Misa Kamata Mathews

CHESAPEAKE - Misa Kamata Mathews, 67, died July 14, 2003 at Chesapeake General Hospital. Mrs. Mathews was born in Japan to the late Sugi and Ryotaro Kamata. She was a homemaker and a member of the Sokagakai Sect. Mrs. Mathews was predeceased by her first husband, Yukio Kimura.

She is survived by one daughter, Akemi Mathews Rouse and her husband Jim of Chesapeake and one grandson, Nicholas Rouse of Chesapeake.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

Marvin Beard

Nags Head, NC - Mr. Marvin Davidson Beard III, age 71, of 8442A, Old Oregon Inlet Road, Nags Head, NC, died Tuesday, September 9, 2003, in Albemarle Hospital. Mr. Beard was born in Los Angeles, CA, the son of the late Marvin Davidson Beard, Jr. and Eula Beard, and was the husband of Judith Ralphy Beard of the residence.

Marvin was a journalist for many years, having graduated from the University of Kentucky. He worked in many areas with the Associated Press and newspapers. He was at one time the youngest bureau chief for the AP. He came to the Outer Banks in 1980 to be the first editor and general manager for the Outer Banks Current. He started Outer Banks Resort Rentals, a timeshare rental and resale business in 1984, eventually being known as “The King of Timeshare”. He served with the Marines during the Korean War. An avid baseball fan, he participated in the Baltimore Orioles Fantasy Camp in 1993. He and his wife were supporters for the local Dare Devil team and were a host family for the past several years.

Besides his wife, Mr. Beard is survived by two daughters, Lucy Beard of Sarasota, FL, and Amy Parcels and husband, Mike, of Bradenton, FL; two step-daughters, Jane Parks and husband, Gordon, of Richmond, IN; and Elizabeth Woody and husband, John, of Seattle, WA; one step-son, James Eberhart and wife, Alva, of Kirkwood, MO; eight grandchildren; and one great grandchild. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Ann Beard.

A memorial service will be held Friday, September 19, 2003, at 3:00 PM at the Outer Banks Beach Club gazebo on Clark Street, Milepost 9, Kill Devil Hills.

David Martin Beasley

Elizabeth City, NC - David Martin Beasley, 18 months, of 401 Brite Avenue, Elizabeth City, NC died Thursday, February 20, 2003. He is survived by his parents, John Daniel and Elizabeth Maness Beasley of the home; a sister, Abigail Elizabeth Beasley of the home; a maternal grandmother, Florida Maness of the home; paternal grandparents, Lloyd and Mary Beasley of Elizabeth City, NC; maternal great grandparents, Clifton and Betsy Carawan of Plymouth, NC; two aunts and five uncles. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Sonny Martin Maness.

A funeral service will be conducted on Monday, February 24, 2003 at 10:00 AM at Forest Park Church of God by Pastor Scott Neal. A private burial will be at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church immediately following the service and at other times at the residence.

Eleanor Marshall

Eleanor Goodwin Marshall, 88, of 929 Halstead Blvd., Elizabeth City died Thursday morning, November 20, 2003, in the Albemarle Hospital. She was born in Elizabeth City to late William Benjamin and Rose Parsons Goodwin and was the widow of the late John Harris Marshall. Mrs. Marshall was a member of the First United Methodist Church.

She is survived by a daughter, Anne Marshall of Boerne, Texas, seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Also, surviving are several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Marshall was preceded in death by a daughter, Martha John Brady.

A graveside service will be conducted Monday, November 24, 2003, at 11:00am in the Old Hollywood Cemetery by Rev. Clyde Denny. The family request in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the Samaritan’s Purse, P. O. Box 3000, Boone, NC 28607 or to Feed the Children, % Larry Jones, P. O. Box 36, Oklahoma City, OK. 73101-0036. The family will receive friends and relatives immediately following the service at the graveside. Twiford Funeral Home, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, NC is in charge of arrangements.

