H. David Leake

SOUTHERN SHORES, NC - HARRISON DAVID LEAKE, 74, of Southern Shores, NC died Friday, August 22, 2003 at his residence. Mr. Leake, born in Bristol, PA, was a 15 year resident of the Outer Banks. He previously lived in Manhasset and retired as a Teacher of Natural Sciences at the Manhasset Junior/Senior High School, where he taught for the last 25 years of his career. He was chairman of the first Education Committee at the Nags Head Nature Conservancy and served on the board of directors for 6 years. He worked as a volunteer for Pea Island Nature Preserve, served as President of Audobon, was a Federal bird-bander and was a frequent lecturer at local schools and the aquarium on the Outer Banks.

Throughout his life he touched the lives of many people with his numerous talents, humor and passion for life. He will be remembered as a dedicated husband, loving father and grandfather, a loyal and caring friend, a gifted and loved teacher, an enthusiastic and inspired naturalist, and an avid volunteer for his community.

Mr. Leake is survived by his wife, Irma Patterson Leake of the residence; three daughters, Deborah Ferst and husband, Edward of Guilford, CT, Cheri Pain and husband, Kevin of Nags Head, NC, and Mary Wright and husband, Jackson of Boulder, CO; five grandchildren, John and Katie Refano, Jillian Pain and Jenny and Savanna Wright.

A memorial service will be held at Duck United Methodist Church on Sunday, August 31, 2003 at 2:00 pm with Rev. David Clift officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts in memory of H. David Leake be made to Dare County EMS, Attn: Debbie Cowan, POB 1000, Manteo, NC 27954, or Alzheimers Disease Research, c/o Kathleen Honaker, Director of Development, 22512 Gateway Center Drive, Clarksburg, MD 20871.

Guy Lawrence

Grandy, NC - Guy Clifford Lawrence, age 77, of 151 Edgewater Drive, Grandy, NC, died Monday, June 21, 2004 in the Albemarle Hospital. He was a native of Galax, VA, and son of the late Sandy and Edna Lawrence. He was the husband of Dodie Harris Lawrence of the residence. Mr. Lawrence was a retired landscaper for Dixon and Van Landscaping Company in Norfolk, VA. He also served in the US Army during the Korean War. He was past president of Walnut Island Property Owners Association.

Besides his wife he is survived by one daughter, Pam Shumpert of Lexington, SC; two sons, Thomas Lawrence of Hebron, OH, and Bud Faulkner of Grandy, NC; six grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.

A memorial service, with Military Honors, will be Thursday, June 24, 2004 at 1:00 PM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC, with the Rev. Glenn McCraine officiating. The family will receive friends in the lobby of the funeral home immediately following the service. At other times the family will be at the residence, 151 Edgewater Drive, Grandy, NC. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 404 Jessup Street, Elizabeth City, NC 27909. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

David Lawrence

RALEIGH, NC - DAVID HOWE LAWRENCE, 84, died September 8, 2003 in Rex Hospital, Raleigh, NC. The son of Harry C. Lawrence and Helen Norbeck Lawrence, he was a longtime resident of the Outer Banks. An Engineer and surveyor, he was also engaged actively in real estate and construction, and was one of the original owners of Sea Scape Golf Course in Kitty Hawk. Following retirement, he worked with the Dare County Department of Parks and Recreation.

He attended public schools in Manteo and New Bern, NC. After two years at Belmont Abby College he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force for service during WWII, and following the war earned his engineering degrees from NC State College.

Mr. Lawrence is survived by two daughters, Barbara L. Wells of Oxford, MD and husband, Ken Wells; and Susan R. Lawrence of Chapel Hill; a step daughter, Julia M. Daniels of Chapel Hill; one sister, Joan “Joie” Bullock of Corapeake, and husband, Jeff Bullock, Sr.; his former wife, Martha Akin Lawrence of Chapel Hill; six grandchildren, four great grandchildren, and many loving nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews.

A graveside service will be conducted by Rev. Joseph Klaus at 11:00 am, on Saturday, September 13th in the Baum Cemetery, Elijah Baum Road, Kitty Hawk. Funeral arrangements are by Twiford Funeral Home, Manteo.

Charles Knoy

Moyock, NC - Charles Allen Knoy, “Chuck”, age 65, of the 100 block of Elizabeth Circle, Moyock, NC, beloved husband of Diane, devoted father of Kevin and Kelley, and grandfather of Diana and Rocco, passed away at home surrounded by his family after a courageous battle with cancer on April 14, 2004.

