Margaret "Peggy" Ragen

Margaret “Peggy” Morgan Ragen, age 52, of 271 East Hwy. 158. Camden, NC, died Saturday, March 27, 2004 at the Albemarle Hospital, in Elizabeth City, NC. A native of Pasquotank County, she was the daughter of the late Wilbert E. and Elizabeth B. Morgan, and was the wife of Vincent Ragen of the residence. Mrs. Ragen worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant 2 in Adult Day Care.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Ragen is survived by: three sisters, Debra M. Trueblood and Brenda M. Gray, both of Elizabeth City, NC, and Sandra Daniel of Glade Water, TX; one brother Robert Morgan of FL; three nieces, Kimberly T. Solesbee of Elizabeth City, NC, Tiffany M. Baker of FL, and Erica Gray, of Elizabeth City, NC; one nephew Jack D. Trueblood III, of Hertford, NC; and three great nephews, Anthony Lane, Ethan Solesbee, and Zakary Solesbee.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, March 31, 2004, at 4:00 PM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street with Rev.Alan Gibson officiating. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 7:00 to 8:00 PM at the funeral home, and immediately after the service on Wednesday. At other times they will be at the residence. The family suggests memorial donations be made to the Epilepsy Foundation of NC, P.O. Box 58787, Raleigh, NC 27658.

Margaret Ragen

George Edward Phibrick

Elizabeth City, NC - George Edward Philbrick, age 62, of 1901 Ulster Drive, Elizabeth City, NC, died Saturday, October 12, 2002 in Albemarle Hospital. He was born in Providence, RI, son of the late Joseph Edward and Winfred Goff Philbrick, and was the husband of Judith James Philbrick of the residence. He was in the United States Coast Guard, a member of the USCG Auxiliary and a member of the Madison Marine Patrol of Connecticut.

Besides his wife, Mr. Philbrick is survived by a daughter Susan V. Philbrick of Virginia Beach, VA, a son William E. Philbrick of Clinton, CT, a sister Barbara Carey of Hockessin, DE, and an uncle, George A. Philbrick of Palm Bay, FL.

Private memorial services will be conducted at a later date. The family requests that memorial donations be made to the American Kidney Association, 6110 Executive Blvd., Suite 1010, Rockville, MD 20852 or the charity of one’s choice.

Samuel Irving Phillips

Elizabeth City - Samuel “Sam” Phillips, age 88, of 117 Casey Street, Elizabeth City, NC, died Wednesday, April 2, 2003, at Chowan Hospital. Mr. Phillips, a native of Perquimans County, NC, was the husband of Lina Belle Cartwright Phillips of the residence and the son of the late Samuel Clarence Phillips and Mary White Phillips. He was a furniture salesman, the owner and operator of Sam’s Bargain Store, a US Army veteran of WW II, and a member of New Life Assembly of God Church.

Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Mary P. and Thomas Dornfried of Hertford, NC, Sue and Gary Michael of Elizabeth City, NC; one son and his wife, Dr. Richard and Mary Phillips of Big Stone Gap, VA: a sister, Nina Maude White of Edenton, NC; and five grandchildren, Gary Michael, Jr., Jennifer Michael, John Dornfried, Andrew Dornfried, and Martha Phillips.

A funeral service will be Saturday, April 5, 2003, at 11:00 AM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Clay Manos and the Rev. Bobby Armstrong officiating. Burial will be in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:30 PM Friday at the funeral home, immediately after the service in the funeral home lobby, and at other times at the residence.

Lois Evelyn Karr Phillips
Formerly of Greensboro, NC

Lois Evelyn Karr Phillips, age 89, of Carolina Living, Elizabeth City, NC, died Friday, August 15, 2003, at the Albemarle Hospital. Mrs. Phillips was a native of Chicago, IL, and a former resident of Greensboro, NC. She was the widow of Randolph Phillips, Sr., and the daughter of the late Louis Henry Karr and Evelyn May Smith Karr. She taught piano for 68 years, was a church organist for 59 years and a church choir director.

