Elijah "Eli" W. Lewis

Ocracoke - Elijah ”Eli” Wayne Lewis, 54, died on Sunday, August 22, 2004 at his residence. Mr. Lewis was born in Eastville, VA. He was the son of the late Steve Davis Lewis and the late Helen Styron Lewis.

He is survived by one sister, Suzanne Lewis Durivage and husband, Jay of Exton, PA; two brothers, William Lewis of Ocracoke, Sammy Lewis of West Hollywood, CA; two nieces, Katie and Lori Lewis; three nephews, Jacob Davis Durivage, Kenneth and Tony Lewis. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Steve Davis Lewis, Jr. and a nephew, Ryan Durivage.

A memorial service will be held at the Ocracoke United Methodist Church on Wednesday, August 25, 2004 at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Ocracoke Health Center and Ocracoke EMS, P.O. Box 543, Ocracoke, NC 27960. The family will receive friends at the “Gaskins Cottage”, 45 Mary Anns Drive, Ocracoke.

Johnie Lemuel Lilley
Native of Pungo, NC

Johnie Lemuel Lilley, age 89, of 107 Equestrian Drive, Shawboro, NC, died Wednesday, April 14, 2004, at his residence. He was born in Pungo, NC, the son of the late Johnie Lemuel Lilley and Mary Allen Lilley Cooper, and the husband of Madeline Hastings Lilley of the residence. Mr. Lilley was a retired rigger for Norfolk Ship Building and Dry Dock and was a member of the Portsmouth Assembly of God Church.

Mr. Lilley is survived by four daughters, Lois Stewart of Saucier, MS, Winnie Adams of Pantego, NC, Brenda McRobie of Dalton, GA, and Sandra Brasted of Shawboro, NC; three sons, Johnie Lilley, Jr., of Norfolk, VA, Rickey Lilley, Sr., of Farmville, VA, and Ronnie Lilley, Sr., of Shawboro, NC; one sister, Effie Cooper of Pantego, NC; twenty three grandchildren; thirty four great grandchildren; and ten great-great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be Saturday, April 17, 2004, at 2:00 PM in the Grandy Assembly of God Church with the Rev. Lee R. Moody officiating. Burial will be in Laurel Memorial Gardens Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, and immediately following the service at the church. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Audrey Peterson Lindsey

Audrey Peterson Lindsey, age 83 of 125 Blackbeard Drive, Elizabeth City, NC, died Saturday, March 1, 2003 at Moses Cone Extended Care, Greensboro, NC. She was born in Newbern, NC, daughter of the late William Haywood and Cora Lee FormyDuval Peterson and the widow of Wilbur Frank Lindsey, Sr. She was a member of Evangelical Methodist Church, a graduate of Newbern City High School, a graduate of Norfolk Business College, she was active in Elizabeth City Aglow, and participated in the Albemarle Crisis Pregnancy Center. Her prayers and her faithful witness have brought her family to saving faith in Jesus Christ.

Mrs. Lindsey is survived by a daughter, Sheila Lindsey Crittenden of Elizaeth City, NC; two sons, Wilbur Frank Lindsey, Jr. and William Michael Lindsey both of Greensboro, NC; thirteen grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, March 5, 2003 at 11:00 am in Evangelical Methodist Church with the Rev. Max Edwards officiating. Burial will follow in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday evening from 7:00 to 8:30 and at the residence at other times.

Stella Litchfield

Native of Tyrell County

Mrs. Stella Virginia Rhodes Litchfield, age 68, of 1607 East Street, Elizabeth City, NC, died Sunday, March 21, 2004, at the Albemarle Hospital. Mrs. Litchfield, a native of Tyrell County, was the widow of Guy Tucker Litchfield and the daughter of the late Rufus R. Rhodes and Martha Swain Rhodes. She was a retired seamstress from Chesson’s Department Store and a member of Cabin Swamp Church of Christ in Columbia.

She is survived by two sons, Curtis Lee Litchfield of Nags Head, NC, and Richard Clay Litchfield of Bowie, MD; three sisters, Doris Rhodes Oliver of Creswell, NC, Judy Rhodes Able and Betty Rhodes Hayes both of Columbia, NC; and two grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Thursday, March 25, 2004, at 2:00 PM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC, with Minister Thomas Biggs officiating. Burial will follow in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7:00 to 8:30 PM at the funeral home and at other times at the residence.

