Lillian Stonecypher

Chesapeake – Lillian Ledford Stonecypher, 64, passed away peacefully after a long illness, on April 19, 2004, in her home on Ballahack Road, in Chesapeake, Va, with her loving husband George by her side.

Lil was from Hayesville, N.C. and had lived for the past 25 years in Chesapeake. She was predeceased by her mother & father, Rolen and Buena Swaim Ledford and a brother, J.B. Ledford.

She is survived by her husband, George R. Stonecypher, and her loving children and grandchildren; Daniel and wife Marsha Stonecypher and their son Mark; June and husband Billy Lowry and their son Nathan; and Marla Stonecypher Kirby and her children Ryan and Rachel.

Lil is also survived by her sisters, Geneva Leverette and husband Robert of Douglasville GA, Joan Wheeler and husband Gene of Dallas, TX; brothers Jerome Ledford and wife Betty of Wasburn, MO and Walt Ledford and wife Pat of Conyers, GA.

Lil celebrated life, enjoyed and entertained her family and friends at all times. She retired from the City of Chesapeake, Public Works Department. She was a member of Lake Drummond Baptist Church.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, April 21st from 6 until 8 p.m. at Twiford’s Colonial Chapel, 929 S. Battlefield Blvd. Chesapeake. Services will be conducted at Twiford’s Colonial Chapel by Rev. Jim Trautz on Thursday, April 22nd at 2:00 p.m. with burial to follow at Chesapeake Memorial Gardens, Cedar Road. Family and friends will be received at the Kello Bldg. at Lake Drummond Baptist Church on Ballahack Road following the burial.

Clark Strachan

Nags Head - Clark Christopher Strachan was released from his earthly bonds on June 6, 2004. Born October 23, 1962 in Sewickley, Pennsylvania, Clark was the proprietor of Gulfstream Pools of the Outer Banks until its sale in February 2004.

Clark is survived by his wife, Shiqponja, father Ronald, brothers Kevin and Brian, sister Ronda and dog Akita.

A memorial service will be held Friday, June 11, 2004 at 7:30 PM at Twiford’s Funeral Home in Manteo. Guests are welcome at Shiqponja’s home immediately following the memorial until 10:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, the Strachan family asks that donations be made to the Dare County Hospice, P.O. Box 1000, Manteo, NC 27954 in Clark’s name.

Twiford’s Colony Chapel, Manteo, is assisting the family with these arrangements.

Martin Paul Beickert, Jr.
Native of Long Island, NY

Mr. Martin Paul Beickert, Jr., age 70, of 113 Walnut Drive, Moyock, NC, died Thursday, July 1, 2004 at Chesapeake General Hospital. Mr. Beickert, a native of Queens, NY, was the husband of Georgia Matthews Howell Beickert of the residence and the son of the late Martin Paul Beickert, Sr., and Evelyn Bidwell Beickert. He was a Korean Veteran of the U.S. Marines, a retired ship-fitter at the Norfolk Dredging Company and a member of Moyock Assembly of God Church.

Besides his wife he is survived by four daughters, Davina B. Spry and husband Terry Lee Spry, Sr., of Suffolk, VA, Patricia B. Barrs of Moyock, NC, Catherine B. Howell and husband Andy Ray Howell of Shawboro, NC, and Samatha B. Roche and husband Larry Wayne Roche of Virginia Beach, VA; three sons, Martin Paul Beickert, III, of Moyock, NC, Mark Alan Beickert and wife Sandra of Moyock, NC, and Matthew Wayne Beickert and wife Amie of Moyock, NC; one sister Dale Clemente of Surfside, SC; three brothers, Michael Boyle of Voohees, NJ, George Boyle of Cobleskill, NY, and Gregory Boyle of Middlesex, NJ; sixteen grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his first wife, Ethel Bonifer Beickert, and two brothers, Charles Boyle and Jeffery Boyle.

Funeral services will be Sunday, July 4, 2004, at 2:00 PM at Moyock Assembly of God Church with the Rev. Scott Pollard and the Rev. Joe Bougher officiating. Burial will follow in Moyock Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the residence. Charles Eldridge LaNier
Native of New Hanover County, NC

Charles Eldridge LaNier, age 76, of 5736 Jessup Station Court, Richmond, VA, formerly of Blounts Creek, NC, died Sunday, July 11, 2004 at his residence. He was born in Wilmington, NC, son of the late John LaNier and Lillian Taylor LaNier and was the husband of Erlean Pritchard LaNier of the residence. Mr. LaNier was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in WWII, veteran of the U.S. Army Reserves, Air Force Reserves, and the Merchant Marines, and was a retired aircraft electrician for the civil service, a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disabled American Veterans.

