Florence Swartz

Florence Bowen Swartz, 73, died on Friday, November 28, 2003 at her residence. Mrs. Swartz was born in Hogg Island, VA and was co-owner of Swartz Fisheries Inc. in Frisco. She was a long-time resident of Frisco and a member of the Cape Hatteras Baptist Church and recently moved to Elizabeth City. She was the daughter of the late Eli and Grace Robbins Bowen and was the wife of Robert “Bob” Swartz of the home.

Besides her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Mary Nannette Zepp of Newport News, VA and Delores Ann Belvin of New Port Richie, FL; one brother, Irving Bowen of Nassawadox, VA.

Graveside services will be held at Laurel Memorial Gardens, Grandy, on Sunday, November 30, 2003 at 3:00 pm with the Rev. John Cullop, of the Cape Hatteras Baptist Church officiating. The family will receive friends at 324 Planters Run Drive, Elizabeth City. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Albemarle Hospice, POB 189, Elizabeth City, NC 27909.

Robert Swartz

Robert “Bob” Leroy Swartz, 90, of 324 Planter’s Run Elizabeth City, NC, and Hatteras, NC, died Thursday August 26, 2004, at his residence in Elizabeth City. He was owner of Swartz Fisheries Inc, in the Hatteras community and sold commercial fishing supplies. He was born January 20, 1914, in Bellevue, Ohio, and was the son of the late Calvin and Nettie Hartley Swartz. He was preceded in death by his wife Florence Bowen Swartz on November 28, 2003, and two sisters and one brother. Mr. Swartz was a graduate of York High School in Bellevue, Ohio, a charter member of the Ohio Fisherman Association and Fur Buyers, a former member of the Oregon Inlet Commission, and member of the Cape Hatteras Baptist Church.

Survivors include; two sons James Swartz and his wife Beulah of Port Clinton, Ohio and Thomas L. Swartz of Port Richie, Florida, two step-daughters, Mary Nannette Zepp of Newport News, Virginia Delores Ann Belvin of New Port Richie, Florida, and three grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be conducted Monday August 30, 2004, at 10:00 A. M. at the Cape Hatteras Baptist Church with Pastor John D. Cullop officiating. A graveside services will be held Monday at 3:00 P. M. at Laurel Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Poplar Branch, NC.

The family will receive friends Sunday August 29, 2004, from 3:00 P. M. to 5:00 P. M. and 6:30 P. M. to 8:00 P. M. at the Cape Hatteras Baptist Church, and immediately following the funeral service Monday morning at the church.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be directed to; the Cape Hatteras Baptist Church Building Fund P. O. Box 249 Buxton, NC 27920.

Cynthia Mae Belvin

COLINGTON, NC - CYNTHIA MAE HAMILTON BELVIN, 43, of Colington, NC died Thursday, May 20, 2004 in a Chesapeake, VA hospital. Mrs. Belvin was born in Elizabeth City, NC and was a homemaker and a protestant. She was the daughter of the late James Hamilton and the late Annie Miller Hamilton Rogers.

Mrs. Belvin is survived by her husband, Ricky Belvin, Sr. of the residence; two daughters, Carol Belvin of Colington and Cindy Hamilton of Barco; one son, Ricky Belvin, Jr. of Colington; one brother, Pat Hamilton of Kill Devil Hills; three grandchildren, Ryan Smith, Tavia Whisner and Amy Lundy. She is also survived by her maternal grandmother, Odessa Miller of Colington.

A Memorial Service will be held at Colington United Methodist Church on Sunday, May 23, 2004 at 2:00 pm with Rev. Bob Pitsch officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Colington United Methodist Church, POB 3425, Kill Devil Hills, NC 27948.

Fred Sweet

Fred John Sweet, 74 passed away Friday, April 9, 2004, after years of illness. He was born January 25, 1930 in Webb, Iowa to the late Joe and Minnie Luze Sweet. He left Iowa to be stationed in Elizabeth City for naval duty during the Korean War. Mr. Sweet settled in Elizabeth City and made it his home for 50 years. He began a trucking and livestock business after his military service and continued that work for 22 years. In 1980, he began a power-washing business and later had a lawnmower repair shop at his home. He enjoyed fixing things, working hard, and fishing. Mr. Sweet and his late wife, Neoma Lindhart Sweet, were founding members of Grace United Methodist Church and until his health didn’t permit, was known for selling tickets and cooking bar-b-que for their fund raisers. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Neoma, a brother, Jim Sweet and a sister, Lucille Campbell.

