Lloyd Thomas “Tommy” Meads
Pasquotank County Native

Lloyd Thomas “Tommy” Meads, age 51, of 706 Riverside Ave., Elizabeth City, NC died Monday, March 10, 2003 in Elizabeth City, NC. He was born in Pasquotank County, NC, son of the late William Henry and Bessie Ann Lane Meads.

Mr. Meads is survived by a son, Lloyd Thomas “Buddy” Meads, Jr. and fiancé Brianna Perry of Hertford, NC; a grandson, Colton Thomas Meads of Hertford, NC; six sisters, Annette Meads Sawyer of Rocky Mount, NC, Latitcia Meads Lindbuckler of Hertford, NC, Judith Meads Overman, Linda Meads Griffin and Alice Meads Redding all of Elizabeth City, NC, and Amy Meads Chappell of Raleigh, NC.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, March 13, 2003 at 2:00pm in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, with the Revs. Archie Callahan and Chap Chappell officiating. Burial will be in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Following the service the family will receive friends in the lobby of the funeral home and at other times at the residence of Dr. Marshall and Alice Redding, 914 Riverside Ave, Elizabeth City, NC.

Selvie Meads

Selvie Jabe Meads, Sr., age 73, of 612 Meadstown Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died Saturday, December 6, 2003, at his residence with his family by his side after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Pasquotank County, NC, he was the son of the late Jabe B. Meads and Beulah Mae Cartwirght Meads.

He served in the U.S. Army and was a combat veteran of the Korean War having served in 1950-1951. Mr. Meads was awarded the Bronze Star for valor and two Purple Hearts for wounds received in combat. He retired from the Coast Guard Civil Service after twenty-nine years of service in 1987 and was a lifetime member of the William Clarence Jackson VFW Post # 6060.

He leaves behind and will be greatly missed by his wife Essie Mae of fifty two years; a daughter, Robin Meads Weaver, and husband Doug, of Bridgewater, VA; two sons, Selvie J. Meads, Jr., of Elizabeth City, NC, and Michael G. Meads of Wake Forest, NC; a sister, Fern Meads Bryant, and husband Kirby, of Chesapeake, VA; seven grandchildren, Jason Meads and wife Cherie, Jordan Weaver, Kelsey Weaver, Nicholas Meads, Andrew Meads, Katie Meads, and Jamie Wendling; and two great grandchildren, Jeremy Meads and Justin; a daughter-in-law, Yvonne Meads of Malvern, PA; and his English Setter “Lady.” He was predeceased by two sisters, Ruth White and Dacie White.

A funeral service with full military honors will be Monday, December 8, 2003, at 2:00 PM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Bob Crisp officiating. Burial will be in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday from 6:00 to 7:30 PM at the funeral home and in the lobby of the funeral home immediately after the service and at other times at the residence. Memorial donations may be made to the Albemarle Hospice, PO Box 189, Elizabeth City, NC 27907-0189.

WALTER J. MEADS
Avid foxhunter

Walter J. Meads, 75, of 802 Lake Road, Hertford, NC died Wednesday morning, July 28, 2004, in the Albemarle Hospital. He was born in Pasquotank County, NC to the late Elihu and Allie Morris Meads. He retired as a supervisor from IXL after 28 years. Mr. Meads was a lifetime member of the Albemarle Houndsman Association, a member of the Dry Ridge Hunt Club and Weeksville Hunting Club. He was an avid foxhunter and loved the outdoors.