Besides his wife, Mr. LaNier is survived by a daughter, Beth Page LaNier of Glen Allen, VA; three sisters, Evelyn LaNier Bankos of Virginia Beach, VA, Eleanor LaNier Morton of Wilmington, NC, and Erma LaNier of Southern Shores, NC; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A graveside memorial service will be held Saturday, July 17, 2004 at 11:00 am in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. George Roberson officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday evening from 7:00 until 8:30. Memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 434 Fayetteville Street, West, Raleigh, NC 27601. Walton Lee Straley

Walton “Walt” L. Straley, 90, of 3850 Mooreshore Road, Kitty Hawk, NC died Monday evening in the Albemarle Hospital. He was born in Mercersburg, PA, to the late John E. and Mary E. Allison Straley. Mr. Straley was the widower of the late Anna Hester Bobbitt McMullan Straley. He was a retired Greyhound bus driver for the Pittsburgh Bus Line, a member of the B. P. O. Elks #856, a Methodist, a member of the American Legion and a veteran of World War II. Mr. Straley was also a former employee for the Kitty Hawk Fishing Pier and a loyal employee of many years for Walter R. Davis.

He is survived by a stepson, Charles O. “C.O.” McMullan and wife, Audrey, of Elizabeth City, a step granddaughter, Wanda McMullan of Elizabeth City, a sister, Izetta Creamer of Chambersburg, PA, two nephews, John Cramer and Gilbert Cramer of PA, a niece, Pam Cramer of PA, and one step great grandchild. He is also survived by a devoted loving friend, Linda Bonds of the home. Mr. Straley was preceded in death by a brother, George Straley and a step grandson, Monty Jolley.

Graveside services will be conducted Thursday, December 19, 2002, at 2:00pm in the Austin Cemetery, Kitty Hawk by Rev. Eugene McLawhorn. Immediately following the funeral service, the family will greet friends and relatives at the gravesite. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Edith Lewis

Grandy, NC - Mrs. Edith Lupton Lewis, age 62, of 795 Poplar Branch Road, Grandy, NC died Monday, February 23, 2004, at her residence. Mrs. Lewis was born in Currituck County, NC, the daughter of the late James Metrue and Edith Mintz Lupton and was the widow of Warren J. Lewis. She was a retired school teacher with the Camden Middle School and a member of the Poplar Branch Baptist Church.

Mrs. Lewis is survived by one daughter, Denise Lewis Fallon of Grandy, NC; two sons, Warren Metrue Lewis of Grandy, NC and Robert Michael Lewis of Poplar Branch, NC; one brother, James Lupton of Little River, SC; and nine grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted Thursday, February 26, 2004, at 11:00 AM in the Baum Cemetery with the Rev. Bill Thorn officiating. The family will be at the residence of Denise Lewis Fallon at 100 Andrew Road, Grandy, NC.

Carolyn Frances West Jordan

Native of Chowan, NC - Carolyn Frances West Jordan, age 58, of 1700 Edgewood Drive, Elizabeth City, NC, died Monday, April 26, 2004, in Chesapeake General Hospital. She was a native of Chowan, NC, and was the daughter of the late Willie Reed West and Sarah Chappell West, and the wife of Thomas Jacob Jordan of the residence. She was a Preschool teacher with Blackwell Memorial Baptist Church.

She is survived by one daughter, Melissa C. Jordan of the residence; one son, Wesley T. Jordan also of the residence; one half sister, Estelle Dempsey of Austin, TX; one brother, Gordan K. West of Sanford, NC; two half brothers, William R. West of Dotham, AL, and Phillip C. West of Clovis, NM.

A funeral service will be Thursday, April 29, 2004, at 11:00 AM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC, with Rev. Dr. Bob Crisp officiating. Burial will be in Jordan Cemetery, Tyner, NC. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel and at other times at the residence. Laura Mae Buckman Strathearn

Elizabeth City, NC - Laura B. Strathearn, age 73 of 121 Olivet Cir, Elizabeth City, NC died Tuesday, February 11, 2003 at Albemarle Hospital. She was born in Lima, NY; daughter of the late Fredrick and Ida Buckman and was the widow of William Richard Strathearn. She was a nurses aid, a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church and a member of the Dorcus Group at the church.