Mr. Sweet is survived by a son, Kevin Sweet and wife, Kim of Hertford, NC and their daughter, Kaitlyn and Kevin’s son, Bryon, of Elizabeth City, a daughter, Kim Bethune and husband, Horace, of Raleigh. Also surviving are three sisters, Ruth Ness, Martha Sweet and Evelyn Sweet all of Spencer, Iowa; two brothers, Bill Sweet of Spencer, Iowa and Leonard Sweet of Arnold’s Park, Iowa and a host of nieces and nephews in Iowa.

Graveside services will be conducted Tuesday, April 13, 2004, at ll:00am in the West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery by Revs. Alan Gibson and William Holmes. The family will receive friends and relatives at Twiford Funeral Home, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, NC Monday evening from 7:00 until 8:30pm and at other times at the home of his son, 262 Body Road, Hertford, NC.

Ella Swindell

Powells Point, NC - Ella Keech Swindell, age 90, died peacefully, Wednesday, December 10, 2003 at the home of her granddaughter, Pennie S. Burke in Powells Point, NC. She was the daughter of the late Bryan Keech and Mary Etta Wallace Keech. She was also predeceased by two sisters and four brothers. Originally from Belhaven, NC, she lived in Elizabeth City, NC, and the last few years with her daughter and son in law in Chesapeake, VA. She was a volunteer for Albemarle Hospital and the American Red Cross. She was a member of Living Waters Christian Fellowship Church in Chesapeake, VA, and New Life Assembly of God Church in Elizabeth City, NC.

Survivors include one son Alvis Swindell and wife Kathy of Greenville, NC; one daughter Linda Massengill and husband Charles of Chesapeake, VA; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren, and a step great-granddaughter; a sister in law and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be Saturday, December 13, 2003, at 1:00 PM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC with the Rev. Clay Manos officiating. Burial will follow in New Hollywood Cemetery, Elizabeth City, NC. The family will receive friends Friday evening 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM at the funeral home, and will assemble at the funeral home Saturday afternoon. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Joseph Sykes

Grandy, NC - Joseph Peter Sykes, age 61, of 119 Edgewater Drive, Grandy, NC died Monday, August 11, 2003, at his residence. He was born in Delaware County, PA; son of the late Joseph Peter and Veronica Marie Bennett Sykes.

Mr. Sykes is survived by a daughter, Christine Marie Wissman and son in law, Bo, of Grandy, NC; a son, Brian Joseph Sykes of Point Harbor, NC; a granddaughter, Emily Wissman of Grandy, NC; two sisters, Bernadette Sykes of Washington, DC and Anne Marie Sykes of London, England; a brother, Leo Joseph Sykes of Clifton, PA; a niece, Maura Sykes-Brennan; and a nephew, Daniel Hogg.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, August 14, 2003, at 2:00 PM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, NC.

Margaret Spiers

KITTY HAWK, N.C. - MARGARET LASSITER SPIERS, 69, of Kitty Hawk, died, Friday, May 7, 2004 in Nags Head. Mrs. Spiers was born in Norfolk, Va and worked in hotel management.

She was the daughter of the late Jesse Perry and Ruth Billups Lassiter.

Surviving are two sons; Timothy Spiers of Bridgewater, Va and Rick Spiers of McGaheysville, Va, one brother; Bill Lassiter of Statesboro, Ga and five grandchildren.

Arrangements are pending with Twiford Colony Chapel Manteo assisting the Spiers family.

John Grady Spivey
Resident of Whiteville, NC

Mr. John Grady Spivey, 88, of Whiteville, NC and formerly of Raleigh, NC, died Friday, March 5, 2004 at Liberty Commons Nursing Home in Wilmington, NC. Mr. Spivey was born in Whiteville, NC, and lived in Hertford, NC, as a child. He was a Highway Patrolman and served in the Navy during WWII as part of the Shore Patrol. After the war he owned a meat business in Washington, NC. Mr. Spivey lived in Raleigh, NC and worked with Reserve Life Insurance Co., and has been retired there for the last 27 years. Mr. Spivey was preceded in death by his wife, Judith Lane Spivey who died April 15, 2003.

