Dorothy Nixon

Dorothy D. Nixon, 84, of 1107 Arrowhead Trail, Edenton, NC died Saturday, March 8, 2003. She was the daughter of the late Charlie and Patti Davis and was the widow of Percy W. Nixon. She was a member of Rocky Hock Baptist Church, the Oak Grove Women’s Club, and was the manager of Arrowhead Beach during its development.

Mrs. Nixon is survived by two sons, Joe Nixon and wife Johnsie and Roy Nixon and wife Julia all of Edenton, NC; four grandsons, Doug and Ken Nixon of Orlando, FL, Scott Nixon of Gainesville, FL, and Charles Nixon of Panama City, FL; one granddaughter, Marion Johnson of West Palm Beach, FL; two great grandsons and five great granddaughters. She was preceded in death by an infant son; four sisters, Nellie Smith, Mary Nixon, Bessie Peele, and Patti Weston; and two brothers, C. H. Davis and Hal Davis.

A memorial service will be conducted at Rocky Hock Baptist Church on Tuesday, March 11, 2003 at 1:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, Elizabeth City, NC furnished the information.

Minnie Nixon

Point Harbor, NC - Minnie Lee Smith Nixon, 83, died Wednesday, September 29, 2004 at her residence. Mrs. Nixon was born in Hertford and was a retired beauty shop owner. She was a member of Kitty Hawk United Methodist Church, Order of The Eastern Star #79 and Order of The Amaranth Coastal Court #12. Mrs. Nixon was the daughter of the late Percy Lee Smith and the late Lillian Thompson Smith and the widow of Ralph Medford Nixon.

She is survived by two sisters, Eula S. Perry of Elizabeth City and Susie S. Beasley of Grandy; several nieces and nephews; she was preceded in death by her only daughter, Lillian “Dolly” Weatherburn; one brother, Carlton P. Smith and two grandchildren, Michelle and Bradford Weatherburn.

A Celebration of Life with Order of Eastern Star Rites will be held at the Kitty Hawk United Methodist Church on Saturday, October 2, 2004 at 1:00 PM with Rev. Richard Stone officiating. Burial will take place at Powells Point Christian Church Cemetery in Harbinger. The family will be at the home of Mrs. Nixon at 8929 Caratoke Highway, Point Harbor.

America Chierici Nolker

Nags Head, NC - America Chierici Nolker, age 85 of 147 W. Oak Knoll Dr., Nags Head, NC died Wednesday, February 12, 2003 at Albemarle Hospital. She was born in Pennsylvania; daughter of the late Giuseppi “Joe” and Amabile Chierici and was the widow of Clarence Nolker. She was a baker for the West Deer Township School System for over 15 years.

Mrs. Nolker is survived by a son, Charles Nolker of Nags Head, NC; a step daughter, Gladys Gross of Butler, PA; six grandchildren thirteen great grandchildren.

No services are planned at this time.

Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, NC is in charge of arrangements.

Jeffery Noon

Virginia Beach - Jeffery Scott Noon - February 2, 1959-December 20th, 2003. He enters Gods' presence survived by his loving mother, Mary Lou Noon, his father Wilbert F. Noon, and brothers Kevin and Curtis Noon. The family requests in lieu of flowers, all gifts of love be given to Hope Haven Childrens' Home, Virginia Beach. A memorial service will be held at Norfolk Garden Baptist Church on December 28 at 3:00 pm.

John Wynne Norfleet
Retired from Norfolk Naval Shipyard

John Wynne Norfleet, age 59, of 1172 Toxey Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died Thursday, October 30, 2003, at his residence. Mr. Norfleet, a native of Newport News, VA, was the husband of Elsie Toxey Norfleet of the residence and the son of the late Cyril B. Norfleet and Hazel Wynne Norfleet. He was a retired planner and estimator for the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, a Baptist, and a Boy Scout Leader.