Steven Locklear

Powells Point - Steven Earl Locklear, 36, died Sunday, March 20, 2004 in Buxton. Mr. Locklear was born in Norfolk, VA and was self-employed in construction. He attended Grandy Assembly of God. He was the son of Roberta “Boe” Baggett King of Kill Devil Hills and the late John L. Locklear. He was the husband of Laurie LeBlanc Locklear of Powells Point.

Besides his wife and mother, he is survived by his step-father, Jimmy King of Kill Devil Hills; one daughter, one son, one sister and three brothers.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Grandy Assembly of God on Sunday at 4:00 PM with Pastor Lee Moody officiating. Burial will take place in the Austin Cemetery. Memorial Donations may be made to the Grandy Assembly of God, P.O. Box 795, Grandy, NC 27939.

Virginia Logan

DUCK, NC - VIRGINIA SHAW LOGAN, 91, of Manteo, NC died Thursday, January 8, 2004 in a Nags Head nursing home. Mrs. Logan, born in Flint, MI, was a retired Librarian and a member of St. Andrews by the Sea Episcopal Church. She was the daughter of the late Gainey C. M. and Bertha Thomas Shaw and was the widow of the late Leonard Gilmore Logan, Sr.

Mrs. Logan attended Michigan State University from 1930-1932, where she met her future husband, Leonard “Limpy” Logan, the football tem quarterback and student body president. Virginia was vice-president of the Sophomore class and joined Alpha Chi Omega sorority. She was a member of Eastern Star and, with her sister, opened The Broadway Coffee Shop in Flint Michigan after she was compelled to leave Michigan State during the depression. She attended Baker Business School and became secretary to the president of Fisher Body Corporation where she was elected president of the Industrial Girls Association and organized the Fisher Girl’s Riding Club. Virginia organized the St. Paul’s Evening Auxiliary, being selected the first president. She organized and was the first editor of Meyer’s School PTA News, a publication that exists to this date. She was a long-time Sunday school teacher in the Episcopal Church. Virginia was a Republican Committee Woman and was elected Majority Inspector in Pennsylvania. One of her goals of life was realized when she returned to college and graduated from Beaver College in Glenside, PA in 1968. She worked for Franklin Book Company, the Cheltenham School Board and High School Library advancing to the High School Library Para-Professional. She retired in 1977. Following the death of her husband, Leonard Logan, Sr. in 1981 she moved to Manteo where she resided until moving to Britthaven Nursing home last year after a fall. Virginia was an avid reader, crossword puzzle expert and bridge player. Her son, Leonard G. Logan, Jr. was a Manteo Attorney and now resides in Duck, NC, where he is proprietor of Elizabeth’s Café & Winery.

Mrs. Logan is survived by a son, Leonard G. Logan, Jr. of Duck, NC; five grandchildren, Sylvia Katherine “Kathy” Skomsky of FL, Richard C. “Ricky” Brake of Kitty Hawk, NC, Leonard G. “Gil” Logan, III of KY, Letitia “Tish” L. McCauley of FL, and Eric Raymond Logan of NC; seven great-grandchildren, Nathan Brake, Hunter Brake, Daniel Brake, Taylor Leigh Logan, Garrett Reed Logan, Jackson Paul Logan and Macy Sage McCauley.

A memorial service will be held at St. Andrews by the Sea Episcopal Church on Saturday, January 17, 2004 at 11:00 am, with the Rev. Charles E. B. Gill officiating. Memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 434 Fayetteville St. Mall, Two Hanover Square, Suite 1600, Raleigh, NC 27601, or to the Memorial Honor Program, POB 2680, N.Canton, OH 44720. All proceeds will benefit the state of NC.

Marion E. "Buddy" Lowry

KILL DEVIL HILLS, NC - MARION EDWARD “BUDDY” LOWRY, 61, of Kill Devil Hills, NC died Saturday, August 28, 2004, in Kill Devil Hills. Buddy was born in Weeksville, NC and was owner of Lowry Insurance Company, an independent sales associate exclusively for AFLAC. He was a member of Salem Baptist Church until confirmed on March 17, 1994, into the Episcopal Church. He was a member of St. Andrews by the Sea Episcopal Church, where he was a loyal member of the Vestry, a member of Cursillo, Men’s Interdenominational Fellowship of the Outer Banks, Episcopal Missionary Candidate with his wife, Susan, of the South American Missionary Society, past member of the Weeksville Lions Club, North Beach Rotary Club, Rotarian of the year 1992, past numerous services in the Outer Banks Chamber of Commerce, Head of the Advisory Council of the N.C. Aquarium in Manteo for the past 20 years, and was a member of the first graduating class of the College of the Albemarle.

