Louise Smith

HARBINGER, N.C. - LOUISE SAWYER SMITH, 93, of Harbinger, died, Monday, April 5, 2004 at the home of her son and daughter-in law, Sammy and Jackie Smith in Kitty Hawk. Mrs. Smith was born and lived most of her life in Harbinger, she was a homemaker and a member of Powells Point Christian Church.

She was the daughter of the late Samuel and Lydia Harrison Sawyer and the wife of the late J. Bryan Smith, Sr.

Surviving are two sons; J. Bryan Smith, Jr and wife Lois of Raleigh and Sammy O. Smith and wife Jackie of Kitty Hawk, 8 grandchildren; Andy Smith and wife Cindy, Madge Waterman and husband Tory, Lisa Ellstrom and husband Steve, Jason Smith and wife Sherrie, Monique Martin and husband Barry, Michelle Smith, Melissa Ambrose and husband Roy and Mincie Coder and husband Mike and 20 great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held Thursday, April 8, 2004, at 2:00 p.m. in Powells Point Christian Church by the Rev. David Coxman with burial in the Smith Family Cemetery in Harbinger. Memorial donations may be made to the Powells Point Christian Church, 197 Church Road, Harbinger. Friends may join the family at the church Wednesday, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and at other times at the residence of her son Sammy Smith, 3864 Moore Shore Road, Kitty Hawk. Twiford’s Colony Chapel Manteo is handling arrangements.

Martin Larry Schulteiss

Hertford, NC - Martin Larry Schultheiss, Sr. age 71, of 140 Hemlock Street, Snug Harbor, Hertford, NC, died Sunday, June 13, 2004 in the Albemarle Hospital. He was a native of Brooklyn, NY, and was the husband of Mary Evelyn Jackson Schultheiss of the residence. He was a salesman with electrolux for 43 years, and was a veteran of the US Navy.

He is survived by two daughters, Brenda Schultheiss Payne and her husband James, Lisa Schultheiss and her husband Scott Evans, all of Hertford, NC; one son Larry Schultheiss of Hertford, NC; two brothers, Edward Schultheiss of Bell Moore, NY, Arthur Schultheiss of Jensen Beach, FL; four grandchildren, Chad Chappell, Nicole Ambrose, Hunter Evans, and Lee Anne Evans.

A graveside service will be Wednesday, June 16, 2004, at 1:00 PM in Highland Park Cemetery with Chaplain Doug Simons officiating. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC. At other times the family will be at the residence, 140 Hemlock Street, Hertford, NC. Twiford Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Sue Scott

Sue Bray Scott, 100, of 1700 West Ehringhaus Street, Elizabeth City, NC, died Saturday, January 25, 2003 at Albemarle Hospital. She was born in Pasquotank County, NC to the late James A. and Mary Jane Williams Bray and was the widow of Charlie Scott. She was a former inspector with the Elizabeth City Hosiery Mill and was a member of Berea Baptist Church.

Mrs. Scott is survived by two sons, Johnnie Warren Scott of Elizabeth City, NC and William Earl Scott of Williamston, NC; two grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and five great-great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be conducted on Tuesday, January 28, 2003 at 2:00 PM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Glenn Greenway and the Rev. Roger Stanley. Burial will be at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive relatives and friends at the funeral home immediately following the service and at other times at the residence of her grandson, Linwood Earl Scott, 585 Esclip Road, Elizabeth City, NC. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Berea Baptist Church Family Life Center, 2033 North Road Street, Elizabeth City, NC 27909.

EDRIE VIRGINIA SCOTT
Pasquotank County native

Edrie Virginia Scott, 60, of 919 Selby Road, Elizabeth City, NC died Tuesday, April 8, 2003, in the Winslow Memorial Home. She was born in Elizabeth City to J. Selby Scott and Grace White Scott. Miss Scott was a member of the First Baptist Church.