Mr. Meads is survived by his wife, Dianne Dail Meads of the home, one daughter Sandra Meads of Shiloh, NC; six sons, Walter Ray Meads and wife, Jo, Keith Meads and wife, Geraldine, Alan Meads and wife, Kathy, Chris Meads and wife Sylvia, Ted Meads and wife Missy all of Elizabeth City, NC and Rex Meads and wife, Gloria of Kitty Hawk, NC. He is also survived by two step daughters, Wendy Lowe and husband, Buddy and Jenny Boyce and husband, Richie all of Hertford, NC; a step son, Peanut Parker and wife, Kirby of Sunbury, NC; two sisters, Lena Parker and Elsie Nixon both of Elizabeth City, NC. Also surviving are twelve grandchildren, Jason Meads, Lisa Meads, Leonard Meads, Amber Meads, Eric Meads, Kyle Meads, Everett Meads, Zack Meads all of Elizabeth City, Jay Meads and wife, Laura, Walter Alan Meads, all of Hertford, NC, Ryan Meads and Jonathan Meads both of Kitty Hawk, NC; five step grandchildren, Josh Lowe, Ben Lowe, Dustin Boyce, Lanie Boyce all of Hertford, NC and Pierce Parker of Sunbury, NC; three great grandchildren, Cody Meads, Aaron Meads both of Edenton, NC and Jakob Meads of Hertford, NC. Mr. Meads was preceded in death by a sister, Margie Jones.

A graveside service will be conducted Friday, July 30, 2004, at 11:00am in the New Hollywood Cemetery by Rev. Stuart Meads. The family will receive friends and relatives Thursday evening from 7:00 until 8:30 at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City and at other times at their residence, 802 Lake Road, Hertford, NC. The family request that memorial gifts in lieu of flowers be made to Sandra Meads, % Lois Hassell, 2209 W. Main St., Elizabeth City, NC 27909.

Edwin Michael

Kill Devil Hills - Edwin Gayle Michael, 61, died on Friday, April 30, 2004 at his residence. Mr. Michael was born in Cabarrus, NC and was a retired Real Estate Broker. He was a graduate of Duke University and was a Protestant. Mr. Michael was the son of the late James Oscar Michael and the late Lela Moore Michael.

He is survived by two sons, Christopher Michael of Louisville, KY and Jeffrey Michael of Simi Valley, CA; one brother, Don Michael of China Grove, NC; his significant other, Karen Austin of Kill Devil Hills.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Susan Allums

Susan Elizabeth Martin Allums, 46, of 1700W. Ehringhaus St. died Tuesday, February 17, 2004, in Winslow Memorial Home. She was born in Florence, SC and was the daughter of Louise Chappell Martin of Elizabeth City and the late Gary L. Martin. Mrs. Allums was a former employee of the Newport News Shipyard & Dry Dock.

Besides her mother, she is survived by a sister, Karen Martin of Elizabeth City; two brothers, Gary C. Martin of Suffolk, VA and John Martin of Elizabeth City; a niece, Tiffany Louise Hamrick and a nephew, John Mitchell Hamrick both of Elizabeth City, NC.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, February 19, 2004, at 7:00pm in the Twiford Memorial Chapel. Burial will be in the New Hollywood Cemetery. The family will receive friends and relatives in the lobby of the funeral home immediately following the service and at other times at the residence of her mother, Louise Martin, 1125 Azalea Trail, Elizabeth City, NC. MARTHA BERRY MIDGETT
Pasquotank Co. Native

Martha Berry Midgett, 91, of 701 Cedar Street, Elizabeth City, NC died Monday, May 26, 2003, at 7:10pm in the Ashton Woods Nursing Home, Atlanta, GA. She was born in Elizabeth City, NC to the late Milton W. and Sophia Dozier Berry and was the widow of the late A. Parker Midgett. She formerly taught high school English and French in Franklin, VA. Mrs. Midgett was a member of the City Road United Methodist Church, Golden Circle Sunday School Class and the Sunshine Ladies Circle.

She is survived by a daughter, Carole Sawyer, and husband, Bruce, of Dunwoody, GA., a son, Richard Morgan, and his wife, Tracey, of Elizabeth City, a stepson, Robert P. Midgett, and his wife Janet, of Greensboro, NC; six grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be conducted Saturday, June 7, 2003, at 2:00pm in the Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, NC by Rev. Charles McKenzie. Burial will be in the Hollywood Cemetery. The family will be at the residence. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to City Road United Methodist Church, P. O. 535, Elizabeth City, NC 27907. Twiford Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Katherine S. McPherson

Katherine Scott McPherson, 91 of 901 Parsonage Street, Elizabeth City, NC died Tuesday, July 8, 2003 in the Guardian Care Nursing Home. She was born in Pasquotank County to the late John and Louie Stafford Scott and was the widow of the late Grady Glenn McPherson. Mrs. McPherson was a member of the First Christian Church.