He is survived by one daughter, Linda Shelburne and her husband Edward M. Shelburne of Whiteville, NC; three grandchildren, Brian, Ashley and Laura; one brother, Richard Spivey.

A memorial service will be held at First United Methodist Church in Elizabeth City, NC, on March 20, 2004 at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church Building Fund, PO Box 181, Elizabeth City, NC 27907-0181, or to the Pasquotank Camden Library, 204 E. Harry LeRoy Spruill

Elizabeth City, NC - Harry Leroy Spruill, age 89, of 721 Parsonage St., Elizabeth City, NC died Monday, March 17, 2003 at Albemarle Hospital. He was born in Pasquotank Co., NC; son of the late Richard and Lucy Smith Spruill and was the husband of Addie White Spruill of the residence. He retired from the Elizabeth City Cotton Mill as a machinist.

Besides his wife, Mr. Spruill is survived by three sons, Mickey Spruill and his wife, Margit, and David Anthony “Tony” Spruill, and his wife, Helga, all of Edenton, NC and Charles Edward Spruill, Sr. and his wife, Denise, of Weeksville, NC; a sister, Nina Spruill of Hertford, NC; eleven grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.

A graveside service will be conducted on Wednesday, March 19, 2003, 2:00 PM at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will be at the residence.

Naomi Morse Spruill
Elizabeth City native

Naomi Elizabeth Morse Spruill, age 68, formerly of Elizabeth City died Thursday, April 3, 2003, at NC Special Care Center, Wilson, NC. Mrs. Spruill, a native of Pasquotank County, was the daughter of the late William E. Morse and Rebecca Tadlock Morse. She had worked at the Elizabeth City Cotton Mill and was a Pentecostal Holiness.

Mrs. Spruill is survived by three sons, Ricky Smithson and Cecil Smithson both of Camden, NC, and Richard Spruill of Elizabeth City, NC. She was predeceased by two sisters, Marie Webb, and Willie Mae Rogerson.

A graveside service will be Saturday, April 5, 2003, at 3:00 PM in New Hollywood Cemetery with the Rev. Dale Forbes officiating. The family will receive friends Saturday at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel from 1:00 to 2:30 PM and at other times at the residence of the son, Mr. & Mrs. Richard Spruill, 115 Burlington Drive, Elizabeth City, NC.

Lillian Josselyn Spruill

Elizabeth City, NC - Lillian Josselyn Spruill, of 116 Beechtree Drive, Shiloh, NC, died Friday, July 18, 2003 in Carolina House Retirement Home. She was born in Fall River, MA, daughter of the late Elmer and Mary Curran Josselyn, and was the wife of the late Milton Lester Spruill, Jr.

Mrs. Spruill is survived by three daughters, Ruth Ann Burgess of Shiloh, NC, Lillian Mae Warden of Camden, NC, and Mary Catherine Reynolds of Elizabeth City, NC; one son Russell E. Rupert, Jr. of Shiloh, NC; three sisters, Ruth North of Camden, NC, Ann Wills and Mae Baltitas both of Madison, OH; three grandchildren.

A graveside service will be Monday, July 21, 2003 in New Hollywood Cemetery at 11:00 AM with Father Jim Buchholz officiating. The family will receive friends at Twiford Funeral Home, 405 E. Church St. Sunday evening from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

ADDIE WHITE SPRUILL
Resident of Elizabeth City, NC

Addie White Spruill, age 83, of 721 Parsonage Street, Elizabeth City, NC, died Tuesday, August 5, 2003, at her residence. She was born in Chowan County, NC, daughter of the late Charlie and Bessie Wright White, and was the widow of Harry L. Spruill. She was retired from the Elizabeth City Cotton Mill as a spinner and was a member of the First Christian Church.

