Doris Warden

Mrs. Doris Beals Warden, age 68, of 216 Simpson Street, Elizabeth City, NC, died Friday, April 9, 2004, at her residence. Mrs. Warden, a native of Pasquotank County, was the wife of Rudolph E. Warden, Sr., of the residence and the daughter of the late Irvin R. Beals and Gladys Sawyer Beals. She was a member of First Christian Church and served as the church secretary for twenty-seven years.

Besides her husband she is survived by a daughter, Gwen W. Williams and husband Randy of Elizabeth City, NC; two sons, Rudy Warden and wife Sharon of Elizabeth City, NC, and Tim Warden and wife Brenda of Hertford, NC; four sisters, Louise Stone of Hertford, NC, Connie Whitley of Hertford, NC, Brenda Conner of Corpus Cristi, TX, and Sandra Sawyer of Camden, NC; three brothers, Woodie Beals of Camden, NC, Robert Beals of Highlands Ranch, CO, and Michael Beals of Corpus Cristi, TX; six grandchildren, Courtney Williams, April Williams, Brock Warden, Samantha Warden, Summer Reed and husband Jeremy, and Jason Warden and wife Jessica; and one great grandchild, Lexi Warden.

A funeral service will be Tuesday, April 13, 2004 at 3:00 pm at First Christian Church with Rev. William Roberts officiating. Burial will be in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church immediately following the service and at other times at the residence. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to First Christian Church, 701 Parsonage Street, Elizabeth City, NC 27909. Nancy Jefferson Warden
Retired NEHS Teacher

Nancy Jefferson Warden, age 56, of 114 Jane Lane, Elizabeth City, NC, died Tuesday, February 25, 2003, at the Albemarle Hospital. Mrs. Warden, a native of Washington, NC, was the wife of Gordon Phillip Warden of the residence and the daughter of Connie Musser Jefferson of Burlington, NC, and the late Gravely Thomas Jefferson. A graduate of NC State, she was retired from the Elizabeth City – Pasquotank County Schools Central Office as the SIMS and Math Coordinator and had taught at Northeastern High School. She was the office manager for New Colonial Cabinets.

Besides her husband and mother, she is survived by a daughter, Nancy Leigh Warden of Kitty Hawk, NC; a son, Phillip Jefferson Warden of Elizabeth City, NC; two brothers, Tommy Jefferson of San Francisco, CA, and Dan Jefferson of Raleigh, NC.

A graveside funeral service will be Friday, February 28, 2003, at 1:00 PM at West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. F. Joe Griffith officiating. The family will receive friends at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel Thursday from 7:00 to 8:30 PM and at other times at the residence.

John F. Wandell
Resident of Elizabeth City, NC

John F. Wandell, age 77, of 1082 A Commissary Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died, Sunday, August 17, 2003 at his residence. He was born in Elmira, NY; son of the late Francis and Lucy Campbell Wandell and was the husband of Minnie Knights Wandell. He was a retired engineer for the U.S. Army and worked as a state employee for the county of Chemung, NY.

Besides his wife, Mr. Wandell is survived by a daughter, Victoria L. Freeman of Elizabeth City, NC; two sons, Kelley D. Wandell and Paul S. Wandell both of Elizabeth City, NC; a sister, Shirley Wood of Elmira, NY; two brothers, Richard Wandell of Elmira, NY and Gary Wandell of Tacoma, WA; and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Bob Wandell and a grandson, Ryan J. Wandell.

A graveside service will be held Wednesday, August 20, 2003 at 11:00 AM in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery with Dr. Alfred Moncla officiating. Military Honors will be performed by the William Clarence Jackson Post #6060. The family will be at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Vinny Freeman, 1082 B Commissary Road, Elizabeth City, NC, at other times. Freida Walsh

Freida Lohse Walsh, age 79, of 106 Shanna Drive, Elizabeth City, NC, died Sunday, December 14, 2003, at her residence. She was born in New York daughter of the late, Henry and Freida Lohse, and was the wife of the late Edward Walsh.

Mrs. Walsh is survived by a close friend, Nyoka Gordon of Hertford, NC, and Mark Clark of Belvidere, NC. She is also survived by a host of friends and neighbors.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, December 17, 2003 at 9:00 AM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Irvin Ambrose officiating. Burial will follow in Westlawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the residence Tuesday, between the hours of 11:00 AM and 6:00 PM. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Clarissa Virginia Dyson Waller
Pittsburgh, PA native

Clarissa Virginia Dyson Waller, age 95, died June 14, 2003, at the home of her daughter in Palmyra, VA. She was born September 24, 1907 in Pittsburgh, PA. She was preceded in death by her husband Dr. Midford Davison Waller and was the daughter of the late Robert Otterman Dyson and Anna Gunnerman Dyson.

