MELODY RUTH SHADD KENT
Native of Florida

Melody Ruth Shadd Kent, 67, of 114 Etheridge Dr., Shawboro, NC died Sunday, August 01, 2004, in the Albemarle Hospital. She was born in MacClenny, Fl. to the late Lonnie Thomas and Bessie Mae Carrin Shadd and was the wife of Roger J. Kent. Mrs. Kent was a member of the St. Katharine Drexel Catholic Church and the Providence Baptist Church and a former choir member. She was a retired hairdresser.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Kent is survived by three daughters, Cheryl S. Johnson of Ft. Worth, TX, Lori L. Byrd of Moyock, NC and Karen K. Jenners and husband, Jim, of Charles Town, WVA; one brother, Grady Allen Shadd of Middleburg, FL; nine grandchildren, Matthew, David, James, Mary, Ernie, Anna Marie, Steven, Sarah, and Luke; three great grandchildren, Marisa, Chase, and Dylan. She was preceded in death by a sister, Irene Odom.

A Celebration of Mrs. Kent’s life will be held Wednesday afternoon, August 4, 2004, at 2:00pm in the St. Katharine Drexel Catholic Church, Maple, NC by Father Jim Buchholz and Rev. Charles Stevens. Burial will follow in the church’s memorial garden. The family will receive friends and relatives Tuesday evening from 6:00 until 8:30pm at their residence, 114 Etheridge Dr., Shawboro. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the St. Katharine Drexel Catholic Church Building Fund, 154 Maple Road, Maple, NC 27956.

Michael Pooler

Michael A. Pooler, 43, went to be with the Lord Sept. 29, 2004. He was a beloved husband and a dedicated father. Michael served as a yeoman chief in the U.S. Navy and served in Operation Iraqi Freedom. He is survived by his loving wife of 17 years, Esther Y. Pooler; daughter, Ashley; son, Michael Jr.; sisters, Faye and Rosene; brothers, Oley and Wayne; a special mother-in-law, Mrs. Willie Mae Gray and father-in-law Charles Gray; three brothers-in-law, three sisters-in-law, two aunts, five uncles, five nephews and three nieces and a host of other relatives and friends. The family will receive friends at Twiford's Colonial Chapel, 929 S. Battlefield Blvd., from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday. A funeral will be held at Calvary Revival Church, 5833 Poplar Hall Drive, Monday at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, a donation in his name may be made to the Kidney Foundation, 1515 N. Military Hwy., Norfolk.

Mary Poorman

KILL DEVIL HILLS, NC - MARY G. POORMAN, 94, of Kill Devil Hills, NC and formerly of Cameron, WV, died June 30, 2004 at Outer Banks Hospital, Nags Head, NC. Mrs. Poorman had been residing in Kill Devil Hills with her niece, Judith Ann Harris Norberg and her husband, Ronald Norberg, Sr.. Mrs. Poorman retired as Bank President, after serving almost 60 years with both, First National Bank of Cameron, WV and Valley One Bank. She served as secretary of Order of Eastern Star, Chapter #9 of Cameron, for 26 years and was also a Past Matron. She was the daughter of the late Joseph L. and Edith Poorman and the widow of the late Ray Harris, and was also preceded in death by a sister, Opal Harris.

Mrs. Poorman is survived by niece, Judith Ann Harris Norberg and husband, Ron; grand-nephews, Ronald “Chip” Norberg, Jr. of Kill Devil Hills, NC and Ray Erik Norberg of Cameron, WV; and great-nieces, Noelle and Caitlyn Norberg of Kill Devil Hills, NC and Brittany Norberg of Renova, PA.

Funeral services and visitation with Eastern Star Rites will be held at Anderson Funeral Home, Cameron, WV, followed by interment at Beverly Hills Memorial Gardens in Morgantown, WV.

The family would like to express thanks to Dare County Social Services, Dare County Home Health & Hospice, Dr. Delana Phillips & staff, Drs. Michael Smith and Dimitri Poulis, OBH ED and 2nd floor doctors and nurses. Thanks also to friends and neighbors for expression of sympathy.

Mary Arrington

AVON, NC - MARY BROWNING ARRINGTON, 70, of Avon, died, Tuesday, September 30, 2003, in Avon. Mrs. Arrington was born in Kannapolis, NC and was a homemaker and a Baptist.

She was the daughter of the late Henry Hoyle and Ada Eller Browning and the wife of William A. (Doug) Arrington, Jr.

