Robert Lewis Morton, Jr.
Native of Nashville, TN

Robert Lewis Morton, Jr., age 72, of 102 Mill Road, Hertford, NC, died Thursday, April 1, 2004, at Guardian Care Nursing Home in Elizabeth City. He was a native of Nashville, TN, and the husband of Virginia Isaac Morton of the residence and the son of the late Robert Lewis Morton, Sr., and Bessie Mae Sadler Morton. He was a retired industrial salesman, a member of New Hope United Methodist Church, Past Grand Master of Independent Odd Fellows Jurisdiction of TN, member of Tennessee Lodge # 1, Association member of Achoree Independent Odd Fellows # 14 in Elizabeth City. He was a US Army Infantry Veteran of WW II.

Besides his wife he is survived by a daughter, Sherry Schlamp of Hertford, NC; a son Robert M. Morton of Hertford, NC; three grand children; and five great grandchildren.

Funeral services with full military honors rendered by the William Clarence Jackson VFW Post # 6060 will be Monday, April 5, 2004, at 11:00 AM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church, Elizabeth City, with the Rev. Alan Gibson officiating. The family will receive friends Sunday evening at the residence of his son, Mr. & Mrs. Robert M. Morton, 1113 Woodville Road, Hertford, NC, and immediately after the funeral service in the lobby of the funeral home. Burial will be in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Opal H. Moser

Opal Evalee Hayes Moser, age 82, of 2746 Barclay Avenue, Portsmouth, VA, died Thursday, September 25, 2003 in Maryview Medical Center Hospital, Portsmouth, VA. She was born in Pikeville, TN, the daughter of the late Charles Edward and Lura Caroline Rodgers Hayes, and was the widow of James Silas Moser. She was a member of White’s Creek Baptist Church in TN.

Mrs. Moser is survived by one daughter, Margaret Ann Skittelthrope of Elizabeth City, NC; five sons, Ronald J. “Bobby” Moser, David Moser, and Johnny Lee Moser, all of Elizabeth City, NC, Larry Dale Moser of Portsmouth, VA, and Robert Lee Moser of Chesapeake, VA; ten grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, Charles Edward Moser.

A funeral service will be Monday, September 29, 2003, at 2:00 PM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in Old Hollywood Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday from 7:00 to 8:30 PM at the funeral home and in the lobby of the funeral home immediately following the service.

Emma Eula Springle Munden

Poplar Branch, NC - Emma Eula Springle Munden, 84, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, went home to be with the Lord on November 10, 2002. She died at her residence under the care of special friends and family. She was born in Berkley, VA; daughter of the late Denard Davis Springle, Sr. and Eula Sutton Springle. Emma was preceded in death by her loving husband, Ernest A. Munden, Sr.

Emma served the Lord faithfully as an active member of Sharon United Methodist Church, as a Sunday School teacher for many years. She was known as “Sister” by the Springle family. She graduated from Poplar Branch High School and was involved in community service her entire life and always took care of shut-ins and the less fortunate.

Emma is survived by a daughter, Brenda Russell of Richmond, VA; a son, Ernest A Munden, Jr. of Frisco, NC; two brothers, Richard D. Springle of Virginia Beach, VA and William Earl Springle of Chesapeake, VA; two sisters, Naomi S. Simons of Camden, NC and Joyce S. Rabat of Kitty Hawk, NC; four grandchildren, David Russell, Kathy Doyle, Gilliad Munden and Micah Munden; one great grandchild, Megan Doyle and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, November 13, 2002 at 2:00 PM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, NC with Rev. Gene Goldfinch officiating. Burial will be at New Hollywood Cemetery. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the lobby of the funeral home and requests that memorial donations be made to Sharon United Methodist Church, 285 Poplar Branch Rd., Poplar Branch, NC 27965. Brenda and Ernest want to thank the caregivers for their faithfulness and loving care of our mother and father.

ELIZABETH GIBBS MURDEN
Native of Currituck County, NC

Elizabeth Gibbs Murden, 89. of 230 Short Cut Road, Barco, NC died Wednesday, July 9, 2003, in the Albemarle Hospital. She was born in Currituck County to the late Thomas B. and Annie Sermon Gibbs and was the widow of the late William J. Murden. Mrs. Murden was a member of the Rehoboth Baptist Church, WMU and was devoted to her church and its members.

Mrs. Murden is survived by several nieces, nephews and numerous friends.