He was formerly employed with East Carolina Bank in 1979, after relocating from Elizabeth City, where he worked, briefly, in banking. He was a former resident of Edenton from 1992 –1994 and was employed with Colony Tire Corp and became associated with AFLAC in January of 1994, and has been a dedicated representative in Dare County since then, loving his ministry of serving those who were in need.

Buddy had an outgoing spirit and never met a stranger. He loved so many people he knew and didn’t know.

He was the son of Annie Pendleton Lowry of Nixonton and the late Marion Kendrick Lowry who died in 1972. Besides his mother, Buddy is survived by his wife, Susan Blount Lowry and his mother-in-law, Dottie Blount of Point Pleasant, NJ. Other survivors include a son, Kent Lowry and wife, Cindy and their children, Ashton and Cade of Weeksville, NC, a daughter, Darlene Jones and husband, Jim and their children, Kiley and Kayla of Belvidere, NC, a step-son, Christian Powers and wife, Selina and their children, Alina, Kristin and Christian, Jr., step-son, Ricky Powers, all of Kill Devil Hills, NC, a sister, Judy Mansfield of Carthage, NC; three brothers, John Henry Lowry of Nixonton, David Pete Lowry of Weeksville and Clay Lowry of Raleigh; and numerous nieces and nephews, as well as grand-nieces and nephews and many honorary grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life will be held at St. Andrews by the Sea Episcopal Church on Wednesday, September 1, 2004 at 3:00 pm with the Rev. Charles E.B. Gill officiating. A reception will be held immediately following the service. Friends may also join the family at Twiford’s Funeral Home, Manteo, on Tuesday evening from 5:00 to 9:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the South American Missionary Society, the St. Andrews Discretionary Fund, or the Don Porcher Scholarship Fund, all in care of St. Andrews by the Sea, P.O. Russell Lundberg

Carolina Beach, NC - Russell Everett Lundberg, age 69, of Carolina Beach, NC, died Saturday, May 22, 2004 in the Lower Cape Fear Hospice Center in Wilmington, NC. He was born in Gardner, MA, and was the son of the late Hokan Rudolph Lundberg, and Marie Peterson Lundberg, and husband of the late Elizabeth Ann Nickerson Lundberg. He was a retired Master Chief E-9 with the U.S. Coast Guard.

He is survived by five sons, Steve Lundberg of Carolina Beach, NC, Andrew Lundberg, Jerry Williams, and his wife, Xanda of Elizabeth City, NC, Michael Williams of Houston, TX, and Scott Williams of Myrtle Beach, SC; two sisters, Arlene L. Briggs and her husband Ronald of Grandville, MI, and Janet L. Buist and her husband Elmer of Coopersville, MI; five grandchildren. Also surviving is his first wife, Anne Yausse Lundberg of Elizabeth City, NC. He was predeceased by one daughter, Karen Anne Lundberg.

A memorial service will be Saturday, May 29, 2004, at 11:00 AM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC, with Chaplain Derek Ross officiating, with Military Honors. James Lupton, Jr.

James Edward Lupton, Jr., 51 of 123 Macedonia Church Road, Poplar Branch, NC died Sunday, August 29, 2004, at Duke University Medical Center, Durham, NC. Mr. Lupton was the son of the late James Edward and Mildred Lewark Lupton and the husband of Cathy Simpson Lupton. He was employed with Narrows Island Club and attended the Poplar Branch Baptist Church.

Besides his wife, Mr. Lupton is survived by a daughter, Kelly Lupton of Virginia Beach, VA; and one sister, Opal Beasley of Collington, NC.

Graveside services will be conducted Thursday, September 2, 2004, at 2:00pm in Laurel Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Poplar Branch, NC by Rev. Bill Thorn. The family will receive friends and relatives at Twiford Funeral Home, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, Wednesday evening from 7:00 until 8:30pm and at other times at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Tommy Brown, 6114 Caratoke Highway, Grandy, NC. Leah Burger Lurz
Davis, WV native

Leah Cornelia Burger Lurz, age 81, of 901 Agawam Street, Elizabeth City, NC, died Tuesday, June 3, 2003, at the Albemarle Hospital. Mrs. Lurz, a native of Davis, WV, was the widow of Vincent DePaul Emmel and the daughter of the late Guy Edwin Burger, Sr., and Nina Mae Walizer Burger. She was a retired supervisor for City Corps and a member of Holy Family Catholic Church.

