Benjamin Rider

Kill Devil Hills, NC - Benjamin Franklin Rider, 64, of 312 Sir Chandler Dr., Kill Devil Hills, NC, died Sunday, May 2, 2004 at his residence. He was born in Athelston, AR to the late Daniel Boone and Mary Marie Brewer Rider. He was a retired agent with C.I.A., a veteran of the U.S. Army, and a charter member of the BAD EMS Golf Association.

Mr. Rider is survived by two daughters, Kathy Marie Bernard and ex husband Dave of Giathersburg, MD and Debra Lynn Rider-Cadle and husband Greg of Waretown, NJ; one son, Benjamin Logan Rider and wife Jennifer of Giathersburg, MD; three sisters, Louise Weiss of New york, Mettie Copes of Louisiana, and La Ruth Rider of Arkansas; five brothers, J.D. Rider of Texas, Doug Rider of Louisiana, Chuck Rider of Oklahoma, George Rider of Texas, and Jimmy Rider of Mississippi; five grandchildren, Matthew, Christopher, Justin, Alex, and Jordy; and his ex-wife, Susan Rider of Kill Devil Hills.

A funeral service will be conducted on Wednesday, May 5, 2004 at 11:00 AM at Twiford’s Colony Chapel by the Rev. Douglas Rider. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service on Wednesday. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Dare Home Health and Hospice, P.O. Box 1000, Manteo, NC 27954 or to the American Cancer Society, 930 B Wellness Dr., Greenville, NC 27834.

Stanley Riker

Sanibel, FL - Stanley Lambert Riker, age 85, died in Sanibel, Florida on February 24. Born in Montclair, NJ, he was the owner of M&S; Auto Parts. He was a member of the Duck Volunteer Fire Department, The Bayberry Bluffs Homeowners Association and Holy Redeemer parish. He served as a navigator in World War II and became a member of the Hump Pilot’s Association. His parents, Joe and Jeanette Riker, have preceded him in death as has his beloved wife, Ruth.

He is survived by his son, Dennis; his daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen and Richard Rodgers; grandchildren, Michelle, Melinda, Matt, Mark and Kay; great-grandchildren, Nick, Isaac, Haylee, Brendan and Noah and sisters, Lorraine Sauter and June Hageman.

Memorial Services will be held at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Kitty Hawk, NC on Saturday, March 6th at 11:00 AM. Memorial contributions can be made in his name to the Duck Volunteer Fire Department, 1259 Duck Road, Duck, NC 27949.

DIXIE FOREHAND ROACH
Native of Camden County, NC

Dixie Forehand Roach, 84, formerly of Fearing Ave, Elizabeth City, NC died Monday, October 06, 2003, in the Albemarle Hospital. She was born in South Mills, NC to the late John C. and Addie Sawyer Forehand and was the widow of the late Irvin C. Roach. Mrs. Roach was a member of McBride United Methodist Church and the V. F. W. Ladies Auxiliary. She retired as office manager after 30 years with W. T. Grant, Co. and 10 years with Roses.

Mrs. Roach is survived by two sons, Richard House and wife, Priscilla, of South Mills, NC and Orville House and wife, Ethel, of Stevensville, MD; four grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at Twiford Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church Street, Elizabeth City, Thursday, October 9, 2003, at 2:00pm by Rev. Jim Krepps. Burial will be in the Memory Gardens Cemetery. Twiford Funeral Home is in charge of funeral arrangements. The family will receive friends and relatives in the lobby of the funeral home immediately following the chapel service and at other times at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Richard House, 185 Carolina Road, South Mills, NC.

Frances F. Poyner

Frances Miriam Fulton Poyner, age 52 of 1116 Perquimans Ave, Elizabeth City, NC died Wednesday, August 20, 2003 at Albemarle Hospital. Mrs. Poyner was born in Norfolk, VA; daughter of the late Robert Bose and Margaret Decker Fulton and was the wife of Andrew N. Poyner of the residence. She was a retired insurance agent.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Poyner is survived by two sisters, Lorraine Day and husband, Rodney, of Norfolk, VA and Laura Nole of Virginia Beach, VA; a step-mother, Janie V. Fulton of Norfolk VA and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be conducted on Saturday, August 23, 2003 at 10:00 AM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, NC with Father Jim Buchholz officiating. The family will receive friends in the lobby of the funeral home immediately following the service.

