended the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Mrs. Woodcock is survived by three daughters, Dorothy Bray and Lois McLawhorn both of Elizabeth City, NC, and Kathy McDonald of South Mills, NC; four sons, Earl Smith, and Joe McLawhorn both of Elizabeth City, NC, Bobby McLawhorn of Edenton, NC, and Eugene McLawhorn of Kitty Hawk, NC; two sisters, Annie Sutton and Lou Vanwagner of Ayden, NC; twenty one grandchildren and many great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be Thursday, August 12, 2004 at 2:00 PM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC, with Robert Garrett officiating. Burial will follow in the Beaver Hill Cemetery, Edenton, NC. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel. Jeanne Kavanaugh

Jeanne Tuttle Kavanaugh, 82, of 1316 Horner Street, Elizabeth City, died at her residence Sunday, January 18, 2004. She was born in Elizabeth City to the late John F. and Evelyn Dawson Tuttle and was the widow of the late Thurmond Gayle Kavanaugh. Mrs. Kavanaugh was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the UMW.

She is survived by five daughters, Mary Hubbard of McLean, VA., Laura Kavanaugh, South Riding, VA., Jeanne McCain of Elizabeth City, Edie Etheridge of Shawboro, NC, and Angel Kavanaugh of South Riding, VA; two sisters, Ann Tuttle Dykeman, Seven Lakes, NC and Polly Tuttle Pollinski of Havelock, NC; sixteen grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, a special cousin, Rod Dawson of Elizabeth City and a daughter-in-law, Karen Brandt of Camden. She was preceded in death by a son, Gayle Mallory Kavanaugh, two brothers, John Tuttle and Richard Tuttle and a sister, Jackie Mosley.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, January 21, 2004, at 1:00pm in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel by Rev. Clyde Denny. Burial will follow in the New Hollywood Cemetery. The family will receive friends and relatives in the lobby of the funeral home immediately following the services and at other time at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Hugh McCain, 1925 Rivershore Road, Elizabeth City, NC. Mary Evelyn Jackson Schultheiss

Hertford, N. C. - Mary Evelyn Jackson Schultheiss, age 66, of 140 Hemlock Street Snug Harbor Community of Hertford, N.C., died Friday morning at her residence. Mrs. Schultheiss was born in the Shiloh community of Camden County, and was the daughter of the late William Walter and Nellie Inez Scott Jackson. She was preceded in death by her husband Martin Larry Schultheiss, Sr., on June 13, 2004, her granddaughter Holly Ann Evans in 1996, and one sister Helen Lee J. Sass. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Elizabeth City, N.C., and was a retired Child Nutrition Assistant from the Perquimans County School System.

She is survived by one son Larry Schultheiss, Jr., of Hertford, N.C.; two daughters Brenda S. Payne and her husband James and Lisa S. Evans and her husband Scott both of Hertford, N.C.; four grandchildren Chad Chappell, Nicole Ambrose, Lee Anne Evans and Hunter Evans; one sister Norma Jean J. Kellis of Fort Thomas, Kentucky.

A graveside funeral service will be held Monday July 12, 2004, at 1:00 P. M. at Highland Park Cemetery in Elizabeth City with Chaplin Doug Simons officiating. The family will join friends Sunday evening from 6:00 P. M. to 8:00 P. M. at Twiford Funeral Home 405 East Church Street Elizabeth City and other times at her home.

Geneva Woods

BUXTON, NC - GENEVA STUCKEY WOODS, 80, of Buxton, NC died Saturday, February 7, 2004 in a Nags Head nursing home. Mrs. Woods was born in Kirklan, TX and was a homemaker. She was the daughter of the late Andrew Stuckey and the late Jessie Matthews and was the widow of the late Lonnie L. Woods, Sr.

Mrs. Woods is survived by one son, Lonnie L. Woods, Jr. and wife, Barbara of Frisco, NC; two grandchildren, Lonnie L. Woods, III of Texas and Kimberly M. Peele of Frisco, NC; and five great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held in the Family Cemetery in Buxton on Monday, February 9, 2004 at 10:00 am with Rev. Roger Barnett officiating. The family will receive friends at the home of Lonnie and Barbara Woods, Lovie Lane, Frisco.