Funeral services will be conducted Friday, July 11, 2003, at 2:00pm in the Twiford’s Memorial Chapel. Burial will be in the New Hollywood Cemetery. The family will greet friends and relatives in the lobby of the funeral home immediately following the funeral. The family suggests memorial gifts be made to the Rehoboth Baptist Church, P.O. William "Biggan" Murrow

Shawboro, NC - William Henry “Biggan” Murrow, 50, of 112 Station Lane, Shawboro, NC, died Thursday, June 12, 2003 at Albemarle Hospital. He was born in Gainesville, FL to the late William and Martha Shimp Stanley and was a well known self employed plumber in the Albemarle area.

Mr. Murrow is survived by his live-in companion for over four years, Carol A. Hogan Plichta; four sisters, Mary Ellen Burnham of Orlando, FL, Luella Rose Snow of Jacksonville, FL, Floydeane Marie Goodwin of Tampa, FL and Barbara Rose Riley of Orlando, FL; and one brother, Wayne Thomas Rushworth of Rome, GA.

The family will receive friends and relatives at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, Church St. on Monday, June 16, 2003 from 7:00 to 8:30 PM. At other times the family will be at the residence. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, P. O. Drawer 405, Elizabeth City, NC 27907 to help with funeral expenses.

William Joseph Myers
Veteran of WWII

William Joseph Myers, age 82, of Barco, NC, died Sunday, December 21, 2003 at Sentara Nursing Center, Barco, NC. He was born June 17, 1921 in Baltimore, MD, but lived most of his life in Fort Meade, FL, and had recently moved to North Carolina. He was a veteran of WWII, having served in the U.S. Army. He was the son of the late William J. Myers and Lillian Kirby Myers, and the husband of Marian Baggett Myers of the residence.

Besides his wife he is survived by one daughter, Lillian M. Hurdle and her husband Doug, Shawboro, NC; one granddaughter, Cindy Overman and her husband, Mark; one grandson, Lance Beckett; two great grandchildren, Sanders and Alyson Overman; two sisters, Ann Kirkwald and Irma Samargo. Mr. Myers was predeceased by his son, William J. Myers, Jr. and a brother John Myers.

An informal memorial service will be held Sunday, December 28, 2003 at 2:00 PM at Perkins Methodist Church, Shawboro, NC. The family will receive friends at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Doug Hurdle 1848 Short Cut Road, Shawboro, NC, after the memorial service. In lieu of flowers the family request memorial donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 400 Oberlin Road, Suite 220, Raleigh, NC 27605. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

James Napolitano

KILL DEVIL HILLS, NC - JAMES NAPOLITANO, 69, of Kill Devil Hills, NC died Sunday, September 5, 2004 at his residence. Mr. Napolitano, born in Jersey City, NJ, was a retired Trucking Supervisor and was a Roman Catholic. He was the son of the late Morris and Rose Wilcox Napolitano.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth Puterbaugh Napolitano of the residence; a son, John Napolitano of Bayonne, NJ; three sisters, Mary Spidaleth of Madison, NJ, Veronica Napolitano of Maywood, NJ, and Geraldine Panzino of Sayerville, NJ; one brother, John Napolitano of Bayonne, NJ.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Iva Deane Nash

CAMDEN, NC - Iva Deane Smith Nash, age 76, of Highway N.343, Camden, NC, died Saturday, November 2, 2002 at her residence. She was born in Pasquotank County, NC, daughter of the late Jessie and Alethia Rhodes Smith and was the widow of Louis L. Nash, Sr. Mrs. Nash was a retired School Cafeteria Manager, a retired school bus driver, a housewife, and a member of Geneva Baptist Church.

Mrs. Nash is survived by: three daughters, Hawana N. Leary of Old Trap, NC, Connie N. Harris of Camden, NC and Alethia N. Keaton of Elizabeth City, NC; four sons, Louis L. Nash, Jr. and Ted S. Nash, both of Camden, NC, Michael L. Nash of Elizabeth City, NC, and W. Irvin Nash of Camden, NC; one sister Hazel C. Simonds of Camden, NC, thirteen grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. She was predeceased by one sister Betty M. Sheppard and two brothers James A. Smith and Herbert Smith.

Funeral services will be conducted Monday, November 4, 2002 at 11:00 o’clock in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel by Dr. L.E. Stike. The family will receive friends in the lobby of the Funeral Home immediately following the service and other times at the residence. Burial will follow in Westlawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family request that Memorial donations be made to the Geneva Baptist church or to Albemarle Hospice.

