John E. Rountree, Sr.
Merchant Seaman

John E. Rountree, Sr., age 48 of Grandy, NC passed away August 1, 2003 in his home. He was a native of Portsmouth, VA; son of the late Nurney L. Rountree, Sr. and the late Edna W. Rountree. He was the husband of Cleo R. Rountree of the residence. He was a member of the Seafarer’s International Union and served his country as a Merchant Seaman for over fifteen years.

Besides his wife, Mr. Rountree is survived by two daughters, Alicia F. Rountree of Norfolk, VA and Maegan R. Rountree of Wilmington, NC; a son, John E. Rountree, Jr. of Grandy, NC; two sisters, Linda A. Rountree of Portsmouth, VA and Rita R. Brett and husband, Ronnie, of Suffolk, VA; a brother, Nurney L. Rountree, Jr. and wife, Karen, of Virginia Beach, VA. He was predeceased by a sister, Virginia R. Barber.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 9, 2003 at 2:00 PM at the home of Bob and Sylvia Kirk, 161 Tabernacle Lane, Aydlett, NC. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial donations be made in care of Twiford Funeral Home, P. O. Drawer 405, Elizabeth City, NC 27907 to assist with funeral expenses.

Elizabeth Brewer Russell

Elizabeth Brewer Russell, of 1403 River Rd., Elizabeth City, NC died Wednesday, December 18, 2002 at Winslow Memorial Home. She was born in Statesville, NC; daughter of the late Dewey S. and Mary E. Lambert Brewer and was the widow of Paul M. Russell. She was a member of the Elizabeth City Church of Christ.

Mrs. Russell is survived by two sisters, Marie James of Chesapeake, VA and Dorothy Hill of Elizabeth City, NC; three brothers, Gentry Brewer and D. S. Brewer, Jr., both of Statesville, NC and Wayne Brewer of Colorado: two grandchildren and six great grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, Walter Hubert Davenport and a brother, Bill Brewer.

A graveside service will be conducted on Friday, December 20, 2002 at 11:00 AM in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery with Minister Mike McNamara officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial donations be made to the Elizabeth City Church of Christ, 1923 N. Road St., Elizabeth City, NC 27909.

John V. Russell, III

John Vernon Russell, III, age 55, of 146 Texas Road, Old Trap, NC, died Sunday, November 24, 2002 in the Albemarle Hospital. He was born in Old Trap, NC; son of Margaret Forbes Russell Burgess of Old Trap, NC and the late John Vernon Russell, Jr. Mr. Russell worked as a Diesel Mechanic and served in the US Air Force.

He is survived by two daughters; Michelle Mills of Lexington, SC, and Denise Norris of Elizabeth City, NC; two sons, John Vernon Russell, IV of Havelock, NC, and Brian Russell of San Diego, CA; three sisters, Darlene McDonald of Vanceboro, NC, Deloras Meads of Elizabeth City, NC, and Teresa Swinson of Old Trap, NC; one brother, William Russell of Old Trap, NC; and five grandchildren, Jessica Mills, Yoshi Russell, RexAnn Mills, Taylor Norris, and Ashley Russell.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, November 29, 2002 at 11:30 AM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with Pastor Al Thompson officiating. The family will be at the home of Margaret Burgess, 1394 South 343, Old Trap, NC. In lieu of flowers the family ask that memorial donations be made to The American Cancer Society, or the charity of one’s choice.

Nancy James Randolph

Elizabeth City, NC - Nancy James Randolph, age 99, formerly of Cedar St., Elizabeth City, NC died Tuesday, September 30, 2003 at Guardian Care Nursing Home. She was born in Camden County, NC; daughter of the late Benjamin Burnham James, Jr. and the late Julia Jacobs James and was the widow of George Bertram Randolph. She was a member of the First Baptist Church and a former member of the Elizabeth City Women’s Club and the American Legion Auxiliary.

