Grady Owens, Jr.

Grady F. Owens, Jr., 77, of Port Charlotte, FL died Sunday, November 23, 2003 at his residence. He was born in Norfolk, VA on April 20, 1926 and moved to Port Charlotte in 1993 from Charlottesville, VA. He was a retired truck driver for Amoco Oil Company, a veteran of World War II having served in the U. S. Marine Corps, and a member of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #2121 of Port Charlotte.

Mr. Owens is survived by a son, Charles Owens of Baltimore, MD; a niece, Kathryn Moore Falk of Virginia Beach, VA; two sisters, Mary Owens Moore of Virginia Beach, VA and Diana Clark of Chesapeake, VA; caregivers, Franklin and Jeannette Paul and Anna Demkiw all of Port Charlotte, FL; and a grandchild.

A graveside service will be Monday, December 1, 2003 at 1:00 PM at the Tillett Family Cemetery, Wanchese, NC. Twiford’s Colony Chapel, Manteo, NC is in charge of arrangements.

Shirley Ownley

Elizabeth City, NC - Shirley White Ownley, age 65, of 525 Ownley Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died Monday, February 9, 2004 in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. She was born in Pasquotank County, NC, daughter of the late James A. White and Gracie Bundy White, and was the wife of Sammy Leighton Ownley of the residence. Mrs. Ownley worked for the Recycling Center in Pasquotank County, and was a member of Faith Assembly of God in Hertford, NC.

Besides her husband she is survived by one daughter, Linda Ownley Ferrell and her husband, Donald of Hertford, NC; five sons, Sammy L. Ownley, Jr., Ed Ownley, Wayne Ownley, and Curtis Ownley all of Elizabeth City, NC; , and William L. Ownley of Hertford, NC; two brothers, Joe White of Elizabeth City, NC, and Clarence White of Columbia, SC; one sister, Katie White of Plymouth, NC; she was predeceased by a sister, Gracie White; five grandsons, Travis Ferrell, Ed Ownley, Jr., William Ownley, Jr., Jordan and Carson; three granddaughters, Meghan, Samantha, and Whitney; two great-grandchildren, Brooke and Cody Ownley. She was a very loving wife, mother and grandmother, and had many special friends in her life. She loved all her family and friends, and was deeply devoted to all of them. She will be missed by each and everyone of us. She always had a kind work and a beautiful smile.

A funeral service will be Thursday, February 12, 2004 at 11:00 AM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, with the Pastor Ron Gardner and Donald Gregory officiating. Burial will follow at the Family Cemetery on the farm on Cherry Glade Road. The family will receive friends at the residence.

Christopher Andrew Painter

Moyock – Christopher Andrew Painter passed away at the young age of 17 at Sentara Nofolk General Hospital on Jan. 16, 2004.

He is survived by his mother Kimberly Lynn Long, stepfather David Long, father, Rick Talmage, stepmother Ronnie Aldridge, brother Kevin Painter and sister Brittany Talmage, grandparents Pamela and Glendall Wilson, Faye and Dale Prescott and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. He was also the loving boyfriend and proud father-to-be of Eva Lane and unborn baby Madison.

Chris was a junior at Currituck County High School that will be sorely missed by many friends and loved ones.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2:oo pm at Twifords Colonial Chapel, Chesapeake. Burial will follow at Moyock Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday from 7:00 until 8:00 pm.

Donations are being accepted to help with burial and medical costs at any Wachovia branch: Christopher Painter Fund, c/o Kimberly Long.

Gerald Palm

Kill Devil Hills, NC - Gerald Arthur Palm, 60, of 264 Outrigger Drive, Kill Devil Hills, NC, died Wednesday, April 16, 2003 in Albemarle Hospital. He was born in Yonkers, NY to Margaret E. Torhan Palm of Deposit, NY and the late Arthur Palm and was the husband of Pamela Beeler Palm of the residence. Mr. Palm was a retired electrical engineer, a member of the U.S.C.G Auxilliary #1607 Flotilla, and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy having served during the Vietnam War.