Audree Pratt

Duck, NC - Audree Webb Pratt died February 14, 2004 at the age of 94. She had lived the past two years in Duck, NC with her son Charlie and his wife Peggy. She was born September 22, 1909 to Audrey Kilmer Webb and John Webb in Erwin, TN. Her parents, five sisters and one brother and her husband, Jack L. Pratt predeceased her. In addition to her son and daughter-in-law, Mrs. Pratt is survived by her grandson, Charlie Pratt, Jr., and his wife, Lydia, and their children, Ryan, Joshua, and Susana, of Novi, MI and her granddaughter, Carolynne Adams, her husband Garth and their children, Jonathan, Michael, and Katelynne of Sykesville, MD.

Mrs. Pratt started teaching just after graduating from high school. She continued to teach and attend college. She received her BA in 1954 and her MA in 1960 from East Tennessee State University. Through the years, Mrs. Pratt taught in everything from a one room school to the high school in Unicoi County, TN. She retired as a guidance counselor in 1974.

Mrs. Pratt moved in 1980 to Virginia Beach to be near her son and then moved with him and his wife to Duck in 2001. She was an avid reader of mysteries and worked crossword puzzles until the age of 93. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, February 20, at Duck United Methodist Church, officiated by the Rev. David Clift.

Acie Mayo Price

Elizabeth City, NC - Acie Mayo Price, Sr., age 85, of 1948 North Road Street, Elizabeth City, NC, died Sunday, September 7, 2003, in Guardian Care Nursing Home. He was born in Pasquotank County son of the late James Acie, and Mettie Melissa Divers Price, and was the husband of Virginia Jones Price of the residence. Mr. Price served in the US Army Air Force and was a retired boilermaker with the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, and a member of First Christian Church.

Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Melba VanDalsum and Robin Stallings of Elizabeth City, NC; two sons James Price of Elizabeth City, NC, and Acie Mayo Price, Jr. of Edenton, NC, six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be Wednesday, September 10, 2003 at 11:00 AM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in New Hollywood Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday, September, 10, 2003 from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm and following the service in the lobby of the funeral home. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Talmadge Best

BELHAVEN, NC - TALMADGE WAYNE BEST, 73, of Belhaven, NC died Friday, June 11, 2004 at Duke University Hospital, Durham, NC. Mr. Best, born in Stumpy Point, NC, was retired from Dare County Public Works and was a former Commercial Fisherman and wholesale seafood dealer. He was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Marine Corp during the Korean Conflict and was a member of the Williamston Memorial Baptist Church.

He was the son of the late Alton W. and Ruby Gibbs Best and was also preceded in death by a son, Mark Best.

Mr. Best is survived by his wife, Margaret “Marge” Bruce Best of the residence; a daughter, Susie Best White and husband, Stan of Nags Head, NC; a son, Jeffery D. Best and wife, Terry of Belhaven, NC; three grandchildren, John White and wife, Sara, Kristen Minshew and husband, Mark, and Emily Best.

A Memorial service will be held at Shiloh United Methodist Church, Stumpy Point, on Sunday, June 13, 2004 at 3:00 pm with Rev. Tom Clark and Rev. Tom Jennings officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Shiloh United Methodist Church, POB 37, Stumpy Point, NC 27978, or the charity of one’s choice.

Horace F. Pritchard
Pasquotank County Native

Horace Frank Pritchard, age 81, of 2048 North Road Street, Elizabeth City, NC, died Saturday, April 12, 2003, at the Albemarle Hospital. Mr. Pritchard, a lifelong native of Pasquotank County, NC, was the husband of Sadie Meads Pritchard of the residence and the son of Sobelia Tuttle Pritchard Davis of Elizabeth City, NC, and the late Charlie McMullen Pritchard. He was a member of Berea Baptist Church and a retired farmer.

