Grace Teller

Grace Dulin Teller, 89, of 8443 Caratoke Highway, Powells Point, NC died at her residence Sunday, December 21, 2003. She was born in Currituck County to the late Jesse Baum and Laura Dulin Sawyer and was the widow of the late William Christopher Teller. Mrs. Teller was a member of the Powells Point Christian Church.

She is survived by a daughter, Betty Teller LoCascio of Cape May, NJ; two sons, William Christopher Teller II of Mattaponi, VA. and Caleb T. Teller of Port Jervis, NY; two sisters, Norma Wulf of Norfolk, VA and Doris Potts of Waverly, VA; 10 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, one sister, and a grandson.

Graveside services will be conducted Tuesday, December 23, 2003 at 2:00pm in the Powells Point Baptist Church Cemetery by Rev. Eugene McLawhorn. Twiford Funeral Home, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, NC is in charge of funeral arrangements.

Joseph Thank

Nags Head, NC - Joseph Francis Thank, Jr., died Tuesday, April 6, 2004 at Albemarle Hospital in Elizabeth City, NC. Mr. Thank was born September 27, 1926 in Wallace, Idaho. He was the son of the late Joseph Francis Thank, Sr. and Jean Brown Thank.

Mr. Thank was a veteran of WWII, a member of the American Legion Post 26, and the Knights of Columbus. He was an active participant in the Outer Banks Senior Games and a member of the YMCA.

Mr. Thank was and employee of the Federal Government in Washington, DC before retiring to Nags Head, NC in 1986. He was an avid fisherman and was often sighted riding on his Harley Davidson.

Mr. Thank was the beloved husband of Margaret Hunley Thank, his wife of 53 years; father of Pam of Oakland, MD; grandfather of Julie M. Caruso of Raleigh, NC and Christopher W. Stover of Oakland, MD.

Services will be held at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, Kitty Hawk, NC on Monday, April 12, 2004 at 11:00 am with Father Joseph Klaus officiating.

Ruth Ann Porter Thomas
Native of Townsend, DE

Ruth Ann Porter Thomas, age 62, of 1053 Bayview Road, Powells Point, NC, died Wednesday, September 22, 2004, in Albemarle Hospital. She was a native of Townsend, DE, and was the daughter of the late Nathan William Porter, Sr. and Katherine Alberta Lowman Porter Owens. She was the wife of the late Randolph Thomas, Sr.

She is survived by two sons, Curtis Roland Thomas of Grandy, NC, and Anthony Wayne Thomas of Jackson, NC; two step sons, Randolph Thomas, Jr. of Anderson, SC, and Don Thomas of Chesapeake, VA; three sisters, Shirley Parker of Chesapeake, VA, Ella Sasnett of Powells Point, NC, and Jane Koontz of Grandy, NC; three grandchildren.

A graveside service will be Sunday, September 26, 2004 at 3:00 PM in Powells Point Christian Church Cemetery, with the Rev. David Coxson and the Rev. Ronnie Midgett officiating. The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 7:00 to 8:30 PM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC, and at other times at the residence of her sister, Ella Sasnett, 1053 Bayview Road, Powells Point, NC. Memorial donations may be made to The American Cancer Society, 404 Jessup Street, Elizabeth City, NC 27909. Twiford Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Therese Thomas

Therese “Terry” Havranck Thomas, 57, of 1038 Crosswinds Drive, Elizabeth City, NC, formerly of New Jersey departed this life unexpectedly at her home December 18, 2003. She resided in Long Branch & Middletown, NJ, before moving to NC with her family in 1990.

Her first career was in nursing, and more recently she worked in customer service. She was a Eucharistic Minister at Holy Family Roman Catholic Church.

She is survived by her beloved husband of 34 years, Joseph M. Thomas, a daughter, Carolyn T. Dukes and husband William K. Dukes, and a son, Jeffrey Edward Thomas, all of Elizabeth City, NC.

She was predeceased by her dear son, Joseph Michael (J) Thomas. She also leaves a brother, Robert V. Havranck and wife Mary of Shrewburg, NJ, two sisters, Mary J. Havranck of Long Branch, NJ, and Sally Guilmart and husband Kenneth of Durham, NC, and two nieces and one nephew.

