Jack W. Best

Jack Wallace Best, Age 79, of 538 Meadstown Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died Wednesday, August 27, 2003, in Albemarle Hospital. He was born in Dothan, AL, son of the late William Wallace and Clara Knight Best, and was the husband of Myrtle Meads Best of the residence. He was a veteran, having served in the U. S. Navy in Germany and Africa during WWII.

He is survived by one daughter, Linda Curtis of Sea Grove, NC; one son, Jake A. Best of Cedar Rapids, IA; one brother, Hopson Best, of Pensacola, FL; seven grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, August 29 at 2:00 PM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, NC with Military Honors by the William Clarence Jackson Post # 6060 of V. F. W. Burial will be in New Hollywood Cemetery. The family will receive friends the at funeral home Thursday evening from 7:00 until 8:30 PM, in the lobby of the funeral home immediately following the service, and at other times at the residence.

Beverly Vucinovic

KITTY HAWK, N.C. - BEVERLY S. RIGGS VUCINOVIC, 69, of Kitty Hawk, died, Friday, September 24, 2004, in her residence. Mrs. Vucinovic was born in Steubenville, Ohio and was a retired Registered Nurse.

Mrs. Vucinovic was a member of Wellsburg United Methodist Church in West Virginia, Presbyterian-University Hospital Nurses Alumni Association, former owner of Dip & Deli, Ivey’s Beachwear and a former member of Outer Banks Chamber of Commerce.

She was the daughter of the late Brent and Frances Bee Riggs and the wife of John J. Vucinovic.

Besides her husband surviving are a daughter; Dee-Ann Baum and a son; Brent B. Vucinovic both of Kitty Hawk, a brother; William Riggs of Wellsburg, WV and two grandchildren; Melissa and Gabriel Ciccolella. Mrs. Vucinovic was pre-deceased by her daughter; Kimberly Lee Vucinovic Ciccolella.

A Memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimers Disease Research Association, Reagan Institute, 225 N. Michigan Avenue, Floor 17, Chicago, IL 60601-7633. Twiford’s Colony Chapel, Manteo is assisting the Vucinovic family.

Christopher Michael Vacha

AVON, NC - CHRISTOPHER MICHAEL VACHA, 23, of Avon, NC died Monday, September 6, 2004 at his residence. Mr. Vacha, born in Norfolk, VA, was a cook for the Froggie Dog Restaurant and attended the Avon Worship Center.

Mr. Vacha is survived by his father and step-mother, Michael Wayne Vacha and Lisa M. Vacha and step-brother, Patrick Ford of Marion, VA; his mother and step-father, Darlene Smith Hooper and Darren Hooper of Avon, NC; three sisters, Jessica Lynn Vacha, Stephanie Leigh Vacha and Logan Jeanette Hooper, all of Avon, NC; two brothers, Richard Keith Vacha, II and Roger Darren Hooper, Jr., both of Avon, NC; maternal grandparents Donald and Shirley Smith of Moyock, NC; Paternal grandparents, George and Mildred Vacha of Marion, VA; two aunts, Susan B. Smith and Bonnie D. Williams; one uncle, Donald M. Smith, Jr.. He was preceded in death by a brother, Michael Wayne Vacha, Jr. and an uncle, Richard M. Smith.

Funeral services will be held at the Avon Worship Center on Friday, September 10, 2004 at 11:00 am with Rev. Timothy Cooper officiating. Burial will follow in the Family Cemetery, Avon. The family will receive friends at the church on Thursday evening from 7:00 to 9:00 pm and at other times at the home of his mother and step-father, Darlene and Darren Hooper, 40401 McMullen Road, Avon.

Faye Cartwright Berry

Tyner, NC - Faye Cartwright Berry, age 64, of Tyner, NC passed away on February 7, 2004. She was born on July 11, 1939 to the late Johnnie Cartwright and Gladys Stallings Cartwright Beltz, and was the loving wife of the late James Elbert Berry. She was the sister of the late Gail Cartwright Baccus. Mrs. Berry is survived by one brother, Donald Cartwright and his wife Sharon of Charlotte, NC; three children; one son Michael Berry and his wife Donna of Tyner, NC; two daughters, Kimberly White and her husband, Jeff of Garden Grove, CA; and Bonnie Overman and her husband Albreckt of Tyner, NC. Also surviving are nine grandchildren and one great grandchild. She will be greatly missed by all.