Besides her husband surviving are one daughter; Debbie Jett of Hardeeville, S.C. and two sons; Ricky Trollinger of McLeansville, N.C. and Keith Trollinger of Reidsville, N.C., one step-daughter; Pam Chambers of Stoneville, N.C and one step-son; Wayne Arrington of Portsmouth, Va. Three grandchildren, two step grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. The family requests no flowers. Twiford’s Island Chapel Hatteras is assisting the Arrington family.

Barbara T. Porter

BARBARA TACKIS PORTER, 74, of Nags Head, NC died Saturday, July 12, 2003 at her residence. Mrs. Porter, born in Williamson, WV, was a retired bookkeeper for Roberts Morris Men’s Store and was a Baptist. She was the daughter of the late Pete and Thelma Black Tackis and the widow of the late William O. Porter, Jr.

Mrs. Porter is survived by three sons, William O. “Billy” Porter, III and Christopher Adam Porter, both of Nags Head, NC and David Runyon of Brooklyn, NY; a sister, Marie Pullum of Wisconsin; and one grandchild.

Memorial services will be scheduled at a later date.

Gertrude “Trudy” Post

Moyock, NC - Gertrude “Trudy” Post, age 86, of 110 Sycamore Drive, P. O. Box 118, Currituck, NC 27929, died Wednesday, February 11, 2004 at the Brian Center. Mrs. Post was a native of Sterling, IL, was the wife of the late Andrew Lee Post and the daughter of the late Charles and Harriet Marvin. She was an Electronics Inspector.

She is survived by two daughters, Beverly Ann Post of Moyock, NC and Judith L. Welk of Camden, IN; a sister, Arnolda Albee of Loves Park, IL; two nieces, Jackie Sederquist of Grand Rapids, MI and Pat Beam of Rockcut, IL; a granddaughter, Kristin Post and three other grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and one adopted granddaughter, Roxanne Ravenshart.

Services will be at a later date.

Oscar Leon Powell

OSCAR LEON POWELL, 85, of 153 A Cowell Road Shawboro NC died Tuesday morning in Ahoskie NC. He was a native of Virginia son of the late James O. and Mrs. Bettie Sawyer Powell and the widower of Tillie Cowell Powell. Mr. Powell was a retired farmer, a member of the Pilmoor United Methodist Church the NC Pork Producers Association and Co Founder of Powells Markets.

Mr. Powell is survived by one daughter Susan Earley and husband Bill of Ahoskie NC, one son William Powell and wife Eddie Jo of Shawboro NC and one grandson Paxtin Powell. He was preceded in death by a daughter Marsha Powell.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday afternoon at 2:00 o’clock in Twifords Memorial Chapel 405 East Church St. by Rev. C H Wellons and Rev. Scott Wilson Parsons. Burial will follow in the Cowell Family Cemetery, Shawboro NC. The family will receive friends at the Funeral Home Wednesday evening from 7:00 until 8:00 o’clock and all other times at the residence of his son and daughter in law 136 Powell Road, Shawboro NC. Flowers are welcome, however anyone wishing to may make contributions to the Pilmoor United Methodist Church PO Box 65 Currituck NC 27929 or to the Crawford Township Volunteer Fire and Rescue Shawboro NC 27973.

Michael Paulsen

Powells Point, NC - Mr. Michael “Mike” Francis Paulsen, age 57, of 106 Gardenia Drive, Powells Point, NC, died Tuesday, June 29, 2004, at his residence. Mr. Paulsen was born in Essex County, NJ, the son of the late George Henry Paulsen and Dorthea Marie “Dorothy” Riker Paulsen of Powells Point, NC and was the husband of Elizabeth Marie “Betsey” Boegershausen Paulsen. He was the owner and operator of The Music Store in Kitty Hawk, NC, for 18 years. He currently operated the Music Store in Harbinger, NC; a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Traffic Control; attended Montclair State College; and was a member of the Grandy Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Besides his mother and wife, Mr. Paulsen is survived by one daughter, Rebakah Marie Paulsen of the home; two sons, Michael Prior of Kill Devil Hills, NC and Jonathan George Paulsen of Kitty Hawk, NC; one sister, Pam M. Stafford of Middletown, NJ; two brothers, Glenn Andrew Paulsen of Montclair, NJ and Christopher Paulsen of Tinton Falls, NJ; and three grandchildren, Elias Willoughby; Logan Michael Prior; and Alex Scott Prior.