Besides his wife and mother, Mr. Palm is survived by two daughters, Barbara Caputo of Milford, CT, and Sharon Dudley of Waverly, VA; one son, Scott Russell of Stanford, CT; one sister Lorraine Viviano of Deposit, NY; three brothers, Arthur Palm and Howard Palm both of Mahopack, NY and Robert Palm of Yonkers, NY; and six grandchildren.

A Memorial Mass will be conducted on Thursday, April 24, 2003 at 10:00 AM at Holy Family Catholic Church with Father James Buchholz officiating. The family will receive friends at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel on Wednesday from 7:00 to 8:30 PM and immediately following the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to American Cancer Society, c/o Hazel Anderson, 106 South Ashe Street, Elizabeth City, NC 27909.

Dorothy Parker

NORFOLK, VIRGINIA - Dorothy “Dot” Land Parker, 80, of the 1200 block of Elk Avenue, Norfolk, Virginia, died Friday, September 17, 2004, in DePaul Hospital.

She was born January 6, 1924, in Norfolk, Virginia, to Early Lee Land and Jessie Coppersmith Land, and was preceded in death by her husband of sixty years, Cecil Aubrey Parker on September 11, 2002. Mrs. Parker was a member of the Sharon United Methodist Church, and was a retired medical secretary having worked in the medical field from 1941 to 1970.

Survivors include two daughters, Jessie N. Moore and her husband Carl of Poplar Branch, NC, and Janet R. Hatfield and her husband Warren of Norfolk, Virginia; one niece Marlene Smith of St. Port Lucie, Florida; one nephew Ray Cusic of Virginia Beach, Virginia, five grandchildren Kathryn M. Beyersdorf and husband Russell, Stephen Moore, Eric Moore, Jason Evans and Shannon Evans; two step grandsons, Skip Hatfield and Brandon Hatfield; and a great-grandson Jaden Evans.

A graveside service will be held Monday, September 20, 2004, at 1:00 P. M. at the Parker Family Cemetery, Aydlett Road, Poplar Branch, NC, with Rev. Steve Castle officiating. The family will be at the home of her daughter Jessie N. Moore, 866 Aydlett Road, Poplar Branch, NC.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be directed to; the Sharon United Methodist Church, P. O. Box 182, Poplar Branch, NC 27965.

Floyd Parker

Spot, NC - Floyd “Fluff” Leland Parker, age 76, of 253 N. Spot Road, in the Spot community of Powells Point, NC, died Tuesday, July 13, 2004 in Norfolk General Hospital. He was a native of Currituck County, NC, and was the son of the late Charlie and Edie Gallop Parker. He was the husband of Joann Forbes Parker of the residence. Mr. Parker was a retired commercial fisherman and was an elder at Powell’s Point Christian Church.

Besides his wife he is survived by one daughter, Iris Ann Parker Clark and Stephen Harris; one sister Kathleen Parker of Spot, NC; two grandchildren, Buddy and Wayne Clark both of Spot, NC. He was predeceased by one son, Gary Wayne Parker, and one son in law, Kevin Clark, Sr.

A memorial service will be Sunday, July 18, 2004 in Powells Point Christian Church at 2:00 PM with the Rev. David Coxson, Rev. Cecil Styons, and Rev. Jerry Owens. The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Powells Point Christian Church. The family request that memorial donations be made to Buddy and Wayne Clark Trust Fund, The Bank of Currituck, PO Box 647, Grandy, NC 27939. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel 405 E. Helen L. Nash

JARVISBURG, NC - HELEN LORRAINE HOWARD NASH, 85, of Jarvisburg, NC died Wednesday, June 2, 2004 in at Sentara Nursing Home, Barco, NC. Mrs. Nash was born in Baltimore County, Maryland and was a homemaker. She was the daughter of the late James Taylor Howard and the late Myrtle Regina Finley Howard and was the widow of the late Joseph L. Nash.