ELIZABETH STILLEY LINCOLN SCARBOROUGH
Native of Bayboro, NC

Elizabeth Stilley Lincoln Scarborough, 94, of 3008 A Mulberry Lane, Greenville, NC died Monday, February 9, 2004, in the Beverly Healthcare, Greenville, NC. She was born in of Bayboro, NC to the late James Thurman and Ada Riggs Lincoln and the widow of the late Allen McCray Scarborough. Mrs. Scarborough was a member of the City Road United Methodist Church.

She is survived by two daughters, June Marie Carr of Greenville, NC, and Kathy Lee Knox and husband, Vincent, of Greenville, NC, three grandchildren, Brandon Lee, Brandilyn Knox and Sherilyn Knox. She was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister.

Graveside services will be conducted Thursday, February 12, 2004, at 3:30pm in the West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery by Rev. Charles McKenzie. Twiford Funeral Home, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, NC is in charge of funeral arrangements.

Gertrude Cartwright Wooten
Native of Elizabeth City, NC

Gertrude Cartwright Wooten, age 59, of 2017 Old Daytona Road, Port Orange, FL, died Monday, May 3, 2004, in Florida Memorial at Ormond. She was a native of Elizabeth City, NC, and was the daughter of the late Edwin Cartwright and Sallie Temple Cartwright, and was the wife of Daniel Lee Wooten, Sr. of the residence.

Besides her husband she is survived by three daughters, Brenda Raper and Teresa Ellinwood both of Elizabeth City, NC, and Tammy Nixon of Hertford, NC; one son, Daniel Lee Wooten, Jr. of Port Orange, FL; five sisters, Kay Koch, of Daytona Beach Shores, FL, Margaret Bugsby of RI, Nona Norfleet of Raleigh, NC, Brenda Spry of Elizabeth City, NC, and Patricia Hatch of Charleston, SC; two brothers, Gene Cartwright of CO, and James Cartwright of Elizabeth City, NC; five grandchildren. She was predeceased by two brothers, Pete and Brian Cartwright.

A funeral service will be Saturday, May 8, 2004 at 11:00 AM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with Mrs. Lorrie Meads officiating. The family will receive friends Friday evening 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM and immediately following the service at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel. At other times the family will be at the residence the daughter, Tammy Nixon, 158 Stevenson Drive, Hertford, NC. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel 405 E. Church Street is in charge of arrangements.

Harold Wooton

HAROLD LEROY WOOTON, age 74, of 2714 West Main Street, went to be with his Lord and Savior, and grandson Joshua Wilson, on Saturday, December 13, 2003. A native of West Manchester, Ohio he called Elizabeth City his home for over 36 years. Mr. Wooton was an active member of the City Road United Methodist Church, a founding member of the City Road Men’s Fellowship, a Boy Scout Leader, a life member of the American Legion of Ohio, and a member of the Eureka Masonic Lodge # 317 AF & AM. He was a hunting and sports enthusiast who excelled in bowling, golfing, hunting, fishing, and the Senior Center Games.

Mr. Wooton retired from the United States Navy as a Chief Petty Officer on August 7, 1967 after 20 years of exceptional service. He started his career as a diver and later honed his artistic talents as a military pattern maker. He also retired from the Elizabeth City Coast Guard Station after a 17-year career as a carpenter in Civil Service.

Besides his wife of 49 years, Leatha Lewis Wooton, he is survived by two daughters, Barbara Wooton Wilson of Elizabeth City, NC, and Linda Wooton Cramer of Chesapeake, VA, and three sons: Larry Lewis Wooton of Midlothian, VA; Jamie Harold Wooton of Camden NC; and Marcus Ray Wooton of Hillsborough, NC. Eleven grandchildren lovingly called him “Papaw.” His mother Marietta Wooton Shepard, and two sisters Betty Wooton Spiegel of Louisville KY, and Dorothy Shepard Korn of Anderson, IN survive him. His father, Lewis J. Wooton, predeceased him in 1956.