Mrs. Strathern is survived by two daughters, Annette S. Forbes of South Mills, NC and Paulette S. Chrisley of Dublin, VA; four sons, Lyle Edward Strathearn, Edward Strathearn, Gary Strathearn, and Walter Strathearn, all of Elizabeth City, NC; a sister, Tke Carpenter and her husband, John S., Sr. of Rochester, NY and several brothers.

A graveside service will be conducted on Friday, February 14, 2003 at 3:00 pm in New Hollywood Cemetery with Dr. James Slade and Pastor Claude Steen officiating. The family will receive friends at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, NC Thursday evening from 7:00 until 8:30 PM and at other times at the residence. June W. Joseph

June Betsy Wilson Joseph, age 82, of 163 Dozier Road, Moyock, NC, died Thursday, October 23, 2003, at Albemarle Hospital. Mrs. Joseph, a native of Luzerne, PA, was the widow of John Thomas Joseph and the daughter of the late Robert Wilson and Faith Hopkins Wilson. She was a retired preschool teacher.

Mrs. Joseph is survived by a son, Robert Joseph of Moyock, NC; four grandchildren, Christopher Joseph, Jason Joseph, Brandon Vernon, and Cassandra Vernon; four great grandchildren, Mitchell Joseph, Spencer Joseph, Alex Joseph, and Katelyn Joseph.

No services are planned. The family will receive friends at the residence. Lina Stevens Larson
Artist Laureate of Elizabeth City

Lina Stevens Larson, age 100, of 1521 Hopkins Drive, Elizabeth City, NC, died Friday, April 25, 2003 at Guardian Care Nursing Home. She was born in Elizabeth City March 10, 1903. She was the widow of Victor Hooper and Warren Larson and the daughter of the late Edgar Morris Stevens and Emma Gilbert Stevens. She had attended East Carolina University and Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore for nurses training and was a member of Cann Memorial Presbyterian Church, Studio Gallery Artists, and the Pasquotank Arts Council.

Mrs. Larson is survived by two daughters, Angeline Jackson of Elizabeth City, and Jane Larson of Suffolk, VA; one brother, J. Howard Stevens of Elizabeth City; and nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by a sister, Rebecca S. Burrus and a brother, Edgar Stevens.

A funeral service will be Monday, April 28, 2003 at 3:30 PM with the Rev. Jeff Heath officiating at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel. Burial will be in New Hollywood Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the lobby of the funeral home immediately after the service. Charles Junior Strickland
Native of Four Oaks, NC

Charles Junior Strickland, age 68, of 150 Ivon Drive, Moyock, NC, died Thursday, October 30, 2003, at the Albemarle Hospital. Mr. Strickland, a native of Four Oaks, NC, was the widower of Lessie Yvonne Mathias Strickland and the son of the late John Henry Strickland and Neva Stanley Strickland. He was a veteran of the US Army, a retired carpenter, and a Baptist.

Mr. Strickland is survived by a daughter, Geneva Marie Strickland of Chesapeake, VA; two sons, William G. Strickland of Moyock, NC, and Charles W. Strickland of Chesapeake, VA; a step daughter, Patricia Carver of Chesapeake, VA; a step son, Eugene W. Culpepper of Hertford, NC; a sister, Liddy May Stanley of Castle Haynes, NC; a brother, Henry Earl Strickland of Goldsboro, NC; eight grandchildren; and one great grandchild.

A graveside funeral service will be Monday, November 3, 2003, at 11:00 AM at Chesapeake Memorial Gardens Cemetery with the Rev. Wayne Sawyer officiating. The family will receive friends at Twiford’s Northside Chapel, 1115 North Road Street, Elizabeth City, NC, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM Sunday and at other times at the residence.

James Strock
Native of East Rochester, Ohio

James Vernon Strock, age 66, of 1912 Providence Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died at his residence on Sunday, November 2, 2003. Mr. Strock was born in East Rochester, Ohio, son of the late William Melvin and Dorothy Virginia Syme Sheatsley, and was the husband of Janice Day Strock of the residence. He was a retired machine shop supervisor at Allied Signal, Aerospace Division, and a member of the Elizabeth City Loyal Order of the Moose.

Besides his wife, Mr. Strock is survived by: two daughters, Shannon Huff of Elizabeth City, NC and Julie Harpt of Arizona; three sons, Bradley Strock, Edward Strock, and Scott Strock, all of Ohio; two sisters, Shirley Wolf of Ohio, and Kay Copeland of Georgia; and six grandchildren.

