Gladys Spencer

Gladys Mae Johnson Spencer, age 78, of 376 Country Club Road, Camden, NC, died Saturday, December 27, 2003, at her residence. Mrs. Spencer, a native of Angier, NC, was the widow of Herbert Dewey Spencer, Sr., and the daughter of the late Benjamin Franklin Johnson and Alva Emily Mathews Johnson. She was a homemaker, a member of Providence Baptist Church, the Shawboro Home Extension Club, and a volunteer for the Albemarle Hospital.

Mrs. Spencer is survived by three daughters, Emily Spencer Howington and husband Roger, Belinda Spencer, and husband Steven, and Donna McElroy, and husband Mark, all of Camden, NC; a son, Herbert D. Spencer, Jr., and wife JoAnn, of Southern Shores, NC; a sister, Edith Sines of Portsmouth, VA; eleven grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be Tuesday, December 30, 2003, at 11:00 AM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC, with the Rev. Lee Porter and the Rev. Charles Stevenson officiating. Burial will be in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the lobby of the funeral home immediately after the service and at other times at the residence of the daughter, Mr. & Mrs. Roger Howington, 376 Country Club Road, Camden, NC.

Michael Shane McNeely
Portsmouth, VA native

Michael Shane McNeely, age 23, of 1231 North Road Street, Elizabeth City, NC, died Friday in Virginia Beach, VA. Michael, a native of Portsmouth, VA, was the son of David R. McNeely and Kathy M. McNeely. He was a landscaper at Ocean Breeze Water Park and a Protestant.

Besides his parents he is survived by a sister, Stacey Lynn McNeely; a brother Samuel Alan McNeely; a special friend Darlene Matheis; a great aunt and uncle; four uncles; three aunts; eight cousins; and numerous friends.

A funeral service will be Wednesday, July 23, 2003, at 11:00 AM at Twiford’s Northside Chapel and a graveside service will follow at 2:00 PM at Olive Branch Cemetery in Portsmouth, VA. The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:30 PM at Twiford’s Northside Chapel Tuesday evening and at other times at the residence. Memorial donations to assist with the funeral costs may be mailed to Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, NC 27909.

Billy Gene Spencer

Moyock, NC – Billy Gene Spencer, 62, of Moyock, NC, a native of Killarney, Raleigh Co., WV, born on 27 March 1942, passed away at his residence on 14 April 2004. He was raised with his brother, by his greatly loved grandparents, William F. and Mary Morrison Ellis who predeceased him. He is survived by his wife, Jean Silvester Spencer, of Moyock, NC his only daughter and his “Helper” in his around the house jobs, Therese M. (Jim) Tomlinson, of Camden, NC; his sons, Michael F. Large of Chesapeake, VA and T. Eugene Williams of Newport News, VA, his mother, Ruth H. Ellis Outlaw of Hampton, VA, a beloved brother, John F. Spencer, of Moyock, NC, sisters, Sandra Outlaw (Richard) Dunlap, of Toano, VA and Debi Outlaw (Mitch) Worley, of Williamsburg, VA. Mr. Spencer is also survived by grandchildren, Jessica D. Tomlinson, Shane F. Large, Crystal M. Brown, Courtney H. Brown, Brandon M. Large, Ian J. Tomlinson and step-grandchildren, R. Paul Benton, III, and Jacob N. Benton.

His grandchildren dearly loved their “Papa” and his memory will live on in them.

Mr. Spencer is also survived by two sister-in laws, Dorothy A. Silvester of Currituck, NC and E. Marie Silvester of Chesapeake, VA. Also left to mourn is his devoted cat “General Morgan”

He was employed for 31 years as a Pipefitter Supervisor at Norshipco, Norfolk, VA, a job that gave him great satisfaction. Billy also enjoyed working with wood and was always building things for his family and friends and especially enjoyed making things for his grandchildren.

He was a proud member of the Norfolk County Grays #1549, Sons of Confederate Veterans, Chesapeake, VA. One of his projects that he was most proud of was to build benches and the flagpole for the Jackson Grays Confederate Monument on St. Brides Road, West.

Services will be held at Twiford’s Colonial Chapel, Chesapeake, VA at 3:00pm on Sunday, 18 April 2004 with Rev. Johnny McDonald officiating. Burial will follow in the Moyock Memorial Cemetery, Moyock, NC. A visitation will be held Saturday, 17 April 2004 from 7:00-8:30pm at Twiford’s Colonial Chapel, 929 S. Battlefield Blvd., Chesapeake, VA and at the residence at other times.