Funeral services will be conducted on Tuesday December 16, 2003 at 1:00 p.m. in the City Road United Methodist Church. The Rev. Charles McKenzie will officiate. Burial will follow in Westlawn Cemetery with full Military Honors. The family will receive friends at City Road United Methodist Church, North Road Street on Monday evening from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the City Road United Methodist Church

Charles Workman

Charles Benjamin Workman, age 74, of 816 Griffin Swamp Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died Saturday, August 28, 2004, at the Albemarle Hospital. Born in Summit County, Ohio, he was the son of the late Charles Franklin and Losie Downey Workman, and husband of Meta Kirkpatrick Workman of the residence. Mr. Workman was retired as an inspector of the Ford Motor Company, and attended Faith Baptist Church in Elizabeth City. He was a member of the VFW in North Ridgeville, Ohio, Dover Masonic Lodge # 489 AF & AM in Westlake, Ohio and held a Private Pilots License. He served in the US Air Force during World War II.

Besides his wife Mr. Workman is survived by: two daughters Robin Workman of Elizabeth City, NC, and Susan Metz of North Ridgeville, Ohio; four sons Todd Workman of Manteo, NC, John Workman of Buxton, NC, Eric Workman of Westlake, OH, and Dennis Workman of Kansas City, MO; one sister, Mary Etta Spear of Warrenton, MO; and one brother Larry Workman of Atlanta, GA; ten grandchildren; and ten great grandchildren. Besides his parents he was predeceased by seven brothers and three sisters.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, September 1, 2004 at 1:00pm in the chapel of Raiguel Funeral Home, 401 E. Main St., Harrisville, WV 26362-1207. A visitation will be held Tuesday evening at the funeral home from 6:00 until 9:00pm and on Wednesday from 9:00am until funeral time. Burial will follow in the Alice Cemetery, Cox’s Mills, WV. The body has been sent from Twiford’s Funeral Home, Elizabeth City, NC to the Raiguel Funeral Home, Harrisville, WV.

Anna Blanche Call

Chesapeake – Anna Blanche Call, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, on Friday, March 05, 2004.

Mrs. Call is survived by three daughters, Dot Haynes of Cleveland, TN, Kit Eldreth of Chesapeake and Millie Mansfield of Chesapeake; four sons, Jim and Whitey Call of Yorktown, VA, Roy Call of Newport News, VA and Paul Call of Abington, VA.; and a host of other family and friends.

Funeral services will be held at Farris Funeral Home in Abingdon, VA. Twiford’s Colonial Chapel, Chesapeake is in charge of local arrangements. The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to Bon Secours Hospice for their wonderful, caring and compassionate staff. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Bon Secours Hospice.

Edward Worsfold
San Francisco, CA native

Edward Worsfold, age 78, of 111 Inlet Drive, Elizabeth City, NC, died Wednesday, March 3, 2004, at the Albemarle Hospital. Mr. Worsfold, a native of San Francisco, CA, was the husband of Norma Bowlin Worsfold of the residence and the son of the late William Worsfold and Frances Mitchalek Worsfold. He was a retired Master Chief of the US Navy having served on Polaris Class Submarines. He had transferred from The Francis Scott Key to the Will Rogers as Chief of the Boat. He was a member of the Masonic Union Lodge No. 31 A.F. & A.M., the Elizabeth City Chapter #44 Order of the Eastern Star, and a life member of Moose Lodge # 1198.

Besides his wife he is survived by three daughters, Louise Polston of Rathdrum, ID, Vickie Christensen and husband Ray of Statten Island, NY, and Anita Claiborne and husband Taylor of Stovall, NC; a son, Edward Worsfold, Jr., of Louisburg, NC; a sister, Gladys Potts and husband Edgar of Petaluma, CA; a brother William Worsfold, Jr., of Kettle Falls, WA; eight grandchildren; and thirteen great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be Friday, March 5, 2004, at 2:30 PM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, with Masonic rites and full military honors. The family will receive friends at the residence. William Lilly

Elizabeth City, NC - William Pete Lilly, 66, of 1706 West Main Street, Elizabeth City, NC died Wednesday, September 17, 2003 at Albemarle Hospital. He was born in Perquimans County, NC to the late Nathan Pete and Mary Boyce Lilly and was the husband of Margaret Husky Lilly of the residence. He was retired from civil service at the United States Coast Guard Base and was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church.