Besides her parents, she is survived by a sister, Ann S. Cartwright and husband, Jimmy, of Elizabeth City, NC and two nephews, Scott Cartwright of Elizabeth City, NC and Ashley Cartwright of Camden, NC.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, April 10, 2003, at 2:00pm in the Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, NC by Rev. Dr. Lamar Eiland. Burial will follow in the Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the First Baptist Church Memorial Fund, P. O. Drawer #402, Elizabeth City, NC 27907-0402 or to one’s favorite charity. The family will be at 919 Selby Road, Elizabeth City, NC. Twiford Funeral Home, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, NC is in charge of arrangements.

William Earl Scott
Retired Highway Patrol Telecommunicator

William Earl Scott, age 78, of 1201 Reddicks Grove, Church Road, Williamston, NC, died Tuesday, November 18, 2003 at Martin General Hospital. Mr. Scott, a native of Pasquotank County, was the husband of Mary Carmichael Scott of the residence and the son of the late Charlie Scott and Sue Bray Scott. He graduated from Central High School, was a retired telecommunicator after 30 years with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, a member of Piney Grove Baptist Church, and the Eureka Masonic Lodge #317 AF & AM.

Besides his wife he is survived by a son Linwood Earl Scott of Elizabeth City, NC; two step-daughters, Linda W. Britton of Wake Forest, NC, and Joyce Davis of Raleigh, NC; a step-son, Lynn R. Williams of Greenville, NC; a brother, Johnnie Warren Scott of Elizabeth City, NC; six grand children; and seven great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Friday, November 21, 2003 at 2:00 PM at Twiford’s Northside Chapel, 1115 North Road Street, Elizabeth City, NC, with the Rev. Glenn Greenway officiating. Burial will follow in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday evening from 7:00 to 8:30 PM.

James Meekins

STUMPY POINT, NC - JAMES G. “JIM” Meekins, 76, died Thursday, July 24th at his home. Mr. Meekins was born in Stumpy Point and was the son of the late Garland E. and Aldine Twiford Meekins. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Myra Best Meekins. He has a daughter, Myra “Cookie” Midgett and husband, John, a son, James “Dickie” Meekins, Jr and wife Pam, and a daughter, Holly all of Stumpy Point. He has two grandchildren, Candace Hurdle and Luke Midgett and wife Trudy and a brother, Phillip Meekins and wife Jeanne of Virginia Beach. He is pre-deceased by a sister, Janice M. Butler

Jim was retired from the United States Navy and was a commercial fiherman. He was a member of the Shiloh United Methodist Church where he taught Sunday School for many years. He was a member of the USN Fleet Reserve and the Stumpy Point Volunteer Fire Dept and Stumpy Point Civic Club. He loved his family, friends and community very much.

A service of remembrance will be held Sunday, July 27, 2003, at 3:00 p.m. at Shiloh United Methodist Church in Stumpy Point with the Rev. William T. Clarke and the Rev. Thomas Jennings officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the Fellowship Hall of the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Shiloh United Methodist Church Building Fund, P.O.Box 256, Stumpy Point. N.C. 27978. Twiford’s Colony Chapel Manteo is assisting the Meekins family.

Johnnie Scott

Johnnie W. Scott, 82, of 1306 West Church Street, Elizabeth City, died Friday, December 12, 2003, in the Barco Sentara Nursing Home. Mr. Scott was born in Pasquotank County to the late Charlie and Sue Bray Scott and was the widower of the late Kathryn Gray Scott. He was a retired maintenance officer for the U. S. Navy, a Pearl Harbor veteran having served aboard the USS California, a member of the Berea Baptist Church, former owner/operator of Kay Jay Foods and a member of the VFW Post #6060.

Mr. Scott is survived by one son, Robert “Sam” Scott and wife, Mary of Janesville, Wisconsin, four grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Charles “Chuck” Scott and a brother, William E. Scott.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, December 17, 2003, at 11:00am in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel by Rev. Roger Stanley. Burial will be in the West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will greet friends and relatives in the lobby of the funeral immediately following the service. Twiford Funeral Home, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, NC.

Damien Langley

Moyock, NC - Damien Scott Langley, infant son of Billy Ray Langley, Jr. and Brandy Leigh Green, died Monday, April 7, 2003 at Albemarle Hospital.