Norris R. Marriner

Norris Ray Marriner, age 72 of 395 Hog Neck Rd., Hertford, NC died Friday, September 05, 2003 at Guardian Care Nursing Home. He was born in Martin Co, NC; son of the late Charles Webster and Della Mae Hufton Marriner and was the husband of Viva Bridgeman Marriner of the residence. He was a retired garment cutter and served in the U. S. Army.

Besides his wife, Mr. Marriner is survived by a daughter, Sheila Douglas of Elizabeth City, NC; a son, Michael Marriner of Hertford, NC; two brothers, Bill Marriner of Camden, NC and John Marriner of Elizabeth City, NC; and six grandchildren.

A funeral service will be conducted on Monday, September 8, 2003 at 1:00 PM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, NC with Pastor Ronald B. Gardner officiating. Burial will be in New Hollywood Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday evening from 6:00 until 7:30, immediately following the service in the lobby of the funeral home, and at other times at the residence.

Glen Gene Beavers
Native of Amonate, WV

Glen Gene Beavers, age 64, of 113 Shore Drive, Shiloh, NC, died Tuesday, October 21, 2003, in the Albemarle Hospital. Mr. Beavers, a native of Amonate, WV, was the husband of Billie Faye Forehand Beavers of the residence and the son of the late Lloyd Beavers and Thelma Hurley Beavers. He graduated from Big Creek High School in War, WV, and attended Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA. He was retired from Dominion NC Power after thirty-three years, and a veteran of the US Army. He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Elizabeth City, NC, Masonic Lodge # 196 in Virginia Beach, VA, a 32 Degree Scottish Rite Mason, Valley of New Bern, Sudan Shrine Temple of New Bern and the Albemarle Craftsman’s Guild.

Besides his wife he is survived by a daughter, Margaret Beavers of Williamsburg, VA; a son, Jackie L. Beavers, and wife Margie, of Spindale, NC; a sister, Karen Laney of Randallstown, MD; three brothers, Kenneth Beavers of Leonardtown, MD, Noel Beavers of Georgetown, TX, and Dwayne Beavers of Bartley, WV; and a granddaughter, Faith Beavers of Spindale, NC. He was predeceased by a brother, Danny Beavers.

Funeral services will be Friday, October 24, 2003, at 2:00 PM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC, with the Rev. Fredricka Steenstra officiating. Burial will be in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday, October 23, 2003 from 7:00 to 8:30 at the funeral home, after the service in the funeral home lobby, and at other times at the residence.

Etta P. Mann

Mrs. Etta Pierce Mann, 90, formerly of Northside Road, Elizabeth City, NC died Monday, October 14, 2002 at Carolina Living in Elizabeth City. She was a native of South Mills, NC; daughter of the late Charlie Henry and Narcissia Laurietta Stewart Pierce and was the widow of Rex Mann.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Elizabeth City, NC and retired in 1973 from Hopkins Brothers as a bookkeeper.

Mrs. Mann is survived by a step daughter, Jean M. Wallace, four step grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be conducted on Wednesday, October 16, 2002 at 2:00 pm in New Hollywood Cemetery with the Rev. Glenn Greenway officiating. The family will receive friends at the residence of Audrey Harris, 1690 Morgan’s Corner Road, Elizabeth City, NC. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church Building Fund, P. O. Box 401, Elizabeth City, NC 27907.

Jessie Mae Brower Mann

Nags Head, NC - Mrs. Jessie Mae Brower Mann, died Sunday at Britthaven in Nags Head. She was born in Pasquotank County, NC daughter of the late Joe Brower, Sr. and the late Mary Ann Whitson Brower and was the widow of Guy Lee Mann.

Mrs. Mann is survived by two brothers, Elbert Brower and Paul Brower, both of Elizabeth City, NC. A special niece Carol Umphlett and many other nieces and nephews

A graveside service will be conducted on Saturday at 2:00 o’clock in New Hollywood Cemetery by Buck White.