Mrs. Nash is survived by a daughter, Donna Lee Wilke of Baltimore County, MD; a son, Larry Dean Nash of Jarvisburg, NC; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Entombment of cremated remains will be in the Roanoke Island Memorial Gardens Mausoleum in Manteo.

Twiford’s Colony Chapel, Manteo is assisting the family with arrangements.

Mary Eliza Hewitt Nash
Native of Camden, NC

Mary Eliza Hewitt Nash, age 96, of Elizabeth City, NC, died Thursday, May 6, 2004, in Winslow Memorial Nursing Home. She was a native of Camden, NC, and daughter of the late William Wilson Hewitt, and Margaret Elizabeth Simons Hewitt, and wife of the late Vernie Nash. She was retired from Camden County High School Cafeteria, and was a member of Geneva Baptist Church.

She is survived by three daughters, Marie Harden, Melissa Gray and her husband, David, both of Camden, NC, and Mary Elizabeth Carroll and her husband, Wayne of Lakeland, FL; one son, Samuel Nash, III of Camden, NC; twenty six grandchildren, fifty seven great grandchildren, and fourteen, great-great grandchildren

A funeral service will be Sunday, May 9, 2004, at 3:00 PM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Roland Cooper and Rev. Carroll Daniels officiating. Burial will follow in the Family Cemetery in South Mills, NC. The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM and immediately following the service in the lobby of the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. David Gray, 970 North 343, Camden, NC. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Gladys Needham
Currituck County Resident

Gladys Waterfield Twiford Needham, age 78, of Powells Point, died Wednesday morning, November 5, 2003 in the Albemarle Hospital. She was born in Currituck County, daughter of the late Manton Waterfield and Nettie Waterfield Hoskins. She was a member of the Powells Point Baptist Church.

She is survived by her husband, Gideon Leo Needham of Powells Point, NC; two sons, Marty Gene Twiford of Clayton, NC, and Travis Wayne Twiford and his wife Kathryn of Virginia Beach, VA; one step-daughter, Barbara Jean Taylor and her husband Mike of Chesapeake, VA; two sisters, Lizzie Harris of Powells Point, NC, and Kathleen Lorenz and her husband Frank of Grandy, NC; one brother, Herbert Lee Waterfield and his wife Dorothy of Powells Point, NC; six grandchildren, Karen Singletary and her husband Jason of Cary, NC, Kimberly Koontz and her husband Chris of Clemmons, NC, Brandon and Ryan Twiford of Clayton, NC, Janie Leigh and John Michael Taylor both of Chesapeake, VA. Mrs. Needham was predeceased by her first husband Richard E. Twiford.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 8, 2003 at 11:00 AM in the Powells Point Baptist Church with the Rev. Roland Cooper and Dr. Lyndell Stike officiating. Burial will follow in the Powells Point Christian Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday evening, 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC, and at other times at the residence, 7816 Caratoke Highway, Powells Point, NC. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Gladys J. Nelson

Gladys Jacobsen Nelson, 79, of Long Island, NY and formerly of Elizabeth City died Friday, November 22, 2002, in Long Island. She was a native of Brooklyn, NY and was the daughter of the late Nils and Helene Rienersten Jacobsen and widow of the late Russell Nelson. She was a retired county employee in New York.

Surviving Mrs. Nelson are a daughter Elaine Brea of Roslyn Heights, NY, a son, Russell Nelson of Potsdam, NY; a sister, Ruth Hurley of Baldwin, NY and four grandchildren.

Graveside services will be conducted Monday afternoon, November 25, 2002, at 3:00pm in the West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery by Father Stan Easty. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, Church St., Elizabeth City is in charge of local arrangements.

Timmy LeRoy Nelson, Jr.
Moyock Resident

Timmy LeRoy Nelson, Jr., age 36, of 101 Magnolia Drive, Wedgewood Lakes, Moyock, NC, died Sunday, June 22, 2003, at his residence. Mr. Nelson, a native of Norfolk, VA, was the husband of Lorenda Armstrong Nelson of the residence and the son of Timmy LeRoy Nelson, Sr., and Addie Louise Hanna Nelson of Maple, NC. He was a member of Rehoboth Baptist Church.