Mrs. Lurz is survived by two daughters, Sharon, and husband Donald Hunt and Nancy C., and husband Lee Sauer both of Elizabeth City, NC; one sister, Grace Elizabeth Matzen of Elizabeth City, NC, five brothers, Guy E. Burger, Jr., of Weirton, WV, William Burger of Chicago, IL, Clayton Burger, Robert Burger, and Kermit Burger, all of Baltimore, MD; and three grandchildren.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be Saturday, June 7, 2003 at 10:00 AM at Holy Family Catholic Church with the Rev. Jim Buchholz officiating. The family will receive friends at the residence. Eugene Lynch

Powells Point, NC - Eugene “Gene” William Lynch, age 72, of 118 South Spot Road, Powells Point, NC, died Sunday, September 26, 2004, at his residence. He was a native of Bronx, NY, and was the son of the late Edward Lynch and Mary Quinn Lynch.

Mr. Lynch had been a resident of the Powells Point community since 1994, and was a retired carpenter with the State of New York.

Survivors include his wife; Eileen Ann Farrell Lynch; three sons, Gene Lynch and his wife Wendi of Lake Carmel, NY, Edward Lynch and his wife Tensy of Croton on the Hudson, NY, James Lynch and his wife Lauren of Spring, TX.; and eight grandchildren.

He was predeceased by one sister, Winifred Lynch Moloney.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday September 29, 2004, at 1:30 P. M. at the Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, 301 West Kitty Hawk Road, Kitty Hawk, NC, 27949, with Deacon Don Wobser officiating.

A memorial service will be held in Carmel, NY. at a later date.

The family will join friends following the memorial service at the church.

Frank L. Langley

Frank L. Langley, age 86 of 1207 Peartree Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died Saturday, February 1, 2003, at the Albemarle Hospital. Mr. Langley, a native of Tyrrell County, was the husband of Onella Wilson Langley of the residence and the son of the late Frank Levi Langley, Sr., and Anna Liza Sawyer Langley. He was retired from Sanders Company, a Baptist, a US Army Veteran of WW II, and a member of the VFW.

Besides his wife he is survived by two daughters, Frances Langley and Kitty Barnes, and her husband Terry, all of Elizabeth City, NC; a son, Frank Gary Langley of Central, SC; a granddaughter, Jade Langley; and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside funeral service will be Tuesday, February 4, 2003, at 11:00 AM in Old Hollywood Cemetery with the Rev. F. Joe Griffith officiating. Full military honors will be presented by the William Clarence Jackson Post 6060. The family will receive friends Monday from 7:00 to 8:30 PM at the funeral home and at other times at the residence.

Judy Lepelletier

Harbinger, NC - Judy Rose Graham Lepelletier, 56, died at her residence on Tuesday, November 4, 2003. Mrs. Lepelletier was born in Oweto, NY and was a homemaker. She was the daughter of the late James Patrick and Verna Davis Graham and the widow of Glenn Eugene Lepelletier.

Mrs. Lepelletier is survived by three daughters; Marcey Cubler, Sandy Lepelletier of Harbinger and Shellie Kirkland of Long Island, NY; one son, Martin Kirkland of Ocean City, MD; one sister, Tonya Spikes of Sarasota, FL; three brothers, Harvey Graham of Mississippi, Ralph Graham of New York, Robert Graham of Florida and two grandchildren, Cassandra Bowman and Serena Stroud.

The family is planning a private memorial service.

James Ronnie Legg
Resident of Currituck, NC

James Ronnie Legg, age 56, of 1505 Tull’s Creek Road, Currituck, NC, died Thursday, March 4, 2004 at his residence. He was born in Newport News, VA, the son of the late Jessie Owen Legg and Florence Gilbert Legg, and the husband of Beverly Glass Legg of the residence. He was a self-employed plumber.

Besides his wife he is survived by a step-daughter, Sharon Blondheim and her husband Dave of South Mills, NC, and a sister, Judy Turvey of Hertford, NC; a niece Tammy Goines, a nephew Darrick Allen and wife Lisa; and a special friend Ed Turvey.

A memorial service will be at a later date. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC, is in charge of arrangements.

Pierre LeFevre

Col. Pierre L. LeFevre, Retired USMC

Chesapeake – Pierre Louis LeFevre, 69, died Saturday, May 22, 2004 at Chesapeake General Hospital after a long battle with COPD.