Steven S. Sherlock

Steven S. Sherlock, age 48, of Fairborn, OH passed away December 19, 2002 in his residence. He was born in Elizabeth City, NC, in 1954 the son of the late John Davis Sherlock, Sr. and Rosa Mae Blanche Sherlock of Elizabeth City, NC. He served his country honorably as a reservist for over 20 years. He was a U.S. Air Force Aircraft Maintenance Air Reserve Technician assigned to 445th Airlift Wing at Wright Patterson Air Force Base. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and fishing and hunting in the great outdoors. Steve was an active member of the Greene County Fish and Game Association.

Besides his mother he is survived by three sons, Jason Sherlock of IL, Donny Wayne, and John Wesley both of Fairborn, OH; one sister, Judy Perry of Elizabeth City, NC; two brothers, John D. Sherlock, Jr. and Brian S. Sherlock both of Elizabeth City, NC; four grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and a special friend, Linda Ward.

Graveside service will be Friday, December 27, 2002 at 1:00 pm in New Hollywood Cemetery with the Rev. Haywood Gillikan. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Aubrey Midgett

RODANTHE, NC - R. AUBREY MIDGETT, SR., 67, of Rodanthe, NC, died February 5, 2004 in a Virginia Beach, VA hospital. Mr. Midgett retired from the U.S. Coast Guard as Chief Engineman with over 20 years of service. He was the son of Richard W. Midgett of Rodanthe and the late Lennie M. Midgett.

Besides his father, Mr. Midgett is survived by two daughters, Laura Midgett of Maryland, and Teresa M. Aldridge of Virginia Beach, VA; five sons, Richard A. Midgett, Jr. and Donnie R. Midgett, both of Virginia Beach, VA, Dean A Midgett and James L. Midgett, both of Norfolk, VA; and a step-son, Marvin J. Byrum, also of Norfolk, VA; three sisters, Patricia Conklin of Nouvee, IL, Cathy Satterfield and June Midgett, both of Rodanthe, NC; a brother, Clifton Boyd Midgett of Rodanthe, NC; sixteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at Fairhaven United Methodist Church on Tuesday, February 10, 2004 at 2:00 pm with Rev. Suzanne Fitch-Slater officiating. Burial with Military Rites will be in the Midgett Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home of Richard W. Midgett, 24205 Hwy 12, Rodanthe. The body will be placed in the church on Monday at noon.

Linda Shipley
Native of Midland, MI

Linda Pauline Laczko Shipley, age 52, of 411 Forest Park Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died Thursday, November 18, 2003, at her residence. Mrs. Shipley, a native of Midland, MI, was the wife of Benjamin Franklin Shipley, IV, of the residence and the daughter of the late Peter Joseph Laczko and Bertha Amelia Wegner Laczko. She was a homemaker and a Catholic.

Besides her husband she is survived by two daughters, Nicole R. Shipley of Arden, NC, and Pauline Marie Shipley of Elizabeth City, NC; a son, Ben Shipley of the residence; three sisters, Loretta Boelkins of Keller, TX, Karen Johsnon of Ft. Worth, TX, and Rosemary Laczko of Ypsilanti, MI; and one brother, Richard Taczko of Williseon, FL.

A memorial service will held at a later date. The family will receive friends at the residence and requests memorial donations to either The Albemarle Hospice, PO Drawer 189, Elizabeth City, NC 279099 or to The American Cancer Society % Hazel Anderson, 106 Ashe Street, Elizabeth City, NC 27909.

Chester Simmons

Elizabeth City, NC - Chester L. Simmons, age 86, of Elizabeth City, NC, died Wednesday, September 22, 2004, in Guardian Care Nursing Home. He was a native of Tyrrell County, NC, and was son of the late William and Nora Simmons. He was the husband of Annie O’Neal Simmons of Elizabeth City, NC. He worked maintenance for the Asplundah Tree Company for 20 years, and was a member of Pearl Street Pentecostal Church.

Besides his wife, Mr. Simmons is survived by several grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was predeceased by two daughters, Linda Ellis and Joyce Simpson; , one sister, Verdia Evans, and one brother, Harvel Simmons.