A funeral service will be Friday, July 2, 2004, at 2:00 PM in the Grandy Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses with James Hogan officiating. The family will receive friends at Twiford’s Colony Chapel in Manteo, NC, Thursday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. At other times the family will be at the residence, 106 Gardenia Drive, Powell’s Point, NC. Burial will follow in Laurel Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Valeria Shaw Pautienius

Valeria Shaw Pautienius, 85, of 3457 Caratoke Highway, Maple, NC died Friday, October 10, 2003, in the Albemarle Hospital, Elizabeth City, NC. She was born in Hallsboro, NC to the late Carson and Irene Brown Shaw. She was the widow of the late Francis M. Pautienius. Mrs. Pautienius was a Baptist. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Louise Shaw Benton.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews, of which includes Rita Perry and husband, Larry, of Maple, NC, Nancy Wallace and husband, David, of Greensboro, NC and Benjamin Benton, Jr. and wife, Evelyn, of South Mills, NC. Also surviving are a step-niece, Sharon Farmer and husband, Jim, of Zebulon, NC, brother-in-law, Benjamin Benton, Sr. and wife, Thelma, of South Mills, NC.

The body has been sent from Twiford Funeral Home, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, NC to Punta Gorda, FL for funeral services. A graveside service will be conducted in the Royal Palm Memorial Gardens, Punta Gorda, FL, Tuesday, October 14, 2003, at 11:00am. The family suggest in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts be made to the Rehoboth Baptist Church, P. O. Box #56, Maple, NC 27956. Kays-Ponger Funeral Home, 635 E. Marion Ave., Punta Gorda, FL is assisting the family.

Peggy Sewell Payne

Elizabeth City, NC - Peggy Sewell Payne, age 75, of 100 E. Burgess St. Elizabeth City, NC, died February 12, 2003, in Albemarle Hospital. She was born in Hyde County daughter of the late Claude Burns Sewell and Cora Adams Sewell Mayo, and was the wife of George Speilman Payne of the residence. She worked as a secretary for City Sheet Metal, and was a member of Blackwell Memorial Baptist Church, and a member of the Joy Club.

Mrs. Payne is survived by two sons, Donald W. Payne of Wilmington, DE and Larry P. Payne of Elizabeth City, NC; one sister, Mabel Cox, of Swan Quarter, NC; two brothers, Keith Sewell of Bakersfield CA, and Samuel Sewell of Elizabeth City, NC; one grandchild and two great grandchildren.

Funeral service will be Friday, February 14, 2003, at 11:00 AM in Blackwell Memorial Baptist Church with Rev. Leigh Gillis officiating. The family will be at the residence on 100 E. Burgess St. Elizabeth City, NC. Memorial donations may be made to Blackwell Memorial Baptist Church, 700 N. Road St. Elizabeth City, NC 27909. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Cheryl Anderson

Cheryl Lynn Roark Anderson, age 46, of 134 Holly Crest Drive, Grandy, NC, died Thursday, December 4, 2003. Mrs. Anderson, a native of Logan County, WV, was the wife of Robert Michael Anderson of the residence and the daughter of Carson Jack Roark of Grandy, NC, and the late Nancy Lou O’Neil Roark. She was a cashier at Food Lion and a Baptist.

Besides her husband and father, she is survived by two daughters, Misty Dawn Browning and Rebecca Sue Browning both of Grandy, NC; three grandchildren, Terrence, Savannah, and Isabella; one sister Linda Carol Brown of Ottawa, WV; and a brother David Roark of Grandy, NC.

A funeral service will be Saturday, December 6, 2003, at 11:00 AM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. F. Joe Griffith officiating. The family will receive friends before the service Saturday from 10:00 to 11:00 AM and at other times at the residence of her father, Carson Roark, 114 Faris Drive, Grandy, NC. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 404 Jessup Street, Elizabeth City, NC 27909.

Irene Payne

MANTEO, N.C. - IRENE QUIDLEY PAYNE, 72, of Manteo, died, Sunday, March 28, 2004, in Elizabeth City. Mrs. Payne was born in Manteo and was a homemaker. She was a member of Mount Olivet United Methodist Church.

She was the daughter of the late Rowan and Grace Midgett Quidley and the wife of the late Hezekiah Frank Payne, Sr.