April Nelanne Stuart, age 25, of 179 Bell’s Island Road, Currituck, NC, died Thursday, August 21, 2003, at UNC Chapel Hill Hospital. April was born in Norfolk, VA, and was a recent graduate of Mercer University Walter F. George School of Law in Macon, GA. She received a BS in Biology at Wake Forrest University where she majored in biology and minored in chemistry. She was Valedictorian of Currituck County High School, Class of 1996. She was a member of Future Farmers of America, Beta Club, Ducks Unlimited and other organizations. She also held many awards for her quilting talents. April is survived by both parents Watson Stuart of Bell’s Island, NC and Kathy Chilton of Chesapeake, VA, and a close friend Harold E. (Chick) Gerard of Virginia Beach, VA.

April is also survived by: her brother, Hunter T. Stuart of Bell’s Island, NC; two sisters Amber Stuart and Katelyn Stuart, both of Suffolk, VA; maternal grandparents Martha and Samuel Chilton of Suffolk, VA; paternal grandparents Harrell and Nell Stuart of Bell’s Island, NC; and by a host of many other family and friends who loved her dearly.

April enjoyed life to the fullest including travels and study in Europe. She had a passion for life and accomplished and conquered many adventures in her short lifetime.

A memorial gathering celebrating April’s life will be held on Saturday August 30, 2003 at 3:00 PM at the residence of Nell and Harrell Stuart, 771 Bell’s Island Road, Currituck, NC. The family requests that memorial donations may be made to the Future Farmers of America or Duck’s Unlimited. Wilbur R. Bell

OCRACOKE, NC - WILBUR ROLLINS BELL, 81, died on March 16, 2004 at his residence. Mr. Bell was born on May 20, 1922 in Harrison County, Kentucky, to parents, Mac Rollins Bell and Clara Rogers Bell. He resided in Cynthiana, Kentucky until moving to Ocracoke in 1987. Mr. Bell was a veteran of WWII, serving in the U.S. Marine Corps, 1st Division, stationed in the South Pacific from January 1043 to June 1945. He was a devoted father to his sons, serving as Scout Master and mentor, sharing in their interests, and supporting them tirelessly. At the time of his retirement, he was employed by the Kentucky State Division of Forestry. He became a local favorite on Ocracoke, driving an island tour carriage with his beloved horse, Cookie. Mr. Bell also spent many years providing fish-cleaning services to the charter boat business. He was an active member of the Ocracoke United Methodist Church assisting in many capacities, and he volunteered his time for Meals on Wheels and the Ocracoke Preservation Society. In his later years he kept busy growing and tending his beautiful roses.

He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Macky Staton Bell; son, Dr. Richard McMurtry Bell and daughter-in-law Paddy Bell of Camden, SC; son Mac Rollins Bell of Frankfort, KY; sister Louise Bell of Lexington, KY; grand-daughters, Heather Poell, Christy Bell, and Brandi Bell, great-grandson, Phoenix Bell-Yates; and devoted friend, “Pussycat.” This loving father, grandfather, and friend will be greatly missed.

A memorial service with full military honors will be held at the Ocracoke United Methodist Church on Saturday, March 20, 2004 at 1:00 pm. Charles Suderno

Elizabeth City, NC - Charles Anthony Suderno, Sr., age 87, of 103 Sutton Drive, Elizabeth City, NC, died Friday, June 18, 2004, in the Albemarle Hospital. He was a native of New York City, NY. He was the son of the late Joseph Suderno and Nancy Ingue Suderno, and was the husband of Laura Stilson Griffith Suderno of the residence. He was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church. He served in the United States Air force for 32 years, and was retired from Civil Service Yorktown Naval Weapons Station. He was also in Bermuda for over a year working with the government on radio towers. Mr. Suderno served in the Korean War, WWII, and during the Vietnam War.

The Suderno family lived in Cape Charles, VA, Bedford, VA, and Lynchburg, VA, before moving to Elizabeth City, NC.

Besides his wife he is survived by five daughters, Nancy Carter of Waynesboro, VA, Mary Laufer of Huntinton, WV, Sandra Puckett of Randolph, MA, Theresa Lipshitz of Kingsburg, CA, and Laura Gray of Fortson, GA; five sons, John William Griffith, III of Great Bridge, VA, David N. Griffith of Cape Charles, VA, Bruce E. Griffith of Bethel, VT, Charles A. Suderno, Jr. of Hickory, NC, and William C. Suderno of Steveson, AL; two brothers, Rosario “Ross” Suderno of Richfield, CA, and Peter Suderno of Bellflower, CA; many grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was predeceased by a sister and a brother.