A Funeral Mass will be conducted, Monday, December 22, 2003 at 10:00 am in Holy Family Roman Catholic Church with Father James Buchholz. Burial will be held at a later date in St. Johns Cemetery, in Queens, NY. The family will receive friends at the funeral home, Sunday evening from 5:00 until 7:00 pm, and at other times at the residence. Memorial donation may be made to Union Mission Ministries, P.O. Donald Letourneau

Harbinger, NC - Donald L. Letourneau, 68, died Thursday, August 12, 2004 at his residence. Mr. Letourneau was born in Monteque City, MA and was raised in East Hartford, CT. He was a veteran having served in the U.S. Air Force. Mr. Letourneau was a retired greens keeper for the Village of Nags Head Golf Links. He was the son of the late Harry Letourneau and the late Katherine Letourneau.

He is survived by his wife, Polly and their three daughters, Christine Copley of Durham, Geraldine Letourneau of Harbinger and Nicole Letourneau of Cary; two brothers, Thomas Letourneau of Bayshore, NY and Harry Letourneau, Jr. of Florida.

A memorial service will be held at the Holy Redeemer Catholic Church on Tuesday, August 17, 2004 at 11:00 AM with Father Robert Nugent officiating. The family requests that memorial donations be made to the American Lung Association of NC, P.O. Box 27985, Raleigh, NC 27611.

Bettie Forbes Beckham
Native of Camden, NC

Bettie Forbes Beckham, age 94, 141 Taylors Lane, Camden, NC, died Monday, January 26, 2004 in Winslow Memorial Nursing Home. She was born in Camden County, NC, daughter of the late Gideon Bell and Susan Duncan Forbes and was the widow of Lang Middleton Beckham. She was a member of Riddle Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Mrs. Beckham is survived by two daughters, Vivian B. Williamson of Camden, NC, and Lola B. Harrison of Shiloh, NC; four sisters, Margaret Kight of Shiloh, NC, Louise Harrison of Camden, NC, Henrietta Harrison of Shiloh, NC, and Amy Moore of Shiloh, NC; a brother, Melvin Bradley Forbes of Shiloh, NC; three grandchildren, Elbert Harrison, James Harrison, and Karen Chaney; and several great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, and foster children. She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Daphine Barnes.

A funeral service will be held Wednesday, January 28, 2004 at 2:00 pm in Riddle Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. Roland Cooper officiating. Burial will follow in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the residence of the grandson, Mr. and Mrs. Elbert Harrison, 441 Sandy Hook Road, Camden, NC. Erdis Leon Lewis
Hyde County Native

Erdis Leon Lewis, age 85, of 310 Jessup Street, Elizabeth City, NC, died Friday, February 14, 2003, at the Albemarle Hospital. Mr. Lewis, a native of Hyde County, was the husband of Alma Williams Lewis of the residence and the son of the late William Earnest Lewis and Lydia Midgett Lewis. He was a US Army Veteran of WW II, a retired mechanic from the Naval Air Station, an honorary member of the Masons, and a member of Forest Park Church of God.

Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, Dusty Lewis of Jacksonville, FL, and Rusty Lewis of Wake Forest, NC; two sisters, Alma L. Williams and Erma Dell Spencer both of Fairfield, NC; two brothers, Leslie Lewis and Wilbur Lewis both of Fairfield, NC; four grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be Monday, February 17, 2003, at 2:00 PM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Scott Neal officiating.

Kathryn “Kay” Becker
Native of Syracuse, NY

Kathryn “Kay”Becker, age 97, of 27450 Dee Drive, Bonita Springs, FL, died Thursday, March 4, 2004 at Sentara Nursing Center Currituck. She was born in Syracuse, NY, daughter of the late John and Emma Coleman Steggall and the widow of Franklin J. Becker. Mrs. Becker is survived by a son, Bob Becker and wife Berni of Poplar Branch, NC. She was a member a First Presbyterian Church in Bonita Springs, FL, Eastern Star Morning Star, chapter #289 in Marcellus, NY, and Hiawtha-Solvay chapter #567.

