Marshall William Stallings
Elizabeth City native

Marshall William Stallings, age 84, of 324 Woodstock Apartments III, Elizabeth City, NC, died Wednesday, March 26, 2003, at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital. Mr. Stallings, a native of Elizabeth City, NC, was the husband of Zealer Marie Williams Stallings of the residence and the son of the late Bill and Essie Stallings. He was retired from the Virginia Depart of Highways and the Elizabeth City Cotton Mill and was a member of Corinth Baptist Church.

Besides his wife he is survived by a daughter, Juanita Livers of Lynnville, IN; two step-daughters, Brenda Eason and Barbara Taylor both of Elizabeth City, NC; two sisters, Ruth Klund and Margaret Gibbs both of Tacoma, WA; and four grandchildren.

A funeral service will be Friday, March 28, 2003, at 2:00 PM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Steve Strickland officiating. Burial will be in New Hollywood Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday from 12:30 until the funeral time at the funeral home and at other times at the residence.

Janet Weeks Stallings
Elizabeth City, NC

Janet Weeks Stallings, age 59, of 395 Fire Tower Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died Thursday, April 10, 2003 in Pitt Memorial Hospital. She was born in Pasquotank County, NC, the daughter of the late Paul Baxter and Mildred Elizabeth Eason Weeks and the wife of Walter Ben Stallings of the residence. She was a member of Newland United Methodist Church, Newland United Methodist Women, and the Newland Ruritan Club. She taught Sunday School, sang in the church choir, was the church secretary, and worked at Sawyer’s Garage.

Besides her husband she is survived by three daughters, Pat Stallings and Pam Stallings both of the residence, and Sherri Whitehurst and husband Hersey of Elizabeth City, NC; a son, Ken Stallings and wife Debbie of Shiloh, NC; three sisters, Kaye W. Ventura, Debbie W. Woodley and husband Tom, and Paula W. Banks and husband Doug, all of Elizabeth City, NC; four brothers, Wayne Weeks and wife Kay of Elizabeth City, NC, Dudley Weeks and wife Jean of Elizabeth City, NC, Larry Weeks of Tybee Island, GA, and Kevin Weeks and wife Robin of Elizabeth City, NC; three grandchildren, Tiffany Morris, Pam Ross and Andrea Ross. She was preceded in death by a sister, Lydia Weeks Bright.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, April 12, 2003 at 2:00 pm in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, with Rev. Alan Gibson officiating and Rev. Toni Wood assisting. Burial will follow in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will be at the residence.

EMMETT TIMOTHY STALLINGS
Resident of Hertford, NC

Emmett Timothy Stallings, 93, of 652 Chapanoke Road, Hertford, NC died Monday, November 10, 2003, in the Albemarle Hospital. He was born in Portsmouth, VA to the late Edward Parker and Mary Elizabeth Layden Stallings and was the widower of the late Geraldine Griffin Stallings. Mr. Stallings retired from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, a member of the Oak Grove United Methodist Church and the Perquimans County Masonic Lodge #106 AF & AM.

He is survived by a son, Ronnie Stallings and wife, Kay, of Hertford, NC; one grandchild and three great grandchildren.

Graveside services will be conducted Thursday, November 13, 2003, at 2:00 PM in the Highland Park Cemetery, Elizabeth City by Rev. Dustin Sprouse with Masonic rites to follow by Perquimans Masonic Lodge #106 AF & AM. Twiford Funeral Home, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, NC is in charge of funeral arrangements. Pearl Stallings

Elizabeth City, NC - Pearl Neppie Stallings, age 88, of Elizabeth City, NC, died Tuesday, January 20, 2004, in Guardian Care Nursing Home. She was born in Perquimans County, NC, daughter of the late Eley W. Stallings and Bessie Lane Stallings, and was a member of Woodville Baptist Church. She is survived by one sister, Essie Overton of Elizabeth City, NC.