Amy Moore

Amy Forbes Moore, 88, of 862 Sandy Hook Road, Riddle Community of Shiloh, NC died Friday, March 26, 2004, in the Albemarle Hospital. She was born in Camden County, NC, to the late Giddeon and Susan Duncan Forbes and was the widow of Louis Norman Moore.

Mrs. Moore is survived by two daughters, Phyllis Knowles and husband, William of South Mills, NC, and Myrtice Holton and husband, Walter, of Camden, NC; one son, Grover Winfred “Buddy” Ingram and wife, Donna, of Shiloh, NC; one step-son Jasper Moore and wife, Bobbi of Elizabeth City, NC; three sisters, Henrietta F. Harrison, Margaret F. Kight both of Shiloh, NC, and Louise F. Harrison of Camden, NC; one brother, Melvin Forbes of Shiloh, NC; 9 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, March 28, 2004, at 2:00 PM at Riddle Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. Roland Cooper officiating. Burial will follow in the West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will be at the home of the daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Holton, 103 Earl Street, Camden, NC.

Sheldon Midgett

MANTEO, N.C. - CAPTAIN SHELDON DERWARD MIDGETT, 75, of Manteo, died, Monday, April 12, 2004, in Chesapeake, Va. Captain Midgett was born in Dare Co and was a charter boat captain and boat builder. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and served in the U.S. Merchant Marines.

He was the son of the late George Lewis and Beatrice Midgette Midgett and the husband of the late Mildred Gard Midgett.

Surviving are one daughter; Shelly Spencer and husband Paul of Manteo, one son; Michael L. Midgett and wife Anna of Manteo and one step-son Billy Holton and wife Carol of Wanchese, six sisters; Laura Jones of Manteo, Janet Tillett of Manns Harbor, Beatrice Robins of Nags Head, Carolyn Johnson and Martha Ann Beasley both of Wanchese and Betty Gaither Duncan of Manteo, three brothers; Claude Midgett of Poplar Branch, Rev. Ronnie Midgett of Currituck and Isaac Midgett of Elizabeth City. 11 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Friday, April 16, 2004 at 1:00 p.m. by Elder Paul Spencer. Burial will be in the Basnight Cemetery in Manteo. Friends may join the family at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on Friday beginning at 11:30 a.m. and at other times at the home of his daughter and son-in law Paul and Shelly Spencer 234 Brakewood Drive Manteo. Twiford’s Colony Chapel Manteo is handling arrangements.

Luellen Midgette

Camden, NC - Luellen Pendergrass Stone Midgette, age 82, of 130 South Mill Dam Road, Camden, NC, died Sunday, September 12, 2004 at her residence after a long illness. Born in Dekalb County, Georgia, she was the daughter of the late Wilbur and Hattie Pendergrass, and the widow of the late Andy P. Stone Sr., and the late Hubert Midgette. Mrs. Midgette was a homemaker.

Mrs. Midgette is survived by: two sons, William M. Stone and Andy P. Stone, Jr., both of Camden, NC; two grandchildren Cindy Stone Cartwright and Dawn Stone Barnette; and one great grandchild; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by four sisters and two brothers.

A funeral service will be conducted on Thursday, September 16, 2004, at 2:00 P.M. in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, by the Rev. Roland Cooper. Burial will follow in New Hollywood Cemetery. A visitation will be held Wednesday, September 15, 2004 from 7:00 to 8:00 P.M., and following the service. Twiford Funeral Home, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC is in charge of arrangements.

Jean Miller

Duck, NC - Jean Hambleton Miller, 81, died on Tuesday, July 27, 2004 at a Norfolk hospital.

Mrs. Miller was born in Washington, DC and was a retired artist and a homemaker. She was a graduate of Miami University and a member of the Duck Woods Country Club, the Dare County Arts Council and the Outer Banks Community Foundation. Mrs. Miller was the daughter of the late James I. Hambleton and the late Mabel Nichol Hambleton and the wife of Glen Miller of the home.

Besides her husband, she is survived by one daughter, Melissa M. Gibson and husband, James E. of Williamsburg, VA; two sisters, Edwina Earp of Olney, MD and Nancy Chance of Brookville, MD; three grandchildren, Chase, Deehje and Taylor Gibson; she was preceded in death by two sons, Chase H. Miller and Craig N. Miller.