Mrs. Randolph is survived by a son, George B. Randolph, Jr. of Alexandria, VA; two sisters, Mavourneen Havens, Jr. of Tarboro, NC and Ruth J. Miller of Elizabeth City, NC; two grandchildren, five great grandchildren, two step grandchildren, and two step great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be conducted on Thursday, October 2, 2003 at 11:00 am in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, NC with the Rev. Dr. Lamar Eiland officiating. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the lobby of the funeral home immediately following the service. Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Bonnie Sue Rank
Dare County Bd. Of Ed. Secretary

Bonnie Sue Rank, age 42, of 125 Woodhouse Drive, Grandy, NC, died Wednesday, February 19, 2003, at her residence. Miss Rank, a native of Bethesda, MD, was the daughter of William Rank of the residence, and the late Flora Quick Rank. A graduate of East Carolina University, she was formerly a social worker in Delaware and Currituck and presently was a secretary for the Maintenance Department of the Dare County board of Education in Manteo. She was involved, enjoyed and active in many sports and a member of good Creek Golf Club. She was a member of Grace Luteran Church By the Sea in Nags Head, NC.

Besides her father she is survived by a sister, Elizabeth Ann Rank of Raleigh, NC; three brothers, William C. Rank, and wife Chris of Hopatcong, NJ, Robert P. Rank of Nantucket, MA, and Bradley J. Rankand wife Sharon, of Rhoadesville, VA.

A memorial service will be Sunday, February 23, 2003, at 2:00 PM at Grace Lutheran Church By the Sea with the Rev. James P. Lauer officiating. The family will receive friends at the residence and request memorial donations to the church’s building fund.

Francis W. Rankin
Native of Cedar Clift, NY

Francis Wilbur Rankin, age 83, of 1700 West Ehringhaus Street, Elizabeth City, NC, died Monday, December 8, 2003, at Winslow Memorial Nursing Home. Mr. Rankin, a native of Cedar Cliff, NY, was the widower of Margaret West Rankin and the son of the late Raymond Rankin and Katherine O”Dell Rankin. He was a retired materials expediter from IBM and a Lutheran.

He is survived by a daughter, Carolyn Rankin of New Jersey; a son Frank Rankin of Elizabeth City, NC; two sisters, Mary Nott Newburgh, NY, and Margaret Galletly, Virginia; six grandchildren; and several great grand-children.

A memorial service will be Monday, December 15, 2003, at City Road United Methodist Church with the Rev. Charles McKenzie officiating. The family will receive friends at the residence of the son, Mr. & Mrs. Frank Rankin, 707 Alton Street, Elizabeth City, NC 27909. Memorial donations may be made to City Road United Methodist Church Mission’s Committee, PO Box 535, Elizabeth City, NC 27907.

Ellis Ransom

Frisco, NC - Ellis Melvin Ransom, 69, of Frisco, NC died Friday, April 9, 2004 in Greensboro, NC. He was born in Norfolk, VA to the late Dennett Henry and Ella Rollingson Ransom and was a retired engineer with the N.C.D.O.T. Ferry Division and a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.

Mr. Ransom is survived by a nephew, Dennett A. Ransom of Frisco, NC. He was preceded in death by a brother, Dennett E. Ransom.

No services are planned at this time. Twiford’s Island Chapel, Hatteras, NC is in charge of arrangements.

ROY GEARHART RAST
Retired USN veteran

Roy G. Rast, age 67, of 1065 Aydlett Road, Poplar Branch, NC died Saturday morning, Jan. 4, 2003, in the Brian Center. He was born in Yacolt, Washington. Mr. Rast was retired from the US Navy after 22 years of service and formerly worked at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard as a sheet metal worker. He was a Baptist.

He is survived by his wife, Sarah Ledbetter Rast of the home, several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2003, at 3:00pm in the Twiford Memorial Chapel, Church St., Elizabeth City, NC. There will be a visitation for family and friends, Monday evening from 7:00 until 8:00 at the funeral home. Also, following the chapel services the family will greet friends in the lobby of the funeral home.