A funeral service will be Thursday, January 22, 2004, at 10:00 AM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Oliver Cartwright officiating. Burial will be in New Hollywood Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the lobby of the funeral home immediately following the service, and at other times of the home of Essie Overton, 660 Old Hertford Hwy. Elizabeth City, NC.

Robert E. Stallings
Native of Perquimans County

Robert Eugene Stallings, age 70, of 766 Bayside Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died Friday, March 5, 2004, at his residence. Mr. Stallings, a native of Perquimans County, NC, was the husband of Marie Stolz Stallings of the residence and the son of the late Ervin Parker Stallings and Thelma Hall Stallings. He was a member and deacon of Maranatha Baptist Mission and attended Riverside Baptist Church, and the Disable Veterans of America having held the office of 3rd and 2nd Vice Commander. He was a veteran of the U. S. Air Force.

Besides his wife he is survived by a daughter, Diana Marie Stallings of Elizabeth City, NC; three sons, Bruce Stallings, and wife Lisa, of Woodville, NC, Jack Stallings and Donald “Bubba” Stallings, and wife Renee, all of Elizabeth City, NC; one brother, William Ervin Stallings, and wife Margaret Sue, of Elizabeth City, NC; six grand children; and two nieces.

A graveside funeral service will be Monday, March 8, 2004, at 2:00 PM at West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. John B. Jones and the Rev. Glenn Greenway officiating. Full military honors will be rendered by the William Clarence Jackson VFW Post #6060. The family will receive friends Sunday from 7:00 to 8:30 PM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC, and at other times at the residence.

Stan E. Taylor
London, England native

Stan E. Taylor, age 78, of 109 Sunny Lane, Grandy, NC, died Tuesday, June 24, 2003, at his residence. Mr. Taylor, a native of London, England, was the husband of Dorothy Joan Walker Taylor of the residence and the son of the late Walter Taylor and Anne Brown Taylor. He was a British Army Veteran of WW II, a retired Corporate Executive and an Episcopal.

Besides his wife he is survived by a daughter, Sue Ward of Mission Viejo, CA; two sons, David Taylor of West Palm Beach, FL, and Peter Taylor of Jarvisburg, NC; two sisters, Ros Warland of Banbury, England, and Connie Dieser of Rochester, MN; three grand children and his loving Foster family of the Spencers and Francis, where he was raised in Feltwell, England.

A funeral service will be conducted on Monday, June 30, 2003 at 2:00 PM in the Powells Point Christian Church, Harbinger with Walter Gallop officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the fellowship hall of the church and at other times at the residence. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made The Caring House at Duke University, 2625 Pickett Rd., Durham, NC 27705 or the Lower Currituck County Rescue Squad, 6323 Caratoke Highway, Grandy, NC 27939.

James W. Ballance, Sr.

James Wilson Ballance, Sr., age 68 of 1177 Lynch’s Corner Rd., Elizabeth City, NC died Thursday, June 5, 2003 at his residence. He was born in Pasquotank Co., NC; son of the late Grady Wilson and Sally Ann Parker Ballance and was the husband of Marjorie Lacy Ballance of the residence. He was a member of Ramoth Gilead Baptist Church and was a retired carpenter.

Mr. Ballance is survived by three daughters, Brenda Inge of Chesapeake, VA, and Lisa Key and Melinda Ford, both of Elizabeth City, NC; a son, James “Buddy” Ballance, Jr. of Elizabeth City, NC; two sisters, Mildred O’Neal of Williamsburg, VA and Mary Spruill of Elizabeth City, NC; three brothers, Jimmy Ballance and Leonard Ballance, both of Elizabeth City, NC and Preston Ballance of Chesapeake, VA; six grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He was predeceased by two sisters, Doris Sawyer and Estelle Smith.

A graveside service will be conducted on Monday, June 9 at 11:00 AM in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery with Rev. David Benton officiating. The family will receive friends at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, NC on Sunday evening from 7:00 until 8:30 PM and at other times at the residence of his son, Mr. and Mrs. James Ballance, Jr. 1225 Lynch’s Corner Rd., Elizabeth City, NC .

