Donald Perry

KILL DEVIL HILLS, NC - DONALD DENTON PERRY, 53, of Colington in Kill Devil Hills, NC died August 12, 2004 in a Chesapeake, Va. hospital. Mr. Perry was born in Dare County, NC and was a self-employed carpenter, and had served in the Merchant Marines.

He was the son of the late John Raymond and Ann Elizabeth Evans Perry.

Mr. Perry is survived by three daughters, Samantha Blackwell of Manteo, NC, Elizabeth Winslow of Southern Shores, NC, and Latisha Perry of Ohio; one son, Samuel Perry of Colington, NC; three sisters, Carrie Hardy of Manteo, NC, Gladis Jackson of South Mills, NC and Ramona Quinn of Redding, CA; one brother, Vernon Perry of Colington, NC; and five grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held at Colington United Methodist Church on Tuesday, August 24, 2004 at 6:30 pm with Rev. Bob Pitsch officiating.

Twiford’s Colony Chapel, Manteo is assisting the family with arrangements.

Kenneth Oden

HATTERAS, NC - KENNETH WADE ODEN, 58, of Hatteras, died, Monday, July 12, 2004 after a short illness.

He is survived by his mother and father, Carlos Desmond and Josephine Austin Oden of Hatteras, a brother Jeff Oden and his wife Katie, also of Hatteras and their daughter Marci.

Kenneth was a member of the Hatteras United Methodist Church, Cape Hatteras Masonic Lodge # 698 AF&AM; and an co-owner/manager of the Sea Gull Motel in Hatteras.

Though he was little in stature, he left some mighty big footprints as can be attested to by his many friends.

A Service of Remembrance will be held Thursday, July 15, 2004, at 11:00 a.m. in the Hatteras United Methodist Church by the Rev. Charles Moseley and Dwight Burrus. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Hatteras United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 310, Hatteras, N.C. 27943 or The Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum, Hatteras, N.C. 27943. The family will be receiving friends at the home of Carlos and Josephine Oden, 57217 Oden Lane Hatteras or they may be reached by e-mail jckoden@earthlink.net. Twiford’s Island Chapel Hatteras is assisting the Oden family.

Georgene Olsen

Elizabeth City, NC - Georgene Maryann Weston Olsen, age 58, of 103 Quail Run, Elizabeth City, NC, died Tuesday, July 13, 2004 in the Albemarle Hospital. She was a native of Brooklyn, NY, and was the daughter of the late Herbert Weston, Sr. and Violet Childs Weston. She was the wife of Frederick Olsen of the residence, and was a Catholic.

Besides her husband she is survived by two sons, Christopher Olsen of Charleston, SC, and Chode Olsen of Menominee Falls, WI; two brothers, Herbert Weston, Jr. of Los Angeles, CA, and Richard Weston of Charleston, SC.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date. The family will be at the residence. Twiford Northside Chapel, 1115 N. Road Street is in charge of arrangements.

Elma Onley

MRS. ELMA ARMSTRONG ONLEY, 88 of 1700 West Ehringhaus St. Elizabeth City, NC died Saturday August 14, 2004 in Winslow Memorial Home. She was a native of Tyrrell County, NC, the daughter of the late Roland and Beatrice Armstrong Armstrong, and the widow of Quinton S. Onley. She had retired from the Elizabeth City Hosiery Mill. Mrs. Onley was a member of the First Christian Church, a charter member of the Fellowship Sunday School Class, and had served as a Deaconess. She was also a member of Matoaca Council #10 Degree of Pocahontas.

She is survived by: three daughters, Delores Meads and husband Vance, Glenda O. White and husband, William, and Gail O. Hobbs all of Elizabeth City, NC; one son Quinton Ray Onley Sr. and wife Jeannette of South Mills, NC; one brother Robert Armstrong of Elizabeth City, NC; 11 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Norma Jean Bateman, a sister Sadie A Hobbs, and three brothers Carlos, Jack and Clayton Armstrong.

Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday afternoon, August 17, 2004 at 4:00 P.M. in the First Christian Church by Revs. Michael Barnes and Roland Cooper. Burial will follow in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 7:00 until 8:30 P.M. in Twiford Funeral Home, 405 East Church St., Elizabeth City, NC and other times at the residence of her daughter and son in law Delores and Vance Meads, 1700 Darian Drive, Elizabeth City, NC.