Survivors include a daughter, Edith Ann Waller Cartwright and husband William Robert “Bobby” Cartwright of Palmyra, VA, two sons, Midford Martin Waller and wife Dorcas Cox Waller of Elizabeth City, NC, and Robert Dyson Waller and wife Susan Ense Waller of Roxboro, NC; a sister, Annabelle Dyson McCabe of Pittsburgh, PA; seven grandchildren, Leigh Waller LaBreak of Bradenton, FL, Wendy Waller of Elizabeth City, NC, Don Martin Waller of Kill Devil Hills, NC, Stacy Waller Bracamontes of Chandler, AZ, Jill Heather Cartwright of Richmond, VA, Jodie Cartwright Brinn and husband Scott Brinn of Moseley, VA, Clarissa Waller of Roxboro, NC; one great grandson and a great granddaughter on the way; and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside funeral service will be Wednesday, June 18, 2003, at 11:00 AM in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7:00 to 8:30 PM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel and at other times at the residence of the son, Mr. & Mrs. Midford Waller, 106 Jason Drive, Elizabeth City, NC.

Brenda Baker Allen

Camden, NC - Brenda Baker Allen, 54, of 551 Highway 343 South, Camden, NC, died Wednesday, February 12, 2003 at her residence. She was born in Pasquotank Co., daughter of Ruth Trueblood Baker of Elizabeth City, NC and the late Loran F. Baker and Luther Meiggs. She was the wife of Donald C. Allen of the residence and was a hairdresser by trade.

Besides her husband and mother, Mrs. Allen is survived by a daughter, Heather Allen of Greenville, NC and a son, Chris Allen of Panama City, FL.

A funeral service will be conducted on Sunday, February 16, 2003 at 2:00 in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, NC with Rev. Dave Combs officiating. Doretta Wallace

Elizabeth City, NC - Doretta S. Ullman Wallace, age 86, former resident of Virginius Drive, Va. Beach, VA, died Friday, October 1, 2004, in Albemarle Hospital. She was a native of Pleasant City, OH, and daughter of the late Alonzo Ullman and Maggie Sproat Ullman. She was wife of the late Hoke Wallace, and a member of Princess Ann Plaza Baptist Church, Va. Beach, VA.

She is survived by one daughter, Evelyn Pitts Milam and her husband, Ronald of Elizabeth City, NC; four grandchildren, Vicki M. Wilson, Cindy M. Hill and her husband, Steven, Kim M. Hilderbrandt and her husband Chris, Kelly Milam, four great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild.

A graveside service will be Monday, October 4, 2004, at 2:00 PM, in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Norfolk, VA, with the Rev. Ronald W. Lee officiating. The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon from 4:30 PM to 6:00M PM at Twiford’s Northside Chapel, 1115 N. Frances Wallace

Barco, NC - Frances Mary Wallace, 74, of Barco, NC, died Sunday, March 9, 2003 at Sentara Center – Currituck. She was born in Baltimore, MD to the late Valentine and Bertha Jackabowski and was the widow of O. C. Wallace.

Mrs. Wallace is survived by a daughter, Karen Barnett and husband Joel of Sligo, NC; two sons, Robert Gregory of Currituck, NC and Ronald Gregory and wife Cinnamon of Nags Head, NC; six grandchildren, Shannon, Jeff, Holli, Christopher, Mason, and Remy; and one great granddaughter, Hailey. She was preceded in death by a son, Donald Gregory.

A memorial service will be conducted on Sunday, March 16, 2003 at 2:00 PM at Pilmoor United Methodist Church by the Rev. Scott Wilson – Parsons. The family will receive friends at the residence of her daughter, Karen Barnett, 117 Walnut Dr., Moyock, NC. Terry Walker

CURRITUCK - Terry Lee Walker, age 61, of 272 Bells Island Road, Currituck went peacefully to be with the Lord, Tuesday October 5, 2004, at his residence after battling cancer for the past 18 months. Mr. Walker was born November 22, 1942, in Norfolk, Virginia and was the son of the late Gavin Norval Walker and Zola Lee Walker. He was a graduate of Elizabeth City High School, a member of the Coastal Cathedral Church of God, and in 2000 he graduated from COA with an Associate of Arts Degree. He also was the former manager of City Auto Rentals. On March 9, 1967 he was married icon to the former Virginia Williams Overton.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia Walker, three sons William Robert Overton of Crescent, California, Joseph Lynn Overton and Mark Edward Overton both Currituck, NC, two daughters in law, Kathryn Overton of Kill Devil Hills and Patricia Overton of Camden, NC, and four grandchildren LeAnn Overton, Terry Lee Overton, Kyle Justin Overton and Carrie O. Hayes, and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son Durwood Lee Overton.