Esle Hobbs Rathner
Pasquotank County, NC native

Esle Hobbs Rathner, age 85, of 804 Baxter Street, Elizabeth City, NC, died Friday, September 17, 2004 at Guardian Care Nursing Home. She was a native of Pasquotank County, NC, and the wife of Lee Rathner of the residence. Mrs. Rathner was the daughter of the late John Walton Hobbs and Bessie Palmer Hobbs. She was a retired civil service worker with the U.S. Coast Guard Air Station, a member of First United Methodist Church, and the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Rathner is survived by a daughter Betty Jo Rathner Sutherland and husband, John, of Atlanta, GA; and two grandsons, John Lee Sutherland, Jr. of Atlanta, GA, and Tim Rogers of Denver, CO; and a special nephew, Tommy Spencer of Kitty Hawk, NC. She was preceded in death by a daughter Margaret R. Mitchell, who died in March, 2004.

A graveside service for Mrs. Rathner and her daughter, Margaret, will be held Monday, September 27, 2004, at 11:00am in the Highland Park Cemetery, Elizabeth City by Rev. T. R. Miller. The family will be at the residence, 804 Baxter St., Elizabeth City. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the American Heart Association and the Scleroderma Foundation. Twiford Funeral Home, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, NC is assisting the Rathner family.

"Mr. Otto" Rauchschwalbe

NAGS HEAD, NC - OTTO “MR. OTTO” RAUCHSCHWALBE, 88, of Nags Head, NC, died Sunday, August 8, 2004. Mr. Otto, born in Milwaukee, WI, was a business entrepreneur, a professional jazz pianist, and animal lover. He was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Navy as a Lieutenant during WWII. He was a graduate of the University of Chicago in 1932 with classmate, Katharyn Graham, and earned an MS degree from University of Maryland in Economics. He was an economist for the Departments of Agriculture and Interior, and taught statistics for the USDA Graduate School. He was a Washington, D.C., representative for a mid-western brokerage firm. He formerly owned the Best Western in Laurel, MD, and was the current owner of the Budget Host Inn in Kill Devil Hills, NC.

Mr. Otto is survived by his business partner and long-time companion, Marion Peterson; two daughters, Joan Ward of Gaithersburg, MD, Renae Rauchschwalbe of Silver Spring, MD; one son, Frank Rauchschwalbe of Sonora, CA; and his cats, Cocoa, Bootsie, Friendly, Cindy, Tiptoe, Chawanook, and Sweetie.

Funeral services will be held at Twiford’s Colony Chapel, Manteo on Thursday, August 12, 2004 at 11:00 am. Burial will be in a local cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday evening from 7:00 to 8:30 pm.

William D. Ready, Sr.

WILLIAM DAVID READY, SR., 76, of Southern Shores, NC died Sunday, July 13, 2003 in a Norfolk, VA hospital. Mr. Ready, born in Hempstead, Long Island, NY, was a retired Consultant and was a Protestant. He was a member of the Duck Woods Country Club and was President for two years and Secretary for six years of “SCORE.” He was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He was the son of the late William Edward and Elsie Cronk Ready.

Mr. Ready is survived by his wife, Barbara Roemer Ready of the residence; three daughters, Judy Rixham and husband Jeff, of Baltimore, MD, Susan Martin of Providence, RI, and Karen Phillips and husband, Alan, of Baltimore, MD; one son, W. David Ready, Jr. and wife, Dana of Dublin, OH; and ten grandchildren.

A Service of Remembrance will be held at the residence, 59 Dogwood Trail, Southern Shores, on Sunday, July 20, 2003 at 1:00 pm.

Faith Reeves

KILL DEVIL HILLS, NC - FAITH ELIZABETH REEVES, infant daughter of Jennifer Marie Haskins and Shawn Reeves of Kill Devil Hills, died Wednesday, March 10, 2004 at the Outer Banks Hospital in Nags Head.

