Herbert Oden, Sr.

Hatteras - Herbert Linwood Oden, Sr., 88, died Thursday, July 8, 2004 at his residence in Beaufort, NC. Mr. Oden was born in Hatteras, retired as former owner of Burrus Oil Company and was a member of the Hatteras United Methodist Church. He was the son of the late Erskine Oden and the late Lina Ballance Oden and the widower of Achsah Burrus Oden.

He is survived by two daughters, Sonja Doran of Mt. Vernon, Washington and Molly Stewart of Chandler, AZ; one son, Herbert Linwood Oden, Jr. of Harkers Island, NC; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Hatteras United Methodist Church on Saturday, July, 10, 2004 at 11:00 AM with Masonic Rites and Rev. Charles Moseley and Dwight Burrus will officiate. Burial will follow in the Ballance Family Cemetery. A visitation will be at the church on Friday, July 9, 2004 from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM. The family will be at the home of L.B. Fulcher, 58213 Fulcher Lane, Hatteras at other times.

Milford Twine
Elizabeth City Resident

Milford Ray “Mickey” Twine, 79, of 710 Briarwood Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died Friday, March 21, 2003 at Chesapeake General Hospital. He was born in Perquimans County, NC to the late Oscar Keaton and Della Stallings Twine and was the husband of Llewellyn “Sis” Sawyer Twine of the home. He was a heavy equipment operator for Stevenson Sand Company.

Mr. Twine is survived by three sons, Milford “Buddy” Twine, Jr. and family of Woodville, Steve Twine and family of Elizabeth City, and David Twine and family of Rhode Island; six daughters, Brenda Sawyer and family of Hertford, Patsy Brickhouse and family of South Mills, Judy Humphries and family of Powells Point, Sandra Gainey and family of Winterville, Linda Gregory and family of Shawboro, and Lisa Bullock and family of Bear Grass; eighteen grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted on Monday, March 24, 2003 at 2:00 PM at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery by the Rev. Steve Strickland. The family will be at the residence.

Col. Robert Oliver

Southern Shores - Col. Robert Terrence Oliver, 67, died on Monday, May 10, 2004 at his home following a brief battle with cancer. Col. Oliver was born in Indianapolis, IN. Col. Oliver was retired from the U.S. Army after thirty years of service, including two tours in Vietnam. He was a member of the Holy Redeemer Catholic Church and the Outer Banks Kiwanis Club. Col. Oliver was the son of Dr. and Mrs. Samuel H. Oliver of Pebble Beach, CA, and the late Lucille Westerfield Oliver and the husband of Caroline Campbell Oliver of Southern Shores.

Besides, his wife, he is survived by five sons; Scott and Karren Oliver of Linden, VA, Todd Oliver and Craig Vicens of Seattle, WA, David and Lisa Oliver of Juneau, AK, Mark and Candy Johnson of Fort Belvoir, VA and Jay and Stephanie McNamara of Great Bridge, VA; one sister, JoAnne Minnick of Boise, ID; six grandchildren, Kevin, Kalla, Brian, Derek, Margot, and A.J; one great grandson, Jayce and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Judith Kay Oliver.

A Funeral Mass will be held at the Holy Redeemer Catholic Church on Saturday, May 15, 2004 at 11:00 AM with Father Joseph Klaus officiating. Blanche "Bobbie" Twiddy

East Lake - Blanche “Bobbie” Kessinger Twiddy, 67, died Wednesday, September 22, 2004 at Britthaven Nursing Home. Mrs. Twiddy was born in Buffalo, KY and was retired from cafeteria work with the Dare County Schools. She was a member of the East Lake Holiness Church and Order of the Eastern Star, Manteo Chapter #79. Mrs. Twiddy was the daughter of the late Henry Clay Kessinger and the late Elizabeth Nelson Kessinger and the widow of Earl Willis Twiddy.