Besides his wife he is survived by a daughter, Dawn Smithson, and husband Anthony, of Elizabeth City, NC; a son, William Lloyd Norfleet of Elizabeth City; a sister, Lora Faye Holmes of Elizabeth City, NC; and three grandchildren, Sarah Smithson, Jordynn Anders and Shay Anders. He was predeceased by a brother, Norman Norfleet.

Funeral service will be Saturday, November 1, 2003, at 3:00 PM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with David King officiating. Burial will follow in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the lobby of the funeral home following the service, and at the residence at other times. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Jane Rebecca Winslow Norman
Camden resident

Camden, NC - Jane Rebecca Winslow Norman, age 79, of 190 Country Club Road, Camden, NC, died Friday, February 21, 2003, at Winslow Memorial Nursing Home. Mrs. Norman, a native of Pasquotank County, was the widow of Lank Norman, Jr., and the daughter of the late Nathan Bennie Winslow and Annie Harris Winslow Dozier. She had worked at Supak Manufacturing.

Mrs. Norman is survived by two sons, Walter Norman and Bobby Norman, both of Camden, NC; one granddaughter, Debrah Hutto, and husband Timothy, of Elizabeth City, NC; six sisters, Margie Egan, and husband Joe, of Elizabeth City, NC, Carolyn Dail of South Mills, NC, Ruth Clarkson and Shirley Yates of Raytown, MO, Virginia Naylor of Blue Springs, MO, and Katherin Beltz of Independence, MO; and three brothers, Larry Winslow of Clinton, MO, Tom Winslow of Raytown, MO, and Robert Winslow of Holden, MO. She was predeceased by two brothers, Raymond Dozier and Robert Dozier.

A graveside funeral service will be Monday, February 24, 2003, at 2:00 PM in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. F. Joe Griffith officiating. The family will receive friends at the residence.

William Norris

South Mills, NC - William Melvin Norris, age 72, of 318 Old Swamp Road, South Mills, NC, died Thursday, July 15, 2004 at his residence. He was a native of Camden County, NC, and was the son of the late George Lee Norris and Ida Jones Norris, and was the husband of the late Charlotte Sawyer Norris. He was a retired Farmer.

Mr. Norris is survived by two daughters, Theo Norris Bohn and her husband Al, and Sandra Norris Riggs and her husband Darrell, all of South Mills, NC; three sons, Wesley Norris and his wife Janet of Elizabeth City, NC, Hersey Norris and his wife Tracy of Jarvisburg, NC, and Kevin Norris and his wife Tammy of South Mills, NC; nine grandchildren, and five great grandchildren.

A graveside service will be Saturday, July 17, 2004 at 2:00 PM in the Memory Gardens Cemetery with Pastor Al Thompson officiating. The family will be at the residence, 318 Old Swamp Road, South Mills, NC. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC is in charge of arrangements.

Sally Nunemaker

NAGS HEAD, NC - JUANITA “SALLY” MCMILLAN NUNEMAKER died Thursday, July 17, 2003 at her residence in Nags Head, NC after a hard fought battle with cancer. Mrs. Nunemaker was born in Hoke County, NC and was a homemaker. She was the daughter of the late Frank and Nora Faircloth McMillan and was also preceded in death by her husband, Carl P. Nunemaker, Jr.

Mrs. Nunemaker is survived by her son, C.P. “Buster” Nunemaker, III and Chris, both of Nags Head; brothers and sisters, Florence Macgogan, Eula Lunsford, Bonnie Davis, Rae and Neil A. Jackson, Rick and Faye McMillan, Grover and Nora”Diddle” McMillan, all or Raeford and Hoke County; grandchildren, Kevin H. Nunemaker and Brandi, Karen C. Nunemaker and Patrick; great-granddaughter, Hunter Renee; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A Service of Remembrance will be held at the Outer Banks Worship Center, Nags Head, on Tuesday, July 22, 2003 at 11:00 am with Rev. David Daniels and Rev. Jim Lewis officiating. The family will receive friends at the residence at 2229 Wrightsville Ave, Nags Head, on Monday evening from 6:00 to 9:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Carl P. Nunemaker Endowment Fund, c/o The Friends of Jockey’s Ridge, POB 358, Nags Head, NC 27959, or to Dare County Hospice, POB 1000, Manteo, NC 27954.