The family will be at the residence of Mr. & Mrs. Elbert Brower 1603 Penny Drive Elizabeth City NC and request that in lieu of flowers Memorial Donations be made to the American Diabetes Association.

Iris Manuel

SULPHUR, LA - IRIS MIDGETT MANUEL, 68, of Sulphur, La and former resident for many years of Manteo, died, Sunday, August 24, 2003, in Sulphur, La. Mrs. Manuel was born in Norfolk, Va and was a homemaker and member of Mount Olivet United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Manuel was the daughter of the late Vance L. and Ina Midgett Cudworth and the wife of Dan Manuel.

Besides her husband surviving are one daughter; Tina Marie Richie of Fort Apache, Az, three sons; Lindsey Midgett, Jr of Lake Charles, La, Jeffrey Lee Midgett of Manteo and Michael Allen Midgett, three sisters; Lois Saunders of Manteo, Wilma Scarborough and Jean C. Daniels both of Wanchese. one brother; Louis Cudworth of Bel Aire, Md and six grandchildren.

A celebration of life will be held Saturday, August 30, 2003, at 11:00 a.m. in Mount Olivet United Methodist Church by the Rev. George Speake. Burial will be in Cudworth Cemetery. Friends may join the family at Twiford’s Funeral Home, Friday, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Twiford’s Colony Chapel Manteo is assisting the Manuel family.

Robert Lyle Manville

KILL DEVIL HILLS, NC - ROBERT LYLE MANVILLE, 51, of Kill Devil Hills died Saturday, January 24, 2004 at his residence. Mr. Manville was born in Oceanside, CA and was a surfboard shaper for U.S Fiberglass. He was the son of Mary Litschert Antonucci of Kill Devil Hills, NC and the late Donald Earl Antonucci.

Memorial services will be scheduled at a later date.

Margareni S. Carter

Mrs. Margareni Shafer Carter, age 80, 3907 Caratoke Highway, Currituck, NC, died Monday, August 2, 2004 at Sentara Barco Nursing Home. Mrs Carter, was born in Atlantic City, NJ; daughter of the late William Shafer and Margerite Elaine Hall Shafer and was the widow of Edward R. Carter, Sr..

Mrs. Carter is survived by a daughter, Diane Wallace, and husband Timothy of Jarvisburg, NC; a son, Edward R. Carter, Jr., of Chesapeake, VA; a sister, Laura V. Bowman of Florida; and three grandchildren, Ronnie G. Baker, Jr., Codie Baker, and Tina Maire Carter.

A graveside funeral service will be Wednesday at 11:00 AM at Olive Branch Cemetery in Portsmouth, VA, with the Rev. Rev. Johnny McDonald officiating. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7:00 to 8:30 PM at Twiford’s Colonial Chapel, 929 Battlefield Blvd. South, Chesapeake, VA 23320. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Fred Markham

Elizabeth City, NC - Fred Markham III, age 77, of 110 Miller Lane, Elizabeth City, NC, and 4955 Pepper Circle B-103, Naples, FL, died Monday, August 11, 2003, at Albemarle Hospital. He was born in Pasquotank County, NC; son of the late Fred P. Markham, Jr. and Goldie Lister Markham and was the husband of Patricia Whitehurst Markham. He was a retired realtor.

Besides his wife, Mr. Markham is survived by one daughter, Deborah Borgman and husband, John, of Naples, FL; one son, John G. Byrd of Avon Park, FL; and one grandchild, Derrick Borgman of Naples, FL.

The body will be cremated and no services are planned at this time. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to one’s favorite charity.

Joseph Mangino

Joseph Mangino, 77, died Sunday, February 1, 2004 at a Nags Head nursing facility. Mr. Mangino was born in Vineland, NJ and was a retired machinist for Ingersoll Rand. He was a Veteran having served in the U.S. Navy during WWII, a former member of V.F.W and Teamsters 641. Mr. Mangino was the son of the late Samuel Mangino and the late Anna Mangino and the husband of Mildred Jane Coile Mangino of the home.