John Stanley

Colington Harbour - John Victor Stanley, Jr., 59, died on Thursday, August 5, 2004 at his residence. Mr. Stanley was born in New Bern, NC and worked with Sprint in repair and installation. He was an amateur (ham) radio operator, KE4KFY, a member of the Outer Banks Worship Center, and a wonderful family man. Mr. Stanley was a veteran having served in the U.S. Navy. He was the son of John Victor Stanley, Sr. of Kinston and the late Lizzie Morton Stanley and the husband of Alfreda Buckner Stanley of the home.

Besides his father and wife, he is survived by two daughters, Lisa Michelle Latham of Colington and Melissa Dawn Garza of New Bern; one brother, James E. Stanley of Clayton and seven grandchildren; his step-mother, Margie Stanley of Kinston; he was preceded in death by one sister, Magdalene Stanley.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Outer Banks Worship Center on Monday, August 9, 2004 at 10:00 A.M. with Rev. James Lewis officiating. Burial will take place in the New Bern Memorial Cemetery at 3:30 P.M. The family will receive friends at Twiford’s Colony Chapel, Manteo, on Sunday, August 8th from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

Ruby Midgett

MANTEO, NC - RUBY STORY MIDGETT, of Manteo, NC passed away on Sunday, October 5, 2003 at her residence. Mrs. Midgett was born in Brunswick, GA. She and her husband of 49 years, Chesley C. “Buddy” Midgett, Jr. owned and operated Food-a-Rama in Chesley Mall, Manteo and Kitty Hawk Plaza. She was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church, Wanchese and was a former Choir member. She was the daughter of the late Ed and Martha McCullen Story and was also preceded in death by a son, Eugene Midgett.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Midgett is survived by two daughters, Jackie Parker of Wanchese, NC and Patty Midgett of Palm Bay, FL; one son, Don Royals of Savannah, GA; two sisters, Bet Davis and Pansy Corlett both of Brunswick, GA; one brother, Seaborn Story, also of Brunswick, GA; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at Bethany United Methodist Church, Wanchese, NC on Thursday, October 9, 2003 at 2:00 pm. Burial will follow in Cudworth Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Twiford’s Funeral Home, Manteo on Wednesday evening from 7:00 to 8:30 pm.

Virginia Clark Staples

Moyock, NC - Virginia Clark Staples, age 72, of 105 Spur Trail, Moyock, NC, died Tuesday, March 4, 2003, at Chesapeake General Hospital. Mrs. Staples was born in Newport News Virginia on April 30, 1930. She was the daughter of the late Annie Lee Neal Baker Clark and Louis Edward Clark and was the wife of the late Vance Lee Staples. She was a member of the Come As You Are Ministries of Moyock, NC.

Mrs. Staples is survived by a son, Richard Staples of Moyock, NC and a sister Naomi Clark Cooper of Orange Park, Fl.

Memorial services will be held on Wednesday March 12, 2003 at 11:00 o’clock in the Moyock Assembly of God Church by Scott Pollard and Wayne Sawyer. Memorial donations may be made to ones favorite charity and the family will be receiveing friends at the residence.

Florence Lee Staples

CHESAPEAKE - FLORENCE LEE STAPLES, 80, went home to be with her Lord on Monday, July 7, 2003. Born Jan. 21, 1923, in Fork Union, VA., she was the beloved daughter of William Richard “Bill Dick” Pettit and Rosa Compton Norvell Pettit. Florence Lee was a graduate of Farmville College and especially proud of her service in the Marine Corps, which brought her to the Hampton Roads area. Mrs. Staples was a loving mother of 5 children, who was blessed with 7 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. She will be welcomed home by her son Jackie Moye, her parents, her husband Leo Royce Staples, her sister Mary Anne Foster and countless other loved ones that have gone on before.

