Eva Elizabeth Lane
2003 Graduate Currituck High School

Eva Elizabeth Lane, age 19, of 728 Northwest Backwoods Road, Moyock, NC, died Saturday, January 10, 2004, as the result of an automobile accident. She was born in Norfolk, Va., and was the daughter of Alvin Lee Lane, Sr., and Jenny Martin Lane of the residence. She was a 2003 graduate of Currituck County High School and a Baptist.

Besides her parents she is survived by a sister, Chrystal Lane Chatter, and husband Shawn, of Virginia Beach, VA; and two brothers, Justin Lane of the residence and Alvin Lee Lane, Jr., of Virginia Beach, VA.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, January 13, 2004, at 2:00 PM at Moyock Baptist Church with the Rev. Vic Ramsey officiating. Burial will follow in Moyock Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, Monday from 7:00 to 8:30 PM and at other times at the residence.

Nellie Lane

Elizabeth City - Nellie Maude Smith Lane, age 85, of 425 Elcinoca Drive, Elizabeth City, NC, died Sunday, July 27, 2003 at her residence. Born in Perquimans County, NC, she was the daughter of the late Joe Smith and the late Emma Umphlett Smith, and was the widow of Earl Clifton Lane. She was retired as a manager of the restaurant at People’s Drug Store, and a member of City Road United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Lane is survived by: two daughters, Earline L. Meads and husband Nicky of Elizabeth City, NC, and Linda L. Goldstein of Sarasota Florida; one brother Herbert Smith of Hopewell, VA; two grandchildren, Stephen E. Meads and wife Sharon, and Christy M. Graves and husband Jimmy; and one great grandchild Ryan M. Meads.

A funeral service will be conducted on Tuesday, July 29, 2003 at 11:00 AM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with Lee Fields officiating. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday evening, July 28, from 7:00 to 8:30 PM, and at other times at the residence.

Earl Clifton Lane
Retired Pasquotank Deputy Sheriff

Earl Clifton Lane, age 85, of 397 Hog Neck Road, Hertford, NC, died Tuesday, November 5, 2002, at his residence. Mr. Lane a native of Perquimans County, was the husband of Nellie Maude Smith Lane of Elizabeth City, NC, and the son of the late Joshua Lane and Sara Taylor Lane. He was a WW II Veteran of the US Navy. From 1940 to 1942 and from 1945 to 1961 he was a long distance truck driver. He was a Pasquotank County Deputy Sheriff from 1961 to 1982 and a security guard at S & R Supermarkets from 1982 to 1991. He was an honorary member of the Perquimans Ruritan Club, a member of the Perquimans Masonic Lodge # 106, the Scottish Rites Bodies, and attended Woodville Baptist Church.

Mr. Lane is survived by two daughters, Earline L. Meads and her husband, Nicky, of Elizabeth City, NC, and Linda L. Goldstein of Sarasota, FL; two grandchildren, Stephen E. Meads and his wife, Sharon, and Christy M. Graves and her husband Jimmy; and one great grandson, Ryan M. Meads. He was predeceased by a sister, Mary Hurdle, and two brothers, Willis Lane and Spurgeon Lane.

A funeral service will be Thursday, November 7, 2002 at 11:00 AM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with Masonic Rites and full Military Honors provided by the William Clarence Jackson Post # 6060. Burial will follow in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends immediately after the service in the funeral home lobby and at other times at the residence of the daughter, Mr. & Mrs. Nicky Meads, 481 Meadstown Road, Elizabeth City, NC. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, % Hazel Anderson, 106 South Ashe Street, Elizabeth City, NC 27909.

Carol D. Lamb

Carol Dempsey Lamb, age 70, of 859 Four Mile Desert Road, Hertford, NC, died Tuesday, November 26, 2002, at the Albemarle Hospital. Mr. Lamb, a native of Perquimans County, was the widower of Renia Meads Lamb and the son of the late Louis Dempsey Lamb and Mary Ellie Ferrell Lamb. He was the owner and operator of C. D. Lamb, Inc.