She is survived by Patricia N. “Trish” Twiddy of Grandy; five sons, Jimmy Twiddy, Tommy Twiddy and David Twiddy of Manns Harbor, Earl Glenn Twiddy of Grandy and Joe Twiddy of Newhall, CA; two brothers, Arvin Kessinger of Buffalo, KY, Bernie Kessinger of Hodgensville, KY and eight grandchildren.

A Celebration of life will be held at Twiford’s Colony Chapel, Manteo, on Saturday, September 25, 2004 at 11:00 AM with Rev. Anthony Ralph officiating and Eastern Star Rites. Burial will take place in the East Lake Methodist Church Cemetery. A Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Friday, September 24th from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM. The family will be at the home of Tommy and Shannon Twiddy, 6915 Pecan Lane, Manns Harbor. Mary H. Turner

Norfolk – Mary H. Turner, 78, passed away on March 16th, 2004. Mrs. Turner was preceded in death by her parents Eleanor Holloway and William Holloway and her husband Robert D. Turner. She retired from the Navy Exchange at the Naval Station Norfolk after 20 years of employment, she had been a member of the King’s Daughters and for several years was a candy stripe volunteer at DePaul Hospital.

She is survived by her children Robert D. Turner and his wife Pat of New Bern NC, Sue Clous and her husband Bud of Norfolk, Jo Anne Wallace and her husband John of Wilmington NC, Richard W. Turner and his wife Avis of Eden Prarie MN, and Robert B. Turner of Norfolk; many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the Twiford’s Colonial Chapel 929 S. Battlefield Blvd on Thursday, March 18th, 2004 from 7-8 PM. A graveside service will be held at the Episcopal Church Cemetery in Elizabeth City NC on Friday, March 19th at 11 AM.

Mickey Turner

Camden, NC - Mickey Wynn Turner, age 43, of 106 Duke Street, Camden, NC, died at his residence on Saturday, August 2, 2003. Mr. Turner was born in Pasquotank County, NC, son of the late Rufus Turner, Jr. and Irene Williamson Turner Rogerson of Elizabeth City, NC. He attended Riddle Pentecostal Holiness Church, and was retired from the U.S. Army.

Besides his mother, Mr. Turner is survived by: his step-father, Ray Rogerson; two brothers Mike Turner and Mark Turner both of Camden NC one grandmother Mary White of Elizabeth City; one step-grandmother Linda Rogerson of Elizabeth City; one step-sister Meg Trueblood of Elizabeth City; and one step-brother Mark Rogerson of Elizabeth City.

A funeral service will be conducted on Wednesday, August 6, 2003 at 2:00 PM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, officiated by the Rev. Roland Cooper. Burial will follow in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the lobby of the funeral home following the service, and at other times at the residence of Ray and Irene Rogerson at 616 Pitt Chapel Road in Elizabeth City. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Riddle Pentecostal Holiness Church, 945 Sandy Hood Road, Shiloh, NC 27923. Joseph Turci

Manteo, NC - Joseph Raymond Turci, 50, died on Thursday, March 25, 2004 due to a highway accident. Mr. Turci was born in Peeks Kill, NY and was a tow truck driver for Pugh’s Car Care in Manteo. He was the son of the late Donald Raymond Turci and Joan Gilbert Nutly and husband William of New York.

Besides his mother and step-father, he is survived by two children; Lisa Marie Turci of Selbyville, DE and Joseph Raymond Turci of Denver, CO; four sisters, Kathy Turci, Katrina Turci, Beverly Turci and Joan Marie Turci; one brother, Donald Turci; one sister that preceded him in death, Diane Turci; a long-time companion, Jo Jo Rockwell of Manteo and four step-children, Amanda Bliss, Jacquelyn Laurel, Jennifer Elizabeth and Kaitlyn Brook;

A Service of Remembrance will be held at Mr. Turci’s residence at 105 Fannin Mill Road, Manteo on Sunday, March 28, 2004 at 5:00 PM.