A funeral service will be Friday, September 24, 2004, at 3:00 PM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Steve Strickland officiating. Burial will follow in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home following the service. At other times the family will be at the home of Judy White, 124 Olivet Circle, Elizabeth City, NC. Barbara J. Simmons
Retired Hostess Roses Restaurant

Barbara J. Simmons, age 73, of 113 Mockingbird Drive, Elizabeth City, NC, died Thursday, October 16, 2003, at the Albemarle Hospital. Mrs. Simmons, a native of Gaston County, NC, was the daughter of the late Joseph Edison Beane and Mamie Ashe Beane, and the wife of Roy V. Simmons of the residence. She was a retired hostess from Roses Restaurant.

Besides her husband she is survived by a daughter, Elizabeth A. Shaner and husband Melvin, of Shawboro, NC; a son, Jeffrey H. Ermer of Crofton, MD; a sister, Alice Brown of Belmont, NC; and three grandchildren, Regina Ermer, Travis Shaner, and Kelli Shaner. She was predeceased by a brother and a sister.

A funeral service will be Saturday, October 18, 2003 at 2:00 PM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC with the Rev. Glenn Greenway officiating. Arnold Simmons, Jr.
FRISCO, N.C. - ALVA ARNOLD SIMMONS, SR, 70, of Frisco, died, Friday, June 4, 2004, in his residence. Mr. Simmons was born in Columbia, N.C. and was retired from the U.S. Coast Guard after 22 years of service and was self employed as a contractor. He was a member of Frying Pan Baptist Church in Columbia, VFW Post # 9280 in Edenton and was Chief Judge at the Dare County Board of Elections Polls in Frisco.

Mr. Simmons was the son of the late Linwood and Lucy Spruill Simmons and the husband of Cora Austin Simmons.

Besides his wife surviving are three sons; Anthony Simmons of Greenville, N.C., Kerry Simmons of Kill Devil Hills and Kevin Simmons of Hatteras, three sisters; Margie Weatherly of Rocky Hock, Iris Ambrose of Creswell and Linda VanMeter of Bridgeport, WV, five grandchildren; Wayne Simmons, Clay Simmons, Cory Simmons, Daniel Simmons and Jennifer Simmons. Mr. Simmons was pre-deceased by his son Arnold Simmons, Jr and brother Glenn Simmons.

A Celebration of Life will be held Monday, June 7, 2004, in Hatteras United Methodist Church at 2:00 p.m. by the Revs. Roger Barnett, Joseph Wynns and Charles Moseley. Burial will be in the Ballance Cemetery. Friends may join the family at Twiford’s Funeral Home, Sunday from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and other times at the residence 50323 Spencer’s Lane in Frisco. Emily Simon

Baltimore, MD - Emily Schofield Simon, age 88, of 609 Cedar St., Elizabeth City, NC, died Thursday, September 18, 2003, in Baltimore, MD. She was born in Cape May, NJ, daughter of the late John D. and Anna Marie Brugger Schofield, and was the widow of Carl Antonio Simon. She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and worked in Accounting with the Civil Service.

Mrs. Simon is survived by a niece Mary Lou Bleakley of Arnold, MD; four nephews, Karl Stansell of Hertford, NC, and Donald D. Stansell of Arnold, MD, John Toy of Delaware and Paul Toy of South Carolina as well as great nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will conducted on Thursday, September 25, 2003 at 10:00 AM at Holy Family Catholic Church with Father Jim Buchholtz officiating. James C. Simons

Mr. James “Jim” Carmen Simons, age 58 of 10406 Natick Court, Richmond, VA died Tuesday, October 8, 2002 in Chippenham Hospital. Mr. Simons was the son of Lillie Maude Sawyer Simons of Elizabeth City and the late James Henry Simons. He was a postman with the U.S. Postal Service and a member of City Road Methodist Church.

Besides his mother, Mr. Simons is survived by one sister, Judy Mayo and husband, Dickie, of Charlottesville, VA and two nieces, Megan Powers and Mandy Mayo.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, October 10, 2002 at 1:00 PM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC with the Rev. Charles McKenzie officiating. Burial will follow in New Hollywood Cemetery. The family will receive friends following the service in the lobby of the funeral home and other times at the residence of his mother at 205 E. Burgess Street, Elizabeth City, NC.