A memorial service will be held Monday, March 8, 2004 at 11:00 am in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. F. Joe Griffith officiating. Burial will take place at a later date in Oakwood-Morningside Cemetery, Syracuse, NY. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice. William Thomas, MD

Dr. William R. Thomas, 81, of 1801 Darian Drive, Elizabeth City, NC, died Monday, December 23, 2002 at Albemarle Hospital. He was born in Washington, PA, the son of the late Ralph William and Mary Doak Thomas and was the husband of Nancy Herman Thomas of the home. He was a retired general practitioner having served in Elizabeth City for over 20 years, a veteran of the Korean War having served in the U. S. Navy as a flight surgeon on a destroyer, a retired Captain and Medical Officer in the United States Coast Guard serving in Elizabeth City, NC and Yorktown, VA, and served at the Health Department in Elizabeth City for three years. He was a member of the Cosmopolitan Club and was a Mason.

Besides his wife, Dr. Thomas is survived by eight daughters, Susan Thomas King of Albemarle, NC, Barbara Thomas Jones of Copperas Cove, TX, Cindy Lee Thomas Hailey of Hampton, VA, Deborah Tadt of Taylorsville, NC, Rhonda Roarke and Pamela McCarthy both of Palm Beach Gardens, FL, Polly Ryan of Richmond, VA, and Rebecca Nairy of Buzzards Bay, MA; three sons, William Osborn Thomas of Fayetteville, NC, Robert Ralph Thomas of Elizabeth City, NC, and David Hall Thomas of High Point, NC; twenty four grandchildren and six great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a wife, Lois Jane Osborn Thomas.

A funeral service will be conducted on Friday, December 27, 2002 at 11:00 am at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Haywood Gillikin. Burial with military honors will follow at Old Hollywood Cemetery The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 7:00 to 8:30 pm and at other times at the residence. Joel Oscar Thompson

Chesapeake – Joel Oscar Thompson, 72 died September 23, 2004 at his residence. Mr. Thompson was worn in Bladen County, NC to the late James Montgomery and Illa Jane Davis Thompson. He was a veteran having served in the US Army and had worked as a supervisor for Virginia Chemical.

Survivors include his son, Richard Paul Rush of Chesapeake; five sisters, Dorothy Thompson of Charlotte Count House, VA, Cailie Manning of Tampa, FL, Betty Freedman of Portsmouth, , Alice Malbone of Chesapeake, and Jeanie Mitchell and husband Bill of Chesapeake; a sister in law, Marlene Thompson of Suffolk; two brothers, David Thompson and wife Jeannie of Suffolk and Robert Thompson and wife Barbara of Salem, VA; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held on Sunday at 2:30 pm at Covenant UMC, 2004 Dock Landing Rd., Chesapeake, with a reception immediately following in the social hall.

Edna Thompson

Elizabeth City, NC - Edna Davis Thompson, age 66, of 408 Walnut Street, Elizabeth City, NC died Friday, August 8, 2003, at Albemarle Hospital. She was born in Hyde County, NC, daughter of the late Carl Ray Davis, and of Hazel Payne Davis of Elizabeth City, and was the wife of William L. Thompson, Jr. She was a homemaker and a member of Blackwell Memorial Baptist Church. Mrs. Thompson was the founder of “TOPS” (Take Off Pounds Sensibly), of NC 341.

Besides her husband and mother, Mrs. Thompson is survived by: two daughters, Susan Bently and husband Joe, and Renee Harry, all of Elizabeth City; two sons, Carl Harry and wife Debbie, and William L. Thompson, III, and wife Amy, all of Elizabeth City; two sisters, Linda Phthisic, and Marie Corbett and husband Wayne; one brother Ronald Davis and wife Nellie Mae; four grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, August 12, 2003, at 2:00 PM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Dr. Bob Crisp. Burial will follow at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the lobby of the funeral home following the service. The family will be at the daughter’s home, 109 Oakwood Lane, Elizabeth City. Sadie Thoms

Maple, NC - Sadie Fay Twiddy Thoms, age 72, of 295 Maple Road, Maple, NC, died Thursday, June 17, 2004, at her residence. She was a native of Elizabeth City, NC, and the daughter of the late Monroe Twiddy and Sadie Perry Twiddy. She was the wife of Raymond George Thoms of the residence, and a member of Faith Baptist Church.

