Wallace Gray

Avon, NC - Wallace Richard Gray, Jr., 29, died on Thursday, January 22, 2004 at an Avon Medical Center. Mr. Gray was born in Elizabeth City, NC and was a painter for the West Wade Construction Company. He was a member of the St. John’s United Methodist Church and a graduate of Cape Hatteras High School. He was the son of Wallace Richard Gray, Sr. of Avon and Cherri O’Neal Quidley of Buxton.

Besides his parents, he is survived by one sister, Jessica Leigh Price of Raleigh; Paternal grandfather, Willard G. Gray of Avon and Maternal grandmother, Loretta O’Neal of Buxton.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, January 24, 2004 at 2:00 PM at St. John’s United Methodist Church with Rev. Susie Fitch-Slater officiating. Burial will take place in the Scarborough Family Cemetery, Avon. The body will be placed in the church Friday afternoon and the family will be receiving friends that evening from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM.

Twiford’s Island Chapel, Hatteras, is assisting the family with these arrangements.

Bennie Williams

Avon, NC - Bennie Williams, 93, died at an Outer Banks medical facility on Saturday, November 1, 2003. Mr. Williams was born in Avon and was retired from the United States Postal Service. He was a veteran having served in the United States Coast Guard during WWII. He was the son of the late Charles and Sally Williams Williams and the widower of Helen Bolek Williams.

Mr. Williams is survived by two daughters, Rose Jansen of Medford, NY and Geneieve Maccia of Mebane, NC; twelve grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; he was preceded in death by one daughter, Helen Peluso;

A Service of Remembrance will be held at a later date in New Jersey.

Noah Williams

Elizabeth City, NC - Noah Norman Williams, also known as “Gus” and “Poor Boy, ” age 67, of 1321 Lamb’s Grove Rd. Elizabeth City, NC, died Thursday, September 18, 2003 at Albemarle Hospital. He was born in Pantego, NC, to the late Forest Edwards Williams and the late Letha ChessonWilliams Lefever and was the husband of Loretta Phelps Williams of the residence. He was an independent truck driver and a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Besides his wife Mr. Williams is survived by a daughter, Tena Jones of Elizabeth City, NC; two sons, Norman and Horace Williams both of the residence; a brothers, Forest “Tex” Williams of Creswell, NC; and a granddaughter, Haley Jones.

A funeral service will be conducted on Tuesday, September 23, 2003 at 2:00 PM at Twiford’s Northside Chapel by the Rev. Roland Cooper. Burial will be a Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home immediately following the service and at other times at the home of Ronnie and Tena Jones, 852 Wellfield Rd., Elizabeth City, NC.

Harold Williams

Elizabeth City, NC - Mr. Harold Calvin Williams, age 95, of 707 Richardson Street, Elizabeth City, NC died Friday, October 1, 2004, at his residence. Mr. Williams was born in Hyde County, NC, the son of the late Calvin Bishop Williams and Dessie Marie McKinney Williams and was the widow of Mary Afadell Gibbs Williams. He was a retired carpenter.

Mr. Williams is survived by one daughter, Cecelia Boulerice of Elizabeth City, NC; two sisters, Alma Lewis of Elizabeth City, NC and Rena Belle W. Gibbs of Englehardt, NC; one brother, Melvin Williams of Elizabeth City, NC. 9 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren and 12 great great grandchildren. He was predeceased by a daughter, Christine W. Hook and a son, Chesley Wayne Williams.

A funeral service will be conducted Monday, October 3, 2004, at 2:00 PM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC. By Pastor Neal Scott. The family will receive friends at the residence.

Elmo L. Williams

MANTEO, NC - ELMO L. WILLIAMS, passed over peacefully at his residence on August 11, 2003. Mr. Williams, originally from Danville, Va, lived most of his life in Newport News, Va and was a resident of Dare County since 1975. He served in the Merchant Marines during World War II, receiving combat ribbons for participating in the Normandy, Sicily and Okinawa invasions. Following World War II, he was a small business owner operating service stations in Newport News and Hampton. After his retirement in 1975, Mr. Williams, along with his wife Elsie, owned and operated Black Beards Treasure Chest in Nags Head until 1999.

Mr. Williams is pre-deceased by a son George O. Wescott, his parents, Rosa and Fosco Williams, a sister, Pearl.