Mrs. Phillips is survived by a son, Randolph “Randy” Phillips, Jr., and his wife Marcia, of Elizabeth City, NC; two grandchildren, John Phillips and wife Sarah, of Wilmington, NC, and Marcia “Marcy” Phillips of Rocky Mount, NC; two great grandchildren, Peyton and Patrick Phillips both of Wilmington, NC.

A memorial service will be Tuesday, August 19, 2003, at 4:00 PM at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Clyde Denny officiating. A graveside service will be Saturday, August 23, at Lakeview Memorial Park Cemetery, Greensboro, NC. The family will receive friends in the Asbury Room of the church immediately following the service and at other times at the residence of the son, Mr. & Mrs. Randy Phillips, 603 Laura Lee Street, Elizabeth City, NC. Joann Phillips

Moyock, NC - Joann Phillips, formerly of Virginia Beach, passed away peacefully in her home on July 16, 2004, surrounded by her loving family. Joann was born in the mountains of West Virginia and she always considered those mountains to be her home. She had a tremendous love for nature which she instilled deeply in all five of her children. Joann was an avid reader, consuming five or more books a week throughout her entire life. Her love for the written word afforded her an education no school could ever possibly offer. In her thirties she embarked on a very successful career in sales. She quickly became the top salesperson for both Rice’s Nachmans, and Avon.

Joann was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Charles A. Phillips, and her son Joseph H. Phillips, as well as by her brother, Clarence “Junior” Haddix. She leaves behind her four loving children, three grandchildren and her four loving and wonderful sisters, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Joann will be remembered for her sharp wit and her wonderful sense of humor.

She will be buried at Baltimore National Cemetery beside her beloved husband, as well as her son, Joey. Joann’s life was about love for friends and family, and she will never be forgotten by those of us who were blessed to have known her. May she rest in the loving arms of the source from which all life springs, and to which all life returns, eternally peaceful, and where the springs of love and forgiveness runneth over.

Milton Elliss Phthisic, Sr.

Elizabeth City, NC - Milton Elliss Phthisic, Sr., 68, died at his residence, 126 Ranch Drive, on October 29, 2002. Born in Perquimans County, he was the son of the late Wilbur M. and Dorothy Cartwright Phthisic, formerly of Belvidere, NC and was a retired truck driver.

Mr. Phthisic is survived by his wife of 38 years, Lynda Davis Phthisic, and four sons; Milton E. Phthisic, Jr. of Belvidere, NC, Ricky L. Phthisic, David Michael Phthisic, and Steven E. Phthisic, all of Elizabeth City, NC. He was a loving grandfather, survived by 12 grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. Other survivers include a brother, Johnnie Phthisic of Belvidere, NC, and two sisters Doris Hollowell of Hobbsville, NC, and Faye Proctor of Hertford, NC . He was predeceased by a grandchild.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, November 2, 2002 in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel at 1:00 PM with Pastor Scott Neal officiating. Burial will follow in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will be at the home of his son, Michael Phthisic at 2504 Red Gate Drive, Elizabeth City, NC. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Curtis Wilbert Pierce

Curtis Wilbert Pierce, age 88, of 1147 North 343, South Mills, NC died Sunday, December 8, 2002 at his residence. He was born in Old Trap, NC, son of the late Benjamin F. and Lydia Forbes Pierce and the husband of Aline Sawyer Pierce of the residence. Mr. Pierce attended New Beginnings Assembly of God and was an equipment operator for the City of Portsmouth.

Beside his wife, Mr. Pierce is survived by a daughter, Kay P. Banks and husband James A. of South Mills, NC; a son John D. Pierce of South Mills, NC; a sister Lorrine Forbes of Riddle, NC; five grandchildren, Amy C. Banks, Jason A. Banks, Deena P. Hankins, Tammy P. Cutrell, and Kevin Pierce; and two great grandchildren, Cody Hankins and Jordan Cutrell.

A funeral service will be conducted on Wednesday, December 11, 2002 at 2:00pm with the Rev. Carroll Daniels officiating. Burial will be in the Sawyer Family Cemetery. Following the service the family will receive friends in the lobby of the funeral home and at other times at the residence.