Surviving are her brother, William Richard Pettit Jr; her loving daughters, Judith Moye Burns of Chesapeake, Patricia Moye Gowen of Eugene, OR, Deborah Moye Bradshaw and Royce Staples Macken both of Chesapeake; her dearly loved grandchildren, Richard E. Burns of FL, Dani Lee Farmer of NC, Richard Scott Macken Jr. of Chesapeake, Ian Richard, Margaret Ann and Ryan Mathew Gowen all of OR, Kathryn Lee Macken of Chesapeake; her dearly loved great-grandchildren, Ryan Daniel Farmer of NC and Richard James Burns and Jacqueline Paige Burns of FL; her loving nephews, Edward Foster of MS, and John Foster of VA, alongside their wives and lovely children and a host of family and friends.

“Lee’s” body will be laid to rest at the Charity United Methodist Church Cemetery. Pastor Walter A. Whitehurst will preside over the graveside service on Thursday at 12:30 pm. The family welcomes all those desiring to bid a fond farewell to join the family at Twiford’s Colonial Chapel, Chesapeake on Thursday at 10:00am for a time of remembrance.

LUCINDA RIGGS STAPLES
Native of Camden County, NC

Lucinda Riggs Staples, 95, of W. Ehringhaus St., Elizabeth City died Tuesday, August 17, 2004, in the Albemarle Hospital. She was born in Camden County, NC to the late Peter and Lucinda Sawyer Riggs and was the widow of the late Tommie Staples. Mrs. Staples was a member of the Geneva Baptist Church.

She is survived by four daughters, Bessie Winslow and husband, Otho, of Elizabeth City, Odell Watkins and husband, J. W., of Camden, NC, Shirley Lane and husband, Willis, of Mannassa, VA and Barbara Ann Blair of Indiana; a son, William Staples and wife, Tennie, of Camden; a daughter-in-law, Earline Staples of Ahoskie, NC fifteen grandchildren, Loretta Smith, Jerry Watkins, Willis Ray Lane, Lisa Kirk, Jeff Lane, Wayne Jones, Kim Fightmaster, Mike Winslow, Joey Rogier, Cindy Rogier, Brenda Nash, Linda Eason, Susie Vincent, Janet Worthington, Mary Chambers, and several great grandchildren. Besides her husband and parents, Mrs. Staples was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Staples, a son, Tommie Staples, Jr., three grandchildren, Rita Watkins, Billy Staples and Deborah Coppersmith; six sisters and two brothers.

Funeral services will be conducted Friday, August 20, 2004, at 2:00 PM in the Geneva Baptist Church, by Rev. Roland Cooper. Burial will be in the Allen Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends and relatives in the church social hall immediately following the church service and at other times at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Watkins, 462 North #343, Camden, NC. Twiford Funeral Home, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City is assisting the Staples family.

Charlotte Starner

MANTEO, N.C. - CHARLOTTE DAVIS STARNER, 92, of Manteo, died, Thursday, December 25, 2003, in Nags Head. Mrs. Starner was born in Westminster, Maryland and was a retired grocer and Christian Scientist.

She was the daughter of the late Harry and Gertrude Hunter Davis and the wife of the late Calvin David Starner.

Surviving are one daughter; Patricia Fulk of Manteo, one son: Eugene David Starner of West Virginia, five grandchildren; Allen Starner, John Starner, David Starner, James Starner and Catherine Glass.

A service of remembrance will be held Saturday, January 3, 2004, at 3:30 p.m. in Twiford’s Colony Chapel. Twiford Funeral Home Manteo is assisting the Starner family.

Elva Cahoon Cartwright

Elizabeth City, NC - Elva Cahoon Cartwright, age 90 of 1303 Preyer St., Elizabeth City, NC died Monday, March 24, 2003 at her residence. She was born in Hyde Co., NC; daughter of the late Carroll and Armeta Jarvis Cahoon and was the widow of Elwyn Cartwright. She was a retired auditor for Sears, Roebuck, and Company, a member of the Englehard Disciple of Christ Church, a lifetime member of O.E.S, Hyde County Chapter # 213, and the Marcie Albertson Home Demonstration Club.