Horace Simpson

Moyock, NC - Horace Lawrence Simpson, Sr., age 85 of 278 Baxter Lane, Moyock, NC, died September 26, 2004, in the Outer Banks Hospital, Nags Head, NC. He was a native of Currituck County, NC, and was son of the late George Vanslack Simpson and Mary Alice Smith Simpson. He was the husband of Lottie “Peggy” Bateman Simpson. He worked as an electrician for the Civil Service, and served in the US Coast Guard. He was retired president for the Portsmouth County Anglers Club, and a member of River City Sam’s Campers Club.

Besides his wife he is survived by one son, Horace Lawrence Simpson Jr., and his wife Lynette of High Point, NC, eight grandchildren and one great grandchild. He was predeceased by one son, George Simpson, four sisters, and five brothers.

A memorial service will be Thursday, September 30, 2004, at 4:00 PM, in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC. The family will receive friends in the lobby of the funeral home immediately following the service. KATHRYN LEE SIMPSON
Native of Currituck County, NC

Kathryn Lee Simpson, 89, of 4023 Caratoke Highway, Barco, NC died Wednesday, October 06, 2004, in the Sentara Barco Nursing Home. She was born in Moyock, NC to the late William R. Lee and Lucy N. Sears Lee and was the widow of the late Charles Douglas Simpson. Mrs. Simpson was the former co-owner/operator of the Lee & Simpson General Merchandise Store and was a member and past worthy matron of the Coinjock Chapter #218 Order of the Eastern Star.

She is survived by a daughter, Edna Simpson Fischer and husband, Al, of Orangeburg, SC, a son, William Douglas Simpson of Barco, NC; eight grandchildren, Cathy Lupton, Keith Morgan, Cindy Youmans, Kristi Marlow, Carol Brown, Hall Fischer, Burt Fischer and Lisa Abrams; 18 great grandchildren.

Graveside services will be conducted Saturday morning, October 9, 2004, at 11:00am in the New Hollywood Cemetery by Wayne Twiford. Eastern Star Rites will be conducted by Coinjock Chapter #218 OES at the graveside. The family will receive friends and relatives at Twiford Funeral Home, 405 E. Doris Singer

Elizabeth City, NC - Doris Gogel Singer, age 85, of 300 Troy Drive, Elizabeth City, NC, died Monday, April 19, 2004, in the Albemarle Hospital. She was a native of Brooklyn, NY, and the daughter of the late Samuel Gogel and Celia Krull Gogel, and the wife of the late Jerome “Jerry” Singer. She was a retired Kindergarten teacher, and was of the Jewish faith.

Mrs. Singer is survived by one son, Richard and his wife Denise Singer of Elizabeth City, NC; one brother, Kenneth Gogel of Forest, VA; four grandchildren, Matthew and his wife Jennifer Singer of Islip, NY, Jeremy Singer of Oakdale, NY, Ashley Singer, and Abby Singer both of Elizabeth City, NC.

A private memorial service will be conducted at a later date.

Haywood Louis Small
Native of Perquimans Co., NC

Haywood Louis Small, age 90, of Hertford, NC, died Monday, May 10, 2004, in Brian Center Nursing Home, Hertford, NC. He was a native of Perquimans County, NC. He was son of the late Joshua Clinton Small and Sally Ann Godfrey Small, and husband of Irene Casper Small of the residence. He was predeceased by his first wife, Lessie Stallings Small. He was a retired farmer and a member of New Hope United Methodist Church and former Sunday school teacher for the Men’s Class and he served on several church committees. Mr. Small was active in politics and in the Democratic Party. He was loved and missed by all.

Besides his wife he is survived by one daughter, Clara Small Hollowell and her husband Ralph of Hobbsville, NC; one son, Carlton Haywood Small and his wife Gertie of Elizabeth City, NC; one stepdaughter, Bessie Sue Shortridge of Hertford, NC; one stepson, Robert Lee Casper of Virginia Beach, VA; one sister, Myrtle Small Rhue of Virginia Beach, VA; two grandchildren, Ralph Hollowell and Mark A. Small; two great grandchildren, Jacob Hollowell and Joshua Hollowell, two step grandchildren and two step great grandchild. Mr. Small was predeceased by one brother and four sisters.