A funeral service will be held in the Holy Family Catholic Church Monday, June 21, 2004 at 11:00 AM with Wojciech Chudziak officiating. The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 7:00 pm to 8:30 PM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC. At other times the family will be at the residence, 103 Sutton Drive, Elizabeth City, NC. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Doris A. "Polly" Summerlin

Elizabeth City, NC - Doris A. “Polly” Summerlin, 73, of 500 Maple Street, Elizabeth City, NC died Saturday, May 31, 2003 at Albemarle Hospital. She was born in Warren County, NC to the late William H. Abbott Sr. and the late Norvie Short Abbott and was the widow of Cleveland Randolph Pridgen and John Henry Summerlin. She was a retired Registered Nurse with Albemarle Hospital for many years.

Mrs. Summerlin is survived by one son, William Randy Pridgen and wife Sharon of Hertford, NC; two sisters, Norvie “Gertie” Deland and Carolyn Pitzing both of Norlina, NC; two brothers, William H. “Monk” Abbott, Jr. of Norlina, NC and O. C. “Bill” Abbott of Louisburg, NC; and two step grandsons, Charles and Norman Finley.

A funeral service will be conducted on Tuesday, June 3, 2003 at 2:00 PM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel by the Rev. F. Joe Griffith. A graveside service will be conducted on Wednesday, June 4, 2003 at 2:00 PM at Sulphur Springs Baptist Church Cemetery, Warrenton, NC. The family will receive friends at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel on Monday from 7:00 to 8:30 PM and at other times at the residence. Guy S. Bennett, Jr.

Guy Smith Bennett, Jr., age 75, of 300 Magnolia Drive, Camden, NC, died Friday, August 15, 2003, at his residence. He was born in Beaufort County, NC, son of the late Guy Smith and Roberta Malason Bennett, Sr. Mr. Bennett was a civil service worker and served in the US Army.

He is survived by three sisters, Veva Flemings of Knightdale, NC, Mildred Tetterton of Washington, NC, and Lola B. Wright of Belhaven, NC.

A graveside service will be Monday, August 18, 2003, at 2:00 PM in the Wright Family Cemetery with Military Honors by the William Clarence Jackson Post # 6060. The family will assemble at the funeral home at 1:00 PM. At other times the family will be at the residence. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Wanchese - Deborah Hooper Swain, 48, died Wednesday, May 5, 2004 at her daughter’s residence near Raleigh. Mrs. Swain was born in Buxton, NC and was a homemaker. She was the daughter of the late Luther William Hooper and the late Sarah Annie Swindell Hooper and the wife of Stephen Ralph Swain of Wanchese.

Besides her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Sabrina Townsend and husband David of Hollywood, MD and Bobbie Jo Wescott of Wanchese; one son, Bryan Joseph Wescott and wife Rasha of Coral Springs, FL; three sisters, Alpaine Midgett of Rodanthe, Rachel Ewell of Rome, TX and Clara Gallop of Wanchese; one brother, Luther Elwood Hooper of Wanchese; two granddaughters, Sheyanne Rose Wescott and Natalie Farmer.

A Service of Remembrance will be held at Twiford’s Colony Chapel, Manteo, on Tuesday, May 11, 2004 at 2:00 PM with Rev. Robert Pitsch officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 930 B Wellness Drive, Greenville, NC 27834.

Twiford’s Funeral Home, Manteo, is assisting the family with these arrangements.

Kathryn Bell

MANTEO, NC - KATHRYN MARIE STOCKLIN BELL, 94, of Manteo, NC died Tuesday, February 03, 2004 in Nags Head. Mrs. Bell was born in Columbus, Ohio and was a retired church secretary. She was the daughter of the late Otto and Mary Trott Stocklin and the widow of Frank Bell. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Judith Ann Miller.

Mrs. Bell is survived by two sons, Donald Frank Bell of Philadelphia, PA and Robert Paul Bell of Indianapolis, IN; nine grandchildren, two of which are Vickie White of Manteo and Lisa Rhodes of Kill Devil Hills and seventeen great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at Flanner and Buchanan Funeral Center-Washington Park North at 11:00 AM on Friday, February 6, 2004. Entombment will immediately follow in the Washington Park North Cemetery in Indianapolis, IN.