Mr. Lamb is survived by two daughters, Donna Stevenson, and her finance Neil Norman, and Glennett Spruill, and her husband Wesley, all of Hertford, NC; two brothers, Maxie Lamb, Sr., and James Lamb, both of Hertford, NC; two sisters, Hattie Harris and Florence Boone, both of Elizabeth City, NC; a half sister, Mildred Papouchous of Virginia Beach, VA; five grand children, Brad Stevenson and his wife Michelle, Kim Harris and her husband Buddy, Anne Cuthrell, Tyler Spruill, and Glenda Spruill; two great grand children, Ethan Stevenson and Haley Stevenson; his mother-in-law, Delia Meads of Elizabeth City, NC, and a son-in-law, Tommy Speight of Hertford, NC. He was predeceased by a daughter, Carolyn Lamb Speight.

Funeral services will be Friday, November 29, 2002, at 2:00 PM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. William Rembert and the Rev. Roland Cooper officiating. Burial will follow in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Stuart Meads officiating. The family will receive friends at the residence of the daughter, Mr. & Mrs. Wesley Spruill, 869 Four Mile Desert Road, Hertford, NC.

Wm W. “Bill” LaDow, Sr.
Lowell, MA native

Wm W. “Bill” LaDow, Sr., of 4943 Wrightsville Avenue, Wilmington, NC, died Monday, February 10, 2003, at Cape Fear Memorial Hospital. Mr. LaDow, a native of Lowell, MA, was the husband of Jean Stein LaDow of Elizabeth City, NC, and the son of the late Walter Charles LaDow and Cletis Bedwell LaDow. He served in the U. S. Air Force, was a retired manager at TCOM, and was a Methodist.

Besides his wife he is survived by a daughter, Cindy, and husband Tim, Williams of Elizabeth City, NC; a son, Bill, and wife Carolyn, LaDow of Camden, NC; one sister; one brother; and three grandchildren, Lisa Williams, Jade LaDow, and Mark LaDow.

A graveside funeral service will be Thursday, February 13, 2003 at 11:00 AM at Hilltop Cemetery with the Rev. F. Joe Griffith officiating. The family will receive friends at the family’s residence, 902 Cedar Street, Elizabeth City, NC.

Calvin Jordan

Powells Point, NC - Calvin Jordan, 78, died Wednesday, December 3, 2003 at the Outer Banks Hospital. Mr. Jordan was born in Seaboard, NC and was a production manager for Bendix Aviation Company in Teterboro, NJ for 28 years. He was a member of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church and The Knights of Columbus. Mr. Jordan was a veteran having served for 7 years in the U.S. Navy during W.W.II. He was the son of the late Henry Jordan and Sallie Ransom Jordan and was the husband of Wilhemenia Artis Jordan of the home.

Besides his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Jo Theresa Jenkins of Somerset, NJ; three sons, Charles Jordan of Silver Spring, MD, Keith Jordan of Kensington, MD and Brian Jordan of Brookeville, MD; two sisters, Dorothy Jordan of Seaboard, NC and Bernice Emanuel of Silver Spring, MD; one brother, Carl Jordan of Marietta, GA and six grandchildren.

A Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, December 9, 2003 at 10:00 AM at the Holy Redeemer Catholic Church with Father Bill Stickle officiating. A visitation will be held on Monday, December 8, 2003 from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Twiford’s Colony Chapel, Manteo. The family will also receive friends following the service on Tuesday at the residence.

Lester Johns

MANTEO, NC - LESTER ARTHUR JOHNS, JR, 44, of Manteo, died Monday, August 4, 2003, in his residence. Mr. Johns was born in Harrisburg, Pa and was employed as a painter with Ron and Phil’s Body Shop. Mr. John’s was a former member of the Pennsylvania National Guard as an E-5.

He was the son of the late Lester Arthur and Doris S. Troutman Johns.

Surviving are his daughter; Brittany Grace Johns of Manteo and his sister; Diana Johns of Port Orange, Fla.