WILLIAM H. TRUEBLOOD
Pasquotank Co. native

William H. Trueblood, 60, of 3053 W. Main Street, Extd, Elizabeth City, NC died Monday, September 22, 2003, in the Norfolk Sentara Hospital. He was born in Pasquotank County to Geneva Modlin Trueblood and the late Clarence Trueblood. Mr. Trueblood was a retired self-employed diesel mechanic and a member of the Berea Baptist Church.

Besides his mother, Mr. Trueblood is survived by his wife of 43 years, Dollie Bateman Trueblood, a daughter, Lisa T. Matthews and husband, Chris, of Kill Devil Hills, NC; two sons, Michael Wayne Trueblood and wife, Bonita, of Shawboro, NC and William “Buddy” Trueblood of Ohio; one brother, Kent Trueblood of Lake Gaston, NC. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, Christopher, Savannah, Moody, Heather, Tyler, Levi, and Wyatt and a great granddaughter, Melanie.

Funeral services will be conducted Friday, September 26, 2003, at 2:00pm in the Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC by Rev. Glenn Greenway. The family will greet friends and relatives in the lobby of the funeral home immediately following the service and at other times at their residence. Herman Ray Meads, Sr.
Resident of Elizabeth City, NC

Herman Ray Meads, Sr., age 70, of Elizabeth City, NC, died Tuesday, July 29, 2003 at Pitt Memorial Hospital. He was born in Pasquotank County, NC; son of the late Charlie H. and Gertie Weeks Meads. He was owner and operator of Best Steak Restaurant and Microtel Inn & Suites, a crop duster, having loved to fly for many years, and was loved dearly by his family for his generosity and kindness towards them and others.

Mr. Meads, is survived by two daughters, Madonna Meads Ambrose and husband Roger of Camden, NC, and Jeanette Meads Kimball and husband Don of Eldersburg, MD; two sons, Brent Meads and wife Sandy of Elizabeth City, NC, and Ray Meads, Jr. and wife Lorrie of High Point, NC; eight grandchildren, Tammie, Brandon, Landon, B.J., Sarah, Hilary, Aaron, and Anna; three sisters, Carolyn Harding, Janie Blaylock, Regina Meads; and three brothers, Vance, Talmadge, and Frankie Meads.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 2, 2003 at 2:00 pm in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in New Hollywood Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday evening from 7:00 until 8:30 pm, and at other times at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Brent Meads, 1015 John White Road, Elizabeth City, NC. Mary Sawyer Trueblood

Mary Sawyer Trueblood, 89, formerly of Pritchard Street, Elizabeth City, NC, died Thursday, August 7, 2003, in the St. Francis Nursing Center, Newport News, VA. She was born in Pasquotank County, NC, to the late Eddie and Ida Banks Sawyer and was the widow of George W. Trueblood. Mrs. Trueblood was a member of the Union United Methodist Church.

She is survived by one daughter, Carolyn T. Pietrzak and husband, David, of Cleveland, OH; one son, George E. Trueblood and wife, Margaret, of Newport News, VA; five grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 am on Tuesday, August 12, 2003, in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, NC, by the Rev. Arthur Leary. Burial will be in New Hollywood Cemetery. The family will greet friends and relatives in the lobby of the funeral home immediately following the service. Linda Louise Trueblood
Perquimans County Resident

Linda Louise Trueblood, age 38, of 116 Longview Estates, Hertford, NC, died Saturday, November 2, 2002, at her residence. She was the daughter of Roger Lee Trueblood, Sr., and Edna Allen Trueblood of Elizabeth City, NC. She was a native of Pasquotank County and a bakery manager for Golden Corral.

Besides her parents, she is survived by a daughter, Holly Michelle Bundy; and a son, Howard Wesley “BJ” Bundy, Jr., both of Elizabeth City, NC; a sister, Sherry Trueblood Gibbs, and her husband Leonard of Elizabeth City, NC; a brother, Roger Lee Trueblood, Jr., and his wife Jean of Elizabeth City, NC. She is also survived by close friends, Wes and Jamie Bundy, Mabel Bundly, Mike Bowen, Christy Bowen, and Christopher (Buddy) Bowen. She was predeceased by a brother, Cary Glenn Trueblood.