Born in Paris AR, Chuck spent most of his childhood in CA. He served in the United States Navy for 10 years and during the Vietnam Conflict. He was employed with the US Civil Service for 25 years. Chuck retired in 1997 from the Naval Air Warfare Center. He was the first American pilot to fly a Russian made wing and ground effect vehicle. Chuck was a Master Mason with Lynnhaven Lodge 220 A.F. & A.M. and a member of the Khedive Temple. He was dedicated to helping animals and is survived by two loving rescue dogs, Tippy and Baby, “Goober”.

He is survived by his wife, Diane Bergstrom Knoy of the residence; one daughter, Kelley Lynn Knoy Kasmark and her husband Thomas of Virginia Beach, VA; one son, Kevin Kurt Knoy and his wife Deena Ackley Knoy of North Ridgeville, OH; his mother, Syble Jones Knoy of Porterville, CA; two sisters, Betty Bartel-Brown and her husband George of San Jose, CA, and Charlene K. Mentzer and her husband Chuck of Visalia, CA; two grandchildren, Diane Marie Kazmark and Rocco John Kasmark.

It was Chuck’s wish to have a Celebration of Life at his home. It will be held on Sunday, April 18, 2004 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM. All family and friends are welcome to join the celebration. Frank Kohler

Frank Louis Kohler, Sr., age 61, of 13327 Brewster Road, Spring Hill, FL, died Saturday, January 24, 2004 in Albemarle Hospital. He was born in Camden, NJ, son of the late Frank Arthur and Rachel Belfiore Kohler and was the husband of Virginia Janice Andrews Kohler. He was a retired Master Chief for the U.S. Navy, where he served for 28 years, and was a veteran of the Viet Nam War, upon retiring from the Navy, he was the seafood manager of Kash ‘N Karry Grocery Store, in Spring Hill, FL for 14 years, and was a Catholic.

Besides his wife, Mr. Kohler is survived by a daughter, Kolleen Kohler Carroll and husband Paul Edward Carroll of Holiday, FL; two sons, Frank Louis Kohler, Jr. and fiancee Elizabeth Kaplan of Elizabeth City, NC and Kevin Michael Kohler and fiancee Heidi Murphy of Parrish, FL; and three grandchildren, Shannon Marie Carroll, Brittany Elizabeth Carroll, and Lauren Ashley Kohler.

Mr. Kohler is being sent to Spring Hill, FL, where a funeral service will be held at a later date.

Twiford Memorial Chapels, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC, is in charge of local arrangements.

James M. Kosanovich

NAGS HEAD, NC - JAMES MICHAEL KOSANOVICH, 61, of Nags Head, NC died Thursday, January 29, 2004 at his residence. Mr. Kosanovich was born in Pittsburgh, PA and was a retired City of Pittsburgh Police Officer with 28 years of service. He was an active in the Master Gardeners of Dare County.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Nancy Neiberg Kosanovich of the residence; sons, Brian James Kosanovich of CT, and Bradley David Kosanovich of CO. He was preceded in death by a son, Brett Michael Kosanovich.

Other survivors include a sister, Judith Naylor and husband, Edwin of Mt. Lebanon, PA; and nephews, Michael W. and Grant W. Naylor.

A memorial service will be held at St. Andrews by the Sea Episcopal Church on Wednesday, February 18, 2004 at 7:00 pm with the Rev. Charles E. B. Gill officiating.

Richard "Dick" Krueger

RICHARD HENRY ‘DICK’ KRUEGER, 87, of 103 Whitehall Road Camden NC died Sunday morning in the Albemarle Hospital. He was a native of Kenosha Wisconsin, son of the late Frank and Clara Gruling Krueger and the husband of Juanita “Boots” Copeland Krueger.

He left Kenosha Wisconsin in the early forties to join the US Air Force and was active in combat while stationed in England flying combat missions during World War II. While serving in the US Air Force he volunteered to be in the Berlin Airlift and received several commendations.

After his rewarding military career. He entered in the agriculture business in Belle Glade Fl and also founded Krueger Manufacturing, makers of Hurricane Shutters. In the late Fifties he sold those business and move to Elizabeth City, NC. He became a representative of Krueger Chevrolet and later, he was the founder of Carolina Marble Inc.