Retired Roses Salesclerk

Sarah Meads Pierce, age 69, of 1815 North Road Street, Elizabeth City, NC, died Tuesday, January 20, 2004, in Elizabeth City, NC. Mrs. Pierce, a native of Pasquotank County, was the wife of George McKinley Pierce of the residence, and the daughter of the late Mack Matthew Meads and Gracie Baines Meads. She was a retired salesclerk from Roses Department Store and a member of Fellowship Baptist Church.

Besides her husband she is survived by two sisters, Emma Meads of Elizabeth City, NC, and Tennie Reid of Burlington, NC; and three brothers, Fred Meads and Jimmy Meads both of Elizabeth City, NC, and Joe Meads, of Hertford, NC.

A funeral service will be Saturday, January 24, 2004, at 11:00 AM with the Rev. Joey Hobbs and the Rev. F. Joe Griffith officiating at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street. Burial will be in New Hollywood Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 7:00 to 8:30 PM at the funeral home and immediately after the service in the lobby of the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the residence of her brother, Mr. & Mrs. Fred Meads, 500 Meadstown Road, Elizabeth City, NC. Memorial donations may be made to Fellowship Baptist Church, 1005 Possum Quarter Road, Elizabeth City, NC 27909.

Pearl Pierce

KILL DEVIL HILLS, NC - PEARL SPAIN PIERCE, 83, of Kill Devil Hills, died Saturday, January 31, 2004, in Nags Head. Mrs. Pierce was born in Colonial Heights, Va and was a homemaker and a graduate of Petersburg High School.

She was the daughter of the late Franklin and Lily Valley Spain and the wife of Warren Grayson Pierce.

Besides her husband surviving are one daughter; Donna Hensley of Jamaica, and one son; Warren G. Pierce of Atlanta, Ga, three grandchildren; Kenny Pierce and wife Karen of Kill Devil Hills, Monica Parker and husband Robbie of Kitty Hawk and Allison Johnson Guthrie and husband Derek of Skyco, eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

A Celebration of life will be held Tuesday, February 3, 2004, at 10:00 a.m. in Twiford’s Colony Chapel by the Rev. David J. Daniels. Burial will be in Blandford Cemetery in Petersburg, Va. Friends may join the family at Twiford’s Funeral Home, Monday, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Twiford’s Colony Chapel Manteo is assisting the Pierce family.

Robert Austin

Hatteras, NC - Robert Lawrence Austin, 85, died Tuesday, May 25, 2004 at Sentara Barco Nursing Home. Mr. Austin was born in Hatteras and was a carpenter. He was a member of the Hatteras Assembly of God Church and a member of the VFW. His military service includes, serving as a SGT with the US Army during WWII. He was a member of the 2nd Ranger Infantry Battalion and participated in the D-Day invasion at Normandy Beach. He was awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. Mr. Austin was the son of the late Henry Bunyan Austin and the late Minerva Wedmore Austin Austin and was the widower of Joyce Busby Austin.

He is survived by one daughter, Jennifer A. Stowe and husband Bill of Raleigh; two sisters, Margaret Bateman of Arapahoe, NC and Wilma Austin of New Bern, NC. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Edna, Elaine and half-sister, Olivia; also preceding him in death are three brothers, Arthur, John Littleton, Wilbur and half-brother, Zach.

A graveside service will be held at the Family Cemetery at 57305 Eagle Pass Road, Hatteras, on Friday, May 28, 2004 at 2:00 Pm with Rev. John Cullop and Rev. Jim Reynolds officiating. The family will receive friends on Thursday at Twiford’s Island Chapel, Hatteras, from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM. The family will be meeting at the home of Monroe Stowe, 57084 Kohler Road, Hatteras, at other times.

Waterlily, NC - GEORGE ALAN “AL” PINTO, 72 husband of Betty Doxey Pinto died in Florida July 25, 2004.

A Memorial service will be conducted Saturday August 21, 2004 at 3:00 o’clock In the Hampton Cemetery, Waterlily NC. The family will receive friends at the Cemetery following the service. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel 405 East Church St. Elizabeth City NC is in charge of arrangements.

Darkes Brickhouse Key
Native of Danville, VA

DARKES BRICKHOUSE KEY, 82 of Elizabeth City, NC, died Monday morning in Heritage Care. She was a native of Danville, VA, and the daughter of the late Isiah and Samantha Brickhouse and the widow of Joe James Key. Mrs. Key had formerly worked with Burlington Industries.