Funeral service will be Wednesday, February 11, 2004, at 1:00 PM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday evening from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM. At other times the family will be at the residence, 544 Ryland Road, Tyner, NC. Bruce Atkinson

Moyock, NC - Bruce Frank Atkinson, Jr., 53, of 181 Chatman Etheridge Road, Moyock, NC, died Saturday, July 12, 2003 at Albemarle Hospital. He was born in Columbia, SC to Harriet Cunningham Atkinson of Concord, NC and the late Bruce Frank Atkinson, Sr., and was the husband of Dianne Harris Atkinson of the residence. He was an electrician.

Besides his wife and mother, Mr. Atkinson is survived by two daughters, Julie Atkinson Caldwell and husband David of Charlotte, NC and Rachel Carmen Atkinson of the residence; one sister, Virginia Atkinson Marie of Concord, NC; two nieces, Carla and Karen Marie both of Concord, NC; and one nephew, Matthew Marie of Concord, NC.

A graveside service will be conducted on Wednesday, July 16, 2003 at 11:00 AM at Laurel Memorial Gardens, Poplar Branch, NC by Pastor Lee Porter. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 7:00 to 8:30 PM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel and at other times at the residence.

KATHRYN MORRIS KERLIN
Native of Pasquotank County, NC

Kathryn Morris Kerlin, 91, 3201 Wisconsin Ave., Washington, D.C., died Saturday evening, March 15, 2003, in the Suburban Hospital, Bethesda, Maryland. She was born in Pasquotank County, NC to the late Jesse John Morris and Kathryn Sawyer Morris and was the widow of the late Daniel W. Kerlin. Mrs. Kerlin was a former member of the Salem Baptist Church, a member of the AARP and currently was an Episcopalian.

She is survived by a daughter, Kathryn M. Cochran of Silver Springs, Maryland, a brother, Dr. Jesse John Morris of Elizabeth City and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Louise Denton and a brother, William Hythe Morris.

Graveside services will be conducted Tuesday, March 18, 2003, at 3:00pm in the Hollywood Cemetery by Rev. Rickie Steenstra. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, NC is in charge of funeral arrangements.

William E. Umphlett, Sr.,
Perquimans County Native

William E. Umphlett, Sr., age 62 of 507 Whitehat Road, Hertford, NC, died Monday, January 26, 2004, at the Albemarle Hospital. Mr. Umphlett, a native of Perquimans County, was the son of the late William Freeman Umphlett and Eula Mae Miller Umphlett. He was a retired from the Ford Motor Company, and a member of Berea Church of Christ.

Mr. Umphlett is survived by three daughters, Martha Elise Umphlett of Central, SC, Leigh Ann Umphlett of Orlando, FL, and Angela Rebekah Hooper of Havelock, NC; a son William Edward Umphlett, Jr., of Currituck, NC; a sister, Gladys Jennings of Elizabeth City, NC; a brother James Umphlett of Cody, WY; six grandchildren, Amber Elise McDaniel, Phillip Allen Ciesialka, Allisha Morgan Ciesialka, Terence Donovan Hooper, Raven Star Hooper, and Dakota James Hooper; and one great grandchild, Tristin Elise McDaniel.

A memorial service will be Thursday, January 29, 2004, at 2:00 PM at Berea Church of Christ with Minister Ira K. Furrow officiating. Burial will be in the Berea Church of Christ Cemetery.

Blanche Utz

Duck - Blanche S. Utz, 81, died Friday, August 29, 2003 at an Outer Banks Medical Facility. Mrs. Utz was born in Duck and was a homemaker. She was a former resident of Norfolk, VA and was employed with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Virginia. Mrs. Utz was a member of the Duck United Methodist Church. She was the daughter of the late Andrew and Ellen Roger Scarborough and the widow of Turner Utz.

Mrs. Utz is survived by two daughters; Judy Taylor and husband Robert of Columbia, SC and Jene Sakowski and husband Ray of Pinehurst, NC; two sisters; Marlene Ward of Duck and Melba Perry of Southern Shores; four grandchildren; Susan Sprawls, Jim Taylor, Joseph and Douglas Sakowski; two sisters-in-law, Jewell Scarborough and Ada Scarborough. She was preceeded in death by two sisters; Mildred Lewark and Ellen Etheridge and two brothers; Jim and Ray Scarborough.