A memorial service will be Thursday, November 7, 2002, at 2:00 PM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. David Mansingh and Ernest Cole officiating. The family will receive friends in the lobby of the funeral home immediately following the service.

Thomas Mebane

Manteo, NC - Captain Thomas Hill Mebane, Jr., 78, of 349 Mother Vineyard Road, Manteo, NC, died Thursday, January 29, 2004 at his residence. He was born in Decatur, GA, son of the late Thomas Hill and Anna Belle Wingo Mebane. He retired in 1985 as a Ship Master, captaining super tankers for the Merchant Marine Service and last sailed as Master of the newly launched Chemical Pioneer that sailed out of Newport News, VA. Mr. Mebane was an active member of St. Andrews By-The-Sea Episcopal Church, Nags Head where he had served as a vestry member, a junior warden, sang bass in the choir, and was a member of The Brotherhood of St. Andrew; and served in many capacities including president of the Manteo Lion’s Club.

Mr. Mebane is survived by his wife of fifty years, Connie Godbout Mebane of the residence; three daughters, Susan T. Carter of Centerville, VA, Dr. Dorothy J. Mebane of Chapel Hill, NC, and Diane L. Mebane of Belmar, NJ; two sons, Richard Hill Mebane of Great Falls, VA and Thomas Hill Wallace of Atlanta, GA; one sister, Dorothy Hales of Temple, GA; one brother, William Wingo Mebane of Dayton, MD; and ten grandchildren.

A memorial service will be announced at a later date. The family will be at the residence. Mary Trousdale

Lenoir, NC - Mary Pogue Trousdale, 83, of 1104 East Williams Circle, Elizabeth City, NC died Thursday, April 24, 2003 at Shair Rest Home in Lenoir, NC. She was born in Maury County, TN to the late Anderson Young and Janie Payton Pogue and was the widow of Raymond Estes Trousdale. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Elizabeth City, NC.

Mrs. Trousdale is survived by a son, Raymond Wayne Trousdale and wife Anne of Lenoir, NC. She was preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers.

A funeral service will be conducted on Monday, April 28, 2003 at 2:00 PM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Clyde Denny. Private burial will follow at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Caldwell County Hospice, 902 Kirkwood Street, Northwest, Lenoir, NC 28645 or to a charity of one’s choice.

Milton E. Tadlock, Sr.

Milton E. Tadlock, Sr., 78, of 114 Whitehurst Street, Elizabeth City, NC, died Monday, August 18, 2003 at his residence. He was born in Perquimans County, NC to the late James E. and Lessie Gray Tadlock and was the husband of Norma Brite Tadlock of the residence. He was retired from the Elizabeth City – Pasquotank Public School System and was a veteran of World War II having served in the United States Marine Corps.

Besides his wife, Mr. Tadlock is survived by one daughter, Carol Ann Lane and husband E. J. of Elizabeth City, NC; one son, Milton E. Tadlock, Jr. and wife Beth of Elizabeth City, NC; one brother, Noah W. Tadlock of Richland, WA; four grandchildren; one step grandchild; six great grandchildren and one step great grandchild.

A graveside service will be conducted on Thursday, August 21, 2003 at 3:00 PM at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery by the Rev. Terry Lane White. The family will receive friends at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel on Wednesday from 7:00 to 8:30 PM and at other times at the home of Milton and Beth Tadlock, 1949 Rivershore Road, Elizabeth City, NC. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Albemarle Hospice, P. O. Box 189, Elizabeth City, NC 27907-0189.