Juliette Orr
Native of Detroit, MI

Mrs. Juliette Hannert Orr, age 87, of Elizabeth City, NC, died Monday, March 8, 2004 in Albemarle Hospital. She was born in Detroit, MI, the daughter of the late Charle Hannert and Erna Wendt Hannert, and was the widow of Roland Tecumseh Orr. She was a member of Cann Memorial Presbyterian Church.

She is survived by a daughter, Jane Elizabeth Orr of Richmond, VA; a son Roland T. Orr, Jr., and daughter-in-law Jane Bunch Orr of Fayetteville, NC; a brother Charles Hannert of Bloomfield Hills, MI; and two grandchildren, Kimberly O. AlmandMoss, and Roland T. Orr, III.

A funeral service will be Wednesday, March 10, 2004, at 2:00 PM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC, with the Rev. Leigh Gillis officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the lobby of the funeral home. Burial will follow in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Doris Lee Griffin Osmon
Pasquotank County native

Doris Lee Griffin Osmon, age 75, of Lorton, VA, died Wednesday, September 10, 2003, in Springfield, VA. Mrs. Osmon was the beloved wife of Richard B. Osmon; loving mother of two sons, Mark W. Rippe of Ashburn, VA, and Daniel R. Rippe of Baltimore, MD; grandmother of Derek, Jonathan and Christian Rippe.

A graveside funeral service will be Monday, September 15, 2003, at 2:00 PM in Old Hollywood Cemetery, Elizabeth City, NC. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC, is in charge of local arrangements.

Larry Gene Ott

Larry Gene Ott, 54, passed away August 4, 2004 in Chesapeake General Hospital. He was born in Hicksville New York to the late Henry George Ott and Ivole Blair Dowdy. Having served in the U.S. Army, he later worked as an auto mechanic for Civil Service.

Mr. Ott is survived by his wife Phyllis Louise Ott; daughter Tracy O. Gainer of Norton; and two step-daughters Pamela Farrell of Chesapeake, Robin Wooten of Suffolk and step- son Eddie Lowey of Virginia Beach; two sisters Sherry Caldwell of Virginia Beach, Dianna Ott of Louisville, Ky, brothers Kenny Ott of Whitesburg, Ky, and Chuck Dowdy also of Ky, and 5 grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held August 7, 2004 at 1:00 pm in the Chapel of Twiford Funeral Home with the Rev. Johnny McDonald officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday evening from 7:00 to 8:00pm. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made in his name to the American Heart Association.

James Gray Overcash

CHESAPEAKE - James "Jim" or "Buddy" Overcash, 62, of the 500 block of Broad Bend Circle, went to be with the Lord July 16, 2003. He was born in Statesville, NC to the late Elizabeth Roberts and James Oliver Overcash. Mr. Overcash was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War.

He was a member of First Baptist Church of Norfolk, the Cross Roads Sunday School Class, and the Tidewater Blue Grass Association. Mr. Overcash was predeceased by his first wife, Sally Duncan Overcash and his son, Randy Overcash.

Survivors include his loving wife, Vivian Leigh of the home; one daughter, Rebecca Ann Overcash of Chesapeake; two step sons, Raymond D. Benton, Jr. and Kevin M. Benton; two sisters, Mary O. Remnet of Portsmouth and Frances O. Ward of Suffolk.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Norfolk, 312 Kempsville Rd. with Pastor Sandy Alberson officiating.

Burial will follow at Chesapeake Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at Twiford Funeral Home's Colonial Chapel on Friday from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the American Cancer Society, 2730 Ellsmere Ave, Norfolk, VA 23513 or to First Baptist Church of Norfolk, Missions Fund, 312 Kempsville Rd., Norfolk, VA 23502.

Mr. Overcash has now become a memory for his wife Vivian, but that memory is now a treasure. Jim will be sorely missed by his family and many, many friends.

Flora Mae Owen

Flora Mae Wood Munden Owen, age 79 of Raleigh, NC and formerly of Elizabeth City, NC died peacefully on Wednesday, April 30, 2003 at the home of her son in Youngsville, NC. She was a native of Camden Co., NC and had resided in Elizabeth City for over 60 years. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Elizabeth City. She was the daughter of the late Benjamin Jedson Wood, Sr. and the late Elizabeth Chappell Wood and the widow of Fulford Leigh Munden and Vernon Rice Owen, Sr.