Survivors include his wife of nearly 60 years, Elsie; a son, Elmo Wade Williams; Grandchildren, Skip and Kevin Wescott; Wade, John, Daniel and Elizabeth Williams; a brother, Rueben; five sisters, Gladys, Catherine, Christine, Bethel, Elaine, and seven great grandchildren, Vonnie, Georgeanna, McKenzie, Ben, Lauren, Austin and Devin.

Mr. Williams was an unusually kind, loving person. Children and animals were attracted to him because of his aura of kindness. He had neither enemies or vices. He will be mourned and missed long after his death by all who knew and loved him.

Visitation will be held at Twiford’s Colony Chapel, Manteo at 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday. Services will be at the Manteo Baptist Church at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, Rev. James Davenport officiating. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to Manteo Baptist Church, P.O. Box 670, Manteo, N.C. or to the Dare County Hospice, P.O. Box 1000, Manteo, N.C. 27954. Twiford’s Colony Chapel Manteo is assisting the Williams Family.

VIVIAN SAWYER WILLIAMS
Former City employee

Vivian Sawyer Williams, 85, of 1813 Fearing Ave., Elizabeth City, died Saturday, December 21, 2002, in the Albemarle Hospital. She was born in Dare County to the late Nelson Seymour and Dakens Holmes Sawyer and was the widow of the late Frank Abram Williams. She was retired from the City of Elizabeth City having worked in the Utility Dept. and was a member of the Pearl St. Pentecostal Church.

Mrs. Williams is survived by one son, Frank Kramer Williams and wife, Anne, of Elizabeth City, two grandchildren, Frank Kramer Williams, Jr. and wife, Tracy, of Elizabeth City and Sherry Grady and husband, Matt, of Apex, NC.

Funeral services will be conducted Monday, December 23, 2002, at 2:00pm in the Pearl St. Pentecostal Church by Rev. Steven Strickland. Burial will be in the West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends and relatives at the church immediately following the services and at other times at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Kramer Williams, 1814 Fearing Ave., Elizabeth City, NC.

Leona Cox Walker

Leola Cox Walker, age 92 of 4150 Caratoke Highway, Barco, NC died Tuesday, July 1, 2003 at her residence. She was born in Currituck County, NC; daughter of the late John Thomas and Louetta Doxey Cox and was the wife of Edward B. Walker of the residence. She was a member of Coinjock Baptist Church.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Walker is survived by a daughter, Linda Rae Kight Harrison of Shawboro, NC, a sister, Maggie Swain of Coinjock, NC, a brother, Irvin Cox of Barco, NC, six grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and a beloved brother-in-law, Marshall Kight. She was predeceased by a daughter, Reba Kight Lowe, four sisters and a brother.

A graveside service will be conducted on Thursday, July 3, 2003 at 11:00 AM in the Snowden Cemetery at Maple with Rev. Dale Pace officiating. The family will be at the residence.

Elwyn “Gruffy” Walker
Owner/Operater Currituck Service Center

Elwyn “Gruffy” Walker, beloved husband and father, age 81, of 238 Bells Island Road, Currituck, NC, died Wednesday, October 8, 2003, at his home. He was born in Currituck to the late Ernest Wiley and Lydia Ansell Walker. He was owner/operator of Currituck Service Center for 45 years and a member of the Crawford Township Volunteer Fire and Rescue. He was an active member of Rehoboth Baptist Church having served as deacon, trustee, Sunday School Superintendent, choir member, and building and grounds committee member. He donated many hours toward building the new Church Fellowship Hal. Anytime a neighbor needed anything repaired or fixed, Gruffy was always available.

Mr. Walker is survived by his wife of 61 years, Pauline Dunton Walker of the home; two daughters, Patricia Walker Smith and husband Will of Currituck, NC, and Diana Walker Cratt and husband James of Williamston, NC; three grandchildren, Dennis Newbern and Danny Newbern of Powell’s Point, NC, and Andy Newbern of Jarvisburg, NC; six great grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; two brothers, Elmer Walker of Moyock, NC, and Edward Walker of Barco, NC. A brother, Ernest Walker of Wanchese, NC, preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be Saturday, October 11, 2003, at 11:00 AM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Charles Wellons officiating. Burial will follow in the Dunton Cemetery in Aydlett, NC. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday evening from 7:00 to 8:30 PM and at other times at the residence. Memorial donations may be made to Rehoboth Baptist Church, PO Box 56, Maple, NC 27956, the American Cancer Society or the charity of one’s choice.