She is survived by four daughters, Jeweldean Jasielum of Elizabeth City, Mary Glenn Luton of Roper, NC, Darlene Wambles of Pinellas Park, Fl, and Gayle McPherson of Chuckey, TN; six grandchildren and three great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Grady Glenn McPherson, Jr.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, July 12, 2003, at 2:00pm in the Twiford’s Memorial Chapel by Rev. Roland Cooper. Burial will be in the Hollywood Cemetery. The family will receive friends and relatives in the lobby of the funeral home immediately following the funeral service. Twiford Funeral Home, 405 E. Charles “Charlie” McCuen
Native of Manassas, VA

Charles “Charlie” Edward McCuen, 69, of 102 Pinewood Acres Drive, Powells Point, NC, died Saturday October 2, 2004, at his home. Mr. McCuen was born in Manassas, VA, and was the husband of Aleene S. McCuen of the residence, and the son of the late John McCuen and Elizabeth Corum McCuen. He was veteran of the U. S. Army, a retired construction and maintenance employee having worked at the Prince William Library in Manassas, VA, and was the former maintenance manager with the Oceanside Court Motel in Nags Head, NC.

Besides his wife he is survived by a stepson, Terry Alan Taylor of Timberville, VA; a stepdaughter, Toni Gale Taylor Eversole of Nokesville, VA; a brother, Ronald McCuen of Manassas, VA; seven step-grandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC, is serving the McCuen family.

Vincent Carl Beacham

Colington - Vincent Carl Beacham, 39, died Sunday, June 27, 2004 at the Outer Banks Hospital.

Vince was born in Manteo, NC. He occasionally attended the Outer Banks Worship Center and was the son of Sylvia Beacham of Colington.

Besides his mother, he is survived by one sister, Braunda Perry of Kill Devil Hills; two brothers, Travis Tillett of Colington and Corley Tillett of Colington; his maternal grandfather, Carl Beacham, Sr. of Colington; he was preceded in death by one brother, Pat Perry, Jr.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Outer Banks Worship Center on Thursday, July 1, 2004 at 2:00 PM. Burial will take place in the Hilltop Cemetery in Colington. The family will receive friends at Twiford’s Colony Chapel, Manteo, Wednesday, June 30, 2004 from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM. The family will be at the home Carl Beacham Sr., 1513 Colington Road at other times.

Etta Sawyer McPherson
McPherson’s Grocery Owner

Mrs. Etta Sawyer McPherson, age 85, of 855 North 343, Camden, NC, died Monday, June 16, 2003, at her residence. Mrs. McPherson, a native of Currituck County, was the widow of Gus Woodrow McPherson, Sr., and the daughter of the late Talmadge Berry Sawyer and Adelia Sanderlin Sawyer. She was the owner of McPherson’s Grocery and a member of Geneva Baptist Church.

Mrs. McPherson is survived by a daughter, Doris Hassell of Camden, NC; three sons, John McPherson, Gus Woodrow McPherson, Jr., and Edwin McPherson all of Camden, NC; a brother, Robert Sawyer of Elizabeth City, NC; twenty grandchildren; thirty one great grandchildren; and five great great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, Thursday, June 19, 2003, at 2:00 PM with the Rev. F. Joe Griffith officiating. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7:00 to 8:30 PM at the funeral home and at other times at the residence.

Paula McCord

Currituck, NC - Paula H. McCord, “Memaw”, 50, of Currituck, NC, died Tuesday, September 24, 2002 at Albemarle Hospital. Born in Wake County, NC, she was the daughter of Hazel R. Harmon and the late Claxton P. Harmon.

Paula was a loving wife, mother, and friend. She touched many lives with her kindness. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

She is survived by her husband, Dennis “Eddie” McCord; a daughter, Beth Williams and her husband Rusty; a son, Kevin McCord and his wife Alexis; and two grandchildren, Justin McCord and Grant Williams all of Currituck.