She is survived by two daughters, Doris Tadlock of Elizabeth City, NC, and Christine Key of Goldsboro, NC; two sons, James Key and Linwood Key both of Elizabeth City, NC; ten grandchildren, Theresa Weatherly, Jeffrey Powers, Ricky Powers, James Kevin Key, Richard Key, Wanda Tadlock, Faye Burgess, Mary Soria, Cheryl Haigler, and Karen Roache; twelve great grandchildren, Ricky Powers, Jr., Devin Weatherly, Lynn Stokley, Chrystal Powers, Tracy Burgess, Robert Barnes, Jr., Heather Santacroce, Dawn Santacroce, Becky Soria, Ryan Soria, Brittany Key, and Tary Key; four great great grandchildren, Devin Cornelius, Tyler Barnes, Katelyn Stokly, and Grace Stokly.

Graveside services will be conducted Thursday morning, January 29, 2004 at 11:00 o’clock in Highland Park Cemetery by the Rev. Roland Cooper. The family will receive friends at 812 Wilson Street, Elizabeth City, NC. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, is in charge of arrange-ments.

John Piotrowski

Elizabeth City, NC - John Anthony Piotrowski, age 77, of 104 Dana Street, Moyock, NC, died Thursday, February 19, 2004 in Bayside Hospital, Va. Beach, VA. He was born in Michigan City, IN, and was the son the late Ignatius Piotrowski and Martha Banul Piotrowski. He the husband of Ann Pilarski Piotrowski of the residence. He was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church, and the Knights of Columbus where he was a fourth degree Knight. In 1990 he was Knight of the year for the NC council. He was a retired Master Sergeant from the US Army after serving for 26 years. He served during WWII, Korean War, and Viet Nam. He was a recipient of the purple heart.

Besides his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Ann Marie McPherson of Camden, NC, Suzanne Halstead of Va. Beach, VA, Dianne Russell of Knightdale, NC; one son, Pete Piotrowski of Naperville, NC; four sisters, Caroline Bowers, Cecelia Hyska, and Angeline Gregory, all of Michigan City, IN, and Jean Bemis of Terre Haute, IN; one brother, Casimir Piotrowski of Michigan City, IN; twelve grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He was predeceased by one daughter, Patricia Woods.

A funeral service will be conducted Monday, February 23, 2004 at 11:00 AM in the Holy Family Catholic Church with Father Jim Buchholz officiating. Burial will be in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery with Military Honors. A Rosary service will be Sunday evening, 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM at Holy Family Catholic Church. The family will be at the residence at other times. Memorial gifts may be made to the Holy Family Catholic Church, 1453 N. Road Street, Elizabeth City, NC 27909. Sharon Bailey Pipes

Hertford, NC - Sharon Bailey Pipes, age 64, of 217 Cypress Street, Hertford, NC, died Saturday, July 5, 2003 in Chowan Hospital. She was born in Norfolk, VA, daughter of Wyman H. and Anastasia Gavaris Bailey. She was the wife of Judd D. Pipes of Hertford, NC. She was a devoted mother and wife . She loved her husband, she loved her children, and she loved Jesus.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Pipes is survived by six daughters, Leslie Lancaster, Dawn West, Jamie, Laurie, Tracy, and Amy Pipes; five sons, David and Jim Sumrell, Mark Jordan, Rodney Pipes, and Johnny West; two brothers, Wyman H. Bailey, Jr. and George Bailey; sixteen grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, July 9, 2003, at 2:00 PM in Cedarwood Cemetery with the Rev. Stanley Nixon officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home, Tuesday, July 8, 2003 from 7:00 until 8:30 pm. Memorial donations may be made to the American Humane Society. Elizabeth Pipkin

Elizabeth City, NC - Elizabeth Hall Pipkin, age 87, of 707 Bayside Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died Wednesday, August 11, 2004, in Albemarle Hospital. She was a native of Pasquotank County, NC, and was the daughter of the late Paul and Eunice Harris Hall, and was the wife of the late Claude “C.B.” Pipkin. She was an associate with First Citizens Bank, and was a Baptist.