Andrea Whetstone

Manteo, NC - Andrea Katie Sage Whetstone, 35 years of age passed on December 12th at her residence in Manteo. She was born in Petersburg, VA and had been a resident of Dare County for a number of years. She was the daughter of Robert and Sandra Eggleston of Manteo and the wife of Roger Whetstone of Virginia Beach.

She is also survived by a daughter, Scarlet Melody Whetstone of Virginia Beach; a sister, Yvonne Kendrick of Lexington, Kentucky; a brother, Jared Royal Sage of Manteo; maternal grandfather, Andrew Crawford of Wilmington, Vermont; paternal grandparents, Wallace and Thelma Sage of Florida, and many friends who loved her.

She was preceded in death by her father, Wallace J. Sage.

A Service of Remembrance will be held on Wednesday, December 17, 2003 at 2:00 PM at Twiford’s Colony Chapel with Rev. Tom Supplee officiating.

The family will be receiving friends at the Twiford’s Colony Chapel on Tuesday, December 16, 2003 from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM.

Edna May Gee White

Elizabeth City, NC - Edna May Gee White, 69, of 2305 West Main Street, Elizabeth City, NC died Wednesday, February 12, 2003 at her residence. She was born in Liverpool, England to the late Lucy Davies Gee and was the wife of Albert Edgar White of the home. She was a homemaker and attended Fountain of Life Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Besides her husband, Mrs. White is survived by two daughters, Anita Cox and husband Pete of Charlotte, NC and Yvonne Marturano and husband Vinnie of Elizabeth City, NC; two sons, Eddie White and wife Lyree of Elizabeth City, NC and Steve White and friend Jean Gray of Elizabeth City, NC; one brother, Norman James Gee of New Zealand; seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be conducted on Saturday, February 15, 2003 at 2:00 PM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Bill Mayo. Burial will be at New Hollywood Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home immediately following the service and at other times at the residence. Dacie Meads White

Elizabeth City, NC - Mrs. Dacie Meads White, age 81, of Elizabeth City, NC died Thursday, March 20, 2003 at Winslow’s Nursing Home. Mrs. White was born in Pasquotank County and was the daughter of the late Jabe B. and Beulah Cartwright Meads and was the widow of Ernest Shelton White. She was a homemaker and attended Symons Creek Tabernacle Church.

Mrs. White is survived by two sons, Ronnie E. White and wife Pam, and Wayne D. White and wife, Kim all of Elizabeth City, NC; one sister, Fern Meads Bryant of Chesapeake, VA; one brother, Selvie J. Meads of Elizabeth City, NC; eleven grandchildren; and five great grandchildren. She was predeceased by two daughters, Murna Stevenson and Martha Ashley; one son, Douglas White; and one sister, Ruth Meads White.

A funeral service will be conducted on Sunday, March 23, 2003, at 2:00 PM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Stuart Meads and the Rev. William Rembert. Entombment will be in Highland Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends and relatives on Saturday from 7:00 to 8:30 PM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel and immediately following the service at the funeral home. The family will be at the residence of her son, Wayne D. White, 614 Meadstown Road, Elizabeth City, NC.

William C. Sawyer

William Charles Sawyer, age 66, of 117 Camden Avenue, Camden, NC, died Friday, February 6, 2004 at his residence. Mr. Sawyer, a native of Camden, was the husband of Bess Tillitt Godfrey Sawyer of the residence and the son of the late William Henry Sawyer and Maxine Walston Sawyer. He graduated from Camden County High School and attended College of the Alblemarle. He served in the NC National Guard and worked at C. E. Thurston for twenty five years before becoming a farmer. He was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church, the Couples’ Class, choir, and a former deacon. He served as a volunteer fireman and in 1979 he received the Fireman of the Year Award.

Besides his wife he is survived by a daughter, Helene Sawyer of Harbinger, NC; two sisters, Maude Elizabeth Staples, and husband Alton, of Wendell, NC, and Linda Ann Demuth of Melbourne, Australia; a brother, Thomas Irving Sawyer and wife Barbara, of South Mills, NC; two grandsons, Robert A. Taylor and Charles William Taylor; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two sisters, Frances Maxine Gray and Jean Claire Sawyer.

A correction on funeral day and time has been made, a memorial service will be held on Sunday, February 8, 2003 at 4:00 pm in Shiloh Baptist Church with the Rev. Dave Combs and Rev. Irvin Acree officiating. A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, February 11, 2004 at 3:00 in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends following the service at the church, in the Fellowship Hall on Sunday, and at other times at the residence. Mary White

Elizabeth City, NC - Mary A. Turner White, 98, of Elizabeth City, NC died Monday, September 08, 2003. She was born in Perquimans County, NC to the late Arthur Newby and Alethia Lane Winslow and was the widow of Rufus W. Turner and Jessie V. White. She was a member of Pearl Street Pentecostal Church and was a homemaker.