Besides his wife, Mr. Lilly is survived by two sons, Billy Lilly and Brian Lilly both of Elizabeth City, NC; three step daughters, Linda Denny of Shiloh, NC, Brenda Davis of Elizabeth City, NC, and Sandra Adkins of Tyner, NC; two sisters, Nancy Pate of Elizabeth City, NC and Louise Lamontange of Dade City, FL; ten grandchildren and six great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Michael Lilly and a brother, Clarence Lilly.

A funeral service will be conducted on Sunday, September 21, 2003 at 2:00 PM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Joey Hobbs. Burial will be at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the lobby of the funeral home immediately following the service. A visitation will be on Saturday from 7:00 to 8:00 PM at the funeral home.

James Joseph Butt
Retired Navy Commander

CDR James Joseph Butt USNR Ret., age 80, of 126 Bunch Road, Aydlett, NC, died peacefully Sunday, December 21, 2003 at his residence. He was born in Mobile, AL, son of the late Michael Joseph and Anna Josephine MacDonald Butt, and was the husband of Olive Bunch Butt of the residence. He was a retired Commander for the U.S. Navy, having served in WWII and the Korean War. He was the First Civilian Administrative Officer at NWS Yorktown serving from 1962-1974, and while there organized the first security department at NWS Yorktown. Mr. Butt was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, and a member of the 5480 Club of the Knights of Columbus. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather.

Besides his wife, Mr. Butt is survived by two daughters, Sharon Hodges and husband Christopher of Haymarket, VA, and Karen Mayne and husband Paul of Marietta, GA; two sons, James Butt, Jr. of New York City, NY, and Kevin Butt and wife Jill of Virginia Beach, VA; and five granddaughters.

The family will receive friends at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC, Monday, December 22, 2003 from 7:00 until 8:30 PM and at other times at the residence. A private graveside service will be held at a later date.

John Burton

John R. Burton, 89, of 5841 Old Kendrick Road, Helena, Alabama and a former resident of the Newland section of Pasquotank County, NC, died at his residence Friday, January 16, 2004. He was born in Renfrew, Ontario, Canada to the late John R. and Elizabeth Burton. He was the widower of the late Estelle Spence Burton. Mr. Burton was retired from Eastern Airlines as a director of system control after 33 years of service and was a member of the Newland United Methodist Church.

He is survived by one son, Jack Spence Burton of Dawsonville, GA.; four grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, January 20, 2004, at 11:00am in the Newland United Methodist Church by Rev. Toni Wood. Burial will be in the Koen Cemetery. The family will receive friends and relatives immediately following the service in the church’s social hall. There will be a visitation for family and friends Monday evening from 7:00 until 8:30pm at Twiford Funeral Home, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, NC.

Anita Wright

Chesapeake, VA - Anita Carol Swain Wright, 50, formerly of Currituck County, NC died Tuesday, October 7, 2003 in Chesapeake, VA. She was born in Pasquotank County, NC to the late Robert Cecil and Violet Robanna Duncan Swain and was a homemaker.

She is survived by two sons, William Wade Wright, Sr. of Moyock, NC and Kevin James Wright of Chesapeake, VA; two sisters, Yvonne Gregory and Carrie Hibner both of Chesapeake, VA; four brothers, Charles Swain, James (Sam) Swain, and Phillip Swain all of Barco, NC and William (Bill) Swain of Chesapeake, VA; three grandchildren, William W. Wright, Jr., Dalton Wright, and Brendan Wright; and her former husband, James B. Wright.

A graveside service will be conducted on Friday, October 10, 2003 at 2:00 PM at the Snowden Cemetery, Maple, NC by Wayne Twiford. The family will receive friends at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC on Thursday from 7:00 to 8:30 PM and at other times at 144 Brumsey Road, Moyock, NC.

Billy Wright

Billy D. Wright, 61, of 710 Oakdale Drive, Elizabeth City, NC died Wednesday, February 11, 2004, in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. Mr. Wright was born in Muncie, IN to the late Harold W. and Virginia Thorne Wright. He retired as an AEC from the U.S. Coast Guard, a member of Pine Lakes Country Club, Bass Masters of Elizabeth City and he was a Protestant.

Mr. Wright is survived by one brother, James G. Wright of Bloomington, IN and seven nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by one sister, Beverly K. Handley.