She is survived by a niece, Sybil Hall Baccus of Hertford, NC, a nephew Randy Hall of Elizabeth City, NC, and a sister in law, Valerie Hall of Elizabeth City, NC. She was predeceased by a niece, Sherry Hall White.

A graveside service will be Saturday, August 14, 2004 at 2:00 PM in Old Hollywood Cemetery with the Rev. Tony Klepper officiating. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 7:00PM to 8:00PM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC.

Virginia "Ginks" Pitts

Dallas, TX - Virginia Clyde Lambeth Pitts, 91, died on Saturday, May 22, 2004 at her residence. Mrs. Pitts was born in Okema, OK, was a homemaker and an Episcopalian. She was the daughter of the late Knox Garfield Lambeth and the late Cora Leona Watson and was the widow of Col. Kern Phillips Pitts.

She is survived by two daughters, Toni Smythe of Albuquerque, Mexico, Diane Pitts of Dallas, TX and four grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at Southern Shores Cemetery on Wednesday, June 2, 2004 at 2:00 PM with Taylor Wilson officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Southern Shores Community Fund in memory of Kern and Ginks Pitts, C/O NC Community Foundation, Point Harbor Office, Harbinger Center Suite 4, Point Harbor, NC 27964.

Avon Clinton Pledger

MANTEO, NC - AVON CLINTON PLEDGER, 65, of Manteo, NC died Monday, June 7, 2004 at his residence. Mr. Pledger, a native of Manteo, was retired U.S. Navy, BMC with 20 years of service. After retirement he worked with Civil Service at Portsmouth Naval Base, then briefly as a Merchant Seaman. He attended Haven Creek Baptist Church in Manteo.

Mr. Pledger was the son of Frederick Gray of New London, CT and the late Clara Pledger Hofler of Manteo, NC.

Mr. Pledger is survived by his wife, Dorothy Freeman Pledger of the residence; three daughters, Andrecia Freeman of Virginia Beach, VA, Lajean Bloodworth of Indianapolis, IN, and Doretta Ray of Monroe, NC; three sons, Von Pledger, Jr. of Elizabeth City, NC, Nathaniel Pledger of Kill Devil Hills, NC, and Michael Pledger, U.S. Navy, Virginia Beach, VA; two sisters, Florice Lane Dudley of NC and Fredrica Gray of Hartford, CT; three brothers, Eddie Lee Russell of Goldsboro, NC, Donzell Russell, Jr. of Spruce Pine, NC, and Kenneth Gray of New London, CT; and fourteen grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at Haven Creek Baptist Church, Manteo, on Saturday, June 12, 2004 at 2:00 pm with Rev. L. Griffin officiating. Burial will follow in the Haven Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

Joseph B. Anderson
Retired Police Officer

Joseph B. Anderson, age 77, of Elizabeth City, NC, died Sunday, October 26, 2003 at his residence. He was born in Elizabeth City, NC, son of the late Joseph Whayland and Eva Winslow Anderson and was the husband of Hazel Harris Anderson of the residence. He was a retired police officer for the Elizabeth City Police Department, member of First Christian Church, and Eureka Lodge # 317 AF &AM.;

Besides his wife, Mr. Anderson is survived by a daughter, Jo Ann Anderson Crawford and husband Ray of Richmond, VA; two sons, Benjamin Whayland Anderson and wife Dottie of Elizabeth City, NC, and Michael Gene Anderson and wife Pam of Greenville, NC; two sisters, Myrtle Anderson Crain and Geneva Anderson both of Elizabeth City, NC; and three grandchildren, John Rodney Anderson, Benjamin Seth Anderson, and Kristin Nicole Smith. Mr. Anderson was preceded in death by a sister, Pauline Anderson Brickhouse.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, October 29, 2003 at 11:00 AM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Glenn Brigman officiating. Burial will be in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive family and friends immediately following the service in the lobby of the funeral home and at other times at the residence. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to First Christian Church, 701 Parsonage Street, Elizabeth City, NC 27909 or Albemarle Hospice, P.O. Box 189, Elizabeth City, NC 27907-0189.