Besides her parents, Faith Elizabeth is survived by a sister, Sara Marie Reeves of Kill Devil Hills, NC; Maternal Grandmother, Michelle Flanders of Spartanburg, SC; Paternal Grandmother, Pamela Reeves of Kill Devil Hills, NC and Paternal Great-grandmother, Beverly Morgan of Groton, CT. She was preceded in death by a sister, Danielle Nicole Haskins.

Funeral services will be held at Twiford’s Colony Chapel, Manteo on Sunday, March 14, 2004 at 3:00 pm with Rev. Bob Pitsch officiating. Burial will follow in Laurel Memorial Gardens in Currituck. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday evening from 7:00 to 8:30 pm and a other times at the home of Sandy Olah, 913 S. Virginia Dare Trail, Apt. 202, Kill Devil Hills. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made toward funeral expenses c/o Twiford Funeral Home, POB 595, Manteo, NC 27954.

Mary Temple Reid

Mary Temple Reid, 82, of 465 Gumbridge Road, Elizabeth City, NC died Tuesday, June 24, 2003, in the Guardian Care Nursing Home. She was born in Pasquotank County, NC to the late Johnnie E. and Beulah Forbes Temple and was the widow of the late George Alonzo Reid. Mrs. Reid was a former employee with the J. C. Penny Co. and Belks as a salesperson, a member of the Newbegun United Methodist Church, U. M W., the Weeksville Lion Club Auxiliary and the Marcia Albertson Club.

She is survived by two daughters, Scarlett Newbern and husband, Will, of Elizabeth City, NC and Mary Bessie Ward of Gulfport, MS; one son, George Alonzo Reid, Jr. and wife, Sharon, of Phoenix, AZ.; a sister, Pallie Mae Harris of Elizabeth City, NC; seven grandchildren, Sonja Hodges, Clay Hodges, Scott Newbern, Dwayne Ward, Patrick Reid, George Reid 111, and Denise Thomas, and two great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Darwin Temple, Tommie F. Temple, Bailey Temple and Owen Burnham.

Funeral services will be conducted Friday, June 27, 2003, at 2:00pm in the Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church Street, Elizabeth City by Rev. Toni Wood. Burial will be in the West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will greet friends and relatives in the lobby of the funeral home immediately following the chapel services and at other times at the residence of her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Will Newbern, 475 Gumbridge Road, Elizabeth City. The family suggests memorial gifts may be made to the Newbegun United Methodist Church, 2117 Nixonton Road, Elizabeth City, NC 27909.

Emily Reid

EMILY MAUDE PRITCHARD REID, 88, of Elizabeth City, NC, died Sunday morning, September 12, 2004, in the Albemarle Hospital. She was a native of Pasquotank County, daughter of the late Percy A. and Mrs. Mary Brite Pritchard, and the widow of Wilson Edward “Joe” Reid. Mrs. Reid was a member of Corinth Baptist Church.

She is survived by two daughters, Mary Jo Blake and husband Jerry, of Shelby, NC, and Billie Anne Winslow and husband Jimmie, of Elizabeth City, NC, one son, Wilson E. Reid Jr., of Edenton, NC; one sister, Janice Seymour of Camden, NC; one brother, Dr. William F. Pritchard of Greenville, NC; nine grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. Mrs. Reid was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law Susanne Reid.

Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday afternoon, September 14, 2004, at 2:00 o’clock in the Corinth Baptist Church by Dr. Roy Head. A private burial will follow in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Anyone wishing to, may make memorial gifts to Corinth Baptist Church Building Fund, 1035 US 17 South, Elizabeth City, NC, 27909, and the family will be receiving friends at the residence. PEARL RIGGS RHODES
Camden County, NC native

Pearl Riggs Rhodes, 88, of 8609 Swarthmore Dr., Raleigh, NC and formerly of Cypress St., Elizabeth City, NC died Tuesday, September 21, 2004, at Blue Ridge Health Care Center, Raleigh. She was born in Camden County, NC to the late Jonathan Riggs and Pattie Sawyer Riggs.