A funeral service will be conducted Friday evening, February 13, 2004, at 7:00pm in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC. The family will receive friends Friday evening prior to the service from 5:30 to 7:00pm at the Chapel. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 404 Jessup Street, Elizabeth City, NC 27909. Another funeral service will take place in Muncie, IN with burial in the Gardens of Memory Cemetery, Muncie, IN at a later date.

Ruth Creekmore Lindsey

Moyock, NC - Ruth Creekmore Lindsey, age 85 of 482 Caratoke Highway, died March 6, 2003 at Chesapeake General Hospital. She was born in Moyock, daughter of the late William “Will” Theodore and Pauline Flora Creekmore. She was predeceased by her husband, William B. Lindsey, Jr. and her sister, Lena C. Powers.

Mrs. Lindsey is survived by her daughter, Wanda Lindsey Daniels and her husband, Bob, of Williamsburg, VA, her son, W. Wayne Lindsey of Dallas, TX, and three grandchildren, Blake P. Daniels, Brad L. Daniels, and Suzanne L. Daniels.

She was a lifelong member of Moyock United Methodist Church. She retired in 1979 after 20 years of teaching in Pasquotank, Camden, and Currituck schools. She was a member of the National Education Association, N. C. State Education Association, and the district and local retired teachers associations. She graduated from East Carolina Teachers’ College in 1939 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and History.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 8, 2003 at 2:00 PM in the Moyock Baptist Church with Rev. Vic Culberson officiating. Burial will follow in the Moyock Memorial Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Moyock United Methodist Church, P. O. Box 267, Moyock, NC 27958. The family will be at the residence.

Alvah Tennyson Williams

Moyock, NC – Alvah Tennyson Williams, 85, died Monday, March 15, 2004 at his residence with his family at his side. Mr. Williams was born in Wanchese, NC to the late Arthur and Carlie Williams. He was a member of the Moyock United Methodist Church, Manteo Masonic Lodege #521, The Scottish Rites Bodies, a Shriner and former town councilman of Kitty Hawk, NC. He retired from Oceana Naval Air Station as a utilities supervisor was a veteran, having served in the US Navy. Mr. Williams was predeceased by his first wife, Nancy Midgett Williams, and sons Gregory (Buster) and Arthur Williams.

Survivors include his wife Margaret Foster Williams; two daughters Annette Williams Slater of Williamsburg, VA and Carlie Williams Bertram of West Point, VA; two sons, Jim Williams and Tenny Williams both of Williamsburg, VA; two sisters, Pauline Haywood of Chesapeake, and Myrtle Tillett of Wanchese, NC; One step-daughter, Susan Evans of Kill Devil Hills, NC; one step-son, Fred Evans of Chesapeake; six grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 1:00pm at Twiford’s Colonial Chapel, Chesapeake with Rev. Susie Fitch-Slater and Rev. Vic Culberson officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday from 7:00 until 8:30pm.

Jonathan Sawyer

Powells Point, N. C. - Jonathan “John” Boutton Sawyer, Sr., age 88, of 100 Sawyers Lane Powells Point, N. C., died Saturday July 17, 2004 at his residence.

Mr. Sawyer was born in Beaufort County, N. C. and was the son of the late James Lloyd and Mary Ellen Wallace Sawyer. He was preceded in death by his wife Mildred Wallace Sawyer on January 21, 2000, one son Johnny Sawyer and one granddaughter Jennifer G. Wood. Mr. Sawyer was a veteran of the U. S. Navy serving during World War II, a member of the Jarvisburg Church of Christ, and the retired owner and manager of North River Orchard.

Survivors include three daughters; Alma S. Forbes of Powells Point, NC, Susan S. Tillman and her husband Lamar of King, N. C. and Anne S. Banks and her husband Aubrey of Winston-Salem, N. C., ten grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren, and one brother William Lloyd Sawyer of Mt. Holly, N. C.

A funeral service will be held Tuesday at 11:00 A. M. at the Jarvisburg Church of Christ with Dennis Crehan and Lamar Tillman officiating. Burial will follow at the Jarvisburg Church of Christ Cemetery on Fisher’s Road. Military rites will be rendered by the V. F. W. Post # 6060 honor guard unit of Elizabeth City, N. C. His grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

The family will join friends Tuesday morning from 9:45 A. M. until the funeral hour at the Jarvisburg Church of Christ and other times at his home.