Flora graduated from high school at the Junior Order Home in Lexington, NC in 1941. She later studied art through the Washington School of Art. She also attended King’s Beauty School in Greensboro, NC. She was a licensed cosmetologist and occasionally worked as a beautician. She served as a youth teacher and auxiliary leader in her Church. She served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the San Jose, California Mission. She devoted her life to her husband and family as a loving mother to her children and grandchildren. She was a sweet, angelic friend to those around her.

Survivors include a daughter, Carol Annette Ranhorn of Eden, NC; four sons, David Leigh Munden of Youngsville, NC and Fulford Edward Munden of Snellville, Georgia and Robert Wood Munden of Elizabeth City, NC and Mitchell Lynn Munden of Ft. Hood, Texas; 22 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren and a sister, Ruth Elizabeth Wood Markham Betts of Elizabeth City, NC.

Funeral services will be Monday, May 5, 2003, at 2:00pm in Elizabeth City at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with the Bishop Adren Hughes officiating. Burial will follow in the Westlawn Memorial Park in Elizabeth City. The family will receive friends at the home of Kent and Susan Goodwin, 114 Chancey Dr., Elizabeth City on Sunday, May 4 from 1:00-5:00pm and at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel on 405 E. Church St. in Elizabeth City from 6:00-8:00pm. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

Arnette Owens

Camden, NC - Arnette Brite Owens, age 77 of 200 Riverview Ave., Camden, NC died Thursday, August 28, 2003 at her residence. She was born in Pasquotank Co, NC; daughter of the late Rufus and Laeura Harris Brite and was the wife of Floid Edward Owens of the residence. She was a dedicated member of Corinth Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School for over 50 years. She was a former bookkeeper for Belks and former co-owner/operator of the Causeway Marina.

Mrs. Owens is survived by four daughters, Kitty Games of Camden, NC, Janet Cartwright of Saluda, VA, Floyd Dean Dail of Camden, NC and Linda Lowry of Elizabeth City, NC; a son, David Owens of Camden, NC; three sisters, Nannie Mae Hall of Chesapeake, VA, and Louise Jackson and Dot Scott, both of Elizabeth City, NC.

A funeral service will be conducted on Sunday, August 31, 2003 at 3:00 PM in Corinth Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Roy Head officiating. Burial will be in Highland Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church and at other times at the residence. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Corinth Baptist Church Building Fund, 1035 U. S. 17 S, Elizabeth City, NC 27909

Alberta L. Owens

Alberta L. Owens, age 83 of 144 N. Spot Rd., Powells Point, NC died Wednesday, December 25, 2002 at Chesapeake General Hospital. She was born in Ridgely, MD; daughter of the late James Albert and Katie Tressa Tarbutton Lowman and was the widow of Roland Day Owens. She was a member of the Rodanthe Chapter Order of Eastern Star.

Mrs. Owens is survived by four daughters, Shirley Parker of Chesapeake, VA, Ella Sasnett and Ruth Thomas, both of Powells Point, NC and Jane Koontz of Grandy, NC; a brother, Thomas Alvin Lowman of Smyrna, DE, nine grandchildren, twenty eight great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. She was predeceased by a son, Nathan Porter, Jr.

A graveside service will be conducted on Sunday, December 29, 2002 at 2:00 PM in the Powells Point Christian Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, NC on Saturday evening from 7:00 until 8:30 PM and at other times at the residence of her daughter, Ella Sasnett, 1053 Bayview Rd., Powells Point, NC.

Thomas W. Owens

Elizabeth City, NC - Thomas W. Owens, 76, of 211 Small Drive, Elizabeth City, NC, died Sunday, June 8, 2003 at Albemarle Hospital. He was born in Shiloh, NC to the late Walter and Rovena Holmes Owens and was the husband of Anne Barnes Owens of the residence. He was a retired Chief Boatswain Mate with the United States Coast Guard, was a veteran of the United States Navy having served on the U. S. S. Hornet during World War II, and was a veteran of the United States Coast Guard having served during the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War.

Besides his wife, Mr. Owens is survived by four daughters, Nancy Owens Carlson and husband John of Elizabeth City, NC, Debbie Owens of Ivor, VA, Susan Owens Cooper and husband Jay of Elizabeth City, NC, and Kathy Owens Hepler and husband Tom of Aurora, CO; two brothers, George W. Owens of Shirley, MA and James E. Owens of Gun Barrel City, TX; twelve grandchildren and three great grandsons.