Mrs. Spruill is survived by three sons, Mickey Spruill and wife, Margit, of Edenton, NC, and Tony Spruill and wife, Helga, of Edenton, NC, and Charles Spruill and wife, Denise, of Weeksville, NC; five sisters, Helen Hewitt, Lib Midgett, Zaner Crain all of Elizabeth City, NC, Dixie Lacy and Bonnie West both of Chesapeake, VA; one brother, Danny White of Chesapeake, VA; eleven grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, August 9, 2003, at 2:00pm in the First Christian Church by Rev. Dr. Glenn Brigman. Burial will follow in the West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will be at her residence, 721 Parsonage St., Elizabeth City, NC. Twiford Funeral Home. 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, NC is in charge of arrangements.

Thelma Spruill

Thelma Sykes Spruill, 80, of 1118 Four Forks Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died Thursday afternoon July 29, 2004, at the home of her son and daughter in law, Carl and Judy Spruill.

Mrs. Spruill was born May 6, 1924, in Martin County, NC, and was the daughter of the late Joseph Payton and Ella Isolind Biggs Sykes. She was preceded in death by her husband Haywood Spruill, Sr. Mrs Spruill was a former sales clerk and Department Manager with W.T. Grants and Rose’s Department Stores, and a member of the Forest Park Church of God.

Survivors include her daughter Thelma S. Childers and her husband Clyde of Charlotte, NC, and three sons Dick Spruill and wife Barbara, Carl Spruill and wife Judy all of Elizabeth City, NC and Haywood Spruill, Jr., of Winter Haven, Florida, seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held Sunday August 1, 2004, at 3:00 P. M. in the Twiford Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street Elizabeth City, NC, with Mitchell Edwards and Scott Neal officiating. Burial will follow in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

The family will join friends Saturday July 31, 2004 from 7:00 P. M. to 8:00 P.M. at Twiford Funeral Home and following the service in the funeral home parlor, and other times at 1118 Four Forks Road.

Nina Spruill

Elizabeth City, NC - Nina Elizabeth Spruill, age 80, formerly of Elizabeth City, NC, died Monday, September 13, 2004, in Brian Center Nursing Home, Hertford, NC. She was a native of Elizabeth City, NC, and was the daughter of the late Richard Edward Spruill and Lucy Smith Spruill. She worked as a seamstress with Supak and Sons Clothing Factory.

Mrs. Spruill is survived by one daughter, Donnie Wall Moore and her husband Kenneth of Kill Devil Hills, NC; one son, Larry Wall and his wife Celia of Hamilton, VA; four grandchildren, Candice Moore Ambrose, Kenneth Moore, Jr., Tara Wall, and Albert Wall; two great grandchildren, Ann Marie Ambrose and Jessie McCoy Ambrose. She was predeceased by two sisters, Elenore Temple, and Edna S. Spruill, and one brother, Harry Spruill.

A graveside service will be Thursday, September 16, 2004, at 1:00 PM in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Haywood Gillikin officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC is in charge of arrangements.

Edith Banks

Currituck, NC - Edith Robertson Banks, age 56, of 116 Bells Island Road, Currituck, NC, died August 1, 2004. She was a native of Nashville, TN. She was the daughter of the late Joseph Leisure Robertson and Adlene Waterfield Hampton of Aydlette, NC, and was the wife of the late George Haywood Banks.

Besides her mother she is survived by two daughters, Kim Banks McDaniel and her husband Mark of Hertford, NC, and Renee B. Owens and her husband Joey of Grandy, NC; one son Clarence “Pee Wee” Richardson of Coinjock, NC; one brother, Joseph Robertson of Barco, NC; two grandsons, Mark McDaniel of Hertford, NC, and Joey Owens of Grandy, NC; one granddaughter, Amber White and her husband Timothy D. White, Jr. of Hertford, NC.

A graveside service will be Friday, August 6, 2004, at 2:00 PM in the Hampton Cemetery, Waterlily, NC, with David Sawyer officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Thursday evening in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel. At other times the family will be at the residence, 116 Bells Island Road, Currituck, NC. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Milton Lester Spruill, Jr.