Surviving are seven daughters; Frankie P. Self of Elizabeth City, Lana Martinez, Larri Peyton, Diane Flynt and Donna Willis all of Manteo, Elizabeth Rowe of Manns Harbor and Maxine Richards of Deery, N.H., one son; Hezekiah “Buddy” Payne, Jr of Manteo, one step-daughter; Norma Etheridge of Manteo and one step-son; William “Billy” Payne of Boone, N.C., three sisters; Lela Jones of Portsmouth, Va, Lois Twyne and Jean Godfrey both of Manteo, three brothers; Odell Quidley of Powells Point, Charles Quidley and Earl Quidley both of Manteo and Ralph Sears of Grandy. 15 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life will be held Wednesday, March 31, 2004, at 11:00 a.m. in Twiford’s Colony Chapel by the Rev Glenn Greenway with burial in Roanoke Island Memorial Gardens. Friends may join the family at Twiford’s Funeral Home, Tuesday from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

James Rudolph Payton

Elizabeth City, NC - James Rudolph Payton, age 75 of 1040 Traci Dr., Elizabeth City, NC died Friday, February 07, 2003 at Albemarle Hospital. He was a native of Columbus, GA; son of the late Thomas and Loren Bruner Payton and was the husband of Myrtice Ritcherson Payton of the residence. He was a retired Senior Chief in the U. S. Navy with 20 years of service in Nuclear Power and was a veteran, having served during the Korean Conflict and the Viet Nam War. He was a member of the William Clarence Jackson Post # 6060 of V. F. W., the Fleet Reserve Association and the Elizabeth City Moose Lodge.

Besides his wife, Mr. Payton is survived by three sisters, Brenda Woollard of Surry, VA, Tammy Rickman of Jacksonville, FL and Melissa Payton of Elizabeth City, NC; two sons, Tim Dees Payton of Jacksonville, FL and William Ballentine Payton of Southport, NC; a brother, Terry Payton of Columbus, GA and eight grandchildren.

A funeral service will be conducted on Sunday, February 9, 2003 at 2:00 pm in Twiford’s Northside Chapel, 1115 N. Road St., Elizabeth City, NC with Military Honors, with the Rev. F. Joe Griffith officiating. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday evening from 7:00 until 8:00 PM and in the lobby of the funeral home immediately following the service. At other times at the family will be at the residence.

Jean Maxine Best Pearce
Wayne County, NC Native

Jean Maxine Best Pearce, age 63, of 610 West Main Street, Elizabeth City, NC, died Monday, March 3, 2003, at Sentara Norfolk Hospital. Mrs. Pearce was born in Wayne County, NC, on July 22, 1939. She was the daughter of the late Kimber Nicholas Best and Nancy Suggs Best of LaGrange, NC. She was the wife of Dr. Dan M. Pearce of the residence.

Jean grew up in the New Hope community where she graduated from New Hope High School in 1957 as Co-Valedictorian. She earned degrees from Mt. Olive College where she was a choir member and from Greensboro College, graduating as a Sociology Major with highest academic honors. For several years Jean worked as caseworker for the Blind in North Wilkesboro, NC and the City of Greensboro, NC. As a member of the Holy Family Catholic community of Elizabeth City, she participated in the Catholic Daughters and sang in the choir. Her hobbies were music, crafts (including knitting, ceramics and basketry) and gardening for which she had a “green thumb.”

Besides her husband and mother, she is survived by two sons, Dr. Kimber Charles Pearce of Columbia, SC, and Jason Claude Pearce of Silver Spring, MD; and a brother, Max R. Best of Goldsboro, NC. Jean leaves many friends and relatives who will remember her for her lovely voice, her infectious laughter, her high intellect and her pure and loving heart.

A memorial service will be Saturday, March 8, 2003, at 11:00 AM at Holy Family Catholic Church with Rev. James Buchholz officiating. The family will receive friends in the church reception hall immediately after the memorial service. Memorial donations to assist the blind may be made to the Elizabeth City Lion’s Club, PO Box 1112, Elizabeth City, NC 27909.

Cornie Mae S. Pell

Cornie Mae Stallings Pell, age 84, of Shawboro, NC, went to be with the Lord, March 2, 2003. She was born in Perquimans County daughter of the late Edward T. and Sallie King Stallings, and the widow of Paul Edward Pell Sr.. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and loved her family and friends very much and put them first in her life. She always had a twinkle in her eye and a “witty” answer for you. She was an inspiration to all that came in her presence. No matter how heavy her burden or pain, she would always try to give you that little “smile” and an encouraging word. No more pain-no more suffering-Praise God-She fought a good fight. Her faith in her God got her through it all. She was a faithful member of Providence Baptist Church, Shawboro, NC.