A celebration of life will be held Sunday, August 10, 2003, at 3:00 p.m. in Twiford’s Colony Chapel by the Rev. Ron Denham with burial in Roanoke Island Memorial Gardens. Friends may join the family at Twifords Funeral Home, Saturday, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Twiford’s Colony Chapel is assisting the John’s family with arrangements.

David Ballance

OCRACOKE, NC - DAVID ALLAN BALLANCE, 53, of Ocracoke, NC, died Thursday, November 13, 2003, in a Portsmouth, Va. hospital. Mr. Ballance, born in Portsmouth, Va., was a commercial fisherman. He was a former high school math teacher for 7 years before returning home to be in the outdoors and fish with his family. Mr. Ballance was a member of the Ocracoke United Methodist Church and served on the Ocracoke Clinic Board for several years. He loved duck hunting, gardening, especially his rose bushes, and enjoyed designing and building his own wood projects.

Mr. Ballance was the son of Elisha Everett Ballance of Ocracoke and the late Mildred Amber Hardison Ballance.

He is survived by his wife, Sharon Hutcherson Ballance of the residence; a sister, Sylvia “Lynette” Waller; two brothers, Reginald Gray Ballance and Eugene Spencer Ballance, all of Ocracoke, NC.

A Celebration of Mr. Ballance’s life will be held at the Ocracoke United Methodist Church on Monday, November 17, 2003 at 11:00 am with Rev. John White officiating. Burial will follow in the Ballance Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church on Sunday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 pm and at other times at the home of Elisha and Reggie Ballance. Friends may also join the family following the funeral service on Monday in the church recreation hall. Memorial donations in memory of David may be made to the Myeloma Institute, UAMS, 4301 W. MARY ELIZABETH IVEY JOHNSON
Perquimans County native

Mary Elizabeth Ivey Johnson, 77, of 19 Beth Drive, Moorestown, NJ died Friday, December 20, 2002, at her residence. She was born in Perquimans County, NC to the late Redden and Ruth Layden Ivey and was the widow of the late Marius Johnson. Mrs. Johnson was a retired salesperson for Pomeroys.

She is survived by three daughters, Jennifer Besnoff of Moorestown, NJ, Barbara Grabert of Narlton, NJ and Claudia Kutch of Mt. Holley, NJ; seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted Monday morning, December 23, 2002, at 11:00am in the Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, NC by Rev. F. Joe Griffith. Burial will be in the New Hollywood Cemetery. The family will greet friends and relatives in the lobby of the funeral home immediately following the chapel service. Twiford’s Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Sabrina Johnson

Moyock, NC - Sabrina Breeze Michelle Johnson, age 16, of 114 Beech Circle, Moyock, NC, died January 1, 2003. She was born in Pasquotank County, NC, the daughter of Tony Dean Johnson of Hampton, VA, and Nila Curry Johnson of the residence. She was a sophomore at Currituck County High School, a member of Future Farmers of America, and Mount Zion United Methodist Church.

Besides her father and mother, she is survived by one brother, Bryan Johnson of the residence, and a half brother, James Harden, III of Elizabeth City, NC.

Funeral services will be Sunday, January 5, 2003, at 3:00 PM in Mount Zion United Methodist Church with the Rev. Glenn McCraine officiating. Burial will follow in Laurel Memorial Gardens Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday afternoon from 3:00 till 5:00 PM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, and at the residence at other times. Marjorie Gayle Johnson

Barco, NC - Marjorie Ruth Gayle Johnson, age 72, formerly of Powells Point, NC, died Tuesday, June 10, 2003 at Albemarle Hospital. She was born in Fulton County, GA; daughter of the late Charles C. and Marjorie Blakeslee Gayle and was the wife of Floyd J. Johnson of Barco, NC. She was a member of Powells Point Baptist Church.

Besides her husband, she is survived by special friends, Robert and Becky Baggett and their children, Elizabeth and Bobby Baggett.