A graveside service will be conducted on Wednesday, June 11, 2003 at 2:00 PM at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery by the Rev. James Harrington. The family will be at the residence.

Cecil Cabot Benton
Retired Farmer

Cecil Cabot Benton, age 88, of South Mills, NC, died Thursday, April 29, 2004 at his residence. He was born in Columbus County, NC, son of the late Lucien Perry and Bertie Kissam Benton and was the widower of Margaret James Benton. He was a member of Evergreen United Methodist Church and attended Trinity United Methodist Church, a charter member of the South Mills Volunteer Fire Department, and a charter member of the South Mills Ruritan Club.

Mr. Benton is survived by a daughter, Vivian Benton Bridgers and husband Val of South Mills, NC; a son-in-law, Ken Winslow of South Mills, NC; two brothers, Arthur Benton and wife Helen of Kenansville, NC, and Benjamin W. Benton, Sr. and wife Thelma of South Mills, NC; four grandchildren, Kennette Winslow Watkins and husband Nealson, Amanda Cecile Winslow, Morgan Benton Bridgers, and Courtney James Bridgers, and a great grandson, William Holden Watkins. Beside his wife, Mr. Benton is preceded in death by a daughter, Lois Marie Benton Winslow, a son, Benjamin P. Benton, a sister, Betty Sibbett, and three brothers, Rufus, Clarence, and Ralph Benton.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, May 1, 2004 at 2:00 pm in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Tommy Fields. The family will receive friends, Friday evening at the funeral home, from 7:00 until 8:30 and at other times at the residence. Memorial donations made be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, P.O. Madeline Dunham Benton
Retired School Teacher

Madeline Dunham Benton, age 82, of 120 Beech Tree Drive, Shiloh, NC, died Monday, February 17, 2003 at Albemarle Hospital. She was born in Warren County, TN, daughter of the late Frank Boyd and Minnie Prater Dunham and was the widow of the late Charles Wesley Benton. She was a retired public school teacher having taught in Puerto Rico, Florida, Central High School in Elizabeth City, NC, and Camden High School, and was a life time member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Juanita Chapter #1, San Juan Puerto Rico, for 50yrs., and a past worthy matron.

Mrs. Benton is survived by a son, Mike Benton and wife Joy of South Mills, NC; three granddaughters, Terra Cartwright and husband Bryan of Whiteman AFB, Missouri, Michelle Ellis and husband Tony of Travis AFB, California, and Heidi Benton of South Mills, NC; a sister-in-law, Betty Dunham of Florida and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister and a brother, Velma D. Taylor and Frank B Dunham, Jr.

A memorial service will be conducted on Saturday, February 22, 2003 at 2:00 pm in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC, with the Pastor Dave Combs and Mr. Brian Forehand officiating. Rites will be performed by the Order of the Eastern Star, Camden Chapter, #252 OES, following the service the family will receive friends in the lobby of the funeral home. ALICE DAWSON BERRY
Retired accountant

Alice Dawson Berry, 64, of 102 Hickory Hill Drive, Grandy, NC died Monday, October 14, 2002, in the Barco Sentara Nursing Home. She was born in Appalacha, Virginia to the late Harper and Zelma Hocutt Dawson. Mrs. Berry was a retired accountant and a member of the Coinjock Baptist Church.

She is survived by a daughter, Tina Berry Craddock and husband, Steven, of Grandy, NC, a son, Ellis Harper Berry and wife, Virginia, of Greensboro, NC; two sisters, Laura Catherine Fortune of Alta Vista, VA and Ruth Midgette of Grimesland, NC; a brother, Lewis Dawson of Jonesboro, GA and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Michael Robert Berry.

Graveside services will be in the Hampton Cemetery, Waterlily, Thursday, October 17, 2002 at 11:00am by the Rev. Charles H. Wellons. The family will receive friends and relatives at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City Wednesday evening from 7:00 until 8:30pm and at other times at their residence, 102 Hickory Hill Drive, Grandy. NC. Twiford Funeral Home, 405 E. Nellie M. Owens

Nellie McKinney Owens, 95, of Elizabeth City, NC died Sunday, November 02, 2003, in the Winslow Memorial Home. She was born in Mitchell County, NC to the late Waitzell and Alice Biddix McKinney and was the widow of the late Apollos Cecil Owens. Mrs. Owens was a member of the Faith Baptist Church.