Michael R.J. O'Brien

Holiday Island, NC - Michael R. J. O’Brien, age 37, of F85 Spendrift Road, Holiday Island, NC died Tuesday, November 5, 2002. He was born in Groton, CT, son of the late James Edward and Mary Lou Barth.

Mr. O’Brien is survived by one sister, Larain D. Humiston of Jacksonville, NC, and one brother, Robert J. O’Brien of Suffolk, VA.

A memorial service will be Saturday, November 9, 2002 at 12:00 PM in Twiford’s Northside Chapel. Family will receive friends at the funeral home following the service.

Jimmy Willard O'Neal

Native of Hyde County

Jimmy Willard O'Neal, age 63, of 1519 Brumsey Drive, Elizabeth City, NC, died, Friday, March 14, 2003 at his residence. He was born in Ocracoke, NC, son of the late Harry W. and Essie Mae Parsons O'Neal. He retired from the U.S. Coast Guard after twenty years of service as a first class Boatswain Mate, and was a member of Ocracoke United Methodist Church.

Mr. O'Neal is survived by a son, Ronnie O'Neal of Moyock, NC; eight brothers, Harry F. O'Neal and Carlton Boyce O'Neal both of Elizabeth City, NC, George Lewis O'Neal and Herbert Farris O'Neal both of Bayboro, NC, Richard Charles O'Neal of Hertford, NC, Walton LeRoy O'Neal, Reginald Earl O'Neal, and Rex Beach O'Neal all of Ocracoke, NC. He was preceded in death by two brothers, James Elvin O'Neal and Bruce O'Neal.

A funeral service will be conducted Friday, March 21, 2003 in Ocracoke United Methodist Church at 2:00 PM.

IDA WILLIS WEST O’NEAL
Native of Hatteras, NC

Ida Willis West O’Neal, 99, of Hatteras, NC died June 4, 2003, Wednesday, in the Albemarle Hospital, Elizabeth City. She was born in Hatteras, NC to the late Charlie H. and Mary Alice Gaskins Willis and was the widow of the late John L. West and Milon O’Neal. Mrs. O’Neal was a member of the Hatteras Assembly of God Church.

She is survived by two daughters, Marion Vella of Corpus Christi, Texas and Martha W. Quidley of Hatteras, NC; 10 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Charlie W. West.

Funeral services will be conducted Monday, June 9, 2003, at 2:00pm in the Hatteras Assembly of God Church. Burial will follow in the Odom Family Cemetery. The family receive friends at the Twiford’s Island Chapel, Hatteras, NC on Friday evening, June 6 from 7:00 until 8:00 PM and at other times at the residence. Twiford Island Chapel, Hatteras, NC is in charge of arrangements.

Velma Sue O'Neal

Velma Sue Williams O'Neal, age 53, of 145 Scaff Lane, Aydlett, NC, died Wednesday, July 16, 2003, at her residence. Mrs. O'Neal, a native of Bradshaw, WV, was the widow of Michael Aubrey O'Neal, and the mother of Pamela Sue O'Neal of the residence. She is also survived by her trusted friend and companion, Ronnie D. Lilley, Sr., and her parents, Dailey and Jean Blankenship Williams of Poplar Branch, NC. She was the daughter of the late Johnny Payne. She was a member of Grandy Assembly of God Church.

Other survivors include a sister, Donna Poole and husband Bill of New Bern, NC; a brother Larry Williams of Poplar Branch, NC; and her mother- in-law, Barbara O'Neal of Barco, NC.

Funeral services will be Saturday, July 19, 2003, at 2:00 PM at Grandy Assembly of God Church. Burial will follow in Laurel Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at Twiford's Memorial Chapel from 7:00 to 8:30 PM Friday, July 18 and at other times at the residence.