She is survived by a son, Cecil Rhodes and wife, Lucy, of Raleigh, NC, a sister, Bertie Forbes of Elizabeth City; two grandchildren, David Rhodes of Raleigh, NC and Michelle R. Lammon of Apex, NC. She is also survived by her niece Elsie Norfleet and Elsie’s children William Lloyd Norfleet and Lillian Dawn Smithson of Elizabeth City.

Graveside services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 26, 2004 at West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery, Elizabeth City, NC, with the Rev. F. Joe Griffith officiating. Twiford Funeral Home, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, NC is assisting the Rhodes family.

The family will be at the home of Elsie Norfleet on 1172 Toxey Road, Elizabeth City, NC.

Georgia Heath Rhodes
Elizabeth City Native

Mrs. Georgia Heath Rhodes, age 92, of 429 South Hughes Boulevard, Elizabeth City, NC, died Monday, February 16, 2004, at Winslow Memorial Nursing Home. Mrs. Rhodes, a native of Pasquotank County, was the widow of Robert Everett Rhodes, Sr., and the daughter of the late Curtis Lee Heath and Rosa Mae Meads Heath. She was a former manager of Rhodes Confectionery, a long time member of First United Methodist Church, the Elizabeth City Chapter of the Order of The Easter Star, and a volunteer with the Albemarle Hospital Auxiliary.

Mrs. Rhodes is survived by two sons, the Rev. Robert E. Rhodes, Jr., and wife Nancy, of Wolcott, CT, and David L. Rhodes, and his fiancé Joanne Blayman, of Chapel Hill, NC, and Santa Fe, NM, three grandchildren, Ann E. Petzold, Carol E. Haslun, and David Robert Rhodes; two step-granddaughters, Tina Mennillo and Kelly Domondon; and four great grandchildren; and five step great grandchildren. She was predeceased by two brothers, Aubrey Heath and Curtis Lee Heath, Jr.

Funeral services will be Thursday, February 19, 2004, at 11:00 AM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, with the Rev. Robert E. Rhodes, Jr., officiating. Burial will follow in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7:00 to 8:30 PM at the funeral home and in the Asbury Room of First United Methodist Church following the services.

Terrye Riddell

KILL DEVIL HILLS, NC - TERRYE ANN PHILLIPS RIDDELL, 46, of Kill Devil Hills, NC died Thursday, July 8, 2004 at the Outer Banks Hospital, Nags Head, NC. Ms. Riddell was born in Natrona Heights, PA and was a Real Estate Agent. She was the daughter of the late Harold Ray and Helen Mary Shremshock Phillips.

Ms. Riddell is survived by a sister, Susan Kirkwood of Falling Waters, WV and a brother, William H. Phillips of Pittsburgh, PA.

A memorial service will be held in Pennsylvania at a later date.

Floyd Earl Riddick
Retired Welder

Floyd Earl Riddick, age 58, of 211 Lazy Days Trail, Hertford, NC, died Friday, January 17, 2003, at the Albemarle Hospital. Mr. Riddick, a native of Pasquotank County, was the husband of Cora Staples Riddick of the residence and the son of the late Floyd Ephriam Riddick and Maggie Godfrey Riddick. He was a member of Camden Church of Christ and a retired machine shop welder.

Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, Brian Riddick of Hertford, NC; a sister, Joanne Smith of Edgewater, FL; two grandchildren, Brianne Riddick and Bryson Riddick. He was predeceased by a son, Duane Earl Riddick and a sister, Evelyn Green.

A graveside funeral service will be Monday, January 20, 2003, at 11:00 AM at Memory Gardens Cemetery with the Rev. Roland Cooper officiating. The family will receive friends at the residence.