Mrs. Cartwright is survived a daughter, Cecilia C. “Ceci” Austin of Elizabeth City, NC; two sisters, Mary C. Kelly of San Diego, CA and Lois C. Midgett of Chesapeake, VA; three grandchildren and two great grandchildren. She was predeceased by three brothers, Carroll Ephron Cahoon, Crawford L. Cahoon, and James Lawson Cahoon.

A funeral service will be conducted on Thursday, March 27, 2003 at 2:00 PM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, NC. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday evening from 7:00 until 8:30 PM and immediately following the service on Thursday and at other times, at the residence.

Jeffrey Langwell
Automobile Salesman

Jeffrey Alan Langwell, age 45, of 103 Pine Street, Camden, NC, died Monday, May 19, 2003, at the Albemarle Hospital. Mr. Langwell, a native of San Antonio, TX, was the husband of Vickie Barber Langwell of the residence and the son of the late August Langwell, III, and Joanna Gravitt Langwell Yeager of College Station, TX. He was an automobile salesman, a US Navy veteran, and a Catholic.

Besides his wife and mother he is survived by a daughter, Lauren Langwell of the residence; a son, Paul Langwell of the residence; a sister, Paula Schultu of Huston, TX; a brother, Mark Langwell of College Station, TX; and stepmother, Jo Langwell of Garland, TX.

A funeral service will be Friday, May 23, 2003, at 2:30 PM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Glenn Greenway and the Rev. Tom Lagrane officiating. Military honors will be rendered by the William Clarence Jackson VFW Post 6060 and burial will follow in New Hollywood Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home at 1:00 PM Friday and immediately after the service in the lobby. At other times they will be at the residence.

Earl Steger

Frisco, NC - Earl Linwood Steger, 78, died Monday, June 28, 2004 at Albemarle Hospital in Elizabeth City. Mr. Steger was born in Norfolk, VA and was a Captain on several charter boats. He was a member of the Lafayette Presbyterian Church in Norfolk, He was a Past Master in the Cape Hatteras Masonic Lodge, he was also a member of the York Rites and the Scottish Rites and was a Shriner. He was a Veteran having served in the U.S. Navy for 31 years as a Warrant Officer during WWII, Korean, War and Vietnam War. He received the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, the Korean Service Medal, the Victory Medal with Accommodation Ribbons, the American Area Campaign Medal during WWII and the Navy Occupational Medal. He was the son of the late James E. Steger and the late Ethel Gregory Steger and the husband of Zola Jenkins Steger of the home.

Besides his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Patricia and her husband Joseph Grumm of Hampstead, NC; three sons, Gary and his wife Dhanyo Bowers of Buxton, Don and his wife Anne of Frisco and Andy and his wife Stephanie Bowers of Avon; two brothers, Robert and his wife Gwen Steger of Swansboro, NC and John and his wife Beverly Steger of Prattville, AL; four grandchildren, Patricia and her husband Steve Smith, Canaan and his wife Jonda Merillat, Cain and Corbin Bowers; three great-grandchildren, Cassidy, Cailin and Shelby.

A celebration of life will be held at Little Grove United Methodist Church on Friday, July 2, 2004 at 10:00 AM with Rev. Charles Moseley officiating. Burial will take place at Riverside Cemetery in Norfolk on Friday, July 2, 2004 at 3:00 PM with full military honors. A Visitation will be held at the Little Grove United Methodist Church on Thursday, July 1, 2004 from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM.

JAMES KENNETH CAMPBELL
Native of Pasquotank County, NC

James Kenneth Campbell, 61, of Elizabeth City, NC, died Tuesday, January 20, 2004, in the Albemarle Hospital. He was born in Pasquotank County, NC to Cynthia Ballaro Campbell of Ocala, FL and the late Robert Frank Campbell. He was a general contractor and a veteran of the US Air Force.