Delores O'Neal

Ocracoke, NC - Delores Collins Witt O’Neal, 75, died Monday, November 3, 2003 at her residence. Mrs. O’Neal was born in Pittsburgh, PA and was a homemaker. She was a member of the Ocracoke United Methodist Church and was a volunteer worker for the Preservation Society Museum. She was the daughter of the late Willard G. Collins and Anna Grace Maybury Collins and the wife of Earl W. O’Neal, Jr. of the home.

Besides her husband survivors include one daughter, Sharen M. Breidert of Bedford, VA; one son, Mark O’Neal of Simpsonville, SC; two sisters, Phillis A. Wiggans of Macon, MO. and Carolyn Prenter of Virginia; one brother, W. Gordon Collins, Jr. of Oakland, CA; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A Service of Remembrance will be held on Thursday, November 6, 2003 at 2:00 PM at the Ocracoke United Methodist Church with Rev. Joyce Reynolds officiating.

Louise O'Neal

Ocracoke - Louise Tolleson O’Neal, 59, died on February 15, 2004 at DePaul hospital. Mrs. O’Neal was born in Portsmouth, VA, was a secretary for Tideland Electric Company and was a member of the Ocracoke Assembly of God. She was the daughter of Mary E. O’Neal Gaskins of Ocracoke and the late Lewis Tolleson, Jr. and was the widow of Isaac D. “Ikey D” O’Neal, Sr.

Besides her mother, she is survived by one son, Isaac “Ikey” O’Neal, Jr. and one granddaughter, Lucy Louise O’Neal, both of Ocracoke; one twin brother, Lewis Tolleson, III of Florida; three sisters, Maxine Mason, Linda Gaskill and Judy Garrish, all of Ocracoke;

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Ocracoke United Methodist Church on Thursday, February 19, 2004 at 1:00 PM with Rev. John White and Rev. Joyce Reynolds officiating. Burial will follow in the O’Neal Family Cemetery. The body will be placed in the church on Wednesday, February 18th. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Ocracoke Assembly of God Building Fund, P.O. Box 68, Ocracoke, NC 27960.

Calvin O'Neal
RETIRED U.S. AIR FORCE

KINSTON, N.C. - CALVIN GENE O'NEAL, SR, 54, of Kinston, died, Monday, June 28, 2004, in Kinston. Mr. O'Neal was born in Manteo, N.C. and was retired from the U.S. Air Force. Mr. O'Neal was a wonderful husband who was always there for his family and will be truly missed by those he left behind.

He was the son of Nettie Rogers O'Neal of Nags Head, N.C. and the late Albert O'Neal and the husband of Biggie O'Neal of the home.

Besides his wife surviving are one son; Calvin Gene O'Neal, Jr and one sister Gloria Flowers both of Manteo, one brother; Willie O'Neal of Virginia and two grandchildren; Lindsey Leigh O'Neal and Cyle Gene O'Neal.

A service of remembrance will be held Friday, July 2, 2004, in Twiford's Colony Chapel Manteo at 6:00 p.m. Friends may join the family at their residence 2751 Branchwood Drive in Kinston, Thursday from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Twiford Funeral Home Manteo is assisting the O'Neal family.

Johnny Lockwood Morgan

Johnny Lockwood Morgan, age 85, of 106 South McMorrine Street, Elizabeth City, NC, died Monday, December 9, 2002 at his residence.

He was a born in Camden, NC, son of the late James Taylor Morgan, Jr. and Mattie Williams Morgan Smith. Mr. Morgan worked as a cook for Hardee’s Restaurant and was a member of Sawyer’s Creek Baptist Church. He served in the U.S. Army.

He is survived by two sisters, Doris Whitehurst, and Nina Perry of Hertford, NC, and one brother, Elmer Lee Smith of Elizabeth City, NC.