A funeral service will be held Monday, September 1, 2003 at 11:00 AM at Duck United Methodist Church with Rev. David Cliff officiating. Burial will take place in the Austin Cemetery. Memorial Donations may be made to the Duck United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 8010, Duck, NC 27949.

Donald Ray Tickle

Grandy, NC - Mr. Donald Ray Tickle, age 82, of 110 Goose Wing Court, Grandy, NC died Wednesday, January 8, 2003, at Britthaven Outerbanks. Mr. Tickle was born in West Virginia, the son of the late Sidney Taylor Tickle and Sally Wallace Tickle and was the widower of Vada Snell Tickle. He was retired from the U.S. Civil Service.

Mr. Tickle is survived by two sons, Donald R. Tickle and William L. Tickle of Grandy, NC; one brother, William Archie Tickle of York, PA, two grandchildren, Patty Doyle and Donald R. Tickle III; three great grandchildren, Megan Doyle, Lauren Doyle and Kevin Tickle.

Graveside services will be Friday, January 10, 2003, at 2:00 PM in Laurel Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Thursday, January 9, 2003, from 7:00 to 8:30 PM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City and other times at the residence of Donald R. Elizabeth DePlanque Tillett

Elizabeth DePlanque Tillett, age 76, of 795 Perry’s Bridge Road, Belvidere, NC, died Monday, December 23, 2002, at her residence. Mrs. Tillett was a native of North Bergen, NJ. She was the widow of William Dexter Tillett, and the daughter of the late Cornelius Wilhelmuth Deplanque. She was a retired presser at Supac & Sons and a member of Faith Baptist Church.

Mrs. Tillett is survived by a daughter, Diana Cromwell of Belvidere, NC; a son Kenneth Tillett of Frisco, NC; six grandchildren; and three great grand- children.

A memorial service will be Friday, December 27, at 2:00 PM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Al Thompson officiating. The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:30 PM at the funeral home and at other times at the residence of her granddaughter, Kelly Cromwell, 102 Sycamore Lane, Elizabeth City, NC.

Madaline Toler

Elizabeth City, NC - Madaline Trueblood Boyce Toler, age 80, of 101 Cartwright Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died Thursday, January 22, 2004, in the Albemarle Hospital.

She was born in Perquimans County, NC, daughter of the late Nathan Trueblood and Gertie Mae Thompson Trueblood. She was a member of Pearl Street Pentecostal Church, where she served as a Sunday School Teacher for many years, was a former choir member, and a member of the Women’s Ministries for many years.

Mrs. Toler was pre deceased by her late husband, Jep T. Boyce, son-in-law Jerry Jernigan and sister Odell Sawyer, and two brothers, Leston and Aubrey Trueblood. She is survived by her husband, Ambrose “Tinse” Toler of Elizabeth City. One daughter, Joyce Ann Jernigan of Elizabeth City, and two sons, William “Birdseed” Boyce and wife Janice, and James Boyce and wife Phyllis both of Elizabeth City, NC. She was also survived by seven grandchildren, Debbie Willis and husband Donnie of Elizabeth City; Keith Boyce and wife Elaine of Elizabeth City; Dennis Boyce and wife Becca of Dudley, NC; Vestel Pendleton and husband Wayne of Elizabeth City; Sandra Osborne and husband Fred of Washington Court House, OH; Janet Chaulk and husband Ken of Belvidere, NC; and Kevin Boyce and wife Joanna of Ranson, WV. Mrs. Toler was also survived by her angels, 17 great grandchildren, Amber Hickman; Morgan Willis; Chelsea, Zackery and Olivia Boyce; Dean, Savannah and Jackson Boyce; Joshua, Caitlyn, Joel, and Benjamin Pendleton; Kali, Elizabeth, Justin, and Ella Osborne; and Miles Chaulk. She was also survived by a sister, Dorothy Brice of Stockbridge, GA. She was a very Godly woman and we all will truly miss her, but we will all see her again on the other side.