A funeral service will be conducted on Friday, September 27, 2002 at 2:00 pm at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with Minister Dennis Crehan officiating. Burial will follow in Moyock Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 7:00 to 8:30 pm and at other times at the residence.

Daniel Woodrow “Woodie” Beals, Sr.
Native of Elizabeth City, NC

Daniel Woodrow “Woodie” Beals, Sr., age 73, of 116 Shipyard Road, Camden, NC, died Monday, April 26, 2004 in Chowan Hospital. He was a native of Elizabeth City, NC, and son of the late Ervin Roosevelt Beals and Gladys Sawyer Beals, and was the husband of Faye Bartlett Beals of the residence. Mr. Beals was a retired Captain with the Elizabeth City Fire Department after 31 years of service, June 1961 – February 1990, and a member of Camden United Methodist Church.

Besides his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Joy B. Rhodes and her husband, Albert, and Judy B. Johnson and her husband, Elwood, both of Elizabeth City, NC, and Tighe B. Simons of Ashville, NC; one son, Daniel Beals, Jr. and his wife Susan of Elizabeth City, NC; and a daughter in law, Debbie Beals of Upper Marlboro, MD; one step son, Todd Harrison of Camden, NC; one sister, Louise B. Stone of Hertford, NC; three half sisters, Brenda Conner of Corpus Christi, TX, Connie Whitley of Hertford, NC, and Sandy Sawyer of Camden, NC; one brother, Robert Elvin Beals of Denver, CO; one half brother, Michael Douglas Beals of Corpus Christi, TX; five grandchildren, two step grandsons, three great grandchildren, and special family friends, the Victor Allen family of Pensacola, FL. Mr. Beals was predeceased by one son, Kenneth Leroy Beals, and one sister, Doris B. Warden.

A memorial service will be Friday, April 30, 2004, at 4:00 PM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. David Moehring and Rev. Mike Duffer officiating. The family will receive friends at the residence, 116 Shipyard Road, Camden, NC and at the home of the daughter, Joy and Albert Rhodes, 707 Wareham Street, Elizabeth City, NC. Memorial donations may be made to Camden United Methodist Church Building Fund, 188 NC Highway 343, Camden, NC 27921, or to the charity of one’s choice. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Mary McCoy

Mary Dorothy McCoy, age 72, of 149 Cartwright Road, South Mills, NC, died Thursday, December 18, 2003, at her residence. Ms McCoy, a native of Camden, was the daughter of the late George W. McCoy, Jr., and Irene Sawyer McCoy. She was a Methodist and a homemaker.

Ms McCoy is survived by one sister, Kathleen Batten of Clayton, NC; four brothers, Roy L. McCoy of the residence, Charles “C. E.” McCoy of South Mills, NC, William E. McCoy of Clayton, NC, and Robert H. McCoy of Lewisville, TX.

A funeral service will be Sunday, December 21, 2003, at 2:00 PM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC, with the Rev. Jim Krepps officiating. Burial will be in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the lobby immediately after the service and at other times at the residence.

Sandy McBride

Grandy, NC - Sandra “Sandy” Barnes McBride, 60, died at her residence on Thursday, April 15, 2004. Mrs. McBride was born in Courtland, NY, was a supervisor in food service and was a Protestant. She was the daughter of the late Carl Ivan Barnes and Marjorie Chaffee Barnes of Grandy and the wife of James “Jim” McBride also of Grandy.

Besides her mother and husband, she is survived by one daughter, Joyce Brisson and husband Norman in Lakeland, FL; one sister, Virginia Ann Warren of Ogdensburg, NY; her mother-in-law, Anna Warne of Lodi, NY; special friends, Arlene and Wayne Randall of Kill Devil Hills.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Robert Reuben Mawson
Native of Philadelphia, PA

Robert Reuben Mawson, age 75, of 1210 Crescent Drive, Elizabeth City, NC, died Tuesday, October 28, 2003, at Guardian Care Nursing Home. Mr. Mawson, a native of Philadelphia, PA, was the husband of Vera Linnae Anderson Mawson of the residence and the son of the late Norman T. Mawson and Doris Mack Mawson. He was a retired electronic engineer, a WW II Veteran of the U.S. Navy V12 Air Cadet, a member of Christ Episcopal Church, a U.S.C.G Auxiliary volunteer for ten years, and a former member of the Association of Old Crows.