Graveside service will be Wednesday, December 11, 2002 at 11:00 AM in the Morgan Family Cemetery. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Michael L. "Chauncey" Morgan
Pasquotank native

Michael Lee (Chauncey) Morgan, 45, 1026 Highway #158, Elizabeth City, NC died at his residence Saturday, January 18, 2003. He was born in Pasquotank County to the late Herbert Bruce and JoAnn Wright Morgan. Mr. Morgan was a rigger for the Tidewater Construction Company, a member of the Newland United Methodist Church and member of the New Lebanon Lodge #314 AF & AM.

He is survived by his brother, H. B. Morgan, Jr. of Elizabeth City, NC, an aunt, Frances Wright of Columbia, NC, five cousins, Connie W. Daniels, Ernie Wright III, Nancy W. Peele all of Manteo, NC, Becky W. Henry of Franklin, NC and Kelly W. Burton of Nags Head, NC. He is also survived by a very close friend, Chiquie Gregory and a host of distant relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday morning, January 23, 2003, at 11:00am in the Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, Church St., by Rev. Toni Wood and Glen Greenway. Burial will be in the Stokley Cemetery, in the Newland Section of Pasquotank County. The family suggest memorial donations may be made to the Newland United Methodist Church, 1686 Morgan’s Corner Road, Elizabeth City, NC 27909. The family will be at his brother’s resident, Mr. H. B. Morgan, Jr., 1036 Highway #158, Elizabeth City, NC.

Patrick Henry Morgan
Shawboro, NC native

Patrick Henry Morgan, age 83, of 150 Baxter Estates Road, Moyock, NC, died Tuesday, April 13, 2004, in the Albemarle Hospital. Mr. Morgan, a native of Shawboro, NC, was the son of the late Edwin Ferebee Morgan and Lucille Baxter Morgan and was married icon for fifty-four years to Irene Shelton Morgan of the residence. He was a graduate of Swanee Military Academy and had a Degree in Textile Engineering from North Carolina State University and a MA from Marshall University. He was a US Army Veteran of WW II having served in Japan, and had duty tours in Korea, and Thailand and retired as a Lt. Colonel in 1966 after twenty years of service. He worked as a textile engineer for Dan River Mills and was a Professor of Engineering and the Dean of Applied Science at Marshall University, retiring in 1979 when he moved home to Currituck, NC. He was a member of Pilmoor United Methodist Church.

Besides his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Kathy M. Fredericks and husband Douglas W. of Yorktown, VA; and two sons, Dr. Patrick H. Morgan, Jr., and wife Sharon of Currituck, NC, and Dr. Michael B. Morgan and wife Robin of Kitty Hawk, NC; and seven grandchildren, Patrick H. Morgan, III, Kristin Morgan, David Morgan, Doug Fredericks, Dana Fredericks, Katie Morgan, and Stephanie Morgan.

Funeral services will be Friday, April 16, 2004, at 2:00 PM at Pilmoor United Methodist Church with the Rev. Scott Wilson-Parsons officiating. Burial will follow in Moyock Memorial Cemetery with full military honors rendered by the U.S. Army. The family will receive friends at the residence and requests memorial donations to Pilmoor United Methodist Church Building Fund, PO Box 65, Currituck, NC 27929.

Hazel Morland

Sutherlin, Oregon - Hazel Morland, age 75, of Sutherlin, Oregon, died on Thursday, February 6, 2003. She was a native of Kitty Hawk, NC, daughter of the late Luther and Gertie Pugh Bateman, Sr. She is survived by her loving husband, Edward Roy Morland, and her daughter, Glenda Radigonda and her husband, Ron, two brothers and sisters in law, Luther and Ethel Bateman of Shawboro, NC, and Roy Tyrone and Kathryn Bateman of Va. Beach, VA, and an Aunt Leona Bateman of Norfolk, VA, three grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Graveside service will be Thursday, February 13, 2003 at 10:00 AM in South Mills Cemetery with the Rev. Dustin Sprouse officiating. The family will be at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Luther Bateman, 106 Sanderlin Road, Shawboro, NC. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