A funeral service will be held Sunday, January 25, 2004, at Pearl Street Pentecostal Church, at 2:30 PM, with the Rev. Steven Strickland officiating. Burial will follow in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. William Boyce 121 W. Hunters Trail, Elizabeth City, NC. ALMA GODFREY TOLER
Camden County resident

Alma Godfrey Toler, 91, of 213 Country Club Road, Camden, NC died Tuesday May 4, 2004, in the Guardian Care Nursing Home. She was born in Elizabeth City, NC to the late Joshua Nathan and Bertha Lee Warden Godfrey and was the widow of the late David M. Toler. Mrs. Toler was a member of the Camden United Methodist Church and was a former employee of the E. C. Hosiery Mill.

She is survived by two daughters, Joyce Dozier of Camden, NC and Shirley Basnight of Newport News, VA; a sister, Florene “Pete” Crawley of California and a brother, Irvin Godfrey of Elizabeth City, NC. Also, she is survived by five grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. Mrs. Toler was preceded in death by five sisters and four brothers, Gracie Willoughby, Mae Ward, Maggie Riddick, Mildred Godfrey, Doris Halstead, William Gaither Godfrey, Josh Lee Godfrey, Johnny Godfrey and Raymond Godfrey.

Funeral services will be conducted Friday, May 7, 2004, at 2:00pm in the Twiford Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church Street, Elizabeth City by Rev. David Moehring. Burial will be in the West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends and relatives in the lobby of the funeral home immediately following the chapel service and at other times at the residence of her daughter, Joyce Dozier, 213 Country Club Road, Camden, NC. Inez G. Tolson

MANTEO, NC - INEZ GRAY TOLSON, 82, of Manteo, NC died Tuesday, March 16, 2004 at her residence. Mrs. Tolson was born in Avon, NC and was a homemaker. She was the daughter of the late William Andrew and Cora Gray, and the widow of the late Arnold G. Tolson, Sr.. She was also preceded in death by a son, William A. Tolson and a brother, James Gray.

Mrs. Tolson is survived by four sons, Arnold G. Tolson, Jr. of Idaho, Darrell G. Tolson, Robert L. Tolson and Dean M. Tolson, all of Manteo, NC; two sisters, Emelis G. Meekins of Manteo, NC and Beth G. Quidley of Buxton, NC; fourteen grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Manteo First Assembly of God on Satuday, March 20, 2004 at 11:00 am with Rev. Ron Denham and Rev. Deborah Tolson officiating. Burial will be in the Cudworth Cemetery, Wanchese, NC. The family will receive friends at Twiford’s Funeral Home, Manteo on Friday evening from 7:00 to 8:30 pm.

Virginia Topping

Shiloh, NC - Virginia Taft Topping, age 78, of 1385 South 343, Shiloh, NC, died Thursday, July 22, 2004 in Albemarle Hospital. She was a native of Elizabeth City, NC, and was the daughter of the late Dallas Louis Taft and Susan Sears Taft. She was the wife of the late Roosevelt Topping, and a member of Wesley United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Topping is survived by one daughter, Jo-Anne Stephenson and her husband Louis of Shiloh, NC; one son, Bruce Topping and his wife Anita of Elizabeth City, NC; three grandchildren, Randy and Gerald Stephenson, and Jennifer Ward, and five great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by one brother, Talmadge Taft.

A graveside service will be Saturday, July 24, 2004 at 11:00 AM in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery with Rev. Roland Cooper officiating. The family will be at the residence, 1385 South 343, Shiloh, NC. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 404 Jessup Street, Elizabeth City, NC 27909, or to the Albemarle Hospice, PO Box 189, Elizabeth City, NC 27907-0189.

George "Buzzy" Townsend, Jr.

George “Buzzy” Townsend, 45, of 2209 Center Hill Highway, Hertford, NC, died Tuesday, February 4, 2003 at Albemarle Hospital. He was born in Norfolk, VA to the late George Lee Townsend, Sr. and the late Sarah Lane Townsend and was a veteran of the U. S. Navy.

Mr. Townsend is survived by one sister, Jerri Edwards of Elizabeth City, NC; two brothers, David Lane of Hertford, NC and William Lane of Norfolk, VA; two nieces, Sarah Spivey and Heather Edwards and one great nephew, Joeseph Spivey.

A memorial service will be conducted on Friday, February 7, 2003 at 2:00 PM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel by the Rev. F. Joe Griffith. The family will receive friends at the home of Edith Mansfield, 2221 Center Hill Highway, Hertford, NC. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Perquimans County Rescue Squad, P. O. Box 191 Hertford, NC 27944.