Besides his wife and mother he is survived by a son, Horace C. Pritchard and wife Donna of Elizabeth City, NC; three sisters, Edna Payne and husband Robert, Gearldean Thompson and husband Billy, and Margaret Ann Mickey and husband Ernest all of Elizabeth City, NC; a brother, Elvin Pritchard of Las Vegas, NV; three grandchildren, H. C. Pritchard, Jr., Traci Mitchell and husband Edgar all of Elizabeth City, NC, and Kelly Winslow and husband Kevin of Corapeake, NC; and one great grand daughter, Hannah Lynn Mitchell.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, April 15, 2003, at 1:00 PM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Roger Stanley officiating. Burial will follow in New Hollywood Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday from 7:00 to 8:30 PM at the funeral home and at other times at the residence. Maggie Jones Pritchard

MAGGIE JONES PRITCHARD, 95 of Elizabeth City NC died Tuesday night in Guardian Care. She had retired from the Telephone Company and was a member of Corinth Baptist Church. Mrs. Pritchard was daughter of the late Joseph Franklin and Mrs. Lena Spence Jones and the widow of Willis W. Pritchard.

She is survived by nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, July 10, 2003 at 4:00 PM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church St. by Rev. F. Joe Griffith. Burial will follow in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the lobby of the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to Corinth Baptist Church, 1035 US 17 South, Elizabeth City, NC 27909. Arlene B. Pritchard

Arlene Baines Pritchard, age 77, of 882 Wellfield Road, Elizabeth City, NC died Tuesday, October 21, 2003, at her residence. Mrs. Pritchard was a native of Pasquotank County, the widow of Harold Pritchard, Sr., and the daughter of Arthur Paul and Jessie Keaton Baines. She was a retired employee of Belks, a member and former church organist of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

Mrs. Pritchard is survived by one daughter, Elaine Pritchard, of the home; three sons, Harold Pritchard, Jr. and his wife, Joanne; Michael Pritchard; and David Lee Pritchard, and his wife, Joy, all of Elizabeth City, NC; six grandchildren, Craig Pritchard, Mark Pritchard, Scott Pritchard, Matt Pritchard, Paul Pritchard and Laura Pritchard; and two great-grandchildren, Jacob Pritchard and Avery Pritchard. In addition, she is survived by a sister, Iris B. Blevins of Mountain City, Tennessee, and a brother, Lester K. Baines of Elizabeth City, NC.

Funeral services will be Friday, October 24, 2003, at 11 a.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, with Elder Bill Ricks officiating. Burial will be in the Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive family and friends immediately following the service in the Church Cultural Hall and at other times at the residence.

Doris Pritchard

Elizabeth City, NC - Mrs. Doris Elizabeth Hopkins Pritchard, age 88, died Tuesday, March 16, 2004, at Guardian Care Nursing Home which was her residence for the last year. She was born August 28, 1915 in Pasquotank County, NC, and was the daughter of the late Fenner Benjamin Hopkins and Lillian Twiford Hopkins.

Doris married icon Rufus Davis Pritchard on March 6, 1938. She grew up in Elizabeth City and was a faithful member of First United Methodist Church, the Ladies’ Bible Class and United Methodist Women. She was a fifty-year member of the Elizabeth City Chapter #44 Order of the Eastern Star. During her early marriage she worked in the office of Dr. Frank Selig and later in her life she was employed by the Albemarle Hospital. She has left a legacy of great kindness; her smile and gentleness have touched many.

Doris is survived by a daughter, Dianne Pritchard McDowell and husband, William Patton McDowell, III, of Elizabeth City, NC; a son, Rufus Davis Pritchard, Jr., and wife, Roxie Farrow Pritchard, of Manteo, NC; seven grandchildren, William Patton McDowell, IV, and wife, Cindy Pinkston McDowell of Charlotte, NC, Benjamin Kelly McDowell of Houston, TX, Elizabeth McDowell Smith and husband, Kevin Andrew Smith of Summit, NJ, Bryan Lane McDowell and wife, Katie Michaels McDowell of Atlanta, GA, Rufus Davis Pritchard, III, of Manteo, NC, Charles Patrick Pritchard of Atlanta, GA, and Sarah Blake Pritchard of Chapel Hill, NC; five great grandchildren, Katherine “Katie” Elizabeth McDowell, Lauren Weeks McDowell, William Parker McDowell, Andrew McDowell “Mac” Smith, and Lillian “Lilli” Alexandra Smith; a sister-in-law, Margie Hardison Hopkins of Elizabeth City, NC; several nieces and nephews; and devoted friends, Shirley Ferebee and Janie Thomas. She was predeceased by two sisters, Camilla Hopkins Rector and Maxine Hopkins Lane; and her brother Fenner Benjamin Hopkins, Jr.