A Memorial Service will be held at the Duck United Methodist Church Gazebo on Friday, July 30, 2004 at 11:00 AM with Rev. Charles Gill officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Outer Banks Community Foundation, P.O. Box 1100, Kill Devil Hills, NC 27948.

Twiford’s Colony Chapel, Manteo, is in charge of these arrangements.

Mildred Rodgers Miller

BUXTON, N.C. - MILDRED RODGERS MILLER, 89, of Buxton, died, Monday, August 23, 2004, in Hatteras. Mrs. Miller was born in Rockland, Maine and was a homemaker. He was the son of the late Joseph W. and Clara Palmer Rodgers.

Mrs. Miller is survived by her husband, Raymond E. Miller of the residence; a daughter, Joanne Coleman and husband Robert of Litchfield, ME; two sons, John Shaw of Buxton and Harry Shaw and wife Kim of Salisbury, NC; seven grandchildren, Sherri Spake and husband Dennis of Buxton, Sara Beckner, Natalie Shaw, Matthew Shaw, Kasey Shaw, Karen Lord and Brenda Miedzionski and several great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at Buxton United Methodist Church on Saturday, August 28, 2004 at 2:00 pm, with the Rev. Charles Moseley officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Mildred R. Miller Memorial Fund, c/o RBC Centura Bank, Buxton, NC 27920.

Anniebell Harris Mitchell

Shiloh, NC - Anniebell Harris Mitchell, age 81, of 1450 South 343, Shiloh, NC, died Wednesday, February 5, 2003 at her residence. She was born in Camden, NC, daughter of the late Sanford and Janie Burgess Harris. She was the widow of the late Edgar Swindell Mitchell, Sr. and a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, Old Trap, NC.

Mrs. Mitchell is survived by two sons; Bryan Harris Mitchell of Jacksonville, FL, and Edgar Lee Mitchell of Kitty Hawk, NC; two brothers, Pete Burgess Harris of Norfolk, VA, and Thomas Richard Harris of Old Trap, NC; four grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Saturday, February 8, 2003 at 11:00 AM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. David Moehring officiating.

Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday evening from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM, also following the service in the lobby of the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to Albemarle Hospice, PO Box 189, Elizabeth City, NC 27907-0189. The family request that no food be taken to the home. Kianna Nicole & Brianna Denise Mitchell

COROLLA, NC - KIANNA NICOLE & BRIANNA DENISE MITCHELL, stillborn twins died Wednesday, November 19, 2003 in a Norfolk, Va. hospital. Parents of the twins are Corey Mitchell of Kill Devil Hills and Lauren Stillman of Corolla.

Besides their parents the twins are survived by a brother, Isaiah Stillman of Corolla; Maternal grandparents, Carla and David DigRugilliers of Corolla and Paternal grandparents, Elise and Terry Choates of Kill Devil Hills.

No services are scheduled at this time.

Rodger Moore

Rodger Allen Moore, age 75, of 1209 Toxey Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died at his residence on Saturday, March 8, 2003. Born in Kinston, NC, he was the son of the late Saul E. and Bettie Wilcox Moore, and the husband of Yevon Taylor Toxey Moore of the residence. He retired from the U.S. Navy after 20 years, as an Air Control 1st Class, and from the Norfolk Navy Shipyard. He was a Baptist, a member of Eureka Masonic Lodge #317 AF and AM, a member of VFW Post 6060, a member of the Pigeon Club, and a fisherman.

Besides his wife, Mr. Moore is survived by three step-sons Gaither Toxey, Wayne Toxey and Buddy Toxey all of Elizabeth City, NC; four sisters Betty Jean Johnson of Kinston, NC, Janice Kornegay of Mount Olive, NC, Ida Moore of Staunton, VA, and Weta Austin of Blackstone, VA, several grandchildren, and several great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted on Tuesday, March 11, 2003 at 11:00 AM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Argie Neal Wilcox. Burial will be in New Hollywood Cemetery, with Military Rites and Masonic Rites. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday evening from 7:00 to 9:00 PM, and at other times at the residence.