Besides his mother, he is survived by three daughters, Shea Berry Bundy, Brandy Johnston, and Tammy Campbell all of Elizabeth City; three sons, Kenneth Campbell, Benjamin Campbell both of Elizabeth City and Shane Campbell of Nags Head, NC; one sister, Cynthia Corbett of Rocky Mount, NC; three brothers Alan Campbell of Wilmington, NC, Bobby Campbell of Ocala, FL and Joe Campbell of Anchorage, Alaska. He was preceded in death by a brother, Ronnie Campbell.

A memorial service will be conducted Friday, January 23, 2004, at 10:00am in Christ Episcopal Church. The family will be at 500 Maple Street. The family suggests that memorial gifts please be made to the American Cancer Society for cancer research % Hazel Anderson, 106 S. Ashe Street, Elizabeth City, NC 27909. Brooks Stetson

WANCHESE, NC - BROOKS DANIELS STETSON, 82, of Wanchese, NC died Thursday, August 28, 2003 at her residence. Mrs. Stetson was born in Wanchese and was an Ordained Minister with the Assemblies of God. She was a “Highway and Hedges” minister and was a supply pastor for many churches in the area including Manteo, Poplar Branch, Englehard, Colington, Columbia and Manns Harbor, etc. She was a former Women’s Ministries leader at Wanchese Assembly and a former Sunday School teacher. She was the daughter of the late Paul and Dola Tillett Daniels and the widow of the late L. W. Stetson, Jr. She was also preceded in death by a son, Carey Worth Stetson, and two sisters, Wanda Daniels and Bertie Daniels.

Mrs. Stetson is survived by a daughter, Paulette S. Nall and husband, Harold of Gibsonville, NC; a son, Charles Wesley Stetson and wife, Kim of Wanchese, NC; a sister, Wanda Daniels Cox and husband, Bill of Manteo, NC; a brother, Timer Daniels and wife, Mickey of Wanchese, NC; five grandchildren, Ruth Jane Stetson, Stephen Samuel Stetson, Cass Nall, Ladd Nall and wife, Beth and Danae Nall; two great-grandchildren, Erin Dickerson and Kylie Nall.

A Celebration of Sister Brookie’s life will be held at Wanchese Assembly of God on Sunday, August 31, 2003 at 3:00 pm with Rev. David Dalton, Rev. James Kelly, Rev. Charles Cookman and Rev. David Daniels officiating. Burial will follow in the Cudworth Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Twiford Funeral Home on Saturday evening from 5:00 to 8:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Brooks Stetson Project Fund, c/o Wanchese Assembly of God, POB 201, Wanchese, NC 27981, or to Dare County Hospice, POB 1000, Manteo, NC 27954.

Retired US Navy

Oscar Paul Barrs, age 50, of 117 Cherry Street, Moyock, NC, died Friday, July 4, 2003, at his residence. Mr. Barrs, a native of Tallahassee, FL, was the husband of Patricia Hope Beichert Barrs of the residence and the son of the late Homer Tasso Barrs and Mary Charlotte Brown Barrs. He was retired from the US Navy as a machinist mate.

Besides his wife, he is survived by three sons, Christopher Daniel Beickert of Coinjock, NC, Eric Holden Barrs and Kyle Thomas Barrs both of the residence; a sister, Mary Sue Thomas of Orlando, FL; and two brothers, Clarence Homer Barrs of San Diego, CA, and James William Barrs of Tallahassee, FL; and two grandchildren.

A memorial service will be Wednesday, July 9, 2003 at 2:00 PM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Scott Pollard officiating and military honors will be rendered by the William Clarence Jackson VFW Post 6060. The family will receive friends at the residence of Mr. & Mrs. Marvin Beickert, 114 Walnut Drive, Moyock, NC.

Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC, is in charge of arrangements.