Besides her husband she is survived by one daughter, Alice Hourmouzis and her husband Sam, of Kill Devil Hills, NC; three step daughters, Christine Thoms of Chesapeake, VA, Jeannie Ward and her husband Gus, of Harbinger, NC, Sandi Peterson and her husband Joe, of WI; four sons, Glenn Hopkins and his wife Beth, of Elizabeth City, NC, Eddie Hopkins and his wife Laura of Atlanta, GA, Jerry Hopkins and his friend Jancie of Barco, NC, Roy Hopkins and wife Linda, of Harbinger, NC; three step sons, Raymond Thoms of Norfolk, VA, David Thoms of Elizabeth City, NC, Robert Lamphere of MD; one sister, Mary Manoli and her husband John of Kill Devil Hills, NC; seven grandchildren, eleven step grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

A graveside service will be Saturday, June 19, 2004, at 2:00 PM in Laurel Memorial Gardens Cemetery with the Rev. Al Thompson officiating. The family will be at the residence, 295 Maple Road, Maple, NC. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC is in charge of arrangements.

Charles D. Edwards

CHARLES DONALD EDWARDS, 58, of Waves, NC died Tuesday, July 15, 2003 in a Chesapeake, VA hospital. Mr. Edwards was born on the Blimp Base in Weeksville, NC and was retired from the NCDOT, Ferry Division. He was a member of the Fairhaven United Methodist Church, the Cape Hatteras Masonic Lodge #698, the Hatteras Island Chapter 303 of the Order of Eastern Star, and the Order of Amaranth, Coastal Court 12. He was the son of the late Woodrow W. and Mellie Midgett Edwards and was also preceded in death by a brother, Woodrow W. Edwards, Jr.

Mr. Edwards is survived by a sister, Judy E. Williams and huband, Ronald of Waves, NC; a brother, Dewey W. Edwards and wife, Betty Ruth of Franklin, VA; a sister-in-law, Diane A. Edwards of Virginia Bch, VA; three aunts, Gloria Maddrey and husband, James of Chesapeake, VA, Sybil Williams of Virginia Bch, VA, and Nellie Farrow of Waves, NC; several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at the Fairhaven United Methodist Church, Waves, NC on Friday, July 18, 2003 at 3:00 pm with Rev. Berry Taylor and Rev. Susie W. Fitch-Slater. The family will receive friends at the church on Thursday evening from 7:00 to 9:00 pm. Burial will be in the Family Cemetery in Waves.

Eric A. Throne

ERIC ANDREW THRONE, 25, of Buxton, NC died Tuesday, July 8, 2003 in Buxton. He was born in Rockport, Maine and was a commercial and charter fisherman. Eric was loved by his family and many friends. He loved being on the water, fishing both commercially and for recreation and also enjoyed surfing and hunting. Hatteras Island was his life.

Eric is survived by his mother, Elizabeth “Beth” Holmes Mulder, his father and step-mother, Andrew and Joanne Throne, a sister Kristin Throne, three brothers, Ian Mulder, Max Mulder and Jake Throne, all of Buxton.

A memorial service will be held at Our Lady of the Sea Catholic Church on Tuesday, July 15, 2003 at 12:00 Noon, with Father Andre Isacc officiating.

Garnet Stevenson

Avon, NC - Garnet Gray Stevenson, 71, of 40120 Harbor Road, Avon, NC, died Tuesday, April 6, 2004 at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro, NC. She was born in Avon, NC to the late Seymour and Sarah Robinson Gray and was the widow of James Clarence Stevenson. She was retired from the National Park Service and was a longtime member of St. Johns United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Stevenson is survived by two daughters, Sheila D. Latham and husband Rev. Taylor Latham of Stoneville, NC and Debra Lynn Stevenson of Crestview, FL; seven sisters, Marceline Gray, Phyllis Stowe, Olive O’Neal, Gail Matney, and Edith Scarborough all of Avon, NC, Sylvia Midgett of Waves, NC, and Clara Williams of Buxton, NC; three brothers, Seymour F. Gray, Bannister B. Gray, and Robert P. Gray all of Avon, NC; and three granddaughters, Sarah Leanna Latham, Rachel Larissa Latham, and Mary Eileen Latham.