A native of Muskegon MI, Col. LeFevre started his Marine Corps career in 1953 when he enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserve. He graduated in May of 1957 from John Carroll University and earned his commission in June of 1957. He married icon Anne Kearns on April 23, 1960.

He proudly served his country for thirty-four years. In his career, Pierre served as the Detachment Commanding Officer aboard the USS Kearsarge in June of 1965. Promoted to Major, he was assigned to Co. A, Headquarters Battalion, MCS Command and Staff College. Later in his career, he served as C.O. of the Marine Barracks in Rota Spain and Operations Officer at Headquarters Marine Corps. He ended his career as the Deputy Chief of Staff- Command Inspector for MCDEC at Quantico, VA.

During his distinguished career, Colonel LeFevre served three tours in Vietnam, he participated in combat operations: Dubois Square, Hoan Dieu and Upshur Stream. His personal decorations include the Legion of Merit with Presidential Unit Citation and National Defense Service. After his retirement from the Marine Corps, Colonel LeFevre served as Dean of Men at Bishop Ireton High School in Arlington, VA. In December of 2000, Colonel LeFevre’s beloved wife, Anne, passed away due to cancer. In June of 2001, Colonel LeFevre accompanied his son David and daughter-in-law, Lisa, to Chesapeake, VA. In November of 2003, Pierre married icon an old family friend, Esther Ramsey.

Colonel LeFevre is survived by his wife Esther; three children, David, Mark and Nancy; ten grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He is predeceased by one grandchild, Rachel LeFevre.

A quote from Colonel LeFevre’s six-year-old grandson, Tyler LeFevre, best summarizes where his grandfather is, “Grandpa is guarding the gates of heaven.”

The family will receive friends at Twiford’s Colonial Chapel, Chesapeake on Thursday, May 27th at 6:00 p.m.. A prayer service will follow at 7:30 p.m.. The family will receive friends on June 3, from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Everly Funeral Home in Fairfax, VA. A Funeral Mass will be held on June 4 at 11:00 am at Our Lady of Good Counsel in Vienna, VA with burial following on July 12 at 10:45 am in Arlington National Cemetery.

Clara S. Leary

Clara Sears Leary, 86, of Shawboro, NC died Thursday evening, November 28, 2002, in the Winslow Memorial Home. She was born in Currituck County, NC to the late Robert Edward and Luna Alden Barnard Sears and was the widow of the late Christopher Columbus Leary, III. She was a member of the Providence Baptist Church.

Mrs. Leary is survivied by a daughter, Rosa “Stevie” Northwood of Elizabeth City; two sons, Christopher C. Leary IV of Shawboro and Wayne Sears Leary of Camden; a sister, Anne Sears Meads of Shawboro; a brother, Howard M. Sears of Chesapeake, Va. and a grandson, Mark H. Johnston of Nags Head.

The family will receive family and friends at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, Church St., Elizabeth City, Sunday, December 1, 2002, from 3:00 until 5:00pm. The family suggests in lieu of flowers memorial gifts be made to the Salvation Army, P. O. Box 1967, Elizabeth City, NC 27909. The body will be cremated and no services are planned at the present time.

Albert W. Leary

Albert Wayne Leary, age 66, of 110 South McMorrine Street, Elizabeth City, NC, died Wednesday, October 2, 2002 in Albemarle Hospital. He was a native of Camden County / Old Trap, NC; son of the late John Mitchell and Elsie Harrison Leary. He was a brick mason and was a Methodist.

Mr. Leary is survived by a daughter, Cynthia Leary Hampton and husband, Russ “Cricket”, of Coinjock, NC; a son, Kelly Wayne Leary of Camden, NC; a sister, Sylvia Crank of Elizabeth City, NC; and two grandchildren, Victoria and Isabella Hampton. He is predeceased by a sister, Angeleen Riggs Jones, and four brothers, Jack, Douglas, Arliss, and Phillip Leary.

A graveside service will be held Saturday, October 5, 2002, 2:00 PM at Wesley United Methodist Church Cemetery in Old Trap with the Rev. David Moehring officiating. The family will receive friends and relatives in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, NC on Friday evening from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM and at other times at the home of Cynthia and Cricket Hampton, 1171 Waterlily Road, Coinjock. . Memorial donations may be made to Elizabeth City Shrine Club, B.P.O.Elks # 856, or to the family.

Twiford’s Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