Besides his parents, Damien is survived by maternal grandparents, James Albert Miller III and Sherri Ann Miller of Moyock, NC; paternal grandparents, Billy Ray Langley Sr. and Virginia Langley of Maple, NC; maternal great grandparents, Emilino Velasco and Martha Velasco of Great Bridge, VA; paternal great grandparents, F. C. Twiford, Sr. and Gladys Twiford of Poplar Branch, NC and Sarah Langley of Moyock, NC; three aunts, Angela Farr, Julie Rollman, and Jamie Lynn Miller; and three uncles, Bobby J. Green, Brian Scott Green, a.k.a. Uncle Rocky “ My favorite little one, you will always be my Sunshine Bear”, and James Albert Miller IV.

A memorial service will be conducted on Saturday, April 12, 2003 at 1:00 PM at Twiford’s Northside Chapel by the Chaplain J. Douglas Simons.

William "Bill" Meredith, Jr.

Nags Head - William Bankhead “Bill” Meredith, Jr. 63, died Monday, September 13, 2004 at his residence. Mr. Meredith was born in Norfolk, VA, was owner of Water Works and Captain of the head boat Miss Virginia Dare. He was a former Nags Head Councilman, a school teacher for 17 years with the Virginia Beach School System, a charter boat captain at Rudee Inlet in Virginia Beach for 27 years. Mr. Meredith was the son of the late William Bankhead Meredith, Sr. and Virginia Bell Meredith of Virginia Beach, VA and was the husband of Catherine Franklin Meredith of Nags Head.

Besides his mother and wife, he is survived by two daughters, Kelly Lasco and Mark of Southern Shores and Laurin Meredith of Nags Head; three sons, William Bankhead, “Banks” Meredith, III and Lisa and Patterson of Kitty Hawk, Austin Reed Meredith and Michelle and Joseph Henry Meredith, all of Nags Head; one sister, Betty Meredith of Norfolk, VA; two brothers, George Minor Meredith and Andrew Dalton Meredith, both of Virginia Beach, VA; three grandchildren, Skyler and Tanner Lasco and Madison Meredith; a former wife, Joanne Smith Wade of Chesapeake, VA; dedicated friends, Jeff Wells, Harry Schiavone, Carl Talley and many more; his beloved dogs, Bell and Gin.

A Memorial service will be held at St. Andrews By-the-Sea Episcopal Church on Saturday, September 18, 2004 at 11:00 AM with devoted friend, the Rev. Charles Gill and Rev. William Brake officiating. Memorial donations may be made to St. Andrews By-the-Sea Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 445 Nags Head, NC 27959 or First Flight Lions Club, 2706 N. Croatan Highway, Kill Devil Hills, NC 27948 or Manteo Lions Club, 1409 Park Road, Manteo, NC 27954.

George Scott

KILL DEVIL HILLS, N.C. - GEORGE HOFFMAN SCOTT, 72, of Kill Devil Hills, died Friday, January 16, 2004, in Nags Head. Mr. Scott was born in Ocean City, New Jersey and was a retired U.S. Navy Chief serving 22 years. Mr. Scott was a Catholic and was a member of Marathon Lodge #323, AF&AM; , Mahi Temple AAONMS of Miami, Fla, Elks Club, Fleet Reserve Association, American Legion and a real estate salesman and appraiser.

He was the son of the late Asher H. and Roxie Sylvane Scott.

Surviving are his step-mother; Margaret J. Scott of Nags Head, three daughters; Georgia Pledger of Fort Lauderdale, Fla, Deborah Reichard of Kill Devil Hills and Cindy Straitler of Fort Wayne, Texas, two brothers; Ronnie Scott of Nags Head and Asher Scott of Kill Devil Hills. Six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Twiford’s Colony Chapel Manteo is assisting the Scott family.

A. Grey Sedman

Elizabeth City, NC - One of God’s most faithful servants, A. “Grey” Sedman departed this earth on June 14, 2004 at the Albemarle Hospital in Elizabeth City, NC. He was born on July 29, 1922 in Chattanooga, TN. He was the son of the late Archie Sedman and Gold Smith Sedman also of Chattanooga, TN. Also preceding him in death were twin brothers, Richard and Kenneth Sedman.