Besides his wife he is survived by three sons, Donald Mangino at the residence, Joseph Mangino of Fredericksburg, VA and Larry Mangino of Colorado Springs, CO; two sisters, Connie Dileo of Phoenix, AZ and Tina Romano of Elmwood Park, NJ and five grandchildren.

A Service of Remembrance will be held at Twiford’s Colony Chapel, Manteo, on Thursday, February 5, 2004 at 10:00 AM with Rev. Rick Lawrencesen officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Britthaven of Outer Banks, 430 W. Health Center Drive, Nags Head, NC 27959.

Twiford’s Funeral Home, Manteo, is assisting the family with these arrangements.

Meekins Mabel O.

Mabel Osborne Farrow Meekins, 86, died at her residence on Monday, November 10, 2003. Mrs. Meekins was born in Osborneville, NJ and was a homemaker. She was a member of the St. John’s United Methodist Church in Avon. She was the daughter of the late Albert L. and Mamie Burns Osborne and was the widow of Ervin M. Farrow and Reginald G. Meekins. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Everette Osborne and Albert L. Osborne.

Mrs. Meekins is survived by one daughter, Mary Jane Scarborough and husband, Curtis, three sons, Ervin Farrow and wife, Audrey, Charles C. Farrow and Leroy Farrow and wife, Barbara, all of Avon; ten grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, November 13, 2003 at 2:00 PM at St. John’s United Methodist Church with Rev. Susan Fitch-Slater and Rev. Herbert Hemingway officiating. Burial will follow in the Family Cemetery. The body will be placed in the church on Wednesday afternoon.

Archie E. Mac Donald
Native of Northfield, MN

Archie E. Mac Donald, age 65, of Powells Point, NC passed from this earthly life Monday afternoon to be with his Savior, Jesus Christ. He was born March 3, 1939 to Ruthella (Brown) and Donald Mac Donald. He was preceded in death by his parents. He grew up in Brattleboro, VT and Northfield, MN before becoming involved in the hardwood lumber business. Archie later spent many years in the La Crosse, WI area, most notably as owner of Mac Donald & Owen Lumber Company, before retiring to North Carolina. He was a veteran of the US Army.

One of Archie’s greatest loves was sharing the Word of God, and he found ample opportunity to teach and minister in a variety of settings. He served as Chairman of the Church at Bethany Evangelical Free Church in La Crosse, WI, as Chairman of the Deacon Body at Poplar Branch Baptist Church, as teacher in seminars and Bible studies, and was a licensed minister in the Baptist Church.

Archie is survived by his loving wife Zandra, and their children Heather (Mac Donald) & Gregory Blomberg of La Crosse, WI, Jeremy Casey, and Heather Casey of Atlanta, GA; grandson Jack Blomberg; and sister Mary Mac Donald of Prospect Heights, IL.

Friends are invited to participate in a celebration of Archie’s life which will be officiated by his longtime friend, Pastor Joe Bubar, and by Pastor Bill Thorn at Poplar Branch Baptist Church in Poplar Branch, NC at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 1, with viewing from 1:00- 2:00 p.m. at the church. There will be a time of fellowship and refreshments in the Fellowship Hall following the service. The family will receive friends at the home, 217 Riverlane Road, Powells Point, NC. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC is in charge of arrangements.

Donald B. MacIntyre

KILL DEVIL HILLS, NC - Donald B. MacIntyre, 88, passed away September 27th. Born March 22, 1916 in Pittsburgh, Pa, the son of the late Peter and Greta MacIntyre.

Mr. MacIntyre was a Shriner and a member of Toastmasters International, a member of the Kitty Hawk United Methodist Church and served in various community oriented services for the Town of Kill Devil Hills. He was a retired manager/industrial salesman for Harnischifeger.