Calvin Sawyer

CALVIN STAPLES SAWYER, 80 of 1314 Shawboro Road died Saturday, July 17, 2004, in the Albemarle Hospital. He was a native of Camden County son of the late Coston and Emily Staples Sawyer and the husband of Marguerite Pell Sawyer for over 60 years. He was a member of the Providence Baptist Church, the Shawboro Ruitans, Hall Masonic Lodge #53 AF & AM, the Indian Ridge Order of the Eastern Star Chapter #319 where he was a Past Patron. Mr. Sawyer was associated with Sawyers House of Furniture and Eyeball Inc. Rental Company.

Besides his wife he is survived by: one son Baxter Sawyer and his wife Kay of Gregory, NC; one sister Vivian Hodges of Lincoln, NC; and three brothers C.L. Sawyer, Ambrose Sawyer and William Sawyer all of Elizabeth City, NC. He was preceeded in death by two sisters Gertie Basnight and Emily Davenport, and one brother Sam Sawyer.

Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday afternoon, July 20, 2004 at 3:00 PM in Twifords Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC by Revs. Charles Stevens and Charles Wellons. Burial will follow in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery with Masonic Rites. The family will receive friends at the Funeral Home Monday evening from 7:00 until 8:00 PM, and other times at their residence. Sara Margaret Bright Twiford

Elizabeth City, NC - Sara Margaret Bright Twiford, age 87, of Elizabeth City, NC died Monday, November 11, 2002 in Guardian Care Nursing Home. She was born in Pasquotank County, daughter of the late Ernest LaSalle Bright and Christian Cornelius Warden Bright, and was the widow of Leslie J. Twiford. Mrs. Twiford was retired from Emmanuel Day Care Center and was a charter member of Emmanuel Baptist Church.

She is survived by three daughters, Melva T. Hardison and husband, Charles, of Camden, NC, Dawn Miller and husband, David, of Elizabeth City, NC, and Velma Dean Saunders and husband, Buck, of Zephyrhills, Fl.; one son, John Thomas Twiford of Elizabeth City, NC; one sister Vilma Umphlett of Elizabeth City, NC; ten grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be conducted Thursday, November 14, 2002, at 11:00am in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Ed Hawkins officiating. Burial will be in Old Hollywood Cemetery. The family will greets friends and relatives in the lobby of the funeral home immediately following the service.

Jane Twiford

Manteo, NC - Jane White Twiford, 53, died Monday, June 28th at Chesapeake Hospital. Born in Edenton, she lived in Manteo for over 30 years. Jane will be remembered for her joyful and persistent spirit even in the most difficult of times. She loved her work as a magistrate for Betty Mann as well as her work and customers at Star Value and Dune’s Restaurant. Jane loved her church family and Petey the chirpy gray cockatiel that was her constant companion.

She is survived by her daughter, Jennifer Meekins; her father Sid White, Sr. of Edenton; brothers, Sid White, Jr and his wife Norma of Edenton and Jerry White and his wife Freda of Chesterfield, VA; a sister Judy Hollowell of Hertford.

A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held Friday, July 2nd at 11 AM at Roanoke Island Presbyterian Church, Hwy 64@ Harriot. A graveside service will be held at 3:00 PM at the Beaver Hill Cemetery in Edenton. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made in Jane’s memory to Roanoke Island Presbyterian church, P.O. box 1465, Manteo, NC 27954.

Marjorie S. Twiford

NORFOLK– Marjorie Spruill Twiford, 83, passed away peacefully August 3, 2004. Born in Creswell, NC., she was preceded in death by her husband, Aubrey S. Twiford and one grandchild. She is survived by five children, Carolyn Twiford of Norfolk, Anne Bradley and husband Jake of Virginia Beach, Susan Pearce and husband Maurice of Chesapeake, William Twiford and wife Marie of Blackstone, and Robert Twiford and wife Pat of Chesapeake. She also leaves two brothers, William Clyde Spruill, Jr. and Ray Spruill and wife Syble in North Carolina; fourteen grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends on Monday, August 9th, from 7-8 PM at the Twiford Colonial Chapel 929 S. Battlefield Blvd. A chapel service will be held Tuesday, August 10th at 1PM with interment to follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Granby Street, Norfolk.