A funeral service will be conducted on Saturday, June 14, 2003 at 1:00 PM at Powells Point Baptist Church, with the Rev. Eugene McLawhorn officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

WILLIAM DWIGHT JOHNSON
Native of Harnett County, NC

William Dwight Johnson, 90, of 7875 Caratoke Highway, Powells Point, NC died Friday, June 20, 2003, in the Britthaven Nursing Home, Nags Head, NC. Mr. Johnson was born in Harnett County, NC to the late Junius and Ada Pollard Johnson and was the widower of the late Della Kathryn Rhodes Johnson. He was a retired production manager for the Kelford Coca Cola Bottling Company and a member of the Powells Point Baptist Church.

He is survived by one daughter, Sylvia Sparks and husband, Jim, of Powells Point, NC, three grandsons, Jim Sparks and wife, Gincie, of Greensboro, NC, Brad Sparks and Daniel Sparks both of Powells Point, NC and a great granddaughter, Parker Sparks of Greensboro, NC.

A graveside service will be conducted Monday, June 23, 2003, at 3:00pm in the Powells Point Baptist Church Cemetery by Rev. Herbert Hemingway. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Dr. W. T. Griggs Elementary School Library, Poplar Branch, NC. The family will be at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Sparks, Powells Point, NC. Twiford’s Funeral Home, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, NC is in charge of funeral arrangements.

Ralph Johnson

WANCHESE, NC - RALPH WAYNE ‘SNOOKIE’ JOHNSON, 58, of Wanchese, NC died Sunday, October 5, 2003 at the Outer Banks Hospital. Mr. Johnson, born in Norfolk, VA, was a commercial fisherman, was in the Merchant Marines and was affiliated with Wanchese Assembly of God. He was the son of the late Ralph Ernest ‘Swede’ Johnson and Gloria Daniels Johnson of Wanchese. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Tana Johnson.

Besides his mother, Mr. Johnson is survived by a daughter, Anna Johnson Outenreath of Henderson, TX; a son, Ernest Lee Johnson of Wanchese, NC; a sister, Tana Johnson Jessen of Castro Valley, CA; a brother, Dean Johnson of Wanchese, NC; one grandchild, Mariah Outenreath; nieces and nephews, Erica Ruff, Gerri Jessen, Kelly Gaskill, Bill Johnson and Charlotte Johnson.

Funeral services will be held at Wanchese Assembly of God on Wednesday, October 8, 2003 at 2:00 pm with Dr. David Dalton and Rev. Charles Daniels officiating. Burial will be in the Tillett Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Twiford’s Funeral Home on Tuesday evening from 7:00 to 9:00 pm.

Helen Manning Johnson
Native of Martin County, NC

Helen Manning Johnson, age 97, of 1700 West Ehringhaus Street, Elizabeth City, NC, died Saturday, December 6, 2003 at Winslow Memorial Nursing Home. She was born in Martin County, NC, daughter of the late Frank Winston and Lula Capps Johnson and was the widow of George Herman Manning. She was a retired nurses aid for Albemarle Hospital and Winslow Memorial Nursing Home and was a member of The Seventh Day Adventist Church.

Mrs. Johnson is survived by a daughter, Lois Hines and husband Charles of Elizabeth City, NC; two sons, George H. Manning, Jr. of Tarboro, NC, and Carl Wayne Manning and wife Nancy of Tarboro, NC; a sister, Louise Dunn of Ocean View, VA; a brother, Lance Johnson of Oak City, NC; seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Jean M. Glassie and a brother, Henry Johnson.

A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, December 10, 2003 at 2:00 PM in Oak City Cemetery, in Oak City, NC, with Pastor Claude Steen officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday evening from 7:00 until 8:30 and at other times at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hines, 903 Parsonage Street Ext. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC, is in charge of funeral arrangements.

Douglas Johnson

Norfolk, VA - Douglas Eugene “Gene” Johnson, age 59, a former resident of Norfolk, VA, died Friday, April 16, 2004 in the Albemarle Hospital in Elizabeth City, NC. He was a native of Logan, WV, and was the son of the late Kelly Johnson and Leona Paynter Johnson. He was a retired carpenter.