He was a member and past Commodore of the Palm Beach Yacht Club, Palm Beach, Fla., a former member of the Improved Order of Redman and a former member of the Elk’s Lodge. Mr. Krueger was an Episcopalian.

Besides his wife he is survived by two nieces Catherine K. Butterworth of Jupiter Fl., Carol K. Gore of Montgomery TX.; two nephews Richard A. Kruger of Rock Hill, SC and Roger A. Krueger of Elizabeth City, NC, .

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday July 6, 2004 at 1:00 PM at Twiford Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street Elizabeth City, NC with the Rev. James McGee officiating. The family will receive friends and relatives in the lobby of the funeral home immediately following the chapel service. In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made to the Pasquotank Arts Council or one’s favorite charity. Izetta Austin

Manteo, NC - Izetta Gray Austin, 58, died Friday, May 14, 2004 at the Outer Banks Hospital. Mrs. Austin was born in Buxton and was a homemaker. She was the daughter of the late Glenn Gray and Mrs. Mary Bell Clark of Manteo and was the wife of Melvin S. Austin, Jr.

Besides her husband, she is survived by three daughters, Mary Ellen Douan and husband, Henry of Manns Harbor, Jennifer Austin and Angela Austin both of Manteo; two sons, Melvin Gregory Austin and wife Vanessa of Buxton and Kyle Thomas Austin of Manteo; three sisters, Deborah Reynolds of Greenville, NC, Verna Clark of Manteo, Helen Johnson of Knightdale; two brothers, Glenn Gray of Manteo and James Clark of Kentucky; she was preceded in death by one daughter, Melva Lee Austin and one granddaughter, Victoria Lynn Jennette.

A Celebration of Life will held at Twiford’s Colony Chapel, Manteo, on Monday, May 17, 2004 at 11:00 AM with Rev. Roger Barnette officiating. Burial will take place in the Roanoke Island Memorial Gardens, Manteo. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday, May 16th from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Phyllis Kuhns

KILL DEVIL HILLS, NC - PHYLLIS ANN KUHNS, 63, of Kill Devil Hills, NC died Wednesday, May 12, 2004. Mrs. Kuhns, born in Cannonsbury, PA, was a retired Office Manager with an insurance company and a Baptist. She was a former resident of Canton Ohio and Salem, Ohio. She was the daughter of the late James F. and Rita Mauer Lindsay.

Mrs. Kuhns is survived by her husband, Kenneth Kuhns of the residence; three daughters, Maria Kennedy of Salem, OH, Meta Jo Kuhns and Kimberly Flannigan, both of Kill Devil Hills, NC; one son, Christopher Kuhns of Austin, TX; four grandchildren, B.J. Flannigan, Zack Kennedy, Lindsay Kennedy and Carson Curtis.

A graveside service will be held in the Roanoke Island Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Manteo, NC on Friday, May 14, 2004 at 4:00 pm. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, POB 1000, Dept. 300, Memphis, TN 38148-0552.

Maynard A. Abrams

KITTY HAWK, NC - MAYNARD ALLEN ABRAMS, 70, of Kitty Hawk, NC died Sunday, August 15, 2004 at the Outer Banks Hospital in Nags Head. Mr. Abrams, born in Macclesfield, NC, was retired from the U.S. Air Force as a Tech Sergeant with 20 years of service and was a Baptist. He worked for the FFA and, more recently, was a pilot examiner. Mr. Abrams was the son of the late William Richard and Alice Mae Wooten Abrams.

Mr. Abrams is survived by his wife, Evelyn Marsh Abrams of the residence; two sons, Lt.Com. Daniel A. Abrams and wife, Donna of Coronado, CA and William R. Abrams and wife, Denise, of Phoenix, AZ; and eight grandchildren.

A Memorial service will be held at the Otter’s Creek Primitive Baptist Church, Macclesfield, NC on Friday, August 20, 2004 at 1:00 pm, with Rev. Kenneth Windham officiating. The family will receive friends at Carlisle Funeral Home, 701 Hospital Drive, Tarboro, NC 27886, on Thursday evening from 7:00 to 8:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 930B Wellness Drive, Greenville, NC 27834.