Neva Curles Moffitt

Neva Mae Curles Moffitt, age 63, of Elizabeth City, NC died at 8:20 PM on Tuesday, September 2, 2003, in Sentara Nursing Center, Barco, NC. She was born in Roper, NC; daughter of Lillie Mae Hassell Curles of Elizabeth City, NC, and the late Woodrow Wilson Curles and was the widow of William Groves Moffitt. Mrs. Moffitt delivered The Virginian Pilot for many years and was a charter member of Olivet Lakes Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Besides her mother, Mrs. Moffitt is survived by a daughter, Constance “Connie” Kemp of Kill Devil Hills, NC; a brother, Gordon Curles of Elizabeth City, NC; and two sisters, Clara Curles Davis of Hertford, NC and Frances Curles Davis of Manteo, NC.

A funeral service will be conducted on Friday, September 5, at 11:00 AM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, NC with Rev. Ray Archer officiating. Burial will be in New Hollywood Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday evening from 7:00 until 8:30 PM, immediately following the service in the lobby of the funeral home and at other times at the residence of her mother, 805 W. Elizabeth St., Elizabeth City, NC.

Lorna Hull McPherson

Lorna Hull McPherson, 87, of 1408 Brothers Drive, Elizabeth City, NC died Friday, September 26, 2003. She was born in Whitney, Idaho on March 10, 1916, to the late Alvin C. and Ella Maughan Hull. Mrs. McPherson attended Utah State University where she majored in home economics and later fulfilled a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints to the Eastern States Mission. There she met her late husband of 49 years, Arthur Alvin McPherson, and together they were instrumental in establishing and promoting the growth of the first ward in North Carolina for the Mormon Church. She was actively involved in the auxiliaries of the church and was president of the Relief Society Women’s Organization on a ward and regional level for thirty seven years. She and her husband served an eight year mission in the Washington, D.C. Mormon Temple. She took great pride in her Mormon pioneer heritage, which led to her involvement in genealogy, church history, and becoming a member of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers.
She was a devoted wife, mother, and homemaker.

Mrs. McPherson is survived by four daughters, Lorna Gayle Cannon and husband Tom, Maryella McPherson, and Linda Alison McPherson, all of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Geraldine M. Weeks and husband, Frank, of Elizabeth City, NC; three sons, Arthur Alvin McPherson, Jr., and wife Peggy, Robert Weston McPherson and wife Sandra, all of Elizabeth City, NC, and Oliver Lee McPherson and wife Nancy, of Salt Lake City, Utah; one sister, Ella H. Farnsworth of Phoenix, Arizona; two brothers, Harold Maughan Hull of Preston, Idaho and Russell Maughan Hull of Elizabeth City, NC; 25 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Alvin C. Hull, Dean Maughan Hull, Keith Maughan Hull and Robert McCellan Hull, and two grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted Monday, September 29, 2003 at 11:00 AM in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints under the direction of Bishop David Pritchard. A family burial will be held later. The family will receive friends and relatives in the church social hall immediately following the funeral service and at other times at the residence. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel. 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC is in charge of arrangements.

DORIS SPENCE McPHERSON LUNDELL
Pasquotank County native

Doris Spence McPherson Lundell, 85, formerly of Carter Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died Friday, October 3, 2003, in Guardian Care Nursing Home. She was born in Pasquotank County, NC to the late John Ambrose and Zelda Temple Spence and was the widow of Samuel Arthrur McPherson, Jr. and Pern Andrew Lundell. Mrs. Lundell was a retired beautician, a homemaker, a member of First United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women and the Elizabeth City Chapter #44, Order of the Eastern Star.

She is survived by two sons, Samuel A. McPherson, III and wife, Judith of Poquoson, VA and John Allan McPherson and wife, Ann of Kill Devil Hills, NC; two sisters, Mary Louise Chappell of Elizabeth City, NC and Norma Dean Whitehurst of Hertford, NC; one brother, Bobby Ray Spence of Virginia Beach, VA; five grandchildren and five great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Haywood and Aubrey Spence.

Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, October 5, 2003, at 3:00 PM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Clyde Denny. Burial with Eastern Star Rites will follow at West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will greet friends and relatives in the Asbury Room of First United Methodist Church immediately following the graveside service. A visitation will be at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, NC on Saturday from 7:00 to 8:30 PM and at other times the family will be at the residence of Calvin and Mary Chappell, 109 Country Club Drive, Elizabeth City, NC. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church Fellowship Class, P. O. Box 401, Elizabeth City, NC 27907 or to the Alzheimer’s Association, c\o Axie White, 105 Rosedale Drive, Elizabeth City, NC 27909.