Besides his wife he is survived by a son, Thomas Carl Mawson of Herndon, VA; four sisters, Faith Hoffman and Carol Joersz both of Bremerton, WA, Nancy Keddy of Grand Junction, CO, and Lynette Baughman of Sequim, WA; and two grandchildren, Jennifer Michelle Mawson McClelland and Thomas David Mawson.

A memorial service will be at Christ Episcopal Church, Saturday, November 1, 2003 at 10:00 AM with the Rev. Fredricka Steenstra officiating. The family will receive friends at the Parish Hall following the service and suggests memorial gifts to the Alzheimer’s Association, % Axie White, 105 Rosedale Drive, Elizabeth City, NC 27909. Marcelle Nicholson Mattocks
Native of Reidsville, NC

Marcelle Nicholson Mattocks, age 89, of 901 South Halstead Blvd., Elizabeth City, NC, died Wednesday, January 8, 2003 in Guardian Care Nursing Home. She was born in Alamance County, NC, daughter of the late Ben and Rochelle Nicholson and the widow of Averitte Nash Mattocks, Sr., who preceded her in death in 1984. Mrs. Mattocks was a 50 year residence of Reidsville, NC, a retired school teacher, she was the creator of hand made originals by Marcelle, which is hand made ceremic dogwood jewelry.

Mrs. Mattocks is survived by a daughter, Pat Trimpi and husband John of Elizabeth City, NC; a son, Nash Mattocks, Jr. and wife Ruth Shauer of Wirtz, VA; four grandchildren, John, Anne, and Ben Trimpi, and Susan Paul; and three great grandsons. She was predeceased by a sister, Iva Nicholson Broze and a grandson, Matt Mattocks.

A memorial graveside service will be conducted on Sunday, January 12, 2003 at 2:00 pm in Chatam Friends Meeting Cemetery in Snow Camp, N.C.. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Steven Lee Matlock

Elizabeth City, NC - Steven Lee Matlock, 49, of 112 Chadburn Avenue, Elizabeth City, NC, died Monday, January 27, 2003 at Albemarle Hospital. He was born in Phoenix City, AL to the late Thomas and Geraldine Henderson Matlock. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army having served in the Vietnam War and was a retired investigator with the Military Police. He was a life member of the D. A. V. and was a member of Faith Baptist Church.

Mr. Matlock is survived by his wife, Amanda Adkins Matlock of the home and two children.

A funeral service with military honors will be conducted on Thursday, January 30, 2003 at 11:00 AM at Faith Baptist Church by Pastor Al Thompson. Burial will follow at New Hollywood Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel on Wednesday from 6:00 to 7:30 PM and at other times at the residence.

Charles N. Mathews, Sr.

Chesapeake – Charles Norris Mathews Sr., 81, died Feb. 18, 2004 at his residence. Mr. Mathews was born in South Mills, NC to the late Agnes Norris and Phillip Moore Mathews. He was a veteran having served in the U.S. Navy during WWII, and later worked for the Naval Shipyard as a supervisor in the Boiler Shop. Mr. Mathews was a member of Great Bridge UMC, Great Bridge Masonic Lodge #257, the Scottish Rite Bodies, and the Khedive Temple.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Jean Williams Mathews; daughter, Meredith M. Holland of Rocky Mount, NC; sons, Charles N. Mathews, Jr. of Hyattsville, MD, James L. Mathews of Spotsylvania, VA, and Glenn M. Mathews and wife Sheila of Manhattan, KS; and six grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held on Saturday at 11 AM at Forrest Lawn Cemetery with the Reverend Bradley S. Dulaney officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, #20 Koger Center, Suite 233, Norfolk, VA 23502.