Survivors include his widow Henrietta, sons Doug MacIntyre and wife Judy of Wickenburg, Arizona, Bruce MacIntyre and wife Donna of Clearwater Beach, Florida and Russell MacIntyre and wife Janie of Rocky Mount, N.C., grandchildren, Leslie Shannon, Lori MacIntyre, JR MacIntyre and wife Griselda, Kasey Meyer and husband Bill, Amanda MacIntyre and Scott ManIntyre, great-grandchildren, Austin, Hunter and Lily, his brother William MacIntyre and sister Helen Fischer. The family will receive friends Thursday from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Twiford Funeral Home Manteo.

A Celebration of Life service will be held Friday, October 1, 2004, at 11:00 a.m. at the Kitty Hawk United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Wesley Hospitality House 1129 Horseshoe Road, Elizabeth City, N.C. 27909 or the Residence Council at Britt Haven of the Outer Banks, 430 West Health Center Drive, Nags Head, N.C. 27959.

GEORGE W. MacKENZIE

Chesapeake - George MacKenzie, 77, beloved friend of Norma Chappell, passed away December 29th, 2003. George fought in WWII and served his country well. He will be missed by friends and relatives alike. Memorial services will be announced at a later date.

Mary MacKillop-Rosebrough

CHESAPEAKE – Mary MacKillop-Roseborugh, 84, died August 31, 2003 at St. Francis Nursing Center. Mrs. Rosebrough was born in Lowell, MA to the late George H. and Bridget O’Neil Jones. She was a member of the National Council of Catholic Women and former member of both St. Therese’s and Holy Angels Catholic Churches. Mrs. Rosebrough was predeceased by two husbands, Hugh MacKillop and Jesse Rosebrough.

She is survived by five daughters, Sister Miriam MacKillop OSF of Newport News; Ellen Cooke of Chesapeake, Bridget Ann MacKillop of German Town, MD, Christine Abbott of Houston, TX, Angela Howard of Portsmouth; three step children, Michael J. Rosebrough of Portsmouth, Linda Yates of Charleston, SC, and Rick Rosebrough of Albany, GA; two sisters, Ann Dwinell of Medford, MA, and Ellen Jones of Lowell, MA; a sister-in-law Margorie Jones of Clearwater, FL; and twelve grandchildren

A Mass of Resurrection will be held on Friday at 11:00am at Prince of Peace Catholic Church with Father Thomas J. Quinlan officiating. The family will receive friends at Twiford Colonial Chapel, Chesapeake on Thursday from 6:30pm until 7:30pm with a wake service following. In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made to The Bernadine Sisters Mission, 403 Allendale Rd., King of Prussia, PA 19406.

Barbara L. Maillet
Native of Pasquotank County, NC

Barbara L. Maillet, age 67, of 1172 Four Forks Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died Sunday, February 22, 2004 at her residence. Mrs. Maillet, a native of Pasquotank County, NC, was the widow of Ronald Larry Maillet and the daughter of the late Lonnie M. Spruill and Edna Spruill Spruill. She was a member of Faith Assembly of God in Hertford, NC.

Mrs. Maillet is survived by two daughters, Pam O’Dell of Mesa, AZ, and Rhonda Lynn of Elizabeth City, NC; four sons, James Wise, III of Gainesville, FL, John Wise, Lonnie Wise, and Jason Maillet, all of Elizabeth City, NC; a sister, Ruby Jenkins of Riceville, TN; three brothers, Lloyd Spruill and David Spruill both of Elizabeth City, NC, and Joe Spruill of Greensboro, NC; fifteen grand-children and four great grandchildren.

A graveside service will be Wednesday, February 25, 2004, at 11:00 AM in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Roland Cooper officiating. The family will receive friends at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. David Spruill, 1168 Four Forks Road, Elizabeth City, NC.