A family graveside service will be held at 4:00 PM, Wednesday, March 17, 2004 at West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. David Mohering officiating. The family will receive friends at the residence of the daughter, Mr. & Mrs. Pat McDowell, 1701 Parkview Drive, Elizabeth City, NC following the funeral service. In Lieu of flowers, the family suggests a memorial gift to First United Methodist Church, PO Box 401, Elizabeth City, NC 27909 or one’s favorite charity.

R. Harold Pritchard, Sr.

Elizabeth City, NC - Raymond Harold Pritchard, Sr., age 79, of 882 Wellfield Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died Saturday, April 5, 2003 at Winslow Memorial Home in Elizabeth City, NC. Born in Pasquotank County, he was the son of the late Raymond D. and Bessie Lee Pritchard Pritchard, and was the loving husband of fifty seven years of Arlene Baines Pritchard of the residence. He was a veteran of the US Army having served during WWII. He was a retired farmer and carpenter, and a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter - Day Saints.

Besides his wife, Mr. Pritchard is survived by: one daughter, Elaine Pritchard; three sons Harold Pritchard, Jr., Michael Pritchard, and David Pritchard all of Elizabeth City NC; six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter - Day Saints in Elizabeth City, by Bishop Robert Garrett on Tuesday, April 8, 2003, at 2:00 PM. Burial will follow at Westlawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the Cultural Hall of the Church immediately following the service and all other times at the residence.

Elizabeth Pugh

ELIZABETH IREDELL PUGH, 85 of 177 Alder Branch Road, Shiloh NC died Saturday May 31, 2003 in the Albemarle Hospital. She was a native of Camden County daughter of the late John and Penny Jones Wilson. Mrs. Pugh was the widow of Ferebee Burgess Pugh. She was formerly employed with Avon and the Daily Advance, a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church in Old Trap and the Home Demonstration Club.

She is survived by three daughters Edith Pratt and her husband Gene, Jeanette Spencer and her husband Jackie both of Shiloh NC and Beatrice Trueblood of Elizabeth City NC. One step son Donald Pugh of Elizabeth City NC. Five grandchildren, Tony Pratt, Tim and Kevin Cartwright, Mike Spencer, Jenee Eubanks and eight great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday afternoon June 4, 2003 at 2:00 o’clock in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, Church St. Elizabeth City NC by Rev. Eugene McLawhorn. Burial will follow in Westlawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening at the Funeral Home from 7:00 until 8:00 and other times at the residence of Mr and Mrs. Kevin Cartwright 177 Alder Branch Road in Shiloh NC.

Aaliyah McClease

Elizabeth City, NC - Aaliyah Marie McClease, infant daughter of Derek Emil McClease and Billie Jo Luton, died Tuesday, May 25, 2004, in the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters.

Besides her parents she is survived by a twin sister, Aalyssah Shea McClease of the home. She is also survived by maternal grandparents, Steve and Jean McDaniels of Elizabeth City, NC; maternal grandfather, Bill Luton of Elizabeth City, NC; Paternal grandmother, Tavia Newell of Newark, NJ; paternal grandfather, Dennis McClease of Newark, NJ; great maternal grandmothers, Evelyn Luton and Margueritte Walker both of Elizabeth City, NC; great grandparents, Tom and Aileen McDaniels of Elizabeth City, NC; great paternal grandmother, Daisy Newell of NJ.

A graveside service will be Saturday, May 29, 2004, at 10:00 AM in West Lawn Cemetery with the Rev. John Luton officiating. The family will be at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Steve McDaniels, 705 Oak Stump Road, Elizabeth City, NC. Twiford Funeral Home, 405 E. Anne P. Pugh

St. Petersburg, FL - Anne P. Pugh, 79, of Seminole, died Thursday, January 22, 2004 at Northside Hospital and Heart Institute. Born in Elizabeth City, NC, she moved to St. Petersburg in 1961 from West Islip, NY. She was an accounts payable clerk for Florida Power Corp. for 10 years. She was a member of North East Park Baptist church.

Survivors include a daughter, Christie Lynn Halstead of Greenville, NC; three sons, Randy B. Glendale of California, H. Craig of Pinellas Park, FL and Dale R. of Orlando, FL; five grandchildren, Lindsay and Leslie of Greenville, NC, C.J., Casey and Charlie Pugh of Pinellas Park, FL.