Lucy Ballance

Hatteras, NC - Lucy C. Ballance, 81, died Wednesday, May 19, 2004 at Sentara Barco Nursing Home. Mrs. Ballance was born in Hatteras and was owner of the Ballance Oil Company. She was a member of the Hatteras United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women, Hatteras Island Chapter #303 Order of the Eastern Star. Mrs. Ballance was the daughter of the late Ivey Austin and the late Ida Peele Austin and was the widow of Wheeler Ballance.

She is survived by two sons, Bill Ballance of Hatteras and Tom Ballance of Jacksonville, FL; one brother, Clyde S. Austin of Ocracoke; five grandchildren, Todd Ballance and wife, Mary Ellon, Christinia Ballance, Felecia Berry, Laura Ballance and Billy Ballance;

Three great grandchildren, Wheeler D. Ballance, Jess Berry and Aiden Berry.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Hatteras United Methodist Church on Saturday, May 22, 2004 at 1:00 PM with Rev. Charles Moseley officiating. Burial will take place in the Ballance Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home of Todd and Mary Ellon Ballance on Friday from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM. Dewey Kukacka

Jarvisburg, NC - Dewey William Kukacka, III, age 41 of 149 Peach Tree Street Jarvisburg, NC, died Saturday August 7, 2004, from the result of injuries received in a tree cutting accident.

Mr. Kukacka was born September 9, 1962, and was a native of Amityville, Long Island, New York. He was employed with Outer Banks Chrysler, and was a certified Chrysler Master Technician, ASE certified. He was a member of the Poplar Branch Baptist Church and a Sunday school teacher. He was a veteran of the U. S. Navy.

Survivors include his wife; Andrea Chappell Kukacka, two daughters Rebecca Cathleen Kukacka and Emily Frances Kukacka both of the home. His parents Dewey William Kukacka, II and Delores Kathleen Merila Kukacka of Shelter Island, NY, his maternal grandmother Frances Guldbrandsen Merila of Shelter Island, NY and three sisters Julie K. Doherty of New Bern, NC, Theresa Kukacka of Greenport, NY and Merrideth K. Gonzales of Shelter Island, NY., and his father and mother-in-law Sam and Jeanette Goodwin Chappell of Jarvisburg, NC. He was preceded in death by one daughter Samantha Cathleen Kukacka.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday August 10, 2004, at 10:00 A. M. at the Poplar Branch Baptist Church 709 Poplar Branch Road, Grandy, NC., with Rev. Bill Thorn, Dennis Crehan and Rev. Bill Grimbol officiating. The family will receive friends following the memorial service in the church fellowship hall and other times at the home. The family suggests that memorial contributions be directed to; the Dewey William Kukacka, III childrens scholarship fund in C/O the East Carolina Bank #1 Juniper Trail, Kitty Hawk, NC 27949.

Louis Paul Kulinski

Louis Paul Kulinski, age 75, of 1013 Maple Street, Elizabeth City, NC, died Tuesday, September 23, 2003, at the Albemarle Hospital. Mr. Kulinski, a native of Savannah, GA, was the husband of Marie Stewart Kulinski of the residence and the son of the late Louis Kulinski and Louise DeGracia Kulinski. He was a member of Trinity Baptist Fellowship and was retired from the U. S. Marine Corps.

Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters; two sons; nine grand children; and twenty-one great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be Saturday, September 27, 2003, at 2:00 PM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. David Mansingh and the Rev. Bill Bailey officiating. Burial will follow in New Hollywood Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday from 7:00 to 8:30 PM at the funeral home and at other times at the residence. Memorial donations may be made to Trinity Baptist Fellowship Building Fund, PO Box 1373, Elizabeth City, NC 27909.

Bobbie Ann Kuuse
Homemaker

Bobbie Ann Hall Kuuse, age 59, of 117 Edgewater Drive, Grandy, NC, died Wednesday, December 24, 2003, at her residence. Mrs. Kuuse, a native of Norfolk, VA, was the wife of Donnie Gardner of the residence and the daughter of Myrtle May Harrison Hall of Grandy, NC, and the late William Winslow Hall. She was a homemaker and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Her family was the most important thing in her life.

Besides her husband and mother she is survived by two daughters, Sandra Saunders of Elizabeth City, NC and Christine Gafus of Grandy, NC; two sons, Bobby Kuuse, Jr., of Wilmington, NC, and James Michael Hare of Poplar Branch, NC; a sister, Joanne Heuneman of Grandy, NC, two brothers, Billy Hall of Virginia Beach, VA, and Sonny Hall of Gates, NC; eight grandchildren; one great grandchild; and the father of her children, Robert Kuuse, Sr., of Norfolk, VA. She was predeceased by a brother, Glenn Hall.