Besides his wife and parents he is survived by a daughter, Candie Marie Nelson of the residence; a son, Matthew Lee Nelson of the residence; a sister, Paula Louise Nelson Brinkley of Grover, NC; and a brother, Richard Lionel Nelson of Norton, VA.

Funeral services will be Thursday, June 26, 2003, at 11:00 AM at Rehoboth Baptist Church with the Rev. Dale Pace officiating. Burial will follow in Laurel Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday from 7:00 to 8:30 PM and at other times at the residence of his parents, 329 Maple Road, Maple, NC.

Laura Nancy Alexander Newbern

Elizabeth City, NC - Laura Nancy Alexander Newbern, age 98, of 508 West Main Street Elizabeth City, NC, died in Guardian Care Nursing Home, Tuesday, March 16, 2004. She was born in Tyrell County, the daughter of the late James Louis Alexander and Mary Rhodes Alexander. She was the wife of the late Marshall Edward Newbern, and a member of First Christian Church and the Loyal Women’s Bible Class.

Mrs. Newbern is survived by two daughters, Kay N. Smith and her husband Bill and Margaret N. Myers all of Elizabeth City, NC; one son, Anthony Edward “Tony” Newbern and his friend Louise of Stone Mountain, Ga., one grandson Brian Anderson Newbern of Raleigh, and two great grandchildren Corrine Newbern and Ethan Newbern both of Raleigh and several special nieces and nephews.

A celebration of her life will be held Friday March 19, 2004, at 2:00 P. M. at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel 405 East Church Street Elizabeth City with the Rev. Glenn Brigman and Rev. William Holmes officiating. Burial will be in Old Hollywood Cemetery.

The family will join friends Thursday evening from 7:00 P. M. to 8:30 P. M. at Twiford’s Funeral Home 405 East Church Street and following the funeral service at the funeral home.

The family suggests that memorial contribution be directed to: the First Christian Church 701 Parsonage Street Elizabeth City, N. C. 27909.

Madge Elizabeth Newman

Virginia Beach – Madge Elizabeth Ansell Freeman Newman, 70, died December 27, 2003 at her residence. Mrs. Newman was born in Knotts Island, NC to the late, Benjamin and Marie Margaret Smith Ansell. She worked as a cook for the Virginia Beach School System and was predeceased by her husband, Chester Newman.

Survivors include a daughter, Dorothy Freeman of Knotts Island; two sons, Wayne Freeman of Huntingdon, TN and James Freeman of Knotts Island; a brother, William Ansell of Knotts Island; ten grandchildren, and one great grandchild.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 11:30 am at the Knotts Island Baptist Church with Pastor Chuck Mann officiating. Burial will follow at the Creeds Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Twiford’s Colonial Chapel, Chesapeake on Tuesday from 7:00 until 8:00 pm.

Terry M. Newsome

HATTERAS, NC - TERRY MICHAEL NEWSOME, 55, of Hatteras, NC, died Friday, May 14, 2004 at his residence. Mr. Newsome was born in Buxton, NC, attended Hatteras Assembly of God and was disabled. He was the son of the late Willie Raymond and Nora Stowe Newsome.

Mr. Newsome is survived by a brother, Raymond Newsome of Colington, NC.

Funeral services will be held at Hatteras Assembly of God on Sunday, May 16, 2004 at 3:00 pm with Rev. Jim Reynolds and Rev. Carroll Daniels officiating. Burial will be in the Balance Family Cemetery. The body will be placed in the church on Sunday at 1:30 pm. The family will be at the home of Eph & Daisy O’Neal in Hatteras.

Nellie Newsome

Nellie Lane Newsome, 89, formerly of Ehringhaus St., Elizabeth City, NC died Friday, September 10, 2004, in the Obici Hospital, Suffolk, VA. She was born in Perquimans County, NC to the late Lamuel and Mollie Ward Lane and was the widow of the late Giles Smith “Jimmy” Newsome. Mrs. Newsome was a member of the First United Methodist Church.