Mrs. Pell is survived by one son, Paul E. Pell Jr. of Shawboro, NC; three daughters, Ella Mae P. Pell and husband, Melvin of Chesapeake, VA, Sally Ann P. Morris and husband, Aubrey G. of Elizabeth City, NC, Betty Marie P. Kight and husband, Joseph W. of Shawboro, NC; five grandchildren Belinda Stallings of Richmond, VA, Kim M. Underwood and husband John of Elizabeth City, NC, Kevin Morris of Elizabeth City, NC, Weldon Kight and wife Suzy of Ashburn, VA, and Paula K. Franson and husband Mike of Cape May, NJ; eight great grandchildren, Kolby, Kyle, and Kaden Underwood of Elizabeth City, NC, Adam, Jonah, and Jacob Kight of Ashburn, VA, Jessica and Holly Franson of Cape May, NJ; one brother, Sidney Stallings and wife Gladys of Belvidere, NC; one sister, Sue Stallings and husband Asa of Belvidere, NC; two nieces and two nephews and several cousins. Cornie will also leave a special place in the hearts of her many friends who loved and supported her during her life.

A funeral service will be held on March 5, 2003 at 11:00 am in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Revs. Charles Wellons and Charles Stevens officiating. Burial will be in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive at the funeral home Tuesday from 7:00 to 8:30 and also immediately following the chapel service. Memorial donation made be made to Providence Baptist Church, 765 Shawboro Rd., Shawboro, NC 27973 . The family will be at the residence of Aubrey and Sally Ann Morris, 584 Blount Rd., Elizabeth City, NC.

Dessie Penson

South Mills, NC - Dessie Rausevic Penson, age 88, of 126 Pine Ridge Drive, South Mills, NC, died Thursday, May 20, 2004, in Albemarle Hospital. She was a native of Milwaukee, WI, and was the wife of the late Duke Penson.

She is survived by one son, Louis Penson of South Mills, NC.

A private funeral service will be held at a later date in Akron, OH.

Aldana Perez

MANTEO, NC - ALDANA SORENSEN PEREZ, 88, of Manteo, died, Friday, January 16, 2004, in Nags Head. Mrs. Perez was born in DeKalb, Ill and was a retired speech and hearing therapist for Ridgefield Public Schools.

Mrs. Perez was the daughter of the late Henry Richard and Aldana Andrews Drury Sorensen and the wife of the late James J. Perez.

Surviving are her son; Richard Carll DeSilver of Manteo, three grandchildren; Andrew C. DeSilver of Seattle, Washington, Amanda J. DeSilver of Edmonds, Washington and Dwynwen DeSilver of Bethany, Ct, three great-grandchildren; Nicolas Sabatelli, Sofia Sabatelli and Gabriel Sabatelli all of Bethany, Ct.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 446, Manteo, N.C. 27954. Twiford’s Colony Chapel Manteo is assisting the Perez family.

MARY BOGUE PERRY
Native of Elizabeth City, NC

Mary Bogue Perry, 90, formerly of Third Street, Elizabeth City and presently a resident of Greenville, NC, died Thursday, March 27, 2003, in the Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville, NC. She was born in Elizabeth City, NC to the late John P. Bogue Sr. and Narcissus Smith Bogue and was the widow of the late Curtis Edward Perry. Mrs. Perry was a member of the Blackwell Memorial Baptist Church.

She is survived by three daughters, Doris P. Cox of Greenville, NC, Joyce P. Herring of Houston, TX., and Mary Ann P. Wussow of Kingwood, TX; two sons, Curtis Perry, Jr. of Carrolton, TX. and James R. Perry of Watauga, TX; one sister, Affie Spivey of Belvidere, NC; one brother, Oscar H. Bogue of Roanoke Rapids, NC; 13 grandchildren, 4 step grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and 3 step great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, March 30, 2003, at 3:00pm in the Blackwell Memorial Baptist Church by Rev. Dr. Bob Crisp. Burial will be in the West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends and relatives in the Assembly Hall of the Church immediately following the funeral service and at other times at her residence, 916 Third Street, Elizabeth City, NC.

Edna Perry

Elizabeth City, NC - Edna Hope Blanchard Perry, age 80, of 3049 Main Street Ext. died January 20, 2004 in Albemarle Hospital. Mrs. Perry was born in Chowan County and was the daughter of the late Irvin R. Blanchard and Sinnie Hollowell Blanchard. She was retired from registered nursing and worked for several years as a public health nurse for King’s Daughters Hospital.

Mrs. Perry is survived by her husband, Julian L. Perry of the residence, her daughter, Brenda Perry Ashburn, and her husband Bill, of Elizabeth City, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by three brothers, Stanley Blanchard of Edenton, Gerald Blanchard of Belvidere and Leon Blanchard of Belvidere.

A funeral service will be conducted Thursday, January 22, 2004 at 1:00 PM with the Rev. Glenn Greenway officiating. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the lobby of the funeral immediately following the service, and at other times at the residence, 3049 Main Street Ext. Elizabeth City, NC. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