He was a member of the Red Bank United Methodist Church for 45 years. He was the treasurer of the Carver-Tarwater Sunday School Class for thirty years and also served the church on its administrative board in various positions. His most recent office was church treasurer. He was witnessed by friends and strangers alike living out his Christian life by devoting much of his time and energy to his family, his church, and those less fortunate. He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps, ranking as Corporal. He was educated at Chattanooga Central High School, and after his army stint, he attended the University of Chattanooga. He retired from the 3M Corporation of Chattanooga with 38 years of service. He was a proud member of the Red Bank Lions Club. He was an American sports enthusiast all his life, being especially dedicated to the University of Tennessee Volunteer Football Team. He was an avid reader of the history of the Confederate War and a collector of its artifacts. Grey lived most of his life in Chattanooga, but in 1996 moved to Staunton, VA to be near his family. In the spring of this year he moved to Elizabeth City, NC, with his family where he was stricken with cancer with a vengeance and survived only two and one half months.

Survivors include his twin sister, K. “Faye” Sedman Holder, a very special niece, Lynda Gayle Holder Pitts and her husband Donald, all of Elizabeth City, NC; a very special great nephew, McCall “Mac” Pitts and his wife Laura; a great, great nephew, Greyson and a great great niece, McCall Pitts all of London, England; also a very special great niece Bethany Pitts Lloyd and her husband, Wayne “Buddy” Lloyd, and great great niece Meredith Elaine Lloyd, all of Grottoes, VA. Included are several cousins and many very dear friends, including those in the Carver-Tarwater Sunday School Class.

A military funeral will be conducted by the Rev. John Dutton of the Riverside United Methodist Church. The funeral will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, June 18, 2004 in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC. Entombment will be in the Mausoleum at West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery following the service. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM. At other times the family will be at his nieces home at 4007 Timmerman Drive, Elizabeth City, NC. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Red Bank United Methodist Church, 3800 Dayton Blvd. Chattanooga, TN 37415 Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, NC is in charge of arrangements.

SEVERN LAYFEYETTE WHITEHEAD III

Moyock – Severn Layfeyette (Tony) Whitehead III, 39, passed away Friday, February 6th, 2004. He was a bricklayer for over 21 years, and loved fishing and hunting.
He is survived by his loving wife of 20 years Alice Marie Slade Whitehead; his parents Severn Lafeyette Whitehead Jr. and Dorothy Lee Smith Whitehead; daughters Krystal E. Whitehead and Tracy L. Whitehead, both of Moyock NC; sisters Cynthia Whitehead of Moyock NC, Sharon Michaels of Camdon NC; brothers Terry Whitehead and Barry Whitehead, both of Chesapeake VA.
The family will receive friends at Twiford’s Colonial Chapel 929 S. Battlefield Blvd Chesapeake Wednesday February 11th, 2004 from 10 to 11:30 AM. A graveside service will also be held Wednesday at Laurel Memorial Gardens, Poplar Branch NC. at 2 PM with Pastor Howlett officiating. The family will also receive friends at his mother’s house at 126 Rolling Creek Rd., Moyock.

Hilda Rogers Seymour

Elizabeth City, NC - Hilda Rogers Seymour, 90, of Elizabeth City, NC died Thursday, February 20, 2003 at Albemarle Hospital. She was born in Pasquotank County, NC to the late George Washington and Mary Etheridge Rogers and was the widow of Marvin B. Seymour. She was a homemaker and a member of City Road United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Seymour is survived by two sons, George Marvin Seymour of Roanoke, VA and Richard R. Seymour of Elizabeth City, NC; five grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be conducted on Saturday, February 22, 2003 at 11:00 AM at City Road United Methodist Church by the Rev. Charles McKenzie. Burial will follow at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel on Friday from 7:00 to 8:30 PM and at other times at the residence of Richard Seymour, 898 Well Field Road, Elizabeth City, NC.

The battle is over, the victory is won. No more sorrow, no more pain. For those who die in Christ, they shall be made whole and live again forever. Amen.