A funeral service will be conducted Saturday, December 27, 2003 at 1:00 P.M. in Twiford’s Northside Chapel, 1155 North Road Street, Elizabeth City, NC. Burial will follow in Laurel Memorial Gardens Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the residence of the daughter, Mr. & Mrs. Mark Gafus, 110 Woodhouse Drive, Grandy, NC.

Daniel Haze Kuykendall
Native of Morefield, W.VA

Daniel Haze Kuykendall, age 65, of 109 Elm Circle, Wedgewood Lakes, Moyock, NC, died at his residence on Saturday, January 11, 2003. He was born in Morefield, W.VA, son of the late Harry Ike and Pauline Cook Kuykendall, and was the widow of Betty Culpepper Kuykendall who predeceased him on January 8, 2001.

Mr. Kuykendall is survived by: one son, Daniel Ray Kuykendall of Moyock, NC; three sisters, Elizabeth Tilton, of SC, Betty Roseberry of MD, and Helen Mongold of WVA; three brothers Harry Jack Kuykendall of Morefield, WVA, Carl W. Kuykendall of Tyner, NC, and Billy J. Kuykendall of Chesapeake, VA.

A memorial service will be conducted on Wednesday, January 15, 2003, at 7:00 PM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel on Church Street, by the Rev. F. Joe Griffith. The family will receive friends in the lobby of the funeral home following the service.

Marjorie H. Ainsley

Marjorie Hufton Ainsley, age 80, of 1604 Edgewood Drive, Elizabeth City, NC, died Saturday, October 25, 2003, at Albemarle Hospital. Mrs. Ainsley, a native of Tyrrell County, was the widow of Ronald Ainsley and the daughter of the late James Andrew Hufton and Lona Morris Hufton. She was a retired meter reader for Elizabeth City, a member of Calvary Baptist Church, the VFW Women’s Auxiliary, and the Moose Lodge Women’s Auxiliary.

She is survived by a daughter, Teresa Morgan and husband Wayne of Elizabeth City, NC; two sons, Tommy Ranhorn and wife Rhonda of Camden, NC, and Wayne Trimmer and wife Sue of Elizabeth City, NC; two sisters, Zuma Atkinson of IL and Mary Elmer Hills of FL; one brother, Jimmy Hufton of Elizabeth City, NC; eight grand children; thirteen great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; and a special friend, Robert Russell. She was predeceased by a sister, Beulah Tillett and a brother, Morris Hufton.

Funeral services will be Monday, October 27, 2003, at 11:00 AM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC, with the Rev. Bill Thorn officiating. Burial will follow in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the residence of the daughter, Mr. & Mrs. Wayne Morgan, 500 Timothy Drive, Elizabeth City, NC.

Lawrence Carnway “LC” Rackley
Retired teacher

Lawrence Carnway “LC” Rackley, 70, of 1936 Nixonton Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died Wednesday night in the Albemarle Hospital. He was a native of Sanford, NC. He was a member of Sawyers Creek Baptist Church, Widows Son Masonic Lodge # 75 AF & AM, York Rite Masonic Bodies, Sudan Shriners, and served in the US Coast Guard. Mr. Rackley began his 30 year teaching career in Currituck County and later in Camden County where he touched and inspired many lives through the Industrial Arts program; and also was later employed with Rochelle Properties. He was son of the late Edward Carnway and Mrs. Sudie Hall Rackley.

Surviving are his daughter, Michelle Meads and husband, Mack Allen; a son, Michael Rackley, and wife, Donna; three grandchildren, Nicholas and Amy Rackley, and Daniel Meads, all of Elizabeth City, NC; a dear friend Melba Norrell; and the mother of their children, Betty Jean Rackley, both of Elizabeth City NC; two sisters, Juanita Dean of Sanford, NC, and Brenda Sexton of Wilkesville, OH; and one brother, Wayne Rackley of Statesville, NC and many special nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his step mother, Effie P. Rackley and a sister, Kathleen Jones.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday afternoon at 2:00 o’clock in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Jeff Russell. Burial will follow in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will be at the residence of his daughter and son in law, 543 Body Road, Elizabeth City, NC.

Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC, is in charge of arrangements.