A graveside service will be Wednesday, May 12, 2004, at 4:00 PM at Cedarwood Cemetery, in Hertford, NC, with the Rev. Alan Gibson officiating. The family will be at the residence of Ralph Hollowell, Jr., 150 Doll Harrell Road, Hertford, NC and at Mr. Small’s residence, 676 Deep Creek Road, Hertford, NC. Betty Smith

Elizabeth City, NC - Mrs. Betty Mizelle Smith, age 64, of 1209 Azalea Trail, Elizabeth City, NC died Tuesday, July 1, 2003, at Albemarle Hospital. Mrs. Smith was born in Chowan County, NC to the late David Preston Mizelle and Mattie Thomas Baker Mizelle and was the widow of Phillip Royce Smith, Sr. She was a retired Licensed Practical Nurse and a member of Faith Baptist Church.

Mrs. Smith is survived by three daughters, Angie M. McWalter of the residence; Tammy M. Duke and husband, Randall, Sr. of Salt Lake City, UT, and Melissa L. Smith of Elizabeth City, NC; one son, Phillip Royce Smith, Jr. and fiancé Terry of Elizabeth City, NC; two sisters, Doris Wasco and husband, Dennis of Tuscon, AZ and Katherine Umphlett of Edenton, NC; five brothers, Arcie Mizelle and wife, Lanora of Hinesville, GA, Forrest Mizelle of Asheville, NC, David Mizelle and wife, Ramona of Edenton, NC, Kermit Mizelle and wife, Iris of Chadburn, NC, and Charles Thomas Mizelle and wife, Kim of Elizabeth City, NC; six grandchildren, George Spruill IV, Holly Spruill, Randall L. Duke, Jr., Ashley P. Duke, Kelly L. Smith, and Phillip R. Smith III; and two great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be conducted on Saturday, July 5, 2003, at 4:00 PM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel by the Pastor Al Thompson. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 2:00 to 4:00 PM at the funeral home and at other times at the residence.

CLIFFORD HENSON SMITH
Retired Ford Assembly Plant

Clifford Henson Smith, 56, 301 Hasting Lane, Elizabeth City, NC died at his residence Tuesday afternoon, July 29, 2003. He was born in Hamlin, West Virginia to the late Albert Freeman and Iva Ellen Jaynes Smith. Mr. Smith was a member and deacon of the Faith Baptist Church, a graduate of Guyan Valley High School, West Hamlin, WV and was retired from the Ford Assembly Plant in Norfolk, VA.

Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Velma Holley Smith of the home, a daughter, Priscilla Riopell and husband Bruce of Louisville, KY; a son, Clifford H. Smith II and wife Angela, of West Hamlin, WV; seven sisters, Marvin Buckner of West Hamlin, WV, Eileen Sines of Brookpark, OH, Emilee Stone of Hamlin, WV, Alberta Hinkle, Ravenswood, WV, Roberta Eplion of Huntington, WV, Doris Tackett of Pickerington, OH and Frances Meads of Scottown, OH; two brothers, Jimmy Smith and Lawrence Smith both of West Hamlin, WV. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Anthony Bailey, Brandon Bailey, Tristan Smith, Ryan Riopell and Elizabeth Riopell. He was preceded in death by a brother, Freeman Smith.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 31, 2003, 2:00pm in the Faith Baptist Church by Rev. Dr. Al Thompson. The family will receive friends and relatives at the church immediately following the service and at other times at their residence, 301 Hastings Lane, Elizabeth City. Graveside services will be Saturday, August 2, 2003, at 11:00am in the Lincoln Memorial Cemetery, West Hamlin, WV. A visitation will be at Handley Funeral Home, in Hamlin, WV. Friday evening from 6:00 until 8:00pm. EVELYN KIRBY SMITH

Evelyn Kirby Smith, 92, of 1700 W. Ehringhaus Street, Elizabeth City died Tuesday, November 18, 2003. She was born in Perquimans County, NC to the late Samuel H. and Irene Dail Kirby and was the widow of the late Lewis Smith and the late Haywood Proctor. Mrs. Smith was a member of the First Christian Church, Loyal Women’s Bible Class, Rebecca Lodge #62, and a member of the United Methodist Women in Winfall, NC.

She is survived by numerous friends.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, November 20, 2003, at 2:00pm in the Twiford Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City by Rev. Dr. Glenn Brigman. Burial will be in the West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Family and friends will gather in the lobby of the funeral home immediately following the chapel service to visit and fellowship.

Twiford Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