Mrs. White is survived by three daughters, Viola Davis and husband James of Weaverville, NC, Lois Baccus and husband Gilbert of Hertford, NC, and Madeline Joynes of Pageland, SC; two sons, Preston Turner and wife Jennie of Edenton, NC and Aubrey E. Turner of Hertford, NC; many grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews; and a devoted nurse, Jeanette Gallop. She was preceded in death by a son, Rufus Turner, Jr.

A funeral service will be conducted on Wednesday, September 10, 2003 at 4:00 PM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC by the Rev. Tony Klepper. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the lobby of the funeral home and at other times at the residence of Gilbert and Lois Baccus, 153 Baccus Lane, Hertford, NC.

Mrs. White was the best mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great-great grandmother, and cook ever.

ANNA BYRUM WHITE
Loving wife & mother

Anna Byrum White, 73, of 1108 N. Road St., Elizabeth City, NC died Thursday evening, December 25, 2003, at her residence. She was born in Chowan County to the late Ernest Ray and Annie Baccus Byrum and was the wife of James Marshall White. She was a member of the Fountain of Life Ministries and served as choir director for 22 years, member of the Rebekah Lodge #62, past president of the Elizabeth City Business and Professional Women and was a member of the Kindred Trio for 10 years. She was an Avon representative for 34 years. Mrs. White loved her Lord and family was the epitome of a Christian lady.

Besides her husband, she is survived by four daughters, Sandra R. Spruill and husband, Jeff of Plymouth, NC, Marsha W. Hill and husband Gary, Gwen R. Hedgepeth and husband, Bill, both of Elizabeth City, NC, and Michelle W. Clark, and husband Jeff, of Wilmington, NC; three sisters, Earcle W. Riddick of Hobbsville, NC, Evelyn Hobbs and husband, Bonnie and Sylvia Biggs and husband, Robert both of Elizabeth City, NC.; eight grandchildren Larry P. Spruill, Tracy Spruill, Emelia Spruill, Justin Hill, Myra Hill, Stephanie Walters, Brandon Clark and Ethan Clark and two great grandchildren, Kendra Spruill and Ava O’Neill. Also, Mrs. White is survived by a very special nephew, Randy Hobbs. She was preceded in death by a brother, Ernest Ray Byrum.

Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, December 28, 2003, at 2:00pm in the Fountain of Life Church by Rev. M. L. Bloodworth and Rev. Bill Mayo. Burial will follow in the West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family is accepting flowers, however anyone wishing may make a memorial gift to the Fountain of Life Ministries Building Fund or to one’s favorite charity. The family will be receiving friends and relatives at their home, 1108 N. Road St., Elizabeth City. Twiford Funeral Home, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City is in charge of arrangements.

Martin Kellogg White

Nags Head, NC - Martin Kellogg White, 61, of 322 West Bridge Lane, Nags Head, NC, died Monday, June 21, 2004 at his residence with complications from diabetes. He was born in Raleigh, NC to the late Thomas Livingston White, Sr. and the late Almeta Kellogg White. Mr. White was a retired textile engineer with Hanes Hosiery Division of Sara Lee Corp. and was currently in Senior Management with Kellogg Supply. He obtained a BS degree in Textile Engineering from North Carolina State University and a MS degree in Business Administration at the University of North Carolina.

Mr. White is survived by a brother, Thomas L. White, Jr.; two aunts, Bessie Kellogg Duff and Genevieve W. Duke.

A funeral service will be conducted on Friday, June 25, 2004 at 10:00 AM in the chapel of St. Andrews by-the-Sea Episcopal Church by the Rev. Charles Gill. A reception will follow in the parrish hall of the church. Burial will be in Roanoke Island Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends and relatives on Thursday from 7:00 to 8:30 PM at Twiford’s Colony Chapel, Manteo, NC. James West

Manns Harbor, NC - James Dennis West, 59, died Friday, December 26, 2003 at a Norfolk medical facility. Mr. West was born in Williamston, North Carolina and was raised in Edenton and for 25 years has been a resident of Manns Harbor. He was a Retired gunsmith and boat builder at Davis Yachts. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Mr. West was the son of Mrs. Lillie Mae West of Woodland, NC and the husband of Holly Smith West of the home. He was preceded in death by his father, Bernard Boston McCullough and his step-father, Steannie West.