He is remembered for his love and devotion to his wife and family, his broad knowledge of literature, history, world leaders, current affairs and many other subjects as well. He fulfilled his dream of going to college and graduated from COA in 2000 with an Associate of Arts Degree. He also had a great love for UNC basketball, 50’s and 60’s Rock and Roll music. He has had a good sense of humor and loved to talk to anyone who would listen to the many stories he had to tell.

A graveside funeral service will be held Saturday, October 9, 2004 at 2:00 PM in Maple Cemetery with David Sawyer officiating. The family will greet friends Friday evening from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Twiford Funeral Home, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC. REBECCA MIDGETT HINTON WALKER

RALEIGH - Rebecca M. Walker died Saturday, September 11, 2004 in Raleigh. Becky was born to Peleg and Annie Midgett in Elizabeth City, NC on November 19, 1921. She was the youngest of eleven children born to a loving Christian home. After graduating from high school in Elizabeth City, she graduated from Louisburg College. Becky married icon Charles Lewis Hinton, Jr. in 1942 in Elizabeth City where they lived for many years and raised their family. After his death she married icon Walter Davis of Elizabeth City and Midland, Texas. Becky remained in Midland where she later met and married icon Jerry Walker. After his death, she moved to Raleigh to be near her son and his family. She was a Trustee at Louisburg College and a benefactor to many charities, causes and individuals.

Becky dearly loved her son and his family, her extended family, enjoyed people, had a unique sense of fashion and flair, loved her church, loved to travel, was a great sport, loved to dance, always maintained a positive attitude and was a true friend to many.

Becky is survived by her only child, Charles Lewis Hinton, III and wife, Betsy Wright Hinton of Raleigh, NC; three grandchildren, Morgan Hinton Lyon and husband, Robert Richard Lyon of Raleigh, NC, Mary Blair Hinton of Raleigh, NC, and Charles Lewis Hinton, IV, of Raleigh, NC; one great-grandchild, Davis Robert Lyon.

The family will receive friends Monday night, September 13, 2004 from 7-8 PM at Twiford’s Funeral Home, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, NC. A graveside service will be at West Lawn Memorial Park in Elizabeth City, NC at 10 AM, Tuesday, September 14, 2004, by Rev. F. Joe Griffith. A Memorial Service will be held at Edenton Street United Methodist Church in Raleigh, NC on Tuesday, September 14, 2004 at 3:30 PM. Frank J. Auriemma

FRANK J. AURIEMMA, 73, of Kill Devil Hills, NC and formerly of Holmdel, NJ, passed away peacefully, after a brief battle with lung cancer, on the morning of March 24, 2004 in his home surrounded by his loving family. Frank served in the U.S. Air Force for four years. He was employed by National Lead for thirty years, fifteen years by Translantic Computers and most recently Wendy’s of Kill Devil Hills. Frank was always an active member of his community. He was a charter member of the Holmdel First Aid Squad and Auxiliary, a member of the Holmdel Kiwanis, and a parishioner of St. Catherine’s Church, Holmdel. He recently received his first degree with the Knights of Columbus of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, Kitty Hawk. Although having been a resident of Kill Devil Hills for only three years, he loved the Outer Banks community. “Pop” was also an avid fan of the 2002 Manteo Redskins. His zest for life was an inspiration and a joy to be a part of. He will be sadly missed by his family and his many friends.

Frank was the ninth of eleven children. He is pre-deceased by his parents, Frank and Rose Auriemma; three brothers, Tony, Carmen and Ralph Auriemma; two sisters, Angie Ferrante and Millie Siano; three nephews, Dominic and Louis Ferrante and Ralph Auriemma.