A graveside service will be held this Saturday, January 31, 2004 at 4:00 PM at Austin Cemetery with Rev. Richard Stone officiating.

Blondell T. Pulley
Fork, SC native

Blondell Taylor Pulley, age 74, of 714 Briarwood Avenue, Elizabeth City, NC, died Monday, October 14, 2002, at the Albemarle Hospital. Mrs. Pulley was a native of Fork, SC, the daughter of the late Wiliam Paul Taylor and Amy Huggins Taylor, the wife of Charles Adolph Pulley, Jr. of the residence. She was a member of Corinth Baptist Church.

Besides her husband, she is survived by two sons, Charles “Chuck” Pulley, III, of Point Harbor, NC, and William David Pulley of Elizabeth City, NC; a brother, Mitchell Taylor of Lumberton, NC; two grandchildren; and one great grandchild.

A graveside funeral service will be Friday, October 18, 2002 at 11:00 AM at West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. Roy Head officiating. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 7:00 to 8:30 PM and at other times at the residence. Fred Everet Quance
Native of Spencerville, IN

Fred Everet Quance, age 93, of 1189 Weeksville Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died Wednesday, March 10, 2004 in Winslow Memorial Nursing Home. He was born in Spencerville, IN, son of the late Orson Quance and Melvina Dickerson. He was the husband of the late Erthenia Graham Quance. Mr. Quance was a member of New Begun United Methodist Church and retired from Chief Quality Control Department with the Rieke Corporation, Auburn IN. He was a member of the DeKalb Lodge #214 F.&A.M.; in Auburn, IN, and a senior life member of the Scottish Rites Masons Valley of Fort Wayne, IN. Since 1938 he has been a member of Lions International, and served as District Governor of 25B in IN, and was a recipient of the Melvin Jones Award, and life member of the Weeksville Lions Club, and a member of Elizabeth City Shrine Club. Mr. Quance was a volunteer at the Albemarle Hospital.

He is survived by one daughter, Sandra Q. Lawhead and her husband Atlee of Las Vegas, NV; two sons, Fred G. Quance and his wife Sharon of Loudon, TN, and Thomas P. Quance and his wife Christi of Elizabeth City, NC; seven grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be Saturday, March 13, 2004 in Riverside United Methodist Church at 5:00 PM with the Rev. John Dutton and Rev. Bill Otis. The family will receive friends following the memorial service at the church. At other times the family will be at the residence of Thomas Quance, 1189 Weeksville Road, Elizabeth City, NC. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Weeksville Lions Club Building Fund, 105 Lula Meads Road, Elizabeth City, NC 27909, or to the Riverside United Methodist Church Building Fund, 1400 Edgewood Drive, Elizabeth City, NC 27909. Patsy Quidley

BUXTON, NC - PATSY HUN QUIDLEY, 55, of Buxton, died Friday, October 31, 2003, in her residence. Mrs. Quidley was born in Honolulu, Hawaii and was co-owner of Sonny’s Waterside Restaurant and Quidley Trailer Park. She was a member of Lighthouse Assembly of God.

Mrs. Quidley was the daughter of the late Francis and Soonae Parks Hun and the wife of the late William S. “Sonny” Quidley, Jr.

Surviving are two daughters: Babette Q. Ebert of Buxton and LeeAnn Quidley Canning of Hatteras, two sons; William S. “Sonny” Quidley, III and Jonathan Walter Charles Quidley both of Buxton, two sisters; Lily Cabinatan of Wainae, Hi, and Stephanie Kinohi of Honolulu, Hi, one brother; Francis Hun of Wainae, Hi, devoted friend Donna Swain of Frisco and four grandchildren; Cutler Hayden Ebert, Jasmine Leilani Quidley, John Patrick Canning, III and Kaleigh Ella Canning.

A Celebration of Life will be held in Lighthouse Assembly of God, Wednesday, November 5, 2003, at 2:00 p.m. by Rev. David Waterfield. Burial will be in the Quidley Family Cemetery in Buxton. Friends may join the family at the home of her son W. S. “Sonny” Quidley in Buxton. Mrs. Quidley will be placed in the church for viewing on Monday. Twiford’s Island Chapel Hatteras is assisting the Quidley family.