Besides his wife and mother, he is survived by two daughters, Cathy Doreen West of Manteo and Carolyn Wainwright of Jacksonville, NC; two step-daughters, Spring Weight of Pittsburgh, PA and Heather Gardiner of Manteo; one sister, Joyce Sawyer and husband, Seaton of Woodland, NC; five grandsons, Richard, Cameron, Daniel, Chase and Taylor; several nieces and nephews and his beloved cats, Furr and Mattie.

A Service of Remembrance will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Nags Head on Monday, December 29, 2003 at 6:00 PM with President Jeff Jacobson officiating. In lieu of flowers, Memorial Donations may be made to the National Kidney Foundation, 4601 Six Forks Road, Suite 500, Raleigh, NC 27609. John Quincy White, Jr.

John Q, “Johnny Boy” White, Jr., age 68, of 401 North 343, Camden, NC, died Thursday, September 4, 2003 at his residence. He was born in Perquimans County, NC, son of late John Quincy and Bessie Gregory White, Sr., and the husband of Marcia Stallings White. He was retired from the United State Coast Guard Aircraft Reworks Support Center. Since retirement he enjoyed traveling, auctions, and collecting. He loved to talk. He attended Sawyers Creek Baptist Church. He was a member of Perquimans Masonic Lodge 106, AF & AM, Sudan Shriners of New Bern, NC, Elizabeth City Shrine Club, where he was past president, Scottish Rite Bodies of New Bern, NC.

Mr. White is survived by one daughter, Cheri Garrett of Elizabeth City, NC; one son, Mark Colvin and his wife Danielle of Elizabeth City, , NC; one sister, Bessie Dean Spence and husband, Bobby of Va. Beach, VA; three brothers, Thomas Preston White and wife Nancy of Hertford, NC, Hersey White of South Mills, NC, Dempsey White and wife Pauline of Vienna, VA; four grandchildren, Erik Burton, Devin and Colby Colvin, Amanda Fletcher of Elizabeth City, NC; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by one brother, James G. White.

Funeral services will be Sunday, September 7, 2003 at 3:00 PM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Tom LeGrand officiating. Burial will follow in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery with Masonic Rites. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday evening from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM, and at the residence at other times. William Irvin White Jr.

Moyock, NC – William Irvin White, Jr, 56, died Friday, September 5, 2003 at his residence with his family at his side. Mr. White was born in Bristol, PA to Frances Knott White and the late William White Sr. He was a veteran having served in the US Navy for over 20 years. Mr. White was a member of Moyock Baptist Church, where he served as deacon, financial secretary, and dedicated himself to operating the sound system for all services.

He is survived by his wife, Kay White; his mother Frances; one daughter, Sarah White; two sons, Brain and Matthew White; one sister, Deborah John; and three brothers, David, James and Robert White.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday at 3:00 pm at Moyock Baptist Church with Rev. Vic Ramsey officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow at Moyock Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church on Saturday from 7:00 pm until 8:30 pm. In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made to the American Cancer Society or to Moyock Baptist Church. Twiford Colonial Chapel, Chesapeake is in charge of these arrangements.

Judy Evans Whitehurst

Harbinger, NC - Currituck County native - Judy Evans Whitehurst, age 60, of 8573 Caratoke Highway, Harbinger, NC, died Sunday, January 19, 2003, at Chesapeake General Hospital in Chesapeake, VA. She was born in Grandy, NC, the daughter of the late Vernon and Lydia Jarvis Thompson Evans. She was a devoted mother and homemaker, and was a member of the Powells Point Baptist Church.

Mrs. Whitehurst is survived by: three daughters, Suzanne Elkin of Duck, NC, Debbie Dowdy of Powells Point, NC, and Charlene Staples of Jarvisburg, NC; one son Charlie Randall Whitehurst, Jr. of Harbinger, NC; one sister Jeanette Willis of Grandy, NC; six grandchildren Denise, Jessica, Randy, Derrick, Victoria and Magen; three great grandchildren, and a special care giver, Malissa B. Winslow. She was predeceased by a brother, Vernon Evans, Jr.

A funeral service will be conducted Tuesday, January 21, 2003 at 1:00 PM in Powells Point Baptist Church with Rev. Eugene McLawhorn officiating. Burial will be in the Powells Point Baptist Church Cemetery. The body will be placed in the Church at 11:00 AM Tuesday.

Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC, is in charge of arrangements.