A funeral service will be conducted on Saturday, April 10, 2004 at 2:00 PM at St. Johns United Methodist Church by the Rev. Susie Fitch-Slater and the Rev. Leon Fowler. Burial will be in the Gray Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church on Friday from 7:00 to 8:30 PM.

William Wayne Stokely

Elizabeth City, NC - William Wayne Stokely, age 62, of 709 North Road Street, Elizabeth City, NC, died Thursday, February 5, 2004 in Nags Head, NC. He was born in Front Royal, VA, son of the late William Burnett Stokely and Kathleen Melton Stokely, and was husband of Gail Dunbar Stokely of the residence.

Mr. Stokely was a retired truck driver.

Besides his wife he is survived by two sons, Jeffery Wayne Stokely of Elizabeth City, NC, and Michael Breland Stokely of Norfolk, VA; two sisters, Barbara Stokely Kirkpatrick, and Carol Jeanne Stokely-Hunt both of Pensacola, FL; one brother, James L Counselman of Monroe LA; two grandchildren. He was predeceased by one brother, Tommy F. Stokely.

A memorial service will be Sunday, February 8, 2004 at 2:00 PM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel. The family will receive friends in the lobby of the funeral home immediately following the service. Betty Jean Bell

Waterlily, NC - Betty Jean Bell, age 70 of Waterlily Rd., Coinjock, NC died Tuesday, February 25, 2003 at her residence. She was born in Pasquotank Co., NC; daughter of the late Horace Wright Bell, Sr. and the late Janie Elizabeth Whaley Bell. She retired from Dupont and was a veteran, having served in the U. S. Air Force.

Ms. Bell is survived by two brothers, Horace W. Bell, Jr. and his wife, Joyce of Maple, NC and Robert M. Bell and his wife, Dot, of LaGrange, NC. She was predeceased by a sister, Miriam Bell Ange.

A graveside service will be conducted on Saturday, March 1, 2003 at 11:00 am in Old Hollywood Cemetery with Rev. Dale Pace officiating. The family will be at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Horace Bell, 186 Maple Rd., Maple, NC 27956. Memorial donations may be made to Rohoboth Baptist Church, P. O. Luella Stollings
Native of Manistee, Michigan

Luella Racine Stollings, age 88, of 133 Coinjock Baptist Church Road Coinjock, NC, died Saturday, August 23, 2003, at Sentara Barco Nursing Center in Barco, NC. Born in Manistee Michigan, she was the daughter of the late Elzia and May Cloutier Racine, and was the widow of Thomas Edward Stollings. She was a homemaker, a member of St. Katherine Drexel Catholic Church in Maple, NC, a charter member of American Legion Post 288 in Coinjock, NC for twenty nine years, a member of the Fleet Reserve Association and William Clarence Jackson VFW Post 6060.

Mrs. Stollings is survived by: two daughters Marie Ann Crouse of Moyock, NC, and Mary Jean Jones of Coinjock, NC; and one brother Jack Racine of Michigan; one sister Virginia Starns of California; ten grandchildren, twenty two great grandchildren and eleven great great grandchildren. She was predeceased by one daughter Frances Luella Netherland.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, August 27, 2003 at 2:00 PM in the St. Katharine Drexel Catholic Church in Maple NC with Father Jim Buchholz officiating. Burial will follow in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Church immediately following the service. Anyone wishing to may make Memorial Contributions to the Church.

Edward Belisle

Edward D. Belisle Sr., 57, beloved husband, father and grandfather, went to be with the Lord Oct. 3, 2004. He was born Oct. 8, 1946, in Holyoke, Mass. After serving two tours of duty in Vietnam, he retired from the military in 1987. He then worked for the U.S. Postal Service where he retired in 2001. He is survived by his wife, Mi Chong Belisle; a son, Edward Belisle and wife Jaclyn; granddaughter, Hannah; a brother, a niece and a nephew. He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Evelyn Belisle. A service will be Thursday at 1 p.m. in Twiford Colonial Chapel, 929 S. Battlefield Blvd. Family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