Frank is survived by his wife of fifty years, Loretta (Budnick) Auriemma; four daughters, and sons-in-law, Marcella and Dennis Jiosne of Holmdel, NJ, Loretta and John Kupfer of Kitty Hawk, NC, Kathleen and Jim Hammond of Lincroft, NJ and Cynthia and Carl LaBella of Onancock, VA; five grandsons, Dennis and Jason Jiosne, John and Justin Kupfer, and Thomas LaBella; four granddaughters, Melanie Kupfer, Pamela LaBella, and Katie and Jennifer Hammond; two great-grandchildren, Michael and Amaya LaBella; two brothers, William and Lou Auriemma; three sisters, Margaret Cahill, Nancy Auriemma, and Mary Megill; and many nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, Kitty Hawk on Saturday, March 27, 2004 at 10:00 am, with the Reverend Joseph Klause, Emeritus of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church. Memorial donations may be made to Dare County Hospice, POB 1000, Manteo, NC 27954, Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, POB 510, Kitty Hawk, NC 27949, or the Outer Banks Kiwanis Club.

Robert Walker

Elizabeth City, NC - Robert Henry Walker, age 48, of 598 Okisko Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died Saturday, January 17, 2004 at his residence. He was a native of Newport RI, son of Mary Vadeboncoeur of Virginia Beach, VA, and the late Henry Walker. He was the husband of Becky Wynne Walker of Elizabeth City, NC. Mr. Walker worked as a Heating and Cooling Technician for the Smith Company

Besides his wife and mother, he is survived by two sister, Robin Bostjancic of Va. Beach, VA, and Pam Keefer of Mapel, NC.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, January 25, 2004 at Thalia Lynn Baptist Church, Va. Beach, VA. The family will greet friends at the church following the service. Information supplied by Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, Elizabeth City, NC.

Lewis Walker

Lewis Perry Walker, age 77, formerly of the 300 block of Holly Street, Elizabeth City, NC, died Friday, December 5, 2003, at South Village Nursing Home in Rocky Mount, NC. Mr. Walker, a native of Jackson County, NC, was the husband of Nina Elizabeth Howell Walker of Elizabeth City, NC, and the son of the late Winfred S. Walker and Pearl Flynn Walker. He was a retired mechanic and truck driver for Southeast Motor Lines and attended the Fountain of Life Church in Elizabeth City.

Besides his wife he is survived by a daughter, Edna Earle Meads and husband, Preston, of Elizabeth City, NC; one sister, Kate Beddingfield of York, SC; four grandchildren, Rodney Meads and wife, Melanie, Sherri Moore and husband, Mike, Karen Davis and husband, Jim, and Vicki Meads; five great grand grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Sunday, December 7, 2003, at 4:00pm at the Fountain of Life Church with Revs. Roland Cooper and Bill Mayo officiating. Military honors will be given by the VFW Post #6060. Burial will be in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the church social hall and at other times at the home of Preston and Edna Earl Meads, 505 Meadstown Road, Elizabeth City, NC.

Grace Austin

Grace Elizabeth Miller Austin, 82, of 1375 Waterlily Road, Coinjock, NC died Saturday, August 23, 2003 at Sentara Center - Currituck. She was born in Brownsville, TX to the late George Donald Miller, Sr. and the late Elizabeth Michael Miller and was the widow of Oswald Spencer Austin. She was a retired Currituck County Librarian, a member of Sharon United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, and the Currituck County Christian Women.

Mrs. Austin is survived by one daughter, Beth Austin Childers and husband John of Coinjock, NC; three sons, Donald S. Austin and wife Sue of Knotts Island, NC, Gary S. Austin and wife Pat of Grandy, NC, and Michael D. Austin and wife Stacey of Jacksonville, FL; one brother, George Donald Miller, Jr. of Conroe, TX; seven grandchildren, Wendy Burgett, Spencer P. Austin, Stephen Childers, Amy S. Childers, Pamela Younger, Christopher Austin, and Bryan Austin; and three great grandchildren, Kyle and Shane Burgett and Austin Younger. She was preceded in death by a brother, Ralph E. Miller and a grandson, Daniel Austin.

A graveside service will be conducted on Saturday, August 30, 2003 at 11:00 AM at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery by the Rev. Steve Castle. The family will receive friends at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC on Friday from 7:00 to 8:30 PM and at other times at the residence of Beth and John Childers, 1375 Waterlily Road, Coinjock, NC. Jessie Yeargin Vallas
Native of Mauldin, SC

Jessie Yeargin Vallas, age 65, of 1812 ½ North Road Street, Elizabeth City, NC, died Friday, October 1, 2004 at Albemarle Hospital. She was born in Mauldin, SC, wife of Ray Vallas of the residence, and the daughter of the late Amos and Jeanette Henderson Yeargin. Mrs. Vallas was retired from the accounting department of the United States Coast Guard, a member of Berea Baptist Church, where she served as a GA leader, and the Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter 44, where she was past matron and past district deputy grand matron, and she also was a volunteer for the Albemarle Hospital Auxiliary.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Vallas is survived by two sons, Chris Vallas and wife Cynthia of Elizabeth City, NC and Charles Vallas of Elizabeth City, NC; a step daughter, Ava Henning and husband James of Elizabeth City, NC; and four grandchildren, Kaleigh, Brittany, Rayman, and Julia.