Surviving, includes a son, Giles Lane Newsome and wife, Lucy Davis, of Suffolk, VA and a granddaughter, Dawn Lane Newsome of Richmond, VA.

Gravesides services will be conducted Monday, September 13, 2004, at 11:00am in the New Hollywood Cemetery by Rev. Gene Boyce and Bishop Hallett Evans. The family will receive friends and relatives at Twiford Funeral Home Sunday afternoon from 5:00 until 6:00pm. Twiford Funeral Home, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, NC is assisting the Newsome family.

Harry Niser

SKYCO, NC - HARRY EDWARD NISER, 63, of Wanchese, NC died Thursday, July 24, 2003 in Norfolk General Hospital. He was born in Laurel, MD and was a retired masonry and construction worker and was a protestant. Mr. Niser was an accomplished Blue Grass Musician and was especially gifted in playing the banjo. He was the son of the late Joseph A. and Selma Pugh Niser.

Mr Niser is survived by three sons, Rev. Harry N. Niser of Bath, NC, Eric A. Niser of East Lake, NC and Joey Niser of Seagrove, NC; and one grandchild.

A celebration of Harry’s life will be held at Twiford’s Colony Chapel, Manteo on Wednesday, July 30, 2003 at 2:00 pm with Rev. Harry N. Niser officiating. Burial will follow in the Cudworth Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday evening from 7:00 to 8:30 pm. Memorial donations may be made in Memory of Harry Niser to the Hosanna Bible Church, POB 1208, Washington, NC 27889.

Walter Nixon

Walter Nixon, 87, of 230 Whitehat Road, Hertford, NC, died Wednesday, December 11, 2002 at his residence. He was born in Perquimans County, NC, the son of the late James Adam and Lillie Bell Chapell Nixon and was the husband of Margaret Morris Nixon of the residence. He was a self employed farmer.

Besides his wife, Mr. Nixon is survived by two daughters, Mary Ella Green of Elizabeth City, NC and Sarah Nixon of Kitty Hawk, NC; two sons, Lloyd Wallace Nixon of Moyock, NC and James Lee Nixon of Kitty Hawk, NC; one sister, Kathleen Banks of Hertford, NC; nine grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Walter Ray Nixon.

A funeral service will be conducted on Friday, December 13, 2002 at 11:00 AM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Doug Cook. Burial will follow at Cedarwood Cemetery. The family will be at the residence. Memorial donations may be made to Faith Baptist Church, 113 Foxboro Drive, Elizabeth City, NC 27909.

Audrey Lane Nixon

Hertford, NC - Audrey Lane Nixon, 81, of 148 Weight Station Road, Hertford, NC, died Thursday, January 23, 2003 at Winslow Memorial Home. She was born in Perquimans County, NC, the daughter of the late Charlie and Maude Ward Lane and was the wife of David L. “Roy” Nixon of the home. She was a homemaker and a member of Woodville Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School for 20 years.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Nixon is survived by two daughters, Phyllis N. Davis and husband Richard of Hertford, NC and Elaine N. Roberts and husband Harvey of Shawboro, NC; one sister, Leona Maxwell of Pensecola, FL; five grandchildren, David Sanders and wife Joanne of Hertford, NC, Duane Byrum and wife Stacey of Greenville, NC, Caroline Rossman and husband Michael of Las Vegas, NV, Julie Roberts and husband Kevin of Hertford, NC, and Jackie Casey and husband Tommy of Wilmington, NC; and four great grandchildren, Troy and Mason Sanders of Hertford, NC and Haley and Zachary Byrum of Greenville, NC. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Julia N. “Judy” Sanders, and a brother, Linwood Lane.

A funeral service will be conducted on Sunday, January 26, 2003 at 2:00 PM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Jake Mullins. Burial will follow at New Hollywood Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday from 6:00 to 7:30 PM and at other times at the residence.