She is survived by one daughter, Maxie Owens Pursell and husband, Thurl “Butch”, of Elizabeth City, 10 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Olive O. Waldorf.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, November 4, 2003 at 2:00pm in the Faith Baptist Church by Rev. Dr. Al Thompson. Burial will be in the West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends and relatives in the Church Social Hall immediately following the service and at other times at the home of Maxie and “Butch” Purcell, 109 Chesterfield Dr., Elizabeth City, NC. The family suggests that memorial gifts be made to the Faith Baptist Church Building Fund, 113 Foxboro Dr., Elizabeth City, NC. Twiford Funeral Home, 405 E. Church St., is in charge of arrangements.

Carroll Berry

Manteo - Carroll Waverly Berry, 76, died Monday, September 29, 2003 at a Nags Head nursing facility. Mr. Berry was born in Engelhard, NC and worked at Kellogg Supply for many years and retired from Manteo Marine as a mechanic on Out Board motors. He was a member of the Roanoke Acres Church of Christ and Manteo Masonic Lodge #521 AF & AM. Mr. Berry was the son of the late Cecil Lee and Mabel Watson Berry.

He is survived by one sister, Linda B. Pentecost of Wanchese; three brothers, Stafford A. Berry and wife Jean, Jimmy Berry and wife Rita both of Manteo and Russell Berry of Manns Harbor. He was preceded in death by two sisters Nancy Ann Berry and Gladys Wilson and one brother, Ellis Ray Berry.

A Celebration of life will be held at Twiford’s Colony Chapel, Manteo, on Friday, October 3, 2003 at 1:00 PM with Rev. Ronnie Midgett and Rev. Les Wilkerson officiating. A graveside service will be held following the funeral at Fulford Cemetery in Engelhard at 3:30 PM with Steve Bryan officiating. The family will be receiving friends at Twiford’s Colony Chapel on Thursday, October 2nd from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 930 B. Wellness Drive, Greenville, NC 27834.

Mildred Owens

Mildred Belanga Owens, age 81, of 298 Harbinger Ridge Road, Harbinger, NC, died Friday, April 9, 2004 at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, in Norfolk, VA. A native of Currituck County, NC she was born the daughter of the late James Hall Belanga and the late Gertie Beasley Belanga, and was the widow of Woodrow Wilson Owens, Sr. She was a homemaker, and a member of Powells Point Christian Church.

Mrs. Owens is survived by: three daughters, Betty O. Seymour of Elizabeth City, NC, Jane Barca of Oak Ridge, NJ, and Carol Petruska of Virginia Beach, VA; three sons, Joe T. Owens of Tampa, FL, and Woodrow W. Owens, Jr. and Robin D. Owens, both of Harbinger, NC; two sisters, Clara Potter of Norfolk, VA, and Phyllis Pafford of Louisiana; eleven grandchildren, and five great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be conducted Tuesday, April 13, 2004 at 11:00 AM, in Powells Point Christian Church, Harbinger, NC, with the Rev. David Coxson officiating. The family will receive friends at the church on Monday evening, April 12, 2004 from 7:00 to 8:00 PM. Flowers will be accepted but memorial donations may be made to the New Heart Pavilion at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, 600 Gresham Avenue, Norfolk, VA 23507. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Jean Berry

Jean Layden Berry, age 73, of 507 Harvest Point Road, Weeksville, NC, died Saturday, December 27, 2003, at Albemarle Hospital. Born in Perquimans County, NC, she was the daughter of the late Robert Lee and Mary Harris Layden, and was the wife of Edgar Y. Berry of the residence. She was a retired nurse and a member of Blackwell Memorial Baptist Church.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Berry is survived by: one daughter Cindy B. Lowry and husband Kent of Elizabeth City, NC; one sister Mary Burgess Williams of Camden, NC; one brother Ralph Layden of Hertford, NC; and two grandchildren Ashton and Cade Lowry.

A graveside service will be held conducted Monday, December 29, 2003 at 2:00 PM, in New Hollywood Cemetery, officiated by the Rev. Dr. Robert Crisp. The family will be at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Lowry, 1566 Sound Neck Road, Elizabeth City, NC. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC is in charge of arrangements.