Survivors include his wife; Phylis Gatewood Johnson of Carrollton, Va., one daughter Jennifer Gatewood of Norfolk, VA; four sons Kelly Johnson and Brandon Gatewood both of Hertford, NC, Darrell Johnson of Virginia Beach, VA, Dwayne Sullivan of South Mills, NC. two sisters Emily J. King of Hertford, NC and Shirley J. Waddell of Chesapeake, Va., three brothers James Johnson of Charlottesville, Va., Roy M. Johnson of Virginia Beach, Va., and Robert Lee “Bobby” Johnson of Hertford, NC, and thirteen grandchildren.

A committal services will be held at a later date by his family.

Tony Dean Johnson
Native of Norfolk, VA

Tony Dean Johnson, age 45, of 100 Emancipation Drive, Hampton, VA, died Tuesday, October 5, 2004, at the Hampton Veteran’s Hospital. Mr. Johnson, a native of Norfolk, VA, was the son of the late Thomas Demar Johnson and Vivian Scott Johnson. He was a carpenter, a US Army Veteran, a member of the Paralyzed Veteran’s of American, the 2002 Winter Speical Olympics, and a Baptist.

Mr. Johnson is survived by a son, Bryan Johnson, of USS Ponce (LPD-15), a sister, Dawn Johnson of South Mills, NC, two brothers, Ted Johnson of Buffalo, NY, and Kenny Johnson of Elizabeth City, NC, and the mother of his children, Nila Curry Johnson of Moyock, NC. He was predeceased by a daughter, Sabrina Michelle Johnson.

A memorial service will be Sunday, October 10, 2004, at 3:00 PM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC with the Rev. Glenn McCrainne officiating. The family will receive friends at the residence of Nila Johnson, 130 Tuggle Road, Moyock, NC, from 3:00 to 8:00 PM Saturday, October 9. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrange- ments.

Iva Evans Hampton Johnston

Iva Evans Hampton Johnston, 92, of 4285 Caratoke Highway, Coinjock, NC died Thursday, January 2, 2003, in the Sentara Barco Nursing Home. She was born in Grandy, NC to the late Jesse and Sirley Woodhouse Evans and was the widow of D. Lindsey Hampton and Otis Johnston. Mrs. Johnston was a retired postmaster, a member of the Coinjock Baptist Church and member of the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter, #218.

She is survived by a daughter, Cherrill Ann Hampton Robertson and husband Thomas Louis Robertson, of Lawrenceville, VA; a son, Newton N. Hampton and wife, Sue B., of Coinjock; a sister, Esther Evans Walker of Maple, NC; five grandchildren, Susan R. Quick, Robert H. Robertson, Frances E. Hampton, Lisa C. Hampton and David L. Hampton; two great grandchildren, Michael Quick and Sydney Robertson.

Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, January 5, 2003, at 3:00pm in the Coinjock Baptist Church by Rev. Charles H. Wellons. Burial will be in the Hampton Family Cemetery in Coinjock. The family will receive friends and relatives in the Church Social Hall immediately following the service and at other times at her residence. The family suggests that memorial gifts be the made to Coinjock Baptist Church, 193 Worth Guard Road, Coinjock, NC 27923 or to ones favorite charity. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, Church ST., is in charge of arrangements.

Gracie White Cartwright

Mrs. Gracie White Cartwright, age 91, of 101 Quaker Drive, Elizabeth City, NC died Wednesday, December 25, 2002, at Albemarle Hospital. Mrs. Cartwright was born in Pasquotank County, the daughter of the late Mod and Sallie Morris White and the widow of Gaston Cartwright. She was a member of Newbegun United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Cartwright is survived by one son, Charles Cartwright, and was predeceased by two sons, Aubrey and Gaston J. Cartwright.

Funeral services will be conducted Friday, December 27, 2002 at 4:00 pm in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel. Burial will be in West Lawn Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the lobby of the funeral home.