Lessie Mae Johnson Burton

Lessie Mae Johnson Burton, age 93, of 901 West Elizabeth Street, Elizabeth City, NC, died Wednesday, October 23, 2002, at the Albemarle Hospital. Mrs. Burton was a native of Chowan County, NC, the widow of Ralph Jerome Burton, and the daughter of the late James Washington Johnson and Laura Virginia Sawyer. She was the retired president, owner, and saleslady for Burton Mercantile Company. Having lived most of her live in Elizabeth City she was the oldest member of Fountain of Life Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Mrs. Burton is survived by a son, Monty M., and his wife Joyce, Marsh of Elizabeth City, NC; a sister, Selma, and her husband Elwood, Ritchie of Elizabeth City, NC; a grandson, Terry, and his wife Catherine, Marsh of Gretna, LA; two grandchildren, Jennifer, and her husband Mike, Waters, and Terry Marsh, Jr.; one great grandson, Joseph Monty Waters, and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be Saturday, October 26, 2002, at 2:00 PM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Bill Mayo officiating. Burial will be in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends immediately after the service in the lobby of the funeral home and at other times at the residence of the son, Mr. & Mrs. Monty M. Marsh, 905 West Elizabeth Street, Elizabeth City, NC.

David Tapper

VIRGINIA BEACH - PH1 David M. Tapper, 32, died August 20, 2003 while serving his country. Mr. Tapper was born in Camden, NJ to Kenneth and Judith Tapper. Mr. Tapper was a Navy Seal.

He left behind his parents, his loving wife, Tracy; two daughters, Vanessa and Talia; two sons, Raimen and Jared; four sisters, Judi, Ruth, Brenda and Diana and a host of other family members and friends.

Private services will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made to the Naval Special Warfare Foundation, P.O. Box 5365, VA Beach, VA 23471.

David Edison Tarkington

Hertford, NC - David Edison Tarkington, 49, of 288 Body Road, Hertford, NC, died Saturday, October 19, 2002 at Cancer Treatment Centers of America in Tulsa, OK. He was born in Pasquotank County, NC, the son of the late John Edison and Thelma Maitland Tarkington and was the husband of Rebecca Futrell Tarkington of the home. He was a boat builder with Regulator Marine in Edenton, NC.

Besides his wife, Mr. Tarkington is survived by a daughter, Kelli Tarkington of Elizabeth City, NC; a step daughter, Amanda Wiggins and husband Atibu of Hertford, NC; a brother, Gene Tarkington of MD and a grandson, Armante’ Jones of Hertford, NC. He was preceded in death by a brother, Dallas Tarkington.

A graveside service will be conducted on Thursday, October 24, 2002 at 2:00 pm at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel on Wednesday from 7:00 to 8:30 pm and at other times at the residence.

Ida Etheridge Tatum

Elizabeth City, NC - Ida Etheridge Tatum, age 73, 891 Body Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died Friday, March 28, 2003 at Albemarle Hospital. She was born in Elizabeth City, NC, daughter of the late Christopher and Lizzie Hopkins Etheridge, and was the widow of Clarence Elwood Tatum. She was a member of Corinth Baptist Church.

Mrs. Tatum is survived by a daughter, Jo Tatum Meads and husband Walter Ray of Elizabeth City, NC; two sons, Brownie Tatum and wife Jenny and Chubby Tatum and wife Imogene both of Elizabeth City, NC; seven grandchildren, Jason and Lisa Meads, Brandon, Summer, and Wesley Tatum, Kelli Robeson, and Heather Hammack; three great grandchildren; and a very special friend, Louise Raper.

A graveside service will be held on Sunday, March 30, 2003 at 2:00 pm in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. Roy Head officiating. Memorial donations may be made to Corinth Baptist Church Building Fund, 1035 U.S. 17 South, Elizabeth City, NC, 27909.

Joseph R. Beck

KNOTTS ISLAND - Joseph Russell Beck, 39, passed quietly with loving family near on Dec. 25, 2003. He was an avid hunter, loved fishing and his may friends. He is survived by his mother, June E. Beck, sister, Susan R. Garrison; one niece, Crystal F. Jenner; one great-niece, Taylor F. Jenner; good friend, Wayne Phillips; and loads of family and friends. Joseph was preceded in death by his father, Robert Joseph Beck and his brother, Michael Joseph Beck, His passing will be handled privately by his family and close friends.