Sadie B. Seymour
Matewan, WV native

Sadie Blankenship Seymour, age 80, formerly of Barco, NC died Sunday, August 24, 2003 at Guardian Care Nursing Home. She was born in Matewan, WV and was the daughter of the late Penny and Bertha Justice Blankenship and the widow of Marvin Seymour.

Mrs. Seymour is survived by two sons, Ralph Martin of Corpus Christi, TX, and Walter Martin of Big Sandy, TN; a sister, Jean Williams of Poplar Branch, NC; a nephew, Calvin Forbes of Barco, NC, and several grand children.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC, is in charge of arrangements.

HAZEL W. SHANE

VIRGINIA BEACH - Hazel Warren Shane of the 3400 block of Glen Arden Road died December 21, 2003. Mrs. Shane was born in Belhaven, NC and was the widow of Llewellyn Shane, Jr. She was the former owner of Shane Realty and Insurance in Norfolk.

She is survived by her son Marvin Price of Virginia Beach, Peggy Brooks of California, and Theda LaVake of Wisconsin; also a very special (second son) Danny Dabbs of Virginia Beach.

Hannah S. Shannonhouse
Native of Perquimans County, NC

Hannah Stephens Shannonhouse, age 89 of 105 South Griffin Street, Elizabeth City, NC, died Saturday, September 13, 2003 at Albemarle Hospital. She was born in Hertford, NC, daughter of the late Patrick Leonard and Hannah Keenan Stephens and was the wife of Alfred Carver “A.C.” Shannonhouse of the residence. She was a very active member of First United Methodist Church and a member of the Fellowship Sunday School Class. Mrs. Shannonhouse was a home maker and worked at one time as a L.P.N. at Albemarle Hospital.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Shannonhouse is survived by a daughter, Gail S. Buckley and husband Dr. Thomas Buckley of Charlotte, NC; a son, James S. “Jim” Shannonhouse and wife Sandra of Arlington, TX; six grandchildren, Ed, Teresa, Kelly, Neil, Mike, and Lori; and eight great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by five sisters.

A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, September 16, 2003 at 2:00 PM in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery with Rev. Clyde Denny officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday evening from 7:00 until 8:30 and at other times at the residence. Memorial donations may be made to First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 401, Elizabeth City, NC, 27907.

Josephine Sharman

Poplar Branch, NC - Josephine Ann Clark Sharman, 70, of Poplar Branch, NC, died Thursday, October 23, 2003 at Albemarle Hospital. She was born in Lamar, MO to the late Stephen and Bessie Hamner Clark and was the widow of Ronald Dean Sharman. She was a homemaker.

Mrs. Sharman is survived by two sons, Steven Sharman of Grandy, NC and Michael Sharman of Davenport, FL; a granddaughter, Lisa Baxter of Atlanta, GA; and a niece, Barbara Dennis of Lamar, MO.

Elizabeth Shaver

Newport News, VA - Elizabeth Hoffman Shaver, 87, died on Friday, June 25, 2004 at a Nags Head nursing facility. Mrs. Shaver was born in Newport News, VA and was a housewife. She was the widow of Paul F.M. Shaver, Jr.

Her survivors include one daughter, Sally Cudworth and husband Carl of Maryland; three sons, Jack Shaver and wife, Mary Lou of Newport News, Paul F.M. Shaver, III and wife Sarah K. of Nags Head and Bill Shaver and wife Cheryl of Roanoke, VA; one sister, Rose Bud Thomas of Newport News; one brother, Felix Hoffman of Georgia; five grandchildren, Aaron, Jordan and Ethan Cudworth, Kimberly Harrah and Leonard Bennett and two great-grandchildren, Sidney Smith and Kendall Carrithers.

A Funeral Mass will be held at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Newport News on Wednesday, June 30, 2004 at 7:30 PM with MSGR Mike McCarron officiating and a reception following. The family will receive friends right before the funeral mass from 6:00 PM to 7:15 PM. A prayer service at the church on Thursday, July 1st at 9:30 AM and a Christian burial will follow at 10:00 AM in Peninsula Memorial Park.