A funeral service will be held, Tuesday, October 5, 2004 at 11:00 am in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC, with the Rev. Glenn Greenway officiating and the Rev. Roger Stanley assisting. Burial will follow in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery with Order of the Eastern Star Rites. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday evening from 7:00 until 8:30, and at other times at the residence of the son, Chris Vallas, 1105 Reid Drive, Elizabeth City, NC. Rita Vandervoort

Clifton, VA - Rita Waldron Vandervoort, 85, died Thursday, August 19, 2004 while vacationing with her family in Avon. She was born in East Orange, NJ and was a retired secretary for City Service Oil Company. Mrs. Vandervoort was a member of St. Mary’s of Sorrows Catholic Church in Fairfax, VA. She was the daughter of the late Michael Waldron and the late Margaret Waldron and the widow of Warren Francis Vandervoort.

She is survived by one daughter, Lynn Murphy and husband John of Clifton, VA; one son Keith Francis Vandervoort and wife Judy of Tulsa, OK; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at St. Mary’s of Sorrows Catholic Church on Monday, August 23, 2004 at 11:00 AM. Interment will be held in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.

Gladys Mae Tootle Vanscoy
Retired LPN

Mrs. Gladys Mae Tootle Vanscoy, age 77, of 114 Aline Drive, Elizabeth City, NC, died Thursday, June 19, 2003, at her residence. Mrs. Vanscoy was the wife of Howard Randolph Vanscoy of the residence and the daughter of the late Malcolm Emory Tootle and Carrie Mae Banks Tootle Turner. A native of Vidalia, GA, she was a member of Salem Baptist Church, a local bowling league, and a retired LPN from the Albemarle Hospital.

Besides her husband she is survived by three sons, Marion Edward Barker of Tampa, FL, Emory Glenn Barker of Portsmouth, VA, and Johnny Lee Barker of Shiloh, NC; a step-son, Lawrence R. Vanscoy of Jacksonville, FL; a sister, Dorothy Buchannan of Charlotte, NC; a brother, George Tootle of Belvidere, SC; 7 grand children; and four great grand children.

A funeral service will be Monday, June 23, 2003, at 11:00 AM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Michael Jordan officiating. Entombment will be in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 9:00 PM Sunday and in the lobby of the funeral home immediately after the service and at other times at the residence.

Patricia Ann Gillon Viacava

Patricia Ann Gillon ViaCava, age 66, of 135 West Hunter’s Trail, Elizabeth City, NC, died Monday, February 17, 2003, at her residence. Mrs. ViaCava, who previously resided in Waldwick, NJ, was the wife of Louis ViaCava, and the daughter of the late William Gillon and Elisabeth Theissing Gillon. She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church.

Besides her husband she is survived by a daughter, Lynn Anne Borelli, and husband Joseph, of Mahwah, NJ; a son, Neal ViaCava, and wife Judy, of Morrisville, PA; a sister, Joan Cronin of Lecanto, FL; and two grand-children, Dylan and Chelsea ViaCava.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, February 21, 2003, at 1:00 PM at Holy Family Catholic Church by Father Jim Buchholz. The family will receive friends at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel on Thursday evening from 7:00 to 8:30 PM and at other times at the residence.

Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, is located on, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC, is in charge of arrangements.

RICKEY C. LILLEY, JR.

Moyock, NC - Rickey C. Lilley, Jr., age 33, of 131 Robert Walker Road Moyock, NC. died Thursday evening August 19, 2004, at Albemarle Hospital from injuries received in an automobile accident. He was born November 14, 1970 in Fort Worth, Texas. He was a brick layer and attended the Assembly of God Church.

Mr. Lilley is survived by his mother and stepfather, Sarah Cotten Hess and Bill Hess of Springtown, Texas, his father and stepmother Rickey C. and Linda G. Lilley of Farmville, Virginia, and his paternal grandmother Madeline Russ Lilley of Shawboro, NC.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Johnie Lemuel Lilley and his maternal grandparents Charles and Elizabeth Ann Wood.

A graveside funeral service will be conducted Tuesday, August 24, 2004, at 1:00 P. M. at Laurel Memorial Gardens Cemetery the Rev. Murlen M. Brasted officiating.

The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the graveside.