Shiloh, NC - Milton Lester Spruill, Jr., age 70, of 116 Beechtree Drive, Shiloh, NC, died Thursday, November 14, 2002 in Lexington Medical Center, West Columbia, SC. He was born in Pasquotank County, NC, son of the late Milton Lester Spruill, Sr., and the late Elizabeth Cartwright Spruill and was the husband of Lillian Josselyn Spruill of the residence. Mr. Spruill was a retired civil service worker for the United States Coast Guard (ARSC). He also served in the United States Air Force, and was a member and Past Master of the Masonic Hall Lodge #53 AF & AM. He was a Methodist.

Besides his wife Mr. Spruill is survived by three daughters; Ruth Ann Burgess of Shiloh, NC, Lillian Mae Warden of Camden, NC, and Mary Catherine Reynolds of Lexington, SC; one son, Russell E. Rupert, Jr. of Shiloh, NC; and three grandchildren.

A funeral service will held on Saturday, November 16, 2002 in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel at 3:00 PM. Burial will follow in New Hollywood Cemetery with Masonic Rites. The family will receives friends and relatives at the funeral home Friday evening from 7:00pm to 8:30pm. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Elsie Sawyer Mercer

Camden, NC - Elsie Sawyer Mercer, 83, of 125 Shipyard Rd., Camden, NC, died Friday, March 07, 2003 at Albemarle Hospital. She was born in Camden County, NC to the late Carl and Lena Williams Sawyer and was a salesperson with F. W. Woolworth’s and Chessons and a Baptist.

She is survived by a daughter, Rose M. Harris of Camden, NC and a grandson, Steve Harris and wife Gloria of Roper, NC.

A memorial service will be conducted on Monday, March 10, 2003 at 2:00 PM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel by the Rev. F. Joe Griffith. The family will receive friends at the funeral home immediately following the service and at other times at the residence of Rose Harris, 125 Shipyard Road, Camden, NC. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the SPCA of Northeastern North Carolina, P. O. Box 1772, Elizabeth City, NC 27909.

KENNETH F. STABELL
Pearl Harbor Survivor

Kenneth F. Stabell, 80, of 706 Morgan Street, Elizabeth City died Monday, July 28, 2003, in the Guardian Care Nursing Home. He was born in Norwalk, Ct. to the late Arthur Frederick and Sarah Matilda Carlson Stabell. Mr. Stabell was a retired plumber, a US Army veteran having served in the Pacific Theater during World War II and was a survivor of the Japanese’s attack on Pearl Harbor. He was a member of the Pipe Fitters’ Union.

He is survived by his wife, Georgia Tuttle Stabell; three daughters, Sarah Beth Stabell Velez of Waterbury, Ct., Ruth-Ellen Georgette Stabell Wilson of Elizabeth City, and Laura Louise Stabell of Ridgefield, Ct.; two step-sons, Terry Leigh Britton of Winston-Salem, NC and Thomas Paul Britton of Naughtuck, Ct. He is also survived by eleven grandchildren.

The body has been cremated and a memorial service will be held at a later date in the Riverside Memorial Cemetery in Norwalk, Ct. Twiford Funeral Home, 405 E. Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC is in charge of local arrangements.

Margarette Iona Turner Banks
Native of Pasquotank Co., NC

Margarette Iona Turner Banks, age 86, of 433 S. Hughes Blvd., Elizabeth City, NC, died Monday, May 10, 2004, in the Albemarle Hospital. She was a native of Pasquotank County, NC. She was daughter of the late Alfred L. Turner and Mae Davis Turner, and wife of the late James C. Banks, and a member of Berea Baptist Church.

She is survived by one daughter, Esther B. Temple and her husband, Kenyon of SouthPort, NC; one son, James A. Banks and his wife Kay of South Mills, NC; two grandchildren Amy C. Banks of South Mills, NC, and Jason A. Banks of Richmond, VA. Mrs. Banks was predeceased by two sisters, Hazel T. Whitehurst and Elizabeth T. Jackson.

Funeral services will be Thursday, May 13, 2004 at 3:00 PM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC, with Rev Glenn Greenway and David Rhodes officiating. Burial will be in New Hollywood Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the lobby of the funeral home following the service. At other times the family will be at the home of James and Kay Banks, 1153 N. Highway 343, South Mills, NC. Memorial donations may be made to Berea Baptist Church Building Fund, 2033 N. Road Street, Elizabeth City, NC 27909 Twiford’s Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
